Somer Canon lives in Eastern PA with her husband, two sons, and three cats. She loves to read and write and although she is polyamorous when it comes to genres, horror always seems to be her favorite. Please feel free to contact her!
This short story packs a heck of a punch in just a few pages! Mischief is a definite treat for the Halloween season. There were a couple of scenes where I said to myself, 'Is she (she being author Somer Canon) actually going to go there?' She did. Horror ain't pretty, and this is some damn good horror.
I enjoyed this story quite a bit. It was direct and not overloaded with details that would have slowed it down. I’m always found of a story that makes say ‘Eww’ out load. There is a few brutal elements to it, one in particular I found hard but overall I liked this one.
A little confusing even knowing some of the darker tales of Samhain, but also it misses a lot of the spirit of it and the connection that the veil brings. Dark and twisted but also so fast paced it feels like there is something missing. The ending words didn’t feel right even as someone who doesn’t enjoy Christmas.
I liked that this book was short and I read it and probably 10 minutes. I did not like that, The entity was traveling from body to body that part was kind of confusing. and almost hurt a baby and then succeeded in murdering a dog. Not for me.
As a fan of Ms. Canon's novella, Vicki Beautiful (and if you haven't yet read it, what're you waiting for?), the author's found the perfect companion piece in the short, Mischief. Fast-paced, gruesome, morbidly humorous and sick, sick, SICK tale of a demon unleashing all sorts of violent and grotesque (what he calls) "mischief" onto an unsuspecting neighborhood by inhabiting their bodies one at a time. Told first person by the body-hopping demon, it's a perverse delight to get into his mind as he gleefully goes about his mission, causing terror and death, the only way he knows how to celebrate Halloween. And celebrate he does! I would've given it five stars, but, ahem, what Ms. Canon does to a poor neighborhood dog is beyond the call of duty of horror. If you like (very) dark and twisted humor stirred into your horror (I know I do!), give it a read.
After reading Somer Canon's first novella, the delightfully twisted Vicki Beautiful, deciding to pick this one up was a slam dunk. It's a short tale, something you can get through on a lunch break or whenever you've got a few spare moments, but it's well worth checking out, and had me giggling a bit as the entity paying homage to its master Samhain went about the business of doling out a few tricks and consuming everyone else's treats on Halloween night. Can't wait to see what comes next from Ms. Canon!
This was a very brutal short story about the nasty side of Halloween. It is not for the faint of heart. But, if you like gory stories, this will be perfect for you.
