In my mind, Maple Valley, Iowa is synonymous with the Walker Family. They go hand-in-hand, and bring warm smiles and joy every time I think of them. I want to live in Maple Valley and, although I LOVE my own family dearly, I want to be adopted into the fabulously imperfect Walker family. I love that Melissa Tagg knows how much her readers adore this little town and family and found a way to bring us more stories that take us “home.”
Melissa Tagg began her Enchanted Christmas Collection last year with her novella One Enchanted Christmas. It is set in our beloved Maple Valley, Iowa and we are introduced to the Renwycke family. This is a splintered family that is struggling to navigate their lives independently. Well, all except Drew. He’s the oldest of three siblings and his deepest desire is to reconnect his family. Guess what? The Renwycke family has captured my heart just as much as the Walkers! It must be the town…or, more likely, Melissa Tagg’s gift for writing amazing, relatable characters who tug on your heart strings. One Enchanted Christams is Drew’s story. If you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, do yourself a favor and start there.
One Enchanted Eve is Drew’s brother’s story. Collin, who we first meet in Drew’s story, is a charmer, who’s led a colorful life and truly desires to settle down and prove to his family that he can become the responsible brother, uncle and son he thinks he ought to be. He is in culinary school in Denver because he believes that his route to this goal is becoming a pastry chef. Enter, Ryland…his culinary teacher. She is a no-nonsense, by-the-book (or, more accurately, by-the-recipe-card) kind of teacher. She is very focused on her end goal of getting out of teaching and back into the bakery. As you can imagine, they clash. In an unexpected twist, they end up traveling together to Colin’s hometown of – you guessed it – Maple Valley.
This story deals with our hopes and dreams, and seeing those dreams dashed. It deals with family relationships – that aren’t always as nice and loving as we’d hope them to be. It deals with difficult issues like Alzheimer's Disease and substance abuse. It deals with love and forgiveness and giving one another a second chance. It deals with thinking outside the box, following our dreams and facing our fears.
One Enchanted Eve is a novella. You don’t expect to be touched so much by such a short story. One thing I’ve learned though, after reading all of Melissa Tagg’s books is to always expect God to touch you through her writing. God works through Melissa Tagg to draw us nearer to Him – to show us His love – to share with us Himself through the characters in her stories.
I sure hope that the Renwyckes are in our next Walker book because, well…Christmas 2017 is a long way off and I’m already looking forward to reading Leah’s story – and hearing how things are going with Drew and Colin! ;) Enjoy!
