Anh Do is a comedian, artist and also one of the highest selling Australian authors of all time, with total book sales approaching 3 million.
Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.
Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.
Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).
Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.
In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.
All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.
It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.
My 3-yr-old went to the zoo with her cousins this weekend. Her Aunty said she could have either a book or a toy from the merch shop and she picked a book, which you've gotta be proud of right?! Anyway, she picked the one about turd of course so here we are.
There's some clumsy diction and a verse that doesn't flow as well as it could with just a few minor alterations. Would've thought my daughter's humour would be right in the ball park too but she was mostly bored and, to be fair, it was about as funny as a floating dookie in a public swimming pool, so...
Laura Wood's illustrations are just "ok" which is a bloody crime considering the author, Anh Do, is an award-winning portrait artist! Would've thought he could whip something up real quick. Above all, you don't even find out what happens to all the crap! Very anti-climactic!
Unfortunately, but probably pretty fittingly, this book about poo was... You guessed it; a little bit shit!
We had a library copy with the CD missing but the text is lyrical enough not to matter. The only thing I thought was a shame was that it doesn't talk about what actually happens to the poo. Our zoo makes ZOO POO compost (in dried zoo animal shapes) and some places make recycled paper from the fibres in vegetarian poo (like the elephants); even a big pile of zoo poo with flowers growing out of it would have been nice as a conclusion.
Miss 3 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.
A book similar to "The Scoop on Animal Poop" for the younger set. Talks about the different kinds of poop and what can be done with it. Can be read as a read aloud if only read the simple sentence on the top. It does provide a paragraph of information on each page. Fun!
Funny rhyming text. Quirky old fashioned illustrations. Ahn Do is such a talent.... TV presenter, comedian, author of adult and children's books....plus majorly talented portrait artist.
Kids (and most men) love toilet humour. This has a lot. Loved it all the way to the last couple of pages. To me, the ending was a cop out.....but it is still worth 4 stars.
We went to the zoo this week and I have to say the experience changed a little after having read this book. I honestly had never wondered what they did with all he poo, but as I wandered round looking at the animals this time I did start to imagine all the things they might do.
'What Do They do with all the Poo from all the Animals at the Zoo?' by Anh Do is a rhyming children's picture book which goes about answering a question that I am not too sure that anyone really asks - I mean if you go to a zoo and see way too much animal poo which would lead you to ask this question, then the zoo probably isn't a humane one to visit.
Anyway with that aside, if I look at this book from a child's perspective, with humor in mind it actually works pretty well - albeit up until the conclusion. The book follows a families visit to a zoo, and each family member comes up with an answer to the question. I can imagine the punchlines to the verses delivering the 'eww's' and 'ahh's' that is intended - mixing animal poo and children's favorite foods would do it every time.
The book doesn't quite reach the mark of being a great book in my opinion as we never get a real answer or even a mildly humorous ending? What this does I guess is allows parents to fill in the blanks when they read it to their child or perhaps the child reader coming up with their own answer. I was told 'the monkey hides all the poo' - I was left saying that they most likely compost the poo, but not the meat eating animal poo's. Finishing the book with the monkey and seeing the illustrated child's face - was it hinting towards the monkey throwing the poo? We'll never know.
Such a fun book and great fun to sing along to, but does anyone else feel ticked off that they didn't have a satisfactory resolution? There could just be a page at the back explaining what actually does happen to all the poo. The ending implies that it's obvious, but it's not at all. Other than that, it's great for some big giggles and exaggeratedly disgusted faces, and the format is bright and colourful with lovely illustrations.
Rhyming, colourful and funny ... huge disappointment with the ending though! I can’t believe the editor approved this. There needs to be an answer to the question so kids actually know what happens to the pop at the zoo 🤦🏼♀️
We need the answer!! What do they do? (but I have to say, everything else except for the ending is perfect! Especially the song comes with this book, I really love it! and this is definitely the book that kids will love and enjoy! )
They do what with all the poo? Are you serious? Yuck! I’m never eating pizza again!
I can just see young kids absolutely going nuts when this book is read aloud in a classroom. It is so well set out that kids will be waiting to see what will happen next. On each page we get a ridiculous scenario of what they do with all that poo at the zoo.
So, let’s get the scoop. In case you’re wondering, they scoop it up with rakes and turn it into birthday cakes. And, they mix it with all kinds of material and turn it into kid’s breakfast cereal. YUCK! It’s true apparently. Well, okay not really, but there really is some awesome and funny suggestions in this book.
This is a well structured book with great rhythm, repetition and rhyme, particularly for reading aloud to young children. One of the great things about this book is the ending, which at first I thought was a little light on, until it made me, and I’m sure everyone who’s read it ask the question, “So what do they do with all that poo at the zoo?” Thereby making this book a great classroom discussion and learning objective.
