Too much romance and religion, not enough dog or mystery. It doesn't always work to pick a book by it's cover (in this case a gorgeous chocolate lab).

I really did like the story, but the line “it’s my fault” was way overused by the main male protagonist, thereby, making it hard to believe that he was a stable FBI agent and that was because he carries the guilt of something that had happened in his childhood. Not riding himself of the guilt, he transfers the same guilt complex to his current cases.

Just couldn’t get over this glaring thorn, thus my rating.

An enjoyable tale of an FBI agent, his dog, and the woman who witnesses a murder. Because of a few gaps in the action and some choppy sentences, it didn't quite make it into four-star category, but I definitely enjoyed reading it. The action is non-stop, and the bad guy is not easily daunted in the least. He just keeps coming after them. At times I wondered where his allies were, though; seems like he'd have had some form of backup in the wings. I guess we'll see those guys in the next book??

The romance was very hasty, though Reed did a good job of capturing the emotions and circumstances that brought Leo and Alicia together and making it believable for both to fall in love so fast.

The dogs were so fun! I love covers with dogs on them, and having FBI dogs was something I'd never thought much of before; generally I think of them in the context of local police.

I received a free copy through NetGalley for review purposes.

What a great start to this newest continuity series from Love Inspired Suspense. Romance, great characters, nail-biting action and suspense and DOGS! Heroic dogs at that.

Leo and True make a fantastic team – and Alicia’s heart won’t be the only one racing when you see them in action! I loved the insight into their training, their work, and their partnership, particularly in regards to True’s skill of finding bodies underwater and what they do when bullets start flying. Alicia, Charlie, and her dad are also great characters – people you feel you could easily befriend for life. Alicia’s bravery is just one of the reasons you’ll fall in love with her as quickly as Leo does. Her warmth and sincerity are more marks in her favor!

Probably my favorite thing about the book (besides the romance…. because, well, duh.) is the continuing story arc that will carry on through all the books in the series. The immediate story line that begins with Alicia witnessing the aftermath of a murder does reach a conclusion but the plot elements that tie the whole series together will be ongoing. And I gotta say – in this series – I am dying (perhaps not the best choice of words) to see how it all plays out.

Bottom Line: Guardian by Terri Reed will keep you on the edge of your favorite reading chair! Danger, action, suspense – it has it all. A sweet romance and a close-knit team round out the mix and add to the emotional depth overall. Additionally, an intriguing subplot that will continue through the rest of the series grabs your attention and has you eagerly waiting for the next book!

I always enjoy these K-9 suspense stories. This year's linked series of romance and crime stories by different authors, has to introduce all the cast and their dogs, which can feel top-heavy, but mainly the tale follows a chocolate Labrador and handler, who is a male FBI agent. They are experienced at detecting a body underwater, a technique which I've read about in a memoir by an Irish mountain rescue dog trainer. Called upon after a body is reportedly dumped in a Wyoming river, they end up protecting the witness to the dumping, who is a female schoolteacher with a young child.

As the books are inspirational expect good behaviour on the part of the adults and a strong moral compass. This is also packed with danger and action so hold onto your hat. If you like smart, highly trained dogs you will love this book and I recommend checking Terri Reed's other works.

I downloaded an ARC from Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.

Mini-review:
I thought this was a good start to a series. Some things annoyed me like Alicia's constant preachiness and some misuses of words, or plural when it should've been singular, but other than that it was good. I like the fact that they included River on the cover, as well as true and I also am upset because most times with a prequel you read it after the first book, but with this series you need to read the prequel novella first, so I was minorly spoiled for that.

Fan-cast:
Leo Gallagher - Ryan Gosling
Alicia Duncan - Cobie Smulders

Squuueeeallll. New Love Inspired Suspense continuity series! With K-9s!!!!! I'm so ecstatic. And Terri Reed does an awesome job of starting things off right from the prologue which sets the stage for the continuous suspense and introduces readers to all the law enforcement players. Woot! And I love that the whole team is actively involved. Can't wait to read each of their stories.

Leo and True are the heroes of Guardian. Perfect title-tie-in by the way. I'm not sure who I fell for harder -- the two-legged or the four-legged heart-throb. Edging towards the chocolate lab, I think. :-) No worries though, Alicia is more enamoured with Leo than True. Romance isn't high on her list of priorities...especially with a killer stalking her! Intrigue and danger lurk on every page, but can't quite squelch the growing attraction between Leo and Alicia. But they both struggle with leaving the past behind and trusting God with their future. Deliciously complicated stuff to contemplate when not dodging bullets.

If you are not familiar with continuity series, there is an over arcing suspense thread that is not solved as it plays out over six books. However, the immediate suspense is solved, new clues are collected to carry over into future stories and, of course, the hero and heroine get their happily ever after.

Awesome start to a stellar new series.

Guardian was a good LIS. I really loved how dogs played such a big role in the story. I found the suspense great and I also liked the romance, although it did seem somewhat rushed. The beginning chapter(s) of the book were so good and grabbed my attention right away.

All in all, I recommend Guardian and look forward to reading more books in this series.

I loved the K-9 aspects to this book, but then I love dogs so that wasn't a surprise to me. The romance was a little fast, but I guess intense situations can do that? Though the way it ended just seemed like she was doing what she did when she was younger all over again. All in all, it was just okay to me.

Pretty good. I'm not a fan of books where the other person "completes" them. I like them to be healed and whole before getting into a relationship. It's dysfunctional otherwise :/ also they got engaged before they even went on one date. Why? Lol

GUARDIAN by Terri Reed is the first book in the Classified K-9 Unit series. It’s the story of Alicia Duncan, a young widow living in Settler’s Valley, Wyoming with her Dad. After her husband was killed and finding out that her husband, who she thought loved her, had deceived and cheated on her, all she wants is to get her life back together and focus on her 3 year old son, Charlie. There is no way she will let a man into her life to hurt her again. When she witnesses a murderer dumping a woman’s body in the lake, she is determined to find justice for the woman and closure for the victim’s family.

FBI agent Leo Gallagher is working on the Dupree syndicate crime spree with his K9 partner True, a Chocolate Lab, when his fellow partner, Jake Morrow is kidnapped with his K9 partner Buddy, a Belgian Malinois, left behind injured. Once again, he feels like he’s a failure. He couldn’t cover his partner’s back any more than he could save his sister. It was only by the grace of God that he came upon Ben Smith all those years ago as a youngster on the run – from his situation and his memories. It was his taking him to Crescent Ranch and giving him the chance of a good life that eventually led him to law enforcement. Because of his past, he stays professional and doesn’t allow anyone or anything to become personal – even if he has become very tight with the people he works with in the K9 unit. That’s why he MUST find Jake!

When the crime Alicia observes and Leo’s search for Jake cause their paths to cross, they hope that solving one will help with the other. Leo is willing to stake his life to protect Alicia and Charlie who he is unmistakably growing fonder of with each passing day. No he must keep focus. His job is to protect them and keep them safe. That he will do with all his ability because he has no right to a normal life – not after what all that has happened. Alicia sees that Leo is a man of his word, has a tender heart towards Charlie and even the admiration of her very judgmental Dad could he be more than her protector doing his job? What is with that overpowering feeling and sparks when they are close or touch?
Can Leo and Alicia each come to terms with the past and lay it at God’s feet to have a chance at a future? Can Leo protect her from her stalker before she herself becomes one of his victims?

Terry Reed has delivered an amazing start to what I’m sure is an awesome series. I love the way she has you going back and forth between a sweet, but complicated romance to the fast turning pages of “Oh my!” excitement. She definitely has a talent to keep you cheering on the good guys, both two legged and four legged, and hoping on hope for a happily ever after all the while weaving a thread of faith throughout the story. Highly recommend this book to anyone that loves a great Christian, well written book that will satisfy your desire for danger, suspense, romance AND K9’s.

GUARDIAN can definitely be read as a standalone book. However, there’s still the question of will Reginald & Angus Dupree get prosecuted for their crimes and where is Jake. I know I will be searching out the other books in this series to find out as well as the stories of the other K9 officers we were introduced to in this first book.

The new K-9 Love Inspired multi-author series takes off with intense, danger-filled story riddled with life-threatening events, deadly collateral damage, and keen teamwork from the FBI unit and local law enforcement. Mix in a whirlwind romance, puppies, and a cute little boy and you have the makings of a winner tale.
The Prologue in the story set the stage for the series, with one of their own hurt and missing in action, kidnapped by the escaping criminals, the rest of the FBI's K-9 team is willing to do anything to save him and bring the ones responsible to the justice.
I love the K-9 stories for many reasons, one of them being the loyal partnership between the dogs and their handlers. Those units have a unique harmony and understanding between them, that I admire immensely, and enjoy reading about.
The danger and threat towards Alicia Duncan, and possibly to her son, is constant and escalating. The steps taken to secure her and her family were logical and believable. I loved that modern technology was used as part of the story, somehow bringing it up a notch, and giving it a fresh feel. The clues come along take them one step forwards and two steps back. But the unit is not about to give up, the determination to get the killer lurking around strengthen the closer he gets to Alicia and Leo.
Leo Gallagher is a stellar hero. He is likable, honest, and honorable. His faith in God is his guiding light and overcoming his childhood and the challenges he faced as a young child were admirable, a small miracle in itself that he was the man he is today. The only down faults are his stubbornness and control-freak nature that makes him take blame in every situation, even when there's no blame to go around.
Alicia Duncan is a teacher, mother, and a young widow of a police officer, who witnesses a crime. With unhappy marriage behind her, she is not open to a relationship, yet the attraction she feels towards Leo is palpable and transparent. She is fierce, tough, smart, and loving, nearly as stubborn as Leo, but able to make compromises. She is willing to stand for the victims of the heinous crimes and brave enough to help the law enforcement to identify the culprit she saw in action. She leans on her faith in God, and gladly share it with people around her.
I liked the chemistry between Leo and Alicia. Even though their emotions and attraction deepen fast and take root I felt their feelings to each other were believable and convincing. Alicia's little boy, Charlie, made them an instant family unit, where love, care, and protective feelings were evident.
A riveting and perilous start for the series, that showcased the abilities and the unity of the FBI's K-9 team, mixed with sweet and adorable love-at-first-sight romance that made me sigh and smile.
The mystery of their kidnapped teammate is not solved, but this story had a satisfying ending, leaving me eagerly waiting for the next installment of the series.

Guardian: Classified K-9 unit Book one is by Terri Reed. It is a Love Inspired Suspense by Harlequin.
FBI Agent Leo Gallagher will leave no stone unturned to find the missing FBI agent Jake. He feels guilty over Jake’s being taken by Angus Dupree, a man the FBI is very interested in locating. He also wants to locate Angus and arrest him. Now, because she witnessed a murder, Alicia Duncan is also in Angus’ sights. Leo is drawn in with the rest of the K-9 unit to protect Alicia and her son, Charles. Can he keep them safe and not fall for her? After all, there is no use in her falling for him, he is immune to women and children.
The book is very good and easy to read. It is short enough not to keep you up all night reading it.

I grew up reading Love Inspired books, many of the books I've kept over the years had more depth and interest, than current Love Inspired books. There have been too many books that I've read half-way thru to lose interest, or toss aside due to it's overt goody-two shoes main character.

This book, however, has given me faith again in the Love Inspired book series. It's a suspense, and it kept me intrigued and reading. I finished the book and the only thing I had to complain about, is that it was a continuation of the main story. Suppose I understand the purpose, but I am going to have to read at least five more stories before I get to the conclusion of the main plot.

That said, this story is about an FBI agent, Leo Gallagher. The main plot that will be going on in the next five stories is that a fellow FBI agent has been kidnapped. And Leo feels responsible. Then, there has been a murder in Wyoming, one witnessed by a young woman. There is a tie into his case, so he goes out to Wyoming, promising to protect this young woman and mother. There is someone who is determined to kill her, and Leo must do everything in his power to not allow that to happen.

Again, I really did enjoy this book. It could be a stand alone book, had it not been for the main story in the background. Considering this is the first book in the K-9 series, only time will tell as to if each story could be read out of order, or if you will need to read each book in order (in order to stay caught up with who is marrying who).

I received this from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.

I really love books that include dogs! Leo has to find his kidnapped teammate. Leo feels guilt over many things in his life, but Jake being kidnapped has really messed with his head. Alicia witnesses a body being dumped and then the killer comes after her and her son. With no leads on Jake's kidnapping, Leo goes to take lead on Alicia's case since it overlaps with one the FBI is currently working on. The danger is more imminent than either of them realize and Jake and his K-9 partner, True will have to put it all on the line to keep Alicia and her son safe.
Alicia was a great character. She is a strong woman, mother and daughter. She is terrified but determined. She will do anything for her son and father. Leo has issues from his past that make him think he can never be a family man. Alicia's son is determined to help him change his mind with his sweet ways. Leo and Alicia both have issues from the past that make them being together difficult but not impossible. I liked all the interaction with Leo's team and their K-9 partners. The story flowed well and was one of those that just struck a cord with me.
It was a 5/5 for me. I really didn't want to put this one down.

Thank you to the author/publisher for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.

This story touched my heart. Alicia Duncan had moved home to take care of her dad after her husband was killed on the job working as a policeman. She was now a single mom to her cute little 3-year-old son Charlie. The story starts out where she was taking her son fishing. She witnessed someone in a speed boat dumping a dead body out of his boat. The person saw her and her son, and knew she had seen him too. The story starts off intense with her, and her son running for their lives.

Leo Gallagher with the FBI and his K-9 partner True was assigned to protect Alicia and her family. I loved the way he bonded with Charlie, and her dad. I also loved the romance weaved throughout the story between Leo, and Alicia. Someone was determined to kill and silence Alicia. Leo was just as determined to keep her alive. This book had great action, and suspense. I really loved both Leo, and Alicia. Leo was an honorable man. If he said he’d do something, he did. He never broke a promise, not even to a 3-year-old. Alicia never showed fear. She faced any threat head on. She would always protect the ones she loved.

I loved this book, it will go on my list of favorites.

I really liked Guardian by Terri. I understand that it was written for a K-9 series with other authors and this wasn’t “book 1” but they can all be read as a stand-alone. I just feel like the story wasn’t finished up here enough. The whole thing starts as if we’re going to find who took Jake. I feel we never got any closer to that and it definitely took a back burner to the romance of the book. We did a bit of an improvement and a killer taken out. But I just feel like it left me wanting so much more. The world building was great and Leo and Alicia both had several layers. But I just felt we didn’t get to dive deeper into any of the characters. We hear a bit about Alicia’s previous relationship with her baby daddy wasn’t a good one, and he went to prison or something prior to not being alive anymore. But we were never told why, when Leo shared his bit of a secret which wasn’t even his fault. I don’t know, I really really wanted to like this, but now I’m unsure if I’ll read more of the series to find out what happens. 3.5 stars. The characters were great, just didn’t get enough context.

When an agent is kidnapped and a woman witnesses a crime, a dangerous journey begins. But, with k-9 teams joining the crew, there just may be light at the end of the tunnel.
Leo watched his fellow agent get kidnapped and Alicia witnesses a man dumping a body. Two incidents are connected by one crime family and lives are in danger. Leo does his best to protect Alicia and her family while his team searches for the missing agent. Several close calls and time spent together results in a growing relationship and a blossoming romance.
If you like suspense with romance, then you will enjoy this story.
A few cons to note that in no way affect the story overall (just things I picked up). After the marriage that Alicia experienced, the fears and lack of trust seemed to be awfully easy to get over or just were glossed over. Also, unless I missed something, the killer told Alicia where the other two women were but it never says she told anyone else. Kind of a big deal even if just mentioned quickly.
Great story, nice read. Would recommend.

Can they stay one step ahead of a killer?

If Guardian hadn't been written by one of my favorite Love Inspired Suspense authors, Terri Reed, I would have wanted to read it anyway. It doesn't take much to figure out that I'm a soft touch for anything featuring dogs, and this one has TWO furbabies on the cover!

So, Terri Reed is a favorite of mine in the romantic suspense genre and Guardian totally lived up to expectation. The story kinda starts out with a bit of a bang and then took off on a wild ride of danger and romance. The characters are likable and the action kept me interested and engaged, not to mention unable to put the book down.

This book is part of a continuity series, one that I'm definitely going to have to read, but could be read standalone, though, the main conflict won't be resolved until the final book.

Guardian is a great start to what will be one exciting series and is a must read for Terri Reed fans and lovers of romantic suspense.

Tense but satisfying

Well written, sweet and suspenseful action filled story. The concept of a FBI K9 unit is interesting. Murder, kidnappings, threatened witnesses and crime syndicate criminals all overlap with a beautiful character study. Leo, an earnest, honest and diligent, but guilt ridden, FBI K9 agent with his loyal chocolate lab True must protect the lovely widow Alicia, who witnessed a horrific crime. Alicia has returned home to Wyoming to her father's farm after her police officer husband's death. She and her young son are trying to adapt to their new life, and now face a dangerous situation. Leo and Alicia face their situations with faith, integrity and bravery. Even though they doubt themselves, at times, they rely on core values that see them through risky situations, physically, intellectually and romantically. This is a great first book for what appears will be a compelling series.

I thought Guardian was very intense and I had a hard time putting it down! Lots of action and drama to keep one entertained the whole time. Plenty of men and women in uniform and K-9s to come to ones rescue of which I like!

Alicia Duncan witnesses a man dumping a body in the lake and when he spots her she grabs her son and runs for their lives. Her best bet is to get both she her son to the local police department to seek protection. Little does Alicia know that her life is going to take a crazy turn forever.

FBI agent and K-9 handler Leo Gallagher is sent immediately out to Wyoming to look into the case and to see if their key witness had been killed. As well as to keep an eye on their new witness and her son. Not expecting to have such a strong connection with the victims and they with him. Will Alicia and Leo survive this crazy ordeal and find love?

3.5 rating. This is the first installment in the multiple author Classified K-9 Unit FBI series. Terri Reed opened this series with a bang. I really enjoyed this book. It was well written and full of action.
Leo Gallagher, K9 FBI Special Agent, and his K9 partner, True are sent to Settler’s Valley, Wyoming. A woman who looks like their key witness in a murder trial has been abducted and it’s their job to find her. Leo and True meet Alicia Duncan and her family when she reports a woman being dumped in the river where she and her son, Charlie were fishing. Leo and True complete a water search for the victim and stay on to keep Alicia safe because the killer has already tried to kill her.
Leo doesn’t feel he deserves love or happiness. Alicia doesn’t trust men or relationships thanks to her deceased husband who was unfaithful. These two people find love and trust with each other.

This is the first in a series, by different authors. I enjoyed this book. On the surface, it is an easy read. The faith part of it is quite believable, except for the load of guilt Leo is carrying around. Without giving out spoilers, I think that he would have worked/prayed through that more, especially since I think that there is some sort of psych stuff he would have gone through while joining the FBI. I can understand her side a little better, since her loss was more recent.
The small town vibe is good. The life of an agent or other law enforcement person is not glamorized. The dogs felt true to life.
I look forward to more in the series.

A predictable Romance...Beach reading.

Nothing wrong with that.

Alicia a young widow is beautiful, feminine but...strong.

Ben, A handsome, masculine FBI agent with stunning green eyes comes to Alicia's rescue when she witnesses a murder. The murder is connected to an FBI case and thus the meeting of the two.

It's love at first sight...almost. Both fall in love but both think it's unwise to let the other know...but they do kiss (interesting?) Do you really kiss someone you don't want knowing that you are in love with them ?...

Anyway it's a fairy tale romance and all live happily ever after.

Book 1 in this new-to-me series kept my attention. Alicia and her son Charlie are out for a day of fishing when she witnesses a man dumping a body - and he sees her! Now she is in a race against time to keep her son safe and protect her family's ranch. Working with Leo and his canine partner True becomes challenging when her feelings for the agent become more than just platonic. Leo is fighting an inner battle with guilt when one of his fellow officers is abducted and refuses to let his own personal feelings come to the forefront. Can they work together to catch the killer and protect Charlie before it's too late?
