A Man of the Word Life of G. Campbell Morgan

Rate this book
Since the death six years ago of that prince of Bible expositors, G. Campbell Morgan, there has been incessant demand from the Christian public for the publication of an official biography. Such a work was not to be lightly undertaken or swiftly completed, for it must be of heroic proportions in keeping with the character of the man. Now it is here, the product of Dr. Morgan's personal diary, the family's own records, and the contributions of a host of friends the world around. Dr. Morgan had four sons, all ministers; this book is the work of the wife of the eldest son, and is beautifully printed and illustrated. It is a success-story in the finest sense of the term. Rejected for ordination while he was quite young for what was considered the inferior quality of his preaching, Campbell Morgan by native ability and laborious toil achieved international fame. Under his preaching the Bible literally sprang into life and multitudes of people were enthralled. So great was the demand for his sermons that his books gained circulation throughout the English-speaking world. This biography deserves a permanent place in every Christian's library. It is the record of one who adorned the Gospel ministry—a profound thinker, an inspiring speaker, and a reverent humble servant of Christ.

I enjoy reading biographies of great people. I can always learn from their experiences. Dr. G. Campbell Morgan (1963-1945) was such a man; a preacher, dubbed by some as “Prince of Preachers”, who preached in England and the United States. I had his biography on my shelf for a few years now and just recently read it: “A Man of the Word”, by his daughter-in-law, Jill Morgan. I was not disappointed. I was impressed by his love for God’s Word, the energy and time he put into reading and studying it, and the way he explained it that attracted thousands to hear and to learn. Here’s a quote from the book, “A balanced standard of values, an adherence to purpose, a sure and authoritative faith, an insatiable desire for knowledge, a prodigious capacity for work – these made up the pattern of Campbell Morgan’s life.”

Reading the book made me want to know, understand and teach the Bible even more. I recommend it to whoever enjoys biographies, whoever wants to preach.

Nice to come across this bio. Given that Morgan died in 1945, and that he wrote all his books before that, (lol) it is probably not a significat book for many today.
I have read many of his books, but had not been aware of his 'life pathway' so was pleased to do so.
He was an amazing man of God. Son of a preacher, who was the son of a preacher, and Campbell's four sons were all ministers too.

This book did not have the same mind-shaping influence on me that I know it has had on others before me. I wonder if this is because those people have taken their insights and worked them into our church life so that what were insights to them is simply my normal experience of church life and pastoral ministry. The book did give me a greater appreciation for ministry and the religious situation at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century.
