Rate this book

Stop marketing. Start UnMarketing. No one likes cold calls at dinnertime, junk mail overflowing your mailbox, and advertisements that interrupt your favorite shows. If this is "marketing," then the world would probably prefer whatever is the opposite of that.

If you're ready to stop marketing and start engaging, then welcome to UnMarketing. The landscape of business-customer relationships is changing, and UnMarketing gives you innovative ways out of the old "Push and Pray" rut. Instead, draw the right customers to you through listening and engagement, enabling you to build trust and position yourself as their logical choice when they need you.

Stratton does have a remarkable perspective on marketing, but the book becomes spoiled by his ego. The little asides and footnotes initially start off fun, and then become increasingly irritating.

I genuinely enjoyed this book, which is pretty amazing given that I'm not in the marketing field, just interning in a communications position. Reading this book is what I imagine it would be like to read Jerry McGuire's "mission statement" (*cough, cough* memo). I'm not a salesperson and I don't intend to join the retail field, but it was so nice to read what we are all thinking but none of us say it. I felt a genuine connection to the authors, and they clearly care a lot about good relationships. Not that I've ever really lost faith in humanity, but it's the kind of book that would make you think: faith in humanity restored!

FOKUS KE AUDIENS, ITU KUNCINYA

Akhirnya saya selesai membaca buku ketiga dari penulis ini. Seperti biasa, bukunya bikin saya makin paham apa sih yang dicari audiens dari beragam bisnis?

Inti utamanya sih jangan egois.

Status sebagai IRT nggak perlu disembunyikan, tapi brandingnya jangan sampai salah dengan menyebutkan 'Mom with 4 kids to build a business' kalau target kliennya untuk umum.

Choose our persona wisely.

Read this in 2024, and although the revised edition is from 2017, this being from seven years ago makes the information incredibly dated. (There's a Twitter obsession, and Twitter is no longer Twitter.) That said, there are some helpful thoughts in this book, and it's a very easy quick read (as long as you don't get bored to death). It wasn't a complete bust, but I'm not sure I would recommend it to anyone unless they are starting from zero in modern marketing.

Also, the writing is filled with toxic positivity, and a weird ego that is trying to be funny, but failing. Lot of eye rolls while reading this.

Giving two stars though because marketing in the age of social media is very hard to keep up with, and once a book is published, it's going to be out of date. I found a few chapters helpful and evergreen, and the general message is a good one.

I knew a lot of this but the style was really engaging and I did end up with a bunch of notes and some food for thought. (One being that I really don't want to use SM for my marketing - let me work off of a website/newsletter model to start.) While twitter is no longer the great thing it was when this book was written (seriously, the advice to ignore the trolls works great when you're a white male, not so much for anyone else where being ignored often leads to escalation), creator monetization is now a thing, trade shows have now gone virtual, and of course there's nothing about the newest kid on the block TikTok, there's still a lot of value to be had

Bought on a whim while passing through Chicago Midway. Glad I did. Reading this book was more like a conversation with the authors - quite refreshing in the world of business books. If you’re looking for practical, actionable suggestions regarding digital marketing, Unmarketing is full of them. Great for the folks who are just learning and also a good refresher for those who’ve been in it for a while.

This book was a simply honest book on marketing, and how the principles of building relationships still hold true no matter how fast technology changes. I think my big takeaway was setting up a funnel that leads potential leads to whatever action you have defined.

Some interesting ideas but haphazardly put together

I really liked some of the ideas in the early chapters but then the book jumps from the characteristics of the current marketing world right into specific tactics.

this book will make you smile, snort, and LoL while making you rethink your approach to marketing. And be sure to read the footnotes! I know most don't bother, but they have a personality all their own.

Read this also for class but it was pretty good and although it was a bit outdated a lot of it held up pretty nicely, and the authors made an effort to be funny (which the humor may have also been outdated but was still nice they tried).

I thought this book had some sound actionable advice. Some of it is a bit dated, but the theories behind those outdated ideas are still relevant (i.e. Twitter now X).

Good intro in to community building principles and concepts related to evangelism

Very quick and easy read with actionable suggestions related to modern networking and relationship or community building. Wolf have liked some bullet lists here and there to highlight this actions but otherwise a helpful book.
