If you are a film script writer or film director planning to make a thriller movie or a novelist planning to write a psychological thriller, I request you to proceed only after reading this book and giving necessary credits and acknowledgments to Dr. B. Umadathan.The knowledge from this book is the sine qua non you need to create an engrossing thriller. Almost everyone in Kerala and many outside Kerala (after the recent publishing of the English translation, Dead Men Tell Tales: The Memoir of a Police Surgeon ) who loves thrillers have already read this book. If you are planning to put a half-cooked creation in front of them in disguise as a thriller without properly researching this book, I guarantee you that your creation will be ripped apart and decimated to the core by the movie and book lovers.

Don't be mistaken that this book is a thriller from the above paragraph. This book is not a thriller, but it describes all the minute details and Scientific data behind solving criminal cases, which you can read like a thriller due to the writer's extraordinary knowledge and amazing writing skills. It will be challenging to read in some places, though, where you will be astonished to see the cruelty of some criminals. The author had taken special care not to explicitly recreate those scenes to avoid trauma to the readers.

He made sure to write all the crimes in such a manner that it would never be an inspiration for the criminals to commit a similar crime. He is instead preparing us to face those criminals if they try to attack us. I believe that is what differentiates a good author from a great author, and Dr. B. Umadathan undeniably did an astounding job here by inspiring the right people in the right way.

Dr. B. Umadathan was one of the most famous Forensic Surgeons from Kerala. He did his MBBS and MD from Trivandrum Medical College. I have seen and read some books by Forensic Surgeons who have a remarkable ability to teach Forensic Medicine. Dr. B. Umadathan is incontrovertibly one of the best among them. What sets him apart is his ability to explain complex Medical details (that even MD students (Residents) or Fellows will find challenging to comprehend) in a simple enthralling manner palatable to even the layman.

This book is thoroughly examining all the complicated cases that Kerala witnessed. He easily cracked most of those sensational and perplexing cases by introducing newer techniques and methods, which helped the Kerala Police a lot in solving them.

If you are someone who loves to read a thriller, this book will captivate you more than any other thriller you have read. If you are a Medical student who wants to study Forensic Medicine, it will make your journey through Forensic Medicine an easy and delightful one.

good if you like true crime but told from an old uncle's perspective - like they're all very lucid and sharp but there's way too much time spent in diplomacy and saying 'i worked with this person, he is very smart and is now xyz in the force and is a close friend of mine'. Having looked that over, I still liked the procedures and the things explained though. I've been watching a lot of Criminal Minds and have always been a big fan of Bones, so this played into that love of mine.

Dead Men Tell Tales is an interesting memoir with plenty of anecdotes, inside view of Indian forensic investigations written like short murder mysteries. Science behind the investigation described in very simple language. This is not a book to know facts but to understand how the mind of a forensic expert works. He also talks about mental health and how it not just affects the individual and his family but also the society at large. I liked how the author explains his field in layman language. An anatomy will definitely help to get a result on this question. Today, Forensic medicine plays a vital role in police investigations. He also explained some scientific terms about the ways people die which was so interesting to know. It gives brief idea about forensic sciences as well as how it helps police investigations. One time read book.

Can't belive this is non-fiction.

Gripping from the first murder, the book is a revelation on the art of postmortem and "elementary science". A bit grim, since it involves hundreds of murders, this is a wonderful read nevertheless.
A few famous murder mysteries from Kerala are taken as case studies - stressing on how important a police surgeon and his methods are to unravel hidden truths.

If details are noticed on dead bodies, you can differentiate murder from suicide:
1. Whether a person was pushed, or jumped from a height.
2. Drowned after dying, or died drowning.
3. Strangled pre muder or post murder.
4. In case of bullet wound, studying the marks around it can determine the distance, casing, direction of shooting.
5. Usage of photographic imposition to identify disintegrated dead bodies.

It can be read as scientific short stories, or as thriller tales. And its a memoir :)

One Indian show that bonded 90’s and the early 00’s kids was CID. Almost everyone at some point in their lives were hooked to it.

Especially the part where Dr Solankhe would give a major breakthrough in the case with his forensic intelligence. His role was so fascinating that when almost 15 years later I got a chance to read memoir of a real Dr Solankhe- Dr B Umadathan- I grabbed it with both hands.

Dr Umadathan was a forensic surgeon who held various roles of high regards’ in Kerala. His memoir is translated from Malayalam and the job is done well because it impacts you as it should.

I particularly liked how the author explains his field in layman language. He also talks about mental health and how it not just affects the individual and his family but also the society at large.

If you are a visual reader like me then be prepared to weave a world which is as surreal as it is chilling. I had goosebumps every time it hit me that the book is not fiction.

Of course there are a certain things that could have been avoided, like the self-boasting tone, putting the central government down in order to put the Kerala Government on the pedestal (which can be fine if you prefer political bias in a book) and also the last chapter was largely unnecessary.

However, having said that I still think it’s a good read and I would recommend it to anyone who loves the field but my advice would be to brace yourself for impact.

This book kept popping up on so many Instagram pages I follow that I had to check out what it was about. I discovered that the book was the memoir (sort of) of a forensic surgeon from Kerala. Given that it was one of my favourite genres, forensic crime, and was based in Kerala, with which I share a kind of umbilical connection, I pre-ordered the book, something I rarely do.

What I liked:
I really liked the cover of the book, which I think is quite smart and well designed by Gavin Morris.

I haven’t read much crime fiction based in India so it was interesting to read about crime in India, especially local hacks used by criminals, such as using ‘patuvalli’ to replicate bruise marks on the skin (p.54). I also really appreciated legal and procedural information like the bit about the law in India regarding exhumation (p.43). Some of the forensic methods outlined were also interesting.

This was also a practical illustration in the meaning of representation. To see my surname and similar ones, to see the names of places I have heard my parents discuss, even if in a discussion of crime and criminals, was nice.

This is not a linear memoir so it has a flavour of a cherished elder narrating ‘I remember that time…’ kind of stories. This feeling, I felt, was particularly reinforced by the little asides in the narrative that told us where Dr Umadathan’s colleagues were now.

What I disliked:
I was disappointed by the translation, which was almost literal in places and made for awkward phrasing in English. And it started really early on in the book: ‘As Dr Thangavelu waved the green flag for my desire to teach, my father had to agree.’ I could almost hear the Malayalam ‘pacha kodi’ in my head, which is not a bad thing, but imagine a non-Malayali or an English speaker coming to this. I think a translation should render the English version more natural. ‘Dr Thangavelu signalled his support for my desire to teach. Father had no choice but to agree.’ Or something to that effect.

I think a fluid translation can only draw in more readers. To this day, my favourite Indian translation is probably Cobalt Blue by Sachin Kundalkar, translated by Jerry Pinto. One is left in no doubt that the setting is Pune of a certain period, that the family is a typical Maharashtrian one, but the ambience and the dialogue is rendered in a beautiful English that merits re-reads. I did not find that here. And I do not know if the translation affected the tone, but on the whole, given the subject matter, I found this a dry work, even soporific at times, only occasionally alleviated by the strange particulars of a case that drew one in.

As a copy editor, another thing I was deeply, deeply disappointed by was the editing on this. So many typos, so many grammar mistakes: ‘When I become principal, I was able to provide’ (p.42). These are little things that now show up in MS Word as grammar errors. That these were not corrected is so sad. And then things like ‘I think they trusted my findings because not once during their agitations they accused me of any malpractice’ (p.20) which would have been so much better as ‘I think they trusted my findings because not once during their agitations did they accuse me of any malpractice.’

Overall, I had many expectations of this book but it didn’t quite deliver. It is quite obvious, though, that Dr Umadathan was a skilled forensic surgeon who took a real interest in his work and thought not in a vacuum, but with social and cultural context (although I might not always agree with his views).

This audiobook took me back to my forensic class days..
described in painstaking detail, this book covers not only cases but the technical and theory aspects of the subject, so that for the reader, it doesn’t seem totally Greek and Latin.
The book is a collection of case diaries, that the author came across during different times in his career, and I felt a chill run down my spine each time the realisation hit me that the book isnt fiction.
He also gave due importance to the mental health conditions that lead to suicide or suicidal tendencies and certainly did not belittle the conditions or brush them aside.
He gave an overview on the same, in whatever capacity he could, so tht the relevance of the issue was stressed upon.
I wasnt a fan of the last chapter which was more or less one where he wrote about how his “alleged” involvement in two media sensationalised cases were not true, and was less of a recollection and more of an assertion of fact.

ತೀರಾನ್ ಅಧಿಕಾರಂ ಒಣ್ರು ಅಂತ ನಮ್ಮ ವಲಿಮೈ ಖ್ಯಾತಿಯ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕ ಎಚ್ ವಿನೋತ್ ಮಾಡಿದ ಸಿನಿಮಾ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪರಾಧ ನಡೆಸಲು ಬಳಸಿದ ಚೂರಿಯ ಹಿಡಿಯುವ ವಿಧಾನ ಹೀಗಲ್ಲ ಹಾಗೆ ಅಂತ ಇತ್ತು. ಇಷ್ಟು ದಿನ ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ಪಿಚ್ಚರ್ ,ಸೀರಿಯಲ್‌ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬುದ್ವಂತ ಹೀರೋ/ ಹೀರೋಯಿನ್ ಗ್ಲೌಸ್ ಹಾಕ್ಕೊಂಡು ಬೆರಳಗುರುತು ಅಳಿಸದ ಹಾಗೆ ಎತ್ಕೊಂಡು ಮಂಗ ಮಾಡ್ತಿದ್ರಾ ಅಂತ‌ ಅನಿಸಿತ್ತು.

ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಅಂತಹ ಹಲವಾರು ನೈಜ ಘಟನೆಗಳ,ತನಿಖೆಗಳ ಆಧರಿಸಿದ್ದು. ಕೇರಳದ ಹಲವಾರು ಅಪರಾಧ ಪ್ರಕರಣಗಳ ಫೊರೆನ್ಸಿಕ್ ತಜ್ಞರ ಶ್ರಮದಿಂದ ಗುರುತು ಪತ್ತೆ, ಹಲ್ಲೆಯ ವಿವರ , ಹಳೆಯ ಮಿಸ್ಸಿಂಗ್ ಕೇಸು ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ನಡೆಸಿದ ವಿವರಗಳಿವೆ.

ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕೇಸುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪರಾಧಿ, ವಿಕ್ಟಿಮ್ ಇಬ್ರಿಗೂ ಅನೈತಿಕ ಸಂಬಂಧ, ಮದ್ಯಪಾನ ಚಟ ಇದ್ದದ್ದು ಸೋಜಿಗವಾಗಿ ಕಂಡಿತು.

ನಮ್ಮ ಯುವ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರಿಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಕತೆಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲಿವೆ.
ನಮಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲದ ಹಲವಾರು ವಿಷಯಗಳೂ...

For someone who has worked at one or the other stage of investigation into some of the most well-known criminal cases in Kerala, forensic surgeon B.Umadathan has a wealth of experience to share. This book is a collection of some of the stand-out, tough nut cases which he has dealt with during his career. He lays out both the technical details of how the forensic surgeon arrives at specific conclusions (all in lay person's terms), while also bringing in the human story behind some of these tragic, horrific incidents.

From ripper Chacko to Sukumara Kurup, some of the most infamous criminals from Kerala, figures in the book. Not to forget the many smaller, lesser-discussed cases, but no less intriguing. He does not spend much time on each story, choosing to deliver the punch in a short, clinical manner. The only unwelcome digressions are the short personal histories that accompany the mention of any officer's name. The writing/translation is average, but the stories more than make up for that.

Scriptwriters and filmmakers looking for ideas to work on can perhaps have a look at this book. I could see so many films in these pages, although much of it would be of the dark kind.

The book is about the intriguing experiences of a senior forensic expert, who has been pivotal in solving several tough murders and suicides of the last decades. I loved the book for its insights about crime solving. But the writing is clearly lacking in providing an awe that any reader expects from such a book. In west, professional help is normally used while writing autobiographical works, so that the limitations of the author as a writer can be overcome to some extent. I seriously feel that in Malayalam book industry too it should be introduced.

When I used to read Perry Mason mysteries, I remember I used to read the preface without fail. In most books, the author acknowledges and dedicates to a real life forensic expert, medical examiner, cop or prosecutor with a small write up of their contribution. I was fascinated by these people who were working on logic and science alone to reconstruct what happened.

This book by B.Umadathan of the medico legal case files in Kerala was a true joy since I wasn't aware of the practice's maturity in our country. Illustrated with many cases and the role played by the forensic team the book was more of a how we found out. Short crisp sentences, some flowing philosophy in passing and a dumbed down science procedures - the author writes for a wider audience.

Some of the procedures like facial reconstruction from photograph and skull or detecting a bullet with a metal detector were fascinating. The motives in most cases including suicides were more common sensical and most of the criminals confess on being caught unlike in movies and mysteries. Real life is a lot less exciting than a detective mystery but people are no less mosntrous.

A very readable non-fiction book.

After reading this book I had a newfound respect for forensic surgeons as their work is extremely difficult as they have to literally read what the dead say, and at the same time often they have to come across legal hurdles. The contribution of forensic surgeons in solving a mystery/crime often goes unnoticed, but this book made me realise how important their role is/ is and how precise they need to be while conducting the research.

Written by a professor and a police surgeon this book is a collection of real-life encounters and an experience as a forensic surgeon. This book is originally written in Malayalam and translated to English.

This book is a compilation of the strangest and most difficult cases (in a form of a journal) that Dr. B Umadathan solved while he served in the police and CBI. While reading this book I was glued until the last page as it contained so many spine-chilling cases and murder mysteries, no wonder why he is also known as Sherlock Holmes of Kerala.

Being a fan of detective stories and murder mysteries, true crime has always been a comfort genre for me, whether it’s movies, documentaries, or books. Therefore “Dead Men Tell Tales” was a very soul-satiating read for me.

Unlike fiction, the real heroes who decode the mysteries of criminal cases are people who work under forensic intelligence. Dr. Umadathan being one of the pioneers in this field has penned his memoir in a very simple format. His writing style is as inclusive as possible and this is the factor that stood out to me the most.

The translation is done very well because the reading experience was nothing other than being extraordinarily engaging. A lot of famous and talked-about cases are mentioned and it was fascinating to know about all the work that goes behind before the culprit(s) are caught.
The responsibility that forensic officials carry on their shoulders is pretty massive. After reading this memoir it reinforced the fact that forensic surgeons and the post mortem reports carefully crafted by them play a huge role in the successful deliverance of justice.

The author has systematically narrated his journey from being a student to being a confident forensic expert. His journey is noteworthy, beginning with minor cases and the severity of cases increasing as he gains experience and seniority. But all the cases were significant in their regard. Undoubtedly any case of unnatural death is disturbing and most of the time it is bone-chilling. All the cases mentioned taught me something about human behavior and the psyche. I also learned quite a few things about the administrative authorities and law and order of our land. The author has penned down his insights and experiences in this memoir in a lucid format.

So overall, I would recommend this book because it has something interesting for everyone. And, if you are a true crime enthusiast then do not miss this memoir filled with rare, thrilling, and mind-boggling cases that are sure to make you question the diversity of darkness in human nature.

The Memoir of a Police Surgeon

Detective stories have captivated our conscience in a manner where we tend to believe that after a murder is taking place, the Police Dept will not be able to do anything and then a tall, observant, sharp-faced detective will be needed to solve the cases. However, the real scenario is far from our imaginary ideas. What we blissfully ignore is that there is a department called the forensic branch that performs a very important role in solving all kinds of crime. My only interaction with the forensic branch was when I used to watch CID regularly.

As mentioned earlier, Dead Men Tell Tales is a memoir of a Police Surgeon. The book starts with a piece from Bible which made me intrigued then and there. The lucid language and the vivid description made a reader’s experience quite smooth. The amateurish questions are already answered with logic and explanation that will make sure that the writer and the reader are on the same page.

The author has taken care of the very fact that the enjoyment quotient does not get erased. One will get an insight into forensic science and the kind of effort forensic doctors put into their work. The author has methodically penned down his voyage from a student to a police surgeon. The parallel flow of his describing us different case scenarios and his growth as a forensic expert get synchronized and made the required pace. The book has also mentioned all the mental pressures that a surgeon has to face. The translation by Priya K. Nair did justice to the original work.

Emotional dwelling, mental stress, pressure from government and media, compulsion to do the right and what not- this memoir is a testimony to the fact that all superheroes are not known to us. Some remain outside the limelight as well.  

In certain places, too many details of the current status his colleagues were given, which I understand the author wanted to pay as an encomium, felt unnecessary and confusing at times. To sum up I had a great experience reading the memoir.

Can the dead tell their stories?

Dead Men tell tales is a book by Dr. B. Umadathan, a forensic surgeon says that they can. This book was first published in 2010 in Malayalam. It is the doctor's memoir and he is popular as "Sherlock Holmes of Kerala."

In this memoir he shares his experience of how through forensic science a lot can be discovered like the cause of death, natural or unnatural, suicide or murder even what and how it occured. It reveals the secret behind what is hidden from plain sight.

He also talks about being subjected to dirty politics, accused of manipulating or hiding evidence, lying just because he brought out the truth when the other was trying to use a certain death to fulfill their agenda.

Honestly the narration was good and gave a lot of insight into the forensic and crime world. I am someone who watches a lot of crime thrillers so I might not have felt thrilled by about 80% of cases but that is my personal experience. It will be very thrilling for you if you are new here or someone with not much information in this area.

The book opens to any ordinary reader a world of forensic intricate details involved in solving an unusual death or any other modes of crime. This is a good read but what I would prefer is the narrative could’ve been a bit more intriguing such that it can absorb the reader completely and give them a nail biting experience because many chapters had stories that had that potential.
Being said that, since it is autobiographical, the above thought can be debatable…

This book is a dictionary to all famous murderers/crimes of the last 4 decades, covered from a forensic investigative point of view. So much unknown presented in a layman’s format.

Dr Umadathan's memoir presents the perspective of one of the first career State forensic surgeons in Kerala. It covers the experiences of the doctor through the years as a police surgeon, conducting post mortems, providing expert advice in investigations and sometimes, even providing inputs on the ground.

The chapters are in a simple format, following the linear progress of an investigation. Most chapters are dedicated to a single case, some have multiple similar cases clubbed together. The vast number of cases presented in a simple manner cover various murders and suicides due to reasons ranging from mental issues and arsonies to drownings and insurance frauds. The illustrations to explain the scientific rationale and techniques used in the investigations make the experience of reading the book richer.

The author laments the bystander's apathy when they are late to inform the police or are unwilling to help the officials recover dead bodies and would rather choose to ignore or stand watching passively. He manages to brings out the pressures of managing the public outcry following a heinous incident or when the investigation leads to an outcome contrary to the public's opinion (Eg - A high profile apparent murder that turns out to be a suicide) The book also presents the extent to which investigators go to prove their perspective in court, collecting as many pieces of evidence as possible to corroborate their case and make sure there is a successful conclusion to it.

The doctor goes to great lengths introducing various stakeholders, sometimes going off on a tangent, explaining where they've ended up, of they're still good mates (and if they are still living - comes with the job, I guess! :'D) This becomes unintentionally funny at times. I found the engagement between the State police department and the health department interesting. This provides insights on how cooperation and conflict impact the process of resolution when multiple stakeholders are involved. Similar observations on a federal level are presented, with the engagement of the CID in some cases adding nuance. The book brings out both sides of the spectrum, where multiple stakeholders lead to a speedy, successful investigation and where they end up being a hindrance. The author liberally presents his opinions on all of the involved characters.

A chapter highlights India's brain drain- the doctor struggles with finances and makes the tough decision to move to Gaddafi's Libya looking for better opportunities. The doctor's perspective on Libyan society and healthcare make for fascinating reading.

All in all, a thrilling and educating read. Kudos to the translator on managing to keeping the material intact and ensuring that it is not lost in translation. I wonder if the doctor mentions the scientific terms in Malayalam in the original text (or if the words have been adapted to the language)

Reading 'Dead Men Tell Tales' by Dr. Umadathan took me a month to finish. Some of the cases are intriguing, while others fall short.

The author thanks everyone who helped throughout the book. Including more pictures would have made it more engaging.

Overall, it was a decent read and a refreshing genre for sure.
