An eccentric modern-day witch, accused of murder, must explore her past lives in order to keep her freedom -- and find her way back to magic.

No one appreciates the irony of her situation more than Raven Kane: she's a burnt-out witch.

Raven is a hip, hexing-and-texting sorceress - or at least, she used to be. Now her ancient timber house is falling down around her, and the bank wants to repossess it. Nothing would make her cantankerous neighbour happier than seeing Raven and her messy menagerie out on the street. To add to her stress, the reckless Wicked Witches are causing mischief and it's her job to reign them in. Worst of all is that her magic seems to be fading.

Just as everything seems to be too much to handle, there's a knock on the (splintering) door. A not-unattractive man appears in her life: not to save her, as a fairytale would have you believe, but to arrest her for the murder of one of her clients. It wouldn't be that bad for Raven, except that she knows she's guilty.

I was recommended this book by my book club #TBCONFB.

I had never read anything by this author before but I saw the cover photo and thought, although simple, it was intriguing. Plus the name and blurb and let's face it, who doesn't like a little bit of magic? Oh that's right, you pitchfork wielding Puritans. Or so it goes in the story.

So Raven Kane is a practicing witch in South Africa, she lives in her run down, close to collapsing, house with her menagerie of animals and her garden full of herbs and all things witchy.

When we are introduced to Raven she is laying in an ice bath trying to cool down from a searing heat and a blistered body. Why? We'll get to that.

Experiencing energy loss, trying to finish a book she started writing 15 years ago and trying to earn a living whilst helping others, she is nearly burnt out. Also on the verge of losing the house she loves and her beloved animals, she's stunned when she receives 8 million Rand from a client that's passed away. After paying her debts off and finally thinking things are better, she answers her front door. And finds Captain Krueger of the South African Police Department who tells her she's under suspicion of murder for the client that passed away.
As you can imagine, all manner of things happen, running away, breaking and entering, self defence, magic and a while chaos of things ensue.

If I'm being totally honest, I didn't love it. I did really like the story, the plot was great and the eccentric characters did make me laugh.

What I didn't love was the way it was written. It was written in the third person present and I really just couldn't get a feel for the story due to this. I'm so used to reading either the first or third person that it detracted from the story, for me anyway, I'm sure many other readers love reading in this style. However I'm not one of them so this is my issue and not the author but that's the reason it didn't fully work for me.

Great plot and great characters though.

Worth a read and I would definitely recommend it.

Happy Reading :-)

A great read
Plenty of wit, plenty of thrills and truly spellbinding (pardon the pun).
Thanks to TBC for again giving me the chance to read an excellent book from a genre I normally wouldn't have chosen.

I loved Raven Kane and her funny, witty uptake on life in general, the fact that she is a witch only adds to the story. She lives in and old house that her grandmother left her and it is in a state of collapse. The builder who does odd jobs for her wants and amount of money she can only wonder at for repairs then she finds out that she is about to be evicted too!. She is very worried about her animals and where will they live if it happens but that is the least of her worries as she finds herself accused of murder and the policeman is very good looking!. I really enjoyed my venture into a different genre and found myself very attached to some of the characters, I laughed and cried alongside them and would love to read more about them.

This is the first book by J.T Lawrence and it was amazing!

Gray Magic )O(
So Raven Kane, aspiring writer, burnt out witch, hippy, spells, murderess?
What a gripping story, Raven who is struggling on controlling her power, and financial situation. About to loose her grans house that is made out of wood and timber, She makes her living by selling spells online and other services. she burns up and cant figure out why, she is an old soul that has a lot of karma baggage but also who has not forgiven others or herself in passed life's, before she can heal she first needs to understand why and how this is happening to her. With some help from her high priestess.

Accused of murder by one of her clients son all because senior Bond left her money in his will (yes Raven cast out of desperation a money spell). this causes major problems for Raven, a mob who what to see her pay.
Danielle the sister to one of Ravens clients who she helped bring a beautiful baby into the world, turns out Danielle is also sleeping with her sisters husband and know he cant be the father of the baby.... even worse she is the leader of the mob outside Ravens house, she out to kill Raven...

suspense, drama...

Let me start out by saying I hope there is a book 2 and my question is, where can I sign up for book 2?

Loved this book. I found it to be a refreshing change, great pace, well written and easy to read. Loved the story and the characters! Enjoyed reading the book so much I actually read it in one day, couldn't put it down!

Raven is a modern witch beset by money problems and inner demons. Not only does casting a spell to help with her money woes come back to bite her but she also has to undertake a karmic journey to quieten her inner demons.

Raven is a complex character facing problems in the modern world but also being dragged down for events in the past. She is eccentric and does things her own way. Look forward to reading more! A book I would definitely recommend.

Grey magic has a lovely concept for a story. The characters are funny and likeable, but unfortunately for me, I found it jumped around a lot and you were expected to follow along and know details of characters that hadn’t been explained before. I found I had to concentrate far more in this book, than I have in many others of the same genre and occasionally the inner monologue became a little laborious, but that is just my opinion.

It was enjoyable and had a lovely sense of humour running throughout, but unlike others, I found I could put it down easily.

I really enjoyed this book. So much so, that I devoured this book in less than two hours. The author's gripping writing style and the M.C Raven's charming and witty personality had me hooked from the very first page. I am a lover of all things magical and supernatural but I would recommend this book to even the most cynic readers as it's such a refreshing, modern read. The characters are complex, flawed; and have real world problems and personalities. I highly recommend this book and will be checking out more books written by this author myself.

Really enjoyed this book! The writing was beautiful and I LOVED the MC, Raven. She was so relatable.

The magic and research behind it all was done well. I thought the authors sense of humour came shining through and I laughed actually out loud so many times.

I’m working through the rest of this authors books because I loved the writing style so much.

My only gripe would be it maybe was a bit of a slow start, but it definitely picks up the pace quickly and takes a turn near the end you don’t see coming at all.

I want more Raven! :)

This is my first JT Lawrence book and I must say I really enjoyed it.

It's a bit slow to start (for my liking) but once it does, oh boy! What a journey to the end of the book.

I'm quite sad that I've finished it, this book will stay with me for a while. I look forward to reading more from the author!

Following Raven a 21st century witch has been a pleasure and what a journey. The author has added amazing realistic stories about the trials and tribulations of Raven and how she interprets her magic to help her customers get their hearts desires whilst battling those who don't appreciate her special gift. A must read for anyone even if this is not your usual genre.

Raven Kane is an engaging modern day witch with her fair share of problems. I really enjoted the story & the writing. Even though this is a stand alone book, there is room for a sequel. I'd love to read it & visit with Raven again.

Grey Magic began its life as a short story that featured in JT Lawrence’s anthology ‘Sticky Fingers’. But, as things generally go with witches, they tend to weave a particular type of spell and before you know it, you’re writing a whole book all about them … just them!
And that’s exactly what happened with Raven Kane, the modern day witch that JT Lawrence’s ‘Grey Magic’ is all about. If you met Raven, you’d think she were just like you and me: same problems and challenges; not enough money, house needs fixing, no decent men to meet … except the one who knocks on your door to arrest you for murder! Ok, so maybe not quite like you and me!
Let’s back up just a little bit here. Yes, Raven Kane is a witch. But you wouldn’t know it to look at her – she doesn’t fly around on a broomstick wearing a pointy black hat. She’s actually worried that she might be losing her touch. She’s a bit worn out, you see, feeling like she might have a bit too much on her plate. Her beloved home is literally falling down around her and she doesn’t have the means to fix it (apparently it’s not the done thing to wave your wand and make it all better). She’s expected to control a group of badly behaved Wayward Witches, who are getting increasingly out of hand by the day (think of a rowdy bunch of #FeesMustFall demonstrators with magic spells and potions at their disposal). Her neighbour – a priest, of all things! – insists on driving her completely insane. Her sister refuses to speak to her because she’s brought her niece into the so-called freak-circle of magical craziness. And if all this weren’t bad enough, she’s a ‘person of interest’ in a murder case – a crime that she’s well aware she committed, by the way! (No spoilers – she immediately makes it very clear she killed the person in question!)
She sounds completely awful doesn’t she? She’s not. Raven Kane is lovely. She’s quirky, she’s confused, she’s befuddled, she’s tired, she’s trying her best, she’s caring, she’s friendly (to most beings), she’s affectionate, she’s herself, and you’ll instantly feel like she’s the type of person you’d want to become friends with. That’s how I feel. Raven Kane is extremely likeable.
Lawrence has created a character who’s just like you and me: she’s flawed, has to deal with financial struggles, family challenges, relationship issues, and career dilemmas a-plenty! The only difference being that the career’s a little unique: she’s a witch!
I loved the book! The intricacies of how Raven deals with her particular demons, by discovering how her karmic journey has had to play out were fascinating, and left me wondering (once again) about the exploration of past lives and cosmic relationships.
It’s a book for dreamers, and perhaps not for those who are more rooted in practicality – but even then, I would suggest giving this a try. We all need our own sprinkling of magic every now and then.

I finished this book the day I started it. It was fun with really likeable and believable characters. The protagonist, Raven, is all the more successful as a character (and as a witch) because of her very human flaws. I believe there are going to be more in the series and can't wait to get hold of them. Thanks, Janita!

I received this book for my honest opinion.

I enjoyed it so much, all the twists and forthcomings this one had.

Raven totally relatable character, I liked her a lot, she is a pretty cool heroine for this story and I liked that she isn't like all superpowered but just trying to do her best at things and learn something.

My favorite character without a doubt Eli, crazy little bird made my day everytime.

And Krueger was an interesting addition to the mix, I like him, let's us see where he will be going later on.

I did have some questions but maybe they will be resolved later? or maybe they are best buried where they are.

This is my third book by JT Lawrence and she has become one of my favorite, “will always read” authors. Everything about her writing appeals: interesting stories, characters that are real, a flowing style of writing that pulls me along the page and into the story.

Rather than providing a plot summary which other reviewers have done well, I’d rather concentrate on what I like.

Grey Magic started as a short story in the author’s Sticky Fingers collection. When I read the story I remember thinking that there is more than enough story here to expand it into a novel. Hurray for the author thinking the same thing.

Grey Magic is contemporary fantasy which I prefer to high fantasy. When approaching this style of fantasy, how the author builds her world is the first "make or break" factor that will tell me if I want to continue. I like what Lawrence has done in this regard. The setting is present day Johannesburg though that doesn't play into the story. Witchcraft is acknowledged as existing though not necessarily embraced by the general public (ie the pitchfork and pyre mob). witches have to be constantly aware of the potential that the simmering threat can come to a boil at any moment. Twitter, Facebook, Google Alerts, mobile phones, texting, and email are all needed by a modern witch to work her craft. Witches have conferences, PaganCon, a bureaucracy, and a young activist faction that publicize their actions on youtube. This is a world in which we would be comfortable.

I like the way magic is portrayed and I'd say the author put some real thought and research into how to present it in a way that meets the reader’s expectations without going over the top: "Real magic covers a wide spectrum encompassing good and evil and there are very many shades of grey in-between. The reason a spell can never be pure white is because of the cosmic baker's influence. A sorceress may start out with a clear, benevolent purpose, unalloyed ingredients and a pure heart and may perform the incantation as close to perfectly as she can manage, but after that she has little influence. Once it is out of her mouth the spell is out of her hands and cannot be kept un-grubby."

The protagonist, Raven Kane, styles herself as a "hip, multitasking, hexing-and-texting witch" though does come across as kind of ditzy at first impression: she won’t answer her phone, read her mail or email, a consequence of which is that she finds herself in dire financial straights, and she maintains an inner, and often humorous, dialog with her rational side. Adding to her problems is that she feels burned out, seems to be losing her power, and there is some deep underlying cause to her problems.

The early parts of Grey Magic are light and humorous but Lawrence isn't afraid to go dark. When we get to the root causes of Raven's issues, it gets dark indeed. And I’m not exaggerating when I say that the tension at the end was visceral.

Grey Magic is a very satisfying read. While I hate to curse an author with “Great, now I have to write a sequel”, this is a world that deserves another visit.

This book magically wiped out a day of my life (in a good way)

Ah I thoroughly enjoyed this. Completely absorbing storyline and a great way to pass a few hours on a rainy day. I really enjoyed the intertwining of fantasy and reality, technology and magic, present and past.

This is the third JT LAWRENCE that I have read. Pretty impressed with the variety of styles and genres that she writes in - this has to be my favorite so far (and I have enjoyed them all).

*I received a free copy in exchange for a fair review by NetGalley.*

The main character, Raven is a woman who earns her money by being just that, a witch, which I liked because it was refreshing. She is extremely quirky and by extension, interesting. But what I loved was the ending, and how it explained the whole book (I'm not going to make any spoilers, I'm nice like that).
The one bad thing I can say was that I didn't get much emotion from her, apart from tension from the plot. There was something about the main character that I didn't get.

This is a great fantasy book with a really peculiar witch with loads of problems at the same time, and who lives in a zoo (is the only thing I can think of to explain it). I really want to know if the author is planning on writing another one!

The Book

Raven is a burnt-out witch; her magic is not as strong as it used to be and as life’s realities start beating at her door it seems it’s fading more and more every day. As she battles to gain traction in a sea of seemingly endless problems, another one is about to send her over the edge entirely. How will she free herself from the strain, and convince the police that she isn’t guilty of a crime she knows she has committed?

My thoughts
I picked up Grey Magic with every intention to start reading it and to finish it immediately. The first chapter grabbed hold of me and sparked every bit of fascination, confirming it’d be a read I would enjoy. But then life swept me away and I found myself with a list of requested reviews. It’s strange because having finished Grey Magic, I feel I was only meant to read it now. Does that make sense? Like, had I read it when I first picked it up, it wouldn’t have made the sense that it does now to me?

What I liked
1. Raven is my kindred spirit character. I just adore her. I imagine her as this frantic and frazzled witch who underneath the organized chaos is grounded in her see-saw sanity. If I ever had to meet someone like Raven, I'd probably stalk them until they loved me. OK maybe not, but I'd consider it
2. Raven also happens to be desperately trying to write a book. And I have to admit, there's something about an author whose character is also an author that I enjoy. It's like a weird inception-ish thing or something that just really gets my imagination going
3. She has lots of pets. Lots. And one of my favourites had to be Eli the Parrot. No filter on his beak and so bizarre I may just need to get over my fear of birds, because I really want an Elie. Jesus Christ!
4. Raven’s past life regression therapy was absolutely devastating. It struck a chord in me that left my heart pounding and tears patiently waiting to be set free. I feel there is a definite testament here to JT Lawrence and her ability to completely alter the tone of her books as necessary. Not many have managed to do that successfully for me.
5. There is an internal dialogue that takes place between Raven and her ‘male self’. While there have been a few books I’ve read, which use this for their characters this is the first time it’s ever felt like it was well executed, it felt real and believable. (If I’m honest I felt like I finally had someone who understood me and Robert)
6. I am a firm believer in karma and I must say; JT Lawrence has, in Grey Magic, described it through Raven’s regression session in the most beautiful way. The way each past life impacted on the next one of Raven’s was something I’d never considered in that way.
7. Oh and finally, I loved how the concept of mob mentality is handled in this book – how it is demonstrated that all it takes is one convincing lie or statement to be made to have a crowd gather in unfounded hatred for an individual, even if said person was someone they relied on before. I don’t think there was an intention for the underlying messages of self-thought, but I took that for myself so thanks Janita 😊

What I disliked
1. I would say I’d have liked a bit more focus on the Wicked Witches, while their presence is pertinent and in fact essential for the overall plot and conclusion, I would have liked there to be a bit more finality surrounding their actions and goals.
2. And I would have liked a little more information on Stephen. There is a shell-shocking revelation which I feel could have been explored more; particularly because of the relationship between Raven and him, I don’t quite feel her approach to him is entirely justified had she known about it all along, or did I maybe miss something in the book which explained that?

This is by far my favourite book of 2017 so far. And I was thrilled to discover a week ago that this in fact the first book of a series so just imagine the happy dance I did!? Anyone who enjoys a witchy tale and is looking for a story with humour, a dash of mystery and a strong female protagonist - this is the book for you

Starts with a story where you get thrown into a situation where you're not sure what's happening, until you start feeling for the main character who doesn't seem to have her life together - and yet is so relatable. Then comes a whirlwind of circumstances that throws her life into a further spiral, wondering what is happening yet, and by the time you notice it, you're a hundred pages from the end!

A gripping story, simple language, captivating and relatable. Basically, this is a book you'll want to read if you like realistic fiction!

Grey Magic had me hooked from the very first chapter. Raven Kane is a modern day grey witch - which means she is not a bad witch or a good witch, but rather a witch in between - that has been accused of murder. But did she do it?

The book combines drama, comedy and an array of emotions into an action packed book that will have you wanting more (seriously, there is going to be a sequel, right?), while exploring modern magic and real life problems that a lot of us could probably relate to - or at least I can.

All of the characters are fantastic - especially Raven - and play essential roles throughout the book that bring the whole story to life.

JT Lawrence is one of my absolute fave local authors, with every book I have read of hers being one I simply could not put down until I read just one more page. a fantastic book from the get-go, I would recommend Grey Magic to anyone looking for a magical read.

They say no good deed goes unpunished - and that is indeed the story of Raven Kane's life. Of course, it doesn't help that she's a witch.

Set in vibrant Johannesburg, South Africa, Raven's complicated life and relationships start to unravel when she is accused of murder, and the extremists would happily watch her burn at the stake, if that was still a thing. And to top it all off, she has money problems. There is only one way to dig herself out of the mess she's in, she needs to get to the bottom of who is was - in order to stand her ground for who she is.

If you love a complex, messy but strong heroine, then Raven Kane's story is just for you.

Wow, where to start? The description sounded like something I would really like, and boy was I right!! The beginning few chapters were pretty cheesy and I almost gave it up, but I dug in and truly loved what I read after that. Raven is truly relatable, her thoughts and experiences are similar to what anyone would have, of course minus the magic! The writing was top notch, the story flowed beautifully after the first few chapters, and it sucks you in, and makes you really think about human nature. I absolutely loved it and have already downloaded another book by this author!

Let me start by saying I loved this book and would recommend it to all of my friends. The story is about a plucky protagonist/witch, Raven Kane. When you start reading this book, it has a bit of a cozy mystery feel, airy and light reading. However, it then takes a dark turn and murder and mayhem abound. When Raven examines her past lives, we also get an interesting lesson in both karma and forgiveness. This was overall a very entertaining read.
The only downfall, if there was one, is that there were some story lines I would have liked further developed including Raven’s relationship with her niece as well as her relationship with a rebellious coven. I hope this is the first of a series as I feel Raven has so much more to say!

What started as a tickler of a short story in the Sticky Fingers collection is now a full novel in its own right. The story of Raven Kane, the hip, hexting-and-texting sorceress in the modern day world of social media stampedes into your imagination. The book is incredibly readable and I found connecting with the characters natural. The trials Raven faces include possible magical burnout, a murder investigation a pesky coven up to mischief. There is plenty of entertainment as the story develops, even the villains of the story have fair chances at the spotlight, which makes this something I'd happily hand to a young adult reader too. I thoroughly enjoyed Grey Magic and it is definitely jostling for top spot on my JT Lawrence favourites list.
