This was a very frustrating book, though that could have been reasonably expected, not only because it centers the voices of men but because of its age. Lots of the language sounds outdated, though I am afraid the viewpoints expressed have not progressed nearly as much as one would hope.

Interesting things:

~Lots of blaming feminism and feminists. Even the subject most sympathetic to feminism referred to it as "the women's movement", which seemed to indicate its dirty word status.

~How much the significant others of rape victims made it about their sense of violation and their loss. Not surprising, but still irritating. You wouldn't even call it narcissism, because they are not exceptional in that way, but it's frustrating.

~How common it is for men to see everything women do as being for and about men. The clothes make the rape her fault, because she is doing it to exert power over men, but why can't she just like the outfit? Or be trying to avoid the worse treatment that you get for not being attractive enough.

You would think that having the interviewees limited to those willing to talk would skew it more, but it feels like the recruiting process was pretty effective at getting a good sample. That most of the interviewees feel very secure in their beliefs probably helps.

Most had their names changed, but the two psychoanalysts who didn't should have. Maybe it's better to know that their work can be safely discounted.

The style of writing could have improved considerably, but overall the perspective offered was an intriguing, if at times disgusting or horrifying, change.

Good theoretical book about attitudes toward rape and how those attitudes impact women's lives.
