I thought the ring on my finger would do the trick and keep men away. All I wanted was to save my heart from shattering—again. The truth is, I'm not married. The ring was just a ploy—a ploy to keep me safe, protected from pain.
But then Marcus Riley came along with his goofy pick-up lines, and he saw right through the facade. He knew the truth, and he wanted me. God help me, I wanted him too--in so many ways. But love is a risk, a painful, scary risk. One I'm too afraid to take.
Unless... He's the one risk worth taking. But it just might come at a price.
I loved loved the hero and his cheesy pick up lines, he had me grinning like crazy. I loved how stalkerish and obsessed he became for her, he chased her and was relentless in his chase. (Love it when they chase). Heroine had trust issues because I get why she was like that but I was getting annoyed that she wouldn't trust the hero when the hero was nothing but PERFECT!!!
Note to ALL Authors: can you please stop writing OW drama in books?? This book was actually going so good that I was going to give it a high rating but the OW drama came out of nowhere. And I'm getting tired of unnecessary drama.
I thought I would rate this lower but the H was just too amazing for me to give it less stars! I loved how he chased her and never gave up! I also thought I was going to have problems with the h in the beginning when she kept turning him down but thankfully it didn't last for very long. I definitely could have done without the drama in the end though! I guess I could see how the author would think it fits in with the h's issues but OW drama is never the way to go. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from this author though.
Calculated Risk by Rachael Duncan- After a disastrous end to a relationship with a man she thought she would spend the rest of her life with Lydia now has decided to close herself off to love. A night out on the town with the girls changes things for her. Lydia meets Marcus at the club and she seems to have let her guard down. Marcus is funny and has told her every cheesy pick up line that has ever existed. After a dance Marcus thinks things are going well till he discovers the wedding ring on her hand. Lydia wears a wedding ring so she can keep men at bay. Marcus doesn’t mess with married women but something about Lydia’s situation doesn’t seem right. He can’t forget about her and hopes to see her again, Marcus has stirred something in Lydia but she has not gotten over what had happened to her and she is keeping her heart protected. Marcus is persistent and wants Lydia in his life. This was a cute story and I enjoyed the interaction between Marcus and Lydia. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. I give this book 5 stars. A funny, cute feel good story\.
I stare up at the ceiling waiting and planning his castration should we have to call someone for help.
My mother looks around the house, surveying the place like a robber would his next heist. She’s judging right now and hasn’t been here for five minutes.
That fluffy bastard is pretty pathetic… Sorry, what I meant to say is he’s a ferocious beast who’d have no problem stalking his prey.
You told me I should sell hot dogs because I already know how to make a wiener stand.
My Review:
Calculated Risk was my second Rachael Duncan experience, and I enjoyed both books with equal measure. Her characters are interesting, believable, and appealing, while her storylines are well-balanced, relevant, engaging, and well paced. In addition to the fun and sexy romance, the plot also contained twists of suspense and intrigue. I have to love a character who names her cat Spartacus – I just have to. The writing was often humorous with an ongoing bit between the two protagonists of him texting or calling her with cheesy come-on lines. Marcus was a perfect BBF, sweet, sexy, and smart. He made tremendous efforts in wooing and maintaining Lydia’s attention, which wasn’t easy as she was determined to resist the charm of all men given her poor luck in the romance department. I relished his creative, fun, and romantic gestures and adored these two as a couple.
Loved it! Funny, sexy, empowering, amazing!!! Short and sweet review. I actually give this book 4.5 stars not just a flat 4 stars. I didn't give it 5 stars because there were a few things that frustrated me about Lydia. Marcus was AMAZING, all the law enforcement talk and situations just bought back so many memories.
Provided this book as an ARC for a voluntary and honest review.
This video review will be released November 7 after 9am.
Once again, Rachael Duncan has delivered a novel that is impossible to put down with witty characters, suspense, and a few plot twists that will have you laughing, crying, holding your breath, begging for mercy, and/or throwing your Kindle.
After being burned by love, Lydia thinks the only risks worth taking are none at all. She's sworn off guys, dating, and any sort of relationship with anyone other than her girlfriends and her cat. The thing with fate is that, sometimes, there's no escaping hurt, danger. It's a matter of choosing the lesser of the two risks, so we calculate which is safer, which will allow us to escape with the least amount of damage.
Especially when it comes to our heart.
What if it's not even a matter of realizing we're facing a decision at all—what if our heart's already made the choice for us? What if once we make it, we realize we're too late—that we spent too much time analyzing the situation instead of seizing the moment?
Can Marcus get through to Lydia, break down her walls, open her heart, and prove he's worth the risk? Can he save her from heartache, from pain, from danger?
One thing I love in books is when the characters have something special they share, like an inside joke or saying that no one else would really understand the significance, but they do.
Marcus has the best, cheesiest pick up lines. But only he can make them the sexiest, most romantic, and swoonworthy pieces of dialogue ever. And did I mention he's a hot cop that is a nearly perfect book boyfriend?
This is a stand-alone book, but at least one of the friends and siblings of Marcus and Lydia will be getting their own novel. I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of these characters' lives. In fact, I am dying for the next book. No pressure, but please hurry!
The author provided me with an advanced copy of this book.
“How can a person leave such an impression in such a short amount of time that they consume every thought?”
One chance meeting at a bar and suddenly Marcus and Lydia can’t keep their minds off one another. However, after being burned once, Lydia continues to push men away, even when she shouldn’t.
“I don’t know why you don’t go out and have fun. No one says you have to marry the guy, just let him take you out. Maybe he can dust the cobwebs off your vag for you too.”
Marcus, oh Marcus. Not only is he a hot cop, but he is a sweet soul and is determined to do what is best for Lydia, even if that means not being with her. But his persistence pays off, or does it?
I adored this story! Marcus was such a sweet man and he was absolutely perfect for Lydia. At times, I wanted to just shake Lydia to wake up and see what was in front of her, but at the same time I knew exactly where she was coming from. This story was sexy, sweet, and full of an amazing cast of characters. It had twists and turns, laughs and cries, and so much more. I cannot wait for Charlotte’s story next! ~ Tiffany, 4.5 Stars
This is a story about one person who was hurt so badly that she closed her heart off to anyone who remotely wanted a relationship with her. Then one night her friends all went out and were at a bar. Little did she know that the man with the cheesiest pick up lines may just know the secret of unlocking her heart. Will he be able to keep it unlocked or will it close forever and the key get thrown away?... You'll have to read to find out.
Rachel Duncan sucked me into the lives of Marcus and Lydia. I couldn't wait to see if they would get their HAE. Lydia is closed off and afraid to get into a relationship due to a bad breakup that left her completely broken. Marcus is totally BB material, he is sweet, patient, caring, funny and totally pulls out all the stops to get Lydia to give him a chance to show her not all guys are bad. This is definitely a love story you should take a risk on.
I liked Marcus with his dorky lines...reminds me of my hubby. I like how persistent he was. He never gave up. Lydia had her heartbroken and was gun shy on moving on. I can understand her hesitancy. I hated she couldn't trust Marcus completely. I get why but it was just difficult to read. Marcus stood by her though. Really want to see Seth get break an arm so he is this contract but then again I can be very vengeful. Stacy is a bitch...nuff said!
Overall - 5/5 Amount of Sex - 3.5/5 How Explicit - 3.5/5 Romance - 5/5
Calculated Risk by Rachael Duncan is a fantastic book which captivated me from the beginning. I could relate to many aspects and often felt a part of the story. I frequently wished that I could push a pause button on life and read the story in one sitting. The story line is just wonderful and full of drama, angst, love, humor, heartbreak and passion.
Lydia felt very real to me and I could relate to growing up with a critical parent and an a$$hole ex-fiancé. I understood why she would pretend she was married and guard herself. Marcus was so funny when pursuing her, but I completely fell for him when he stepped back and waited for Lydia. I think it takes a strong man to be able to do that!
This is a one – click, skip the TBR list, and buy now story!
“There’s so much we don’t know about each other, but I want to change that. Is it a risk? Yes, every relationship starts out that way. Take the risk with me Lydia. The biggest ones often lead to the best rewards.” ** Voluntarily reviewed from an advanced copy **
Yeah I did not like this book and it's mostly because of the hero. The initial meeting between the hero and heroine was pretty underwhelming, they're at a club and he bumps his elbow into her boob and tries to apologise by buying her a drink, I just found the whole thing meh and this scenario is usually reserved for the guy the heroine meets before the hero. But their flirting at the bar where he uses cheesy pickup lines got me on board and I thought that was a cute scene. After some more flirting, dancing and an almost kiss the hero notices a ring on her finger and shuts down when he thinks she's married but is pretty respectful when he's like "he's a lucky guy" and says goodbye and moves on. Up until that point I liked where this was going, but it didn't last long.
We then skip a month and move to the hero's pov and find out he's a cop and hasn't been able to stop thinking about the girl in the club. He then pulls a car over for speeding and is surprised to see it's the heroine. This is where it starting to go downhill for me because the little chemistry they had in the first chapter is not there anymore and it made their conversations so awkward. The hero asks the heroine out to coffee (despite being in a position of power in that situation and her telling him she's married), and after she turns him down he sets a court day for her due to the speeding but not because he's following the law but because he thinks what are the chances he'll see her again. I did not like that whatsoever.
After the court case debacle the heroine comes clean and tells the hero she's not married she just uses that as an excuse to keep men away and she shuts the hero down. The hero then decides to up his game by using information he got as a cop (her address) and leaves flowers and messages outside her door and car, asking her out. I found this so fucking creepy that after she turned down his offer of exchanging numbers he uses her private information that he has access to because of his job to contact her at where she lives. Listen I'm all for guys chasing the girl and whatnot but this was crossing a line for me, it would be one thing if he knew her address because she gave it to him for some reason but at this point she has told this guy she not interested in him. I feel like this entire thing was supposed to be seen as okay because he's a cop but to me it made everything worse. I can't ignore that in real life cops use their position of power to harass, stalk and abuse women and they pretty much always get away with it, so it was real hard for me to find any of this cute.
The nail in the coffin for me was when he hired the design firm she worked at, requests her to work on his house and uses a fake name so she doesn't know it's him. When she shows up and sees that it's him and gets rightfully pissed he uses the whole "would you have come if you knew it was me?", thing. HOW THE FUCK IS THAT AN EXCUSE?! If you knew that she wouldn't want to work with you maybe respect her fucking wishes rather than manipulating the situation again. After this I was done and just deleted this off my library.
I've read all but one of this author's books and I've loved the books that I've read from her so far, so I always look forward to a new book from her! I signed up to review this book for the Release Day Blitz, and after a lot of trouble trying to get the ARC onto my Kindle, I finally started reading it! After reading, I can say that I loved this book! It only took me a few sittings to read and the plot developed at a really good pace! It kept me intrigued and wanting to read on! There were also some seriously hot scenes and I loved the sexual tension between the two main characters! It leaked off the pages! I also enjoyed that their love developed over time and wasn't instant! I loved that there was some suspense and action in the plot too! I wasn't sure if there was going to be, but it came in about 70% or 80% into the book, which made me really happy! It added a lot to the plot and I zoomed through the action and suspense scenes to find out how it was all going to end lol! The characters were also amazing and made this book even better! Lydia was the main female character, and she was someone that had been burned a lot in her life! Not only had she been through a lot in her past relationship, but she also had a completely different attitude to her parents! This made my heart go out to Lydia because she deserved to be happy and not have to close herself off! Lydia came a long way in this book though and she slowly opened up and let her love interest in! Lydia also went through a lot with her love interest, but she was able to know the truth in her heart! Marcus was the main male character and love interest of Lydia! I loved Marcus a lot! He was seriously hot and he was so funny with Lydia! I loved his cheesy pick-up lines so much lol! I also loved how persistent he was with Lydia when he wanted a date with her! He refused to let her get away! I also loved how protective Marcus was of Lydia! It was easy to see this before the action scene, but the action scene really showed just how much Marcus was willing to sacrifice for Lydia! It made me love him even more lol! I also loved that this book was written from both Lydia and Marcus's point of views! It helped me connect more with both of them and allowed for more things to happen in the plot! I can completely understand why this book is a standalone! The plot was all wrapped up and the ending was left at the perfect place! I wish there were more books for Lydia and Marcus though because I would love to read more on them lol! A secondary character from this book is getting her own book though, which I'm really excited about! I'll definitely be reading it and anticipating its release! The cover for this book is also absolutely stunning! I love all this author's covers though lol! I love how well the cover suits the book and the models are the perfect Lydia and Marcus! Big thank you to Rachael and Enticing Journey Book Promotions for an ARC of Calculated Risk!
Calculated Risk by Rachael Duncan is the first book in the series. The main characters of this book are Marcus and Lydia. I'm looking forward to reading Charlottes story next in the series. I've read all of Rachael's books and with every story she writes, her writing improves immensely and I fall more in love with each of her characters she creates. Calculated Risk did not disappoint, its was beautifully written, full of love, angst, heartbreak and some suspense.
Lydia had her heart shattered by her ex boyfriend, she has sworn off men and relationships. Lydia thinks by wearing a ring on her left ring finger will keep men away and her heart protected. You see Lydia is not married she just pretends to be. Its just a ploy she's been using all along and it seems to be working just fine until one night out with the girls, Marcus Riley comes along with his striking good looks, goofy pick up lines, and his muscular body and it literally throws Lydia for a loop. Will Marcus be the one to finally mend Lydia's heart?
Marcus what's not to love about him he's the perfect gentleman. He has the cheesiest pick up lines any woman has ever heard, but Lydia seems to appreciate them. Once Marcus meets Lydia game on, he's going to do whatever it takes to go out with her. Marcus is relentless in pursing Lydia, the things he does and says had me laughing so hard and rooting for them. Marcus is a very smart man he knows that ring on Lydia's finger is a façade and he makes it his mission to prove just that.
Marcus and Lydia start out slowly as friends and then they fall into a relationship, it was enjoyable to watch them fall for one another and form a bond between the two. Unfortunately life throws them a curve ball and someone from Marcus's past resurfaces. Lydia's past insecurities and the fear of having her heart broken all over again come to light. Can their new relationship make it or will it be destroyed? Will they both get their happily ever after? You'll need to read it for yourself and find out.
"You're my safe place, Lydia. There's nowhere else I wanted to go."
Life throws curve balls, some thrown harder than others. Some make you make promises to yourself that are humanly impossible to keep, but some are determined to go to great lengths to do so. In Calculated Risk by Rachael Duncan, we meet this strong, independent, beautiful, successful interior designer Lydia Kelley, who is done with love. In fact, she forbids it. That is until she meets Marcus Riley, a quirky, witty pickup lines kind of guy who happens to be this incredibly hot, sexy, compassionate, determined, very muscular police officer. Their attraction is immediate. Lydia felt it so much so, she had to run away and fast. Little did she know Marcus was not about to let this woman, who had him captivated from their brief encounter, disappear. He goes to extremes to see her again which will have the reader laughing, crying, tearing their hair out as Lydia continues to stay true to her personal promise. Her heart is screaming both come closer..NO, stay away. “His eyes pierce through mine as he stares down at me intently. I’ve never felt like a person was looking into my soul, but that’s how it feels in this moment and I’m powerless to look away. Neither of us looks away and the only thing that exists is Marcus and me as this crazy connection builds with each second that goes by.” But as life would have it, nothing worthwhile comes without a price, without a calculated risk. Both have pasts that creep up, threatening this love. Maybe it was doomed from the start? Do Marcus and Lydia get their happily ever after or does this fairytale for them simply not exist? Rachael Duncan does it again as we fall in love with Marcus and Lydia fighting for this fairy tale of love. Duncan, brilliantly with words, makes the reader feel the pent-up tension and the different emotions one feels when they fall in love. This story is a perfect mixture of angst, suspense, sadness, happiness, and true love. It is a 5 STAR read for sure!!!! Thank you again Rachael Duncan for continuing to captivate us as readers with your all- consuming stories!!!!
3.5 Stars Calculated Risk by Rachael Duncan is a story of a woman letting go of the past and taking a chance on love. While this is a romance at heart, Duncan weaves in touches of mystery, suspense, and action as she tells the fairy tale romance of Marcus and Lydia.
In Calculated Risk you meet Lydia, an interior designer who is anything but ready to meet the man of her dreams. She’s skittish to a fault and resorts to fake engagement rings in order to keep the men at bay. There is nothing she won’t do to keep from falling in love. Marcus Riley knows what he wants and it’s Lydia. From the moment he met her, Lydia was all he could see and boy does he enjoy the chase!
One of my favorite things about this book was Marcus. There was no limit to the ways he intended to woo Lydia. He was sweet, charming, romantic to a fault. His charming, sometimes cheesy pickup lines were endearing and forced me to fall in love with him right along with Lydia. He is quite the book boyfriend to fall in love with.
With that being said, there were a few times in the story that I felt Duncan shifted her storyline. Without giving the story away I somehow totally didn’t see the suspense portion of this book coming. I thought we would have heard more from Lydia’s cheating ex fiance than where the story ended up. Although it was well written and kept me on the edge of my seat, I wasn’t as captured as I wanted to be. In the past, Duncan’s stories have kept me up all night with serious book hangovers. While Calculated Risk was a good story, I didn’t have that same tug in my gut to not walk away from it.
With that being said, I truly enjoyed reading Duncan’s newest book. Marcus is definitely one charming romantic book boyfriend that I fell in love with. If you are looking for a book with a little suspense, romance and wonderful banter then look no further than Rachael Duncan’s Calculated Risk. It’s worth the buy!
"Take the risk with me, Lydia. The biggest ones often lead to the best rewards."
I'd say take the risk on Calculated Risk, except it's not really a risk at all. Not when it's a book that can make you goofy smile, cover your mouth in shock, bite your lip in suspense and make you swoon for a sexy AF cop and his big, huge... heart.
Yes, heart. Marcus has a lot of it, and so does this book. Smartly written, with some interesting twists and a chemistry that captivates, Calculated Risk is practically drowning in feels.
"...I'll always love you through it."
It starts pretty funny—despite Lydia's heartbreak (or maybe because of it), it's easy to believe that Marcus would be smitten. And a smitten Marcus is creative and cute in his pursuit.
It ends beautifully—with a feeling that anything is possible, and that more is yet to come (Charlotte, oh, Charlotte). Plus, it left my heart on a high, which is the perfect way to end a book that grabbed my attention from the first page and ended up being a one-sitting read.
And the middle? Well, there's so much happening, but never too much for me. Marcus and Lydia have their ups and downs, but they were consistent if a little...out there, and even if I wished—really hard—for Lydia to have a little more trust and faith, I still wholeheartedly believed in them.
Mostly in Marcus. Hot, muscly, magnificent Marcus. So, if you're not game to take a risk on a book that's equal parts goofy, shocking, hot and happy, then take one on Officer Riley. It's worth it.
The risk was never being with him, it was being without him.
Lydia Kelley has been hurt deeply in the past and to keep men away she wears a ring. Little does she know that the night she goes out with friends she will meet the man who will eventually break down her walls.
Marcus Riley is the pick up line king, he is a sexy as heck police officer. When he see’s Lydia at the bar he is smitten. Of course Lydia freaks and runs, but Marcus is a very determined man.
This story is great, you will encounter just about every emotion and we find that they both have some things in their past that come back to haunt them. Can these two make it work?
I have to say that Rachael Duncan has really pulled me in with her writing and I couldn’t put it down until I was done. This story was great, I loved the connection and attraction these two had, you could feel it coming off the pages. I am emotionally exhausted. I plan to check out more books from Rachael Duncan. Thank you for a great read.

Marcus and Lydia have quite the story to tell. There were moments in this book when I was so caught up in the story, I could see it all playing out in my head. I loved the way Marcus loved Lydia and I hated the way she tried to fight it. I loved the way he wasn’t all Alpha dog about taking care of her, but he still totally cared for her.
There were some big surprises in the middle of the book that I didn’t see coming, but I thought they flowed right in and made the story. The connection that Ms Duncan created between Marcus & Lydia was easy to feel and cherish. There was no way for me not to totally fall in love with Marcus - he was funny, sexy, strong, loving, protective, and everything one wants in the perfect book boyfriend!
I think my favorite part of their courtship was his corny pick up lines and how he carried them thru their entire relationship. It was silly, but the perfect way to bring a little humor into the story when it was getting a little heavy!
This story was gripping. The drama was shocking. The love was fantastical. I love this author and this story didn’t disappoint at all for me. I loved the group of friends and am excited to read other books in this series.

This was a quick read that mixed some heavy emotions with some witty dialog.
Lydia is a guarded and not looking for anything, which is why she says she is married. She was burned in the past and refuses to let anyone else in. She is done with men and intends to keep it that way, even after one too many drinks and string a terrible pick-up lines.
Marcus has found the one...he just needs to make her see the same things he does, a feat all in of itself. An above average guy, with a great sense of humor he becomes the thorn in Lydia's side. But after months of trying, he might finally get a change for a date...maybe.
I absolutely enjoyed this book; it was light for the most part but there were some parts that were heavy on the feels. It was enjoyable and the pick-up lines made me giggle. There was some suspense mixed in which made things get exciting. The not knowing how things would work out kept me steadily reading. There were some parts that were a miss for me though and things that I didn't love as much as others. There was a great cast of other characters and while our stars were Lydia and Marcus there was enough from others that have me looking forward to more.
Calculated Risk by Rachel Duncan is the first book in the series and I CANNOT wait for more from this group of friends! This was a perfect read for me with a little bit of love, angst, heartbreak and suspense and I give it 4 stars and recommend it to others! I need Charlottes book like yesterday!!!
Lydia was burned by the one man she thought she would love forever so when she met Marcus at a club during a girls weekend away she has no intention of seeing him again, that is until he pulled her over for speeding. Marcus couldn't get the woman with the engagement ring out of his mind and something told him that the ring wasn't exactly representing a true engagement.
Marcus begins a relentless pursuit of Lydia that will have the reader giggling at his antics and also smiling at his persistence in trying to win a date with he. Once he finally does the relationship that begins between them is magical, that is until an ex resurfaces and brings insecurities to the surface that Lydia tried to forget about.
Can they make it past everything that stands in their way and find their happily ever after? You need to read to find out!
When I first started reading Calculated Risk I didn’t like Lydia very much. She had way too much angst going on for me and drove me a little crazy but, I ended up loving her and can definitely see why she is like she is. Now Marcus he is a different story. I think I loved his character from the very beginning of him saying to Lydia “You come here often” and Lydia asking him if that is the best line he could come up with? And believe me his come on lines just get worse from there. Ha Ha! I felt that Marcus was very nice and sweet. He is very sexy and romantic! I think that everyone needs a Marcus in their life! BTW I think I do but, that isn’t part of this review.
Lydia has some very good girlfriends Charlotte, Scarlett & Paige. It looks like Charlotte is up next for a book coming in early 2017. I am also hoping that we will hear more of Marcus’ brother Sean. He is just as bad as his brother Marcus is. Of course Marcus blames his pickup lines on his brother Sean.
I really enjoyed reading Calculated Risk and I give it 4.5 Stars. I can’t wait for Charlotte’s story!

Lydia had been hurt so badly by those she trusted more than anyone. So she closed herself off to men, it didn't matter who they were. So when she meets Marcus she feels the pull between them but is too afraid to risk being hurt again. Marcus will not give up though and through his cheesy pick up lines. He will use every trick he has to get what he wants most, Lydia, and to break down her walls. Will Lydia finally take a risk that may cost her everything?
WOW!!! What can I say about Rachael Duncan... I fell in love with her work when I read Hopeless Vows, now with Calculated Risk I think I have a girl crush on her. LOL. Her characters come alive and jump off the page. Her writing just flows so easily that you don't want to stop reading. I loved Lydia and Marcus so much, but I also fell in love with Charlotte and Paige. They are Lydia's friends and Marcus's brother Sean... SMH. He is so precocious. I loved him too. This is definitely a must read book. I would give it more than five stars if I was able. I cannot wait to see what Rachael has in store for her readers next. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!
This book introduced me to this author and I am delighted with her work. Lydia is a young interior designer who has been burnt in the personal relationship aspect of her life. She finds it hard to trust any male enough to go out with them. Marcus is a twenty-seven year old policeman in the same town and fights to get Lydia to give them a chance. His cheesy pick-up lines, determination and resilience are all needed in his quest to conquer Lydia's heart. The characters are easy to relate to and more than once I felt I could have either clapped them on the back or for some slapped them on the back-not so gently! I enjoyed this easy to read, fast paced story. It has some serious issues like adultery and parental relationships but also has a quirky tough of humour which makes the book so light and I always enjoy humour in the stories I read.
"Calculated Risk" by Rachael Duncan is the story of Marcus Riley and Lydia Kelley.
Lydia is an interior designer. She has hurts from her past that make it difficult for her to trust people especially men.
Marcus is such a likable guy. I fell for him from the beginning. Marcus is amazing.
Lydia and Marcus first meetings are just a taste of what is to come with their relationship. The chemistry between them was intense but is it enough for Lydia to take a chance on love? Will Marcus wait for Lydia to trust in him?
This is a hot and steamy romance but with so much more. The author incorporates suspense, mystery, and unexpected twists in this story that keeps the reader guessing. At times you will laugh and cry. A wonderful love story!
FYI, includes mature content. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Calculated Risk is the first book I have read by Rachael Duncan and I enjoyed it. It held my attention throughout the whole book.
Mystery, Secrets, Romance, Suspense. After a bad breakup Lydia doesn't want another relationship so she builds her wall up and wears a fake wedding ring. One night out with her friends and her life will forever change. Marcus is persistent with wanting to get to know Lydia. He can see past her "fake" ring and sees the pain in her eyes. He tries with his corny pickup lines and gets turned down by Lydia but fate finally intervenes. Things don't always go as planned, ex's make appearances and family who have resentment. Will the past stay in the past or will lurk in the shadows? Will Marcus and Lydia get a happily ever after?
4.5 Amazing Stars! Lydia has been burned by love and has sworn off anything to do with relationships. Marcus meets Lydia and once he does he knows she is someone he wants to get to know. Marcus purses Lydia and knows that he can eventually win her over. When something happens and Lydia's fear of having her heartbroken comes back to haunt her will their relationship survive or will her heart be broken again? The author writes a story full of suspense, heartbreak, love and angst that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from this author. I highly recommend that you read this book!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. This book was read and reviewed by Annamaria for Alpha Book Club.
This is the first time I have read any of this authors work, and my goodness, I was not disappointed, this will definitely not be the last. Lydia has sworn off relationships due to past experiences, so when she ends up on a night out the last thing she expects is the instant attraction to hot, sexy, Marcus. Marcus is determined to break down Lydia’s barriers and certainly goes to extremes to do so. Will he succeed, or will Lydia run? You really need to read this for yourself! This is a beautifully written storyline, which is emotional, hilarious, and a wonderful romance. I recommend this authors work for all readers, and I cannot wait to read more of her work. I voluntarily reviewed and ARC of this book!
Lydia has been burned before to the point that she wears a fake engagement ring when going out to fend off guys. When she meets Marcus, she's tempted to come clean but sticks to her plan only to run into him a few weeks later when he pulls her over for speeding. Marcus was intrigued by Lydia; married women are off limits but he suspects the truth and takes advantage of their second meeting (and his job as a police officer) to learn more about her.
I enjoyed watching Marcus pursue Lydia, and Lydia's attempts to resist, as she doesn't give up without a fight. Intelligent, sassy characters plus some plot twists I so did not see coming made this a fast, fun and flirty read. 4.5 stars
