She is the ‘savage’ of the Red Petticoat Saloon, a white woman raised by Indians only to be ripped from her adopted family by enemy soldiers and—with her half-breed son in tow—forced back into a life she does not remember or want. She does not smile; she does not trust, but she will, for a few extra dollars, put her buckskins on before taking a man to bed. Called Emerald, she has bitten more customers than she has forgiven. It never once occurred to her that anyone would find that treatment enamoring… until the day of the Great Brawl when the eldest Drake brother stormed the Red Petticoat in his vengeful hunt for Gabe and the youngest, Garrett, tackled her to the floor. She’d lived up to her reputation that day, grinding her teeth into the palm of his hand until she tasted blood, and forever won herself the erstwhile affections of a man who refused to understand the concept of ‘get lost’. No one knew how to hide behind a smile like Garrett Drake. Haunted by a past he would never honor with words, he knew the soul-biting pain of incorporeal scars when he saw it. And from the moment he clapped eyes on Emerald—and she clamped her sharp little teeth on him, painting her lips with his blood—Garrett recognized his suffering soul’s long absent mate. She was prickly, temperamental, tense… afraid… what about that could draw him as intensely as it did, he had no idea, but the more she insisted he go away, the more impossible he found it to leave. And then soldiers came to Culpepper Cove with orders to remove Emerald’s very young son to a reservation in which she could not go. After that, leaving ceased to be an option. Armed with an off-kilter joke and a smile, Garrett allied himself to the woman he loved…whether she wanted him to or not. Because she was warming to him, by God, and that right there made everything he was about to do worth it. DISCLAIMER: This book contains the spanking of adult women and sexual scenes. Warming Emerald is the eleventh book in The Red Petticoat Saloon series. Maren Smith penned this delightful historical western romance. Set in Culpepper Cove, California. This book focuses on Lydia (Emerald) and Garrett Drake. Emerald is a white woman raised in an Indian camp. She married her best friend, an Indian brave. Together they have one son, Paquah. After a couple of years of marital bliss, her husband dies. This sadness is followed by Lydia and Paquah’s removal from the camp. She is taken to the town of Shady Springs and is placed in the foster care of Myron and Millicent Crenshaw. Millicent is a vicious and spiteful shrew. She exudes a prejudice toward Indians and half-breed offspring. She condemns Lydia for falling in love and having a son with an Indian. She makes Lydia’s life miserable. Lydia leaves and ends up in Culpepper Coves as a soiled dove working at The Red Petticoat Saloon. There she meets Garrett Drake. Lydia (Emerald) tries to keep her distance but Garrett is determined to make her his wife. He continues to court her. Do Emerald and Garrett end up together? Will Millicent’s evil acts continue toward Emerald? What will happen to Emerald and Paquah? Will there be a happy ending? To learn the answers to these questions, you need to read this book. Ms. Smith authored an outstanding character-driven plot. The two lead characters have a chemistry between them. Both Lydia (Emerald) and Garrett are multi-layered. She is feisty, strong, courageous, and yet vulnerable. He is strong, determined, witty, and charming. Yet, he is also reflective and contemplative. Ms. Smith’s plot line is well-thought out and flows smoothly. I enjoyed her use of engaging and witty dialog. Particularly, I enjoyed the banter between Gabe and Garrett. Ms. Smith masters the use of descriptive language. One memorable scene that stand out is the milk shots scene between Paquah and Garrett as Garrett comforts the young boy after awakening from a nightmare. Another is when Millicent Crenshaw faces a gauntlet of Red Petticoats belting her with horse apples as she is escorted to jail. This one left me laughing in stitches. I was intrigued with the way Ms. Smith chose to hook readers with her use of a prologue. It provides part of Emerald’s backstory. The rest of her backstory, as well as Garrett’s, is revealed through conversations and internal dialog. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading Warming Emerald. Ms. Smith’s use of humor to lighten tense moments in her plot arc positively contributed to my enjoyment of this book. I encourage you get read this book. Happy Reading!
Another marvelous story in the Red Petticoat Saloon this one is written by Maren Smith, who tells the story of Emerald a white woman who lived with Indians, married and had a child. The government took the boy away to a reservation but not the mother who ended up at the Red Petticoat Saloon and met a Garret who is the younger brother of Cullen who was in a previous. We meet character from past series, Nettie, Rafe, Charlie and Jewel and a few others. Some of the antics had mr laughing out loud and I needed a tissue to wipe the tears away. Wonderful dialogue and terrific storyline. I volunteered to read and review this book.
Love, love, loved it! Loved the Gems; loved the Sheriff and all of the town characters. (Hated Millicent—but she deserved it!) This was a precious story about Garrett and Emerald which started with a brawl in the Red Petticoat Saloon, and the love story that developed between them. Extremely well written, and my favorite--a happy ever after ending. I was given this to read this as an ARC, and it was wonderful!
As a spanking aficionado(I have the t-shirt to prove it), I found this to be a DELIGHTFUL story and intend to share it with all my kinky friends! Thank you Maren for a wonderful story about wild, feisty women and the men who redden their bottoms and love their souls.
What should be a shallow sex romp between a working girl and a rancher, turns out to be an emotionally complex, true-to-character story of acceptance, prejudice, and tough decisions.
I LIKE TO THINK THAT I CAN TACKLE ANY PROBLEM. ESPECIALLY FROM THE BOTTOM UP.
I have read every single one of the Red Petticoat Saloon books and love them all. These are books that are each written by various authors, but all around the life and women of The Red Petticoat Saloon. Each book has several characters that will be in all the stories, Jewel, Gabe, Nettie, Charlie and several others. The stories each focus on a unique situation and gem, and this time, it is Lydia, who goes by the gem name of Emerald and her son Paquah, along with local rancher, Garrett Drake.
Garrett has been attracted to Emerald since the major brawl that happened months ago, along with his brother Cullen. The roughhouse encounter between Garrett and his attacker, Emerald, ended with her biting his hand and drawing blood. He can’t stop trying to pursue her, and she continually turns him down. Emerald does not trust men and has been dealt a harsh hand in life, but one she keeps under lock and key. “She’d become this…this shell of a woman swaddled in anger so prickly that it could be worn like a barbed wire shawl.” She loves and adores her four-year-old son, and knows that life will never be easy, because her son’s father was Indian, and he is branded a half-breed, by ignorant people.
Some people are nothing but trouble, and Millicent Crankshaw is a self-righteous troublemaker who is determined to wreak her havoc on two Indian children in the town of Culpepper Cove. When the military come to town, it is a good thing the Circuit Judge is also there and along with the Sheriff hold hearings for the charges brought against Stone and Paquah, just little boys.
The story had me laughing out loud so many times that I had tears running down my face at the comments, antics and various events that take place. I admire the determination of Garrett and how he never is judgmental of Lydia’s past or even her present situations. He knows he has had his own personal demons and he just want to be there for Lydia and Paquah. A true, knight in shining armor to wrestle away the dragons that haunt them. I love how the Gems all band together for those they call their family, and it proves that blood isn’t thicker than loyal friendships. Even when it lands all of them into serious trouble, “Your mouth is writing checks you hind end can’t cover,” Sheriff Justice warned. “When ears don’t listen, sometimes you can open them again by working the problem from the bottom up.” There are many heartbreaking moments as bits of pieces of Lydia’s life and trials unfold that lead her to Culpepper Cove. She has remained closed off emotionally, can she learn to trust a man again? “Because,” he whispered back. “I’m the one who loves you. Temper, teeth and all.”
Another great addition to the Red Petticoat series! I loved reading Jade's Dragon by Maren Smith, a previous part of the Red Petticoat series. The story of Cullen and Chin was so different and intriguing and I enjoyed it very much. One of my favorite parts of the book was the character of Garrett, who was Cullen's brother. So I was very pleasantly surprised to see another addition to the Red Petticoat series by Maren Smith, namely, Warming Emerald. This is Garrett's story. As readers of Jade's Dragon remember, Garrett has a very affable personality in contrast to Cullen's much more serious manner. Although Garrett was very happy for his brother and Chin, he couldn't help but feel the desire for a relationship of his own. And in a pivotal scene from Jade's Dragon, which is reviewed in Warming Emerald, Garrett feels he just might have met the woman for him. Unfortunately, the woman won't speak to him. Garrett doesn't let that stop him and pushes Emerald with a smile on his face and a bit of ingenuity. Just when he feels he is making headway, a serious situation arises which may change everything. Just know, Garrett refuses to give up without a fight. The book revisits all of the gems and characters from previous installments in the series. The author, one of my very favorites, writes a rich storyline with marvelous characters and vibrant scenes. She keeps Garrett witty and charming while allowing his deeper feelings to show. Emerald and a new character are brought to life with a haunting backstory that explains her current reasoning. A past villain is fleshed out fully and I seriously doubt she can be redeemed. But even there, the author allows for humor to lighten the mood. I believe that is Garrett's influence! Please don't miss this fabulous installment of The Red Petticoat series! I received an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This whole series is so well-written. Each book stands alone and yet, strengthens when read together. In this installment, we learn of Emerald's (Lydia's) story. After having lost her biological family, her adopted family, and having been mistreated by her foster family, Lydia finds herself at the Red Petticoat. Renamed as Emerald, she and her young son, Paquah, are warmly welcomed into a new family of sorts. Soon trouble arrives in the form of soldiers.
Meanwhile, Garret Drake has been attempting to woo Emerald ever since she bit him -hard- during a bar fight. Garret is not going to be deterred by Emerald's consistent refusals. He knows she is warming up to him. She just doesn't want to admit it yet. Even Paquah likes Garret. So when the soldiers arrive, Garret is ready to fight for what is his...
One thing I liked about this story is how well it weaved our favorite characters from the other books. Gabe, for instance, is really flushed out more in this story. I also liked the humor -banter between Garret and Gabe and, of course, the whole "apple" scenario had me chuckling out loud. The dialogue is so fitting for each character and so believable. Marin Smith creates such real characters with strengths and struggles. Further, the sexy scenes and the spanking scenes are well done and add to the story.
If you only read one book in this series because you are not sure if you would be interested, read this book.
I was so glad to see that the author decided to revisit the Drake Brothers. After Cullen's story I was really hoping Garrett would get his own gem. While not quite as dramatic as Cullen's story it is no less entertaining.
Like all the gems, Emerald's life has been a struggle. While still dealing with the death of her husband, Emerald was ripped from the arms of the only family she has ever known, simply because she is white and they are Indians. With her son in tow she lands on the steps of The Red Petticoat Saloon with no other options. Garrett is determined to win the heart of Emerald no matter what it takes. Rather than force his way into her life he decides to take the slow and steady approach and wait her out.
This was another very well written story in The Red Petticoat Saloon Series. Although the romance itself was relatively slow paced, the drama in the story really kept the story moving. I really like both of the main characters and Emerald's son Paquah added a very sweet element to to the story. I was very disappointed to see the book come to end. Too bad there aren't a couple more Drake brothers to continue on with the series.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher.
This is my honest review for my ARC copy. Back when I was first introduced to this genre of writing, I read Maren Smith’s books. It was the perfect intro to have. I was so delighted to see this latest book in the Petticoat Series. Lydia had a life that she came to cherish, raised by the Native Americans that accepted her when her family had been slayed when she was a child. She loved them and they, her. She married Maska, having a son, Paquah, before her husband died. Soldiers came to move ‘her’ people to reservations, and in the process, they saw her. They separated her from those she loved, her ‘father’ killed in trying to stop them from taking her. She ended up at the Red Petticoat Saloon and a life where her son’s heritage and her profession were more than frowned upon by some. Enter Garret…a man who knew Emerald would warm up to him in time. So much happens in this tale that I loved. The way the Gems stand up for her and her son…the ‘apple’ battle. Oh, I laughed. And we get to revisit all of the Gems…in all of their glory. I can’t recommend this enough. It was perfect.
Of all the books in this series this is my favorite (so far). I have always loved the couples in the previous books, but Garrett and Lydia shot to the front as my favorite. I think that I love them so much because they both have made choices in their pasts that they are not happy or proud of but they are both working to overcome these choices and find a better life. Garrett is just an amazing strong man that shows incredible patience, optimism and love when dealing with Lydia (Emerald). Lydia (Emerald) is a wonderful woman that deals with the obstacles that life presents her with grace, strength and determination. Together they are a golden pair! This book provides updates on several of the previous books’ couples and delivers the reader with a clear picture of how the gems and their surrounding folks have become a loving and caring family. I would strongly recommend that you not miss this book as you are in for a treat! Please note: I did receive a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for this my honest review.
I have read all of the books in this series and this is one of my favourites. Lydia has a child who is half Indian, her husband passed away but she stayed with her Indian tribe family. She was tore away from her family by soldiers after they assumed she was being held captive by them and her and her son were placed with foster parents. They were extremely cruel to her so she ran away and ended up becoming a red petticoat. Garret wants her but she doesn't trust anyone and doesn't feel she is worth the forever happiness. When her previous foster mother files charges against her son she starts to warm up to Garret as he supports her. A great love story with strong characters and a happy ending.
This story had me laughing, crying and absolutely glued to the pages from start to finish. Another great book by a brilliant author.
I received an ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Another wonderful addition to the Red Petticoat Saloon. One of the things I have really enjoyed about these books are that are the characters in the books are like family and they stick up for each other. Emerald has had some low blows in life and she has a hardened heart and is just not willing to open it up to a man that might hurt her again. She has lost a family, her husband, an adoptive father, and now she might loose her son two. If Garrett hadn't stuck up for and continued to try to warm her heart she might have lost her son because of a vile, hypocritical, racist woman that can't deal with the Indians around her. I was really pleased with Garrett's character and how he never gives up on Emerald. He is determined to show her that she deserves to be loved and cared for. This book also has some absolutely hilarious scenes in it that I won't spoil for you the reader. It is totally worth picking up though.
This is another great story in the series. It is part of the whole larger picture and a kind of sequel to Jade's Dragon. This story includes a child. It also examines a bit of the complex issues of the relocation of native Americans and the effect of whites living among the tribes.
Garrett wants Emerald from the minute she draws blood during a barroom brawl. But she has faced so much and lost so much that she isn't willing to let down her guard and has closed herself off to her emotions. She is also caring guilt about things that were out of her control.
Garrett is willing to help her deal with the guilt and is a patient man who is willing to be persistent. He feels like he's wearing her down but then a crisis situation arises that kind of speed up the time table of their relationship.
The story ends with hope of a better future for all of them but there is still plenty of work to be done to form the final bonds.
I received this book as an ARC read. Another great Red Petticoat story. Lydia, otherwise known as Emerald, makes her living with a red Petticoat. Gabe and Jewell take her in when she has nowhere else to go. Torn violently from the only life she has ever known, she struggles to make a new life with her young son. During a bar room brawl, with one bite, she captures Garrett's heart. Garrett charms his way into her closed up heart by warming her up with his charm. Jewel struggles with her feelings for Garrett amidst a fight to keep her son. If you like spanking and alpha men, you will not be disappointed. I absolutely love the Red Petticoat stories. All of them. This is another great installment.
Another great book in this series of The Red Petticoat Saloon. This one by Maren Smith is interesting and relatable and kept my attention all the way through until the last page. Garrett Drake farms along sided his brother Cullen and Emerald was a Gem at the saloon. Garrett came into contact with Emerald when his brother got into a fight at the saloon. That is when he decided to pursue his attraction for Emerald, he was determined to get Emerald to like him by any means possible. There is a twist, Emerald has a half breeded son. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and you will too. Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Another Red Petticoat masterpiece. I really don't want to do spoilers, but this was heart wrenching and had me teary in several places. Lydia/Emerald has been hurt and refuses to open her heart to Garrett. But Garrett, he refuses to give up on her. And that is what is so wonderful about him- his steadfast determination to win her over. No matter how much she pushes and fight and bites him. Just an amazing book. 5 stars! 10 stars! *I received this book as an ARC, but the review all my own.
I love that no matter how many stories in this series I read they are all different but all of a really consistently good quality. I love that each story is completely standalone & although the others characters are mentioned in this story, if you haven't read any others, it honestly won't affect your enjoyment at all. I loved the character of Garrett & sympathised with Lydia. This was not my favourite of the Red Petticoat Saloon books, but still a very worthwhile & enjoyable read.
For me this petticoat novel was really good maybe got confused in the beginning with the fight at the saloon and there was 2 characters i didn't recognize. other then that i loved this story i just don't know how the authors do it put all the new info but still keep the old characters the same and great. i can't wait for the next petticoat novel. These books are awesome they each have a HEA and no cliffs so all the better. keep up the great work authors :-)
Plenty of action going on in this book. Story centered around characters Emerald/Lydia, Paquah, and Garrett. Garrett is crazy about Lydia, her real name, but she doesn't trust anyone. Paquah is her son, who is very young. The intent of this story is to expose the prejudice people had for Indians, as well as clarifying Indians are human beings to be respected. Spankings are administered when deserved. Happy ending. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Wow, did this book pull me in and refused to let go, whew! Garrett was fantastic, he knew what he wanted and refused to settle. Lydia grabbed my heart and I just wanted to hug her. Together, they were smoking hot! Adored the ending! No spoilers here, buy and read it for yourself! You'll be glad you did!!
I totally loved this addition to the Red Petticoat Saloon series. The issue of racism in the book applies to attitudes people have today, so it was quite relevant. It was well written and the characters were very well done. Definitely one of the best in the series!
I VOLUNTARILY REVIEWED AN ADVANCE READER COPY OF THIS BOOK
