City Limits #2

Sunshine and Rain

Rate this book
Some things never changed: when it rained too much it was bound to flood, work on our farm was never done, and no woman alive compared to Sunny Wilbanks. She wasn't just the town sweetheart with hair like the sun and a golden voice that drove me crazy. She was also the older woman who'd never seen me as anything more than a scrawny, lovesick kid.

Then again, some things were never meant to stay the same. Because after college, I wasn't how she remembered, and the older I got the more I enjoyed women chasing me.

Turned out it was easy to forget about the rain when I was tangled up with pure sunshine, and there was no place I would have rather been. I just had to convince her I’d known what I was doing all along.

Sunshine and Rain is the second standalone novel in the City Limits series. It follows new characters as they navigate their May-December-ish, second chance romance. Welcome to Wynne.

I simply adored the backstory about how the hero as a seventh-grade boy had such a massive crush on the heroine a cheerleader/high school senior. The five-year age difference as children was too great for Sunny Wilbanks to have taken sweet Rhett Caraway and his grand gestures seriously.

”Gross! He was in seventh grade. I was a senior. Come on, dude. That’s not cool.”

description

In the present, Sunny Wilbanks is surrounded by all her friends settling down while she’s still trying to find Mr. Right. When Rhett Caraway now a HOT twenty-three year old man returns home from college our Sunny’s head sure does spin at the sight of him!

description

Rhett Caraway is an amazing hero and I’m placing him on my Book Boyfriend Shelf here on Goodreads. He was swoonworthy, stoic, sensitive, and very sexy. His childhood crush and the protection he had up when Sunny approaches are superbly written. He’s simply WONDERFUL!

”Just as I blinked and worked up the gumption to do it, he said, “Fuck it,” and lifted me up with his free arm. His mouth yet to touch mine, we were eye to eye. Hazel to blue. “You can kiss me first tomorrow, Sunny. I cannot wait any damn longer.”

description

Sunny’s obsession with their age difference though five years is nothing as they are now both in their twenties drove me crazy. She mentions the age difference and a term for herself “panther” way too much.

description

There are so many scenes and quotes that I adored in this story and though Sunny may drive a reader nuts with her thinking there’s someone more suitable for Rhett or that he hasn’t been around enough. This story was a good read that left a huge smile on my face the unrequited love of their past and the hard fall in the present was simply SPOT ON!

Ten years ago a 13 year old boy thought he was in love. He followed the 18 year old cheerleader around, bought her gifts and declared his love. When it was time for her to go to college, she let him down easy and told him one day he’d find the one he was meant to be with. Now, that 13 year old boy is a man and he’s come back to town. He’s not the same boy and she’s not the same girl. Now they’re adults. Were they always meant to be?

Rhett was an amazing hero. He was very mature for 23. He thought he had loved Sunny his whole life.
“I know everyone thinks I’m crazy, but I don’t care. I’m in love with Sunny. And someday, I’m going to build her a huge farm and I’m going to marry her and make her smile every day.”~13 year old Rhett

But he soon realizes his 13 year old love is not the same as when you are an adult.
“As a kid, I thought she was pretty— and she was. But as a man, seeing the woman she’d become, I realized I’d been wrong all along. She was gorgeous.”

“Here I’d been infatuated with this girl my whole life, and I was quickly learning that maybe I’d been focusing on all the wrong parts of her.”

I love how he decided he was going to treat her the way a MAN should and show her he was not just some kid home from college.
“I’d show her what it was like to be treated the right way by a man who respected her body, her mind, and her heart.”

Sunny was a sweet, kind and funny heroine. I really liked her for the most part. She struggled in the beginning with seeing Rhett as an adult and not a middle schooler. But she begins to realize, maybe he was just who she had been looking for all along. He just needed to grow up.
“He wasn’t just the kind of guy I wanted in my future, he was becoming the exact one. The only one I could see there.”

While I enjoyed this book, it wasn’t a 5 star read for me. Why? One thing was I got tired of Sunny constantly thinking she was old. Twenty-eight is NOT old.
“It was confirmed: I was an old maid who’d lost her allure. A green penny left out in the rain for too long. Washed up. I was in a funk.”

Another thing was she constantly thought she was too old for Rhett. Again, 5 years is not that big of a deal when you’re adults. And lastly, I grew tired of the back and forth between the two. I LOVE alpha heroes who take charge and go after their women. While Rhett was delicious and definitely alpha, I would have liked to see him push her a little more and well, just take what was his.
“I’ve always been yours. It’s about time you caught up.”~Rhett

Overall, though the positive outweighed the negative. It was a sweet slow-burn of two people who the universe had plans for all along.
“I was proud to be with her. I’d never been more proud of anything else in my life, I was certain. No first place finish. No sense of accomplishment had ever compared to how it felt every time she asked me for a kiss.”~Rhett

“He was everything I’d ever really wanted in a man. Equal parts responsible and reckless. Smart and sexy. A good man. The best. He was all mine.”~Sunny

After finding Book 1 so boring, I hesitated to start this one but wanting to read this book was my reason to start this series so I still decided to give it a chance. I am so glad I did. I loved this book.

This is a heart-warming story of love. It is a cute and yummy romance. I loved both characters but the hero Rhett shines. He is awesome. Just perfect.

The writing made me feel their love. It made me feel everything. I was invested in their love story from the very beginning and it never changed till the end.

*********************************************

The good and the bad

The book was nearly perfect for me with few faults. It was emotional and sweet. I felt their chemistry and the slow build-up of the sexual tension was perfect. If only the writer had given us the perfect love-making scenes, the book would have been 5 star-worthy for me but alas, she cut them all short and made a few summary sentences only. Every time, they made love, it was a few vague sentences. It was like a cold shower after all that incredible sexual tension and perfect chemistry. I was so disappointed.

Still, I loved the couple and their story so much that I went on reading it and ended up loving the book.

However, if the writer doesn’t want to target 13-18 year-old readers only but also include the adult readers into her followers, she had better learn how to write those scenes! That was the biggest flaw in the book. She prepared us for a magnificent combustion and then pfft, it was nothing!

*********************************************

I also have another complaint about the book. I love it when writers make the hero a bit younger than the heroine but I get frustrated when the heroine starts to call herself a cougar or a panther, as in this book. He is 23, she is 28; so what the f*ck? And she repeats it so many times as if she was 50 and he was 20. Come on, with a 5-year age difference, what panther for God’s sake?!

*********************************************

So apart from these two flaws, the book is a beautiful love story and I still recommend it to all sweet romance lovers.

*********************************************

THE PLOT:

Rhett had a big crush on Sunny when he was a teenager. He was obsessive about her when he was 13 years old. However, Sunny was 18 years old then and naturally, she saw him as a kid, only. He made every cute move possible to make her see that he loved her but she never reciprocated his feelings. How could she? He was a kid back then! However, she was never rude or angry; on the contrary, she was always sweet while telling him that it was impossible.

“A long time ago I told a girl I loved her, and she told me she knew, but couldn’t love me back.”

Then, Sunny left their small town and went to college. He had to suck it up and go on living his life but she always remained as his dream girl.

Now, Rhett finished college and came back to their home town. He is a 23-year old adult now. And Sunny is 28.

When Sunny meets him so many years later, she is shocked to see him all grown-up and she finds him incredibly hot. However, he is cold and distant now. He is no longer the boy who followed her everywhere, begging for her attention.

Sunny is disappointed that Rhett doesn’t show any interest in her. On the other hand, Rhett has been the joke of the town for a long time because of all the things he did to show his love for her; so now he doesn’t want the history to repeat itself and as she said she would never love him back then, he has no hope whatsoever. That’s why, he tries to stay away.

*********************************************

I never like a book where the heroine chases the guy but although Sunny has to take the first step here, it didn’t feel wrong - on the contrary, it felt right because Rhett made so many efforts years ago and he was wounded by her rejection. Of course, she would reject him back then. What sane 18-year-old girl would want a 13-year old boy? But nevertheless, his ego was wounded.

Yes, Sunny takes the first steps and makes it clear that she is interested in getting to know him now but as soon as he understands she wants to hang out with him, he shows that he still wants her, too. He never rejects her. He is just scared to hope, that's all. He just waits for a few steps from her to make sure that he doesn’t make a fool of himself once again. And when he sees that she is attracted to him now, he is incredibly happy and then he shows what an awesome boyfriend he could be.

I loved Rhett and Sunny as a couple. I loved how he always wanted her above everyone else and it never changed and how she now healed his wounded ego and showed him that she now has caught up and finally feels the same.

Yummy romance, as I said 😉

*********************************************

Safety

She dated other guys and he dated other girls until he was 23 and she was 28. Neither of them fell in love, though.

When they meet again years later and start to hang out, there is no one else.

*********************************************

QUOTES from the book

In the safety of his arms, I was bold and I admitted, “I wanted to kiss you last night and all day today.”

He ran his fingers over my hair as I pulled back to look at him, my confession making my cheeks flush hot. “I’ve wanted to kiss you my whole damn life. I win.”

***

“I had it bad for you when I was a kid…
Now I want to get to know you better.
To me, it’s like you stopped aging and I just caught up. That’s how I see it.”

***

My whole life I’d wanted her to see me as someone stronger or older or more capable, even as a kid I’d wished I was taller so she’d look at me differently. Over the past few weeks, I’d seen her do just that and it was doing something to my ego. Not in a shitty, arrogant way, it was more like validation. An evening of the playing field. At the same time, I was seeing her in a different light, too. I supposed that was only natural. We were both adults now.

***

I hadn’t been in many relationships, so I hoped there was a learning curve that wasn’t too noticeable from her end, but seeing her in her bed, sleeping, I had a potent desire to either be the man she deserved or become him.

***

“You’re all mine. … Finally.”
“And you can be mine, too.”
“I’ve always been yours. It’s about time you caught up.”

Light, funny, drama-free, safe (for me).

Very unusual setting:
he had a crush on her for years and since he was younger (only 5 years), she didn't pay much attention to him. Yes, you read it right: he had a crush on her and she was unaffected *lol* How awesome is that?

I like books with older heroines. And in this case the hero was more mature than her, so it didn't bother me at all.

And I never doubted why the h didn’t love him back in the past – she was 18 and her was 13. Common!

At first I wasn’t a big fan of the hero. Some of his thoughts about his past women (he wasn’t a virgin and it was ok!!!) were quite ‘at-my-limit-of-patience’, but then he stopped to be a drama-queen and I liked his character a lot: he was strong, but vulnerable; he was sweet, but tough; and he loved her without any doubt!!!

Well, after the heroine told me repeatedly she was ancient at 28, I took extra time and examined myself in a mirror. If she were ancient at 28, does it make me to a mummy at 36? *lol*

Actually, heroine’s self-doubts and the fact, that she chased him a bit, didn't sit well with me. But, apart from the panther-comment and their ‘fight’ at their friends’ barbecue party, it was played nice.
She wasn’t my typical favorite strong badass, but she was ok, really ok (and not a doormat)!

Overall the book has a good message: the hero treated his woman always with respect, and it’s not a common fact in romance novels, unfortunately.

My favorite in this series!

P.S. About my extra time in front of the mirror: I look extremely good! Gotta love myself!

The first thing you should probably know is that there’s not a lot of angst here. If you’re looking for something to twist your heart up and shake it around until you don’t even know what you’re feeling anymore – turn yourself around and go pick up Bait. You won’t find that kind of gut-wrenching angst here.

Instead you’ll find a sweet slow burn that just gets brighter and hotter as the book goes on. An adorable – no, I mean adorable back story that may cause you to grin unabashedly like a crazy person at your Kindle because my God – has there ever been anything more cute and sweet and feelsy? You’ll find flirty, light-hearted banter and some sizzling heat. There’s just enough conflict to tug at your heartstrings, but nothing that ever takes away from the “feel-good” vibe that this book has from start to finish.

God.

I loved every minute of it. EVERY. MINUTE.

I needed this book. I needed something to fill my heart. I needed Rhett Caraway in my life. You guys? He’s the best. The BEST. From the moment he showed up in this book, I was completely smitten and my heart is still recovering from all the things he did to it. Good things. Happy things. Sensual things. GAH! He was just perfect!

And Sunny? Okay, so occasionally I found myself rolling my eyes at her inner turmoil – but I also got it. It’s not so much about who she is, but where she lives that causes her to be the way she is. And make no mistake – the way she is? Is still pretty fantastic. She’s adorable and funny and just quirky enough to have stolen the tiny piece of my heart that Rhett didn’t get his claws into.

These two were just fun. And heartfelt. And – seriously so hot in this lazy, scintillating, molten-like way that I attribute entirely to the lack of angst. Because there was no high drama, I got to luxuriate in the glow of all these sexy swoony feelings and – man, I didn’t want to let go. I could have lived in this book forever, soaking up that small town charm and staying lost in the magic that was Rhett fucking Caraway.

Did I mention that I loved this book?

Loved it.

Over the moon for it.

oh my heavenly hero .. what sweet sexy creative juices must've helped this author when she gave life to Rhett . What an adorable , sweet sexy man. What started out as a one sided crush in his childhood later became the love story that we all hope for. While this doesn't fit our safety standards of nobody after meeting ,you absolutely can not blame either character because he was 13 and she was 18. She left him after patiently guiding him to move on. She felt absolutely zero romantic feelings for him because face it that would have been gross at his age. Fast forward ten years and oh sexy Rhett is all man.
Just one kiss that took its sweet time was more erotic than a lot of sexy books out there. The build up of a decade. The want on each part. Oh my. This couple stole my heart .

I'm so in love with this absolutely endearing small town and its larger than life characters. The low angst and the loyal love is so heartwarming. Fan for life .. can't wait for more. Maybe Aaron or Dean ..but please write more soon.

Absolutely marvelous! This story will lift your spirits with a positive mood-boosting package of humor, wit and love. Once I started reading, I devoured this story in one sitting. From a new-to-me-author, I was hooked and immediately started searching out more of M. Mabie’s work.

Fresh and authentic, this author knows just how to show readers a really good time. Mabie packs this dilly with intelligence, wit, and an addictive romance into one fantastic read! I loved the bold characters, the slow-building yet steamy romance, and so many feel-goods that I lost myself in a happy place. If you’re a fan of small town romances, an absolute feast awaits you on each tantalizing page.

Welcome to Wynne! Grab your favorite drink, settle into your comfy chair while Sunny Wilbanks and Rhett Caraway take you on a trip down memory lane. It’s a story about a thirteen-year old boy who had his heart stolen by an eighteen-year old high school cheerleader years ago, and the memories that have refused to be forgotten.

Cougar Alert! Sunny continually refers to herself as a “panther” – does that mean she’s a fake “cougar” or what the heck? Me thinks she worries too much about a five-year age difference. Okay, so maybe her number is tiny bit bigger – 28 -- and his is only 23. But, so what? Both are young and only in their twenties and neither have ever been married or had children. Isn’t there an old saying that goes something like this -- “Age is just a number.” Come on Sunny – open your eyes! This guy is a forever kinda guy – and he definitely has his eyes set on you for his happily-ever-after.

Every second of this read is delectably delicious with humor and a little twist of an older woman-younger man relationship. Yea, yea, it’s a theme that has long been taboo, heavily influenced by the Freudian notion that the older women are mother substitutes or “cradle robbers.” But our hero doesn’t see it that way. He’s been in love with this “older” woman most of his life. And he isn’t easily deterred. Gotta love a guy who knows what he wants and goes for it – and in the most creative and delightful ways possible. Rhett rules in the romance category!

From Rhett at age thirteen –

I know everyone thinks I’m crazy, but I don’t care. I’m in love with Sunny. And someday, I’m going to build her a huge farm and I’m going to marry her and make her smile every day.

Rhett heads upward to topping my list of favorite heroes. He’s quite a guy. A long-distance runner and a farmer with a college education, loyal, and a hero that oozes wicked charm and sex appeal stealing your heart the moment you first meet him.

From Sunny at age twenty-eight –

He wasn’t just the kind of guy I wanted in my future, he was becoming the exact one. The only one I could see there.

Sunny could be a little cray-cray at times – but of the good variety. She’s adorably cute and kind with a quirky sense of humor and is a hard worker. She made for an ideal heroine.

They may be five years apart in age, but it really didn’t matter because they are an imperfectly perfect match!

Now that I’ve found this new-to-me author, who I think is a whizbang writer, I'd like to pay it forward. Here are just a few of the reasons why I think you should be reading her books, too. Amazing writing skills that include – imagination, creativity and characterization. Need I say more?

Okay, here’s a little extra. The characters were amazing, delightful, positive and kind and gentle and full of down-home goodness. A burst of sunshine even in the rain! Plus, there’s just enough angst combined with charm, steam and fun to keep me interested and devoted. They had me smiling from start to finish!

A super-duper treat – so good you’ll want a repeat!

Written on the town of Wynne’s water tower present day –

Sunny loves Rhett.

cute, lighthearted and sweet. every now and then you need one of these romances. i loved the first book and i am so glad this was just as good. loved the premise of this story. ever since rhett was 13 years old he has held a special kind of love for sunny wilbanks but with a 5 year age difference it just didn't happen for him. he gave her gifts, sent her flowers, wrote his feelings on the town water tower but she went off to college and he had to go on with his life. it was actually real sweet. cue 10 years later and 23 year old rhett returns home to wynne and when he bumps into sunny out and about, she's just as beautiful and sweet as he's always thought. when sunny see's rhett and the man he's grown into, cue the reader swoon.

i liked the small town feel of this story. i adored the way rhett treated sunny. the only thing i would have liked to see less of is sunny's constant reminders of how she's too old and he's too young for her. i get this was her hang up but it was annoying after a few times as it was only 5 years. 28 is not old or spinstery.. well not in my neck of the woods. regardless this series is a fun one, it's romantic and humorous but still brings the sexy too.

quick read with no angst or heavyness in sight. perfect weekend book. i hope to see the series continue on.

If you love small town romance novels you don’t want to miss this one. Once again, this author made me fell in love with the small town and these fantastic characters from the very beginning. “Sunshine and Rain” was another wonderful read by M. Mabie and a great addition to this series. Like the previous installment in the series, this second installment was sweet, fun, swoony and low in angst and drama and overall a pretty gipping feel good story.

“I wanted to feel that rush of excitement when I met The One. The One who’d make me forget there were only 3,400 people in my life because I was the most important one—to him. I wanted my love life to be something extraordinary.”

Sunny is a twenty-eight years old woman who had lived in the small town of Wynne all her life. Like all her friends who are paired off or married, she wants to find someone who loves her and settle down, but in a small town is not that easy to find someone decent.

“As a kid, I thought she was pretty—and she was. But as a man, seeing the woman she’d become, I realized I’d been wrong all along. She was gorgeous.”

Rhett used to be in love with Sunny…when he was 13 years old. He used to fallow her like a puppy, send her flowers, writing her love notes and declaring his love in all kind of ways. The only problem was that Sunny was older than him…five years older. Everything changed for Rhett back then when Sunny went off to college. Ten years later, Rhett return home to Wynne only to find out Sunny is as gorgeous and funny as ever and most of all, single. All he wants now is to show Sunny that he’s not a boy anymore, that he’s a man, a man who has no desire to be turned down anymore by anyone.

“There was something different, something new behind it, though. It wasnt only kindness, the kind she’d always shown me. Not anymore. There was chemistry. Curiosity. Attraction. And it was coming from her.”

Sunny can’t believe that handsome, young man who seems so indifferent to her is Rhett, the boy who used to fallow her everywhere. The “new” Rhett is gorgeous with a body to die for and all she wants to do is to lick him from head to toe.

“He wasn’t just the kind of guy I wanted in my future, he was becoming the exact one. The only one I could see there.”

After reading and enjoying the first installment in the series, my expectations for this one were really high. I’m happy to say “Sunshine and Rain” was simply awesome, well written and like any other good small town romance it gave me all the feels. I really enjoyed the storyline and how everything between these two characters progressed. Their slow burn relationship was well done, the two main characters’ background well developed, the romance aspect making me smile and swoon many times as the story unfolded.

I liked the two main characters together, but also individually. Sunny was a fun, relatable heroine I really enjoyed…for the most part. Her constant reminders of how she’s five years older than Rhett got on my nerves one time or two, but overall I found her character to be pretty endearing and well portrayed. Rhett stole the show for me here. He was a wonderful hero I simply loved. If you like sweet, thoughtful, caring heroes, then you will totally love Rhett. He was really amazing with Sunny and the way he treated her and cherished her were really heartwarming.

“I couldn’t do better than Sunny Wilbanks. There was no better. She was it.”

Overall, this was a fantastic read that made me smile and swoon until the end with a lovely romance, two engaging main characters and just a little bit of angst and drama.

I hadn’t realised the H was so much younger than the h – this is not normally my thing as I genuinely believe (on the whole) guys mature slower than girls. But aside from the 5 year age difference I DNF'd because I just couldn't get into the story

Sounds like a fabulous book, I’d suggest giving it a go, but I’m sitting this one out!

Self note:

I can look past hero’s hookups, but I usually draw a line at women doing chasing, specially when they’re insecure.

I’ll go sit on the corner of shame for such anti feminist thoughts.

Favorite Quotes:

New hot men in Wynne were like Halley's Comet: they only came around once in a lifetime.

I didn't want to be the old chick at the bar, dammit. I looked around, and I wasn't the oldest, by far, but I was one of only two women around my age who were there and single. BethAnne didn't count though because she was a ho.

Earlier that night, he'd told me my dancing looked like a frog on a hot sidewalk. Then he'd told me he was running home to poop - but he'd be back. We were definitely just friends.

It wasn't fair to other men how attractive he was. An image of him shirtless, mowing my yard, came to mind. I chalked it up to early onset panther syndrome and bent over at the hip to catch a breath that rushed through me, the image having left me winded.

She obviously didn't know what she was talking about. A man's grill is an extension of himself. There's a bond there. I swear it... 'Mine isn't just any grill Sunny. It's The Grill. I can't just be flinging my meat around on any old burner.'

After the lawn chairs were unfolded and the card table was set up, the yard was almost redneck romantic.

My Review:

I treasured and adored every page of this refreshingly original, fun, and delightful book. I was in dire need of a sweet and drama-llama free read and I must say I was shocked beyond belief to find just that from M. Mabie. This was not at all what I expected from her given the constant angst, conflict, and tension found in her Wake series - although I also loved those books to pieces. But I was beguiled, enchanted, and fell into a total swoon over Rhett and Sunny. I often laughed aloud, barked, and chortled as I read. Rhett was THE perfect BBF, his patience, the care he took, and the thoughtfulness and creativeness of his efforts to please Sunny were so sweet and tender that it stung my eyes. I relished the tenderness and sweetness of their love story, the irreverent humor, snappy banter, and slyly clever observations and insights. The writing was crisp, humorous, and unfailingly engaging. Ms. Mabie's characters were just adorable, well fleshed out, endearing, amusing, and lovable. I hated to leave Wynne but hope and pray Ms. Mabie extends a return invitation soon. I will save her some time and just RSVP right now. I'm thoughtful like that...

This is book 2 in this City Limits series. Started first with Roots and Wings and now we have Sunshine and Rain. In this story, we have Sunny and Rhett. They knew each other we find out before this story even begin. They have some serious history We find out their history as the author sprinkles their back story out throughout the book. I was hooked immediately from the beginning for their story was intriguing and emotional.
Rhett fell in love with Sunny way back in middle school but she was a bit older ( he was in 7th grade 13 yo to her18 yo senior in HS) and she told him it just wouldn't work. Now he is back in Wynne after he finished College and Sunny is wondering “what if” they had. Despite the huge age gap, There is this huge attraction and the chemistry between them is intense and it is illicit. Whenever they are around each other, they feel this strong pull toward each other. Their story is told from alternating POV's and we get to see how they are feeling, what they are thinking which is fantastic. Also, we meet some terrific secondary characters who add depth and humor to this story. Also we get to catch up with previous characters from book 1. Do Sunny and Rhett end up together? I do not want to spoil anything but I have to say, this was one lovely and beautiful story told with some fantastic and intense hot scenes which added to the touching scenes written by the author. Rhett is a great alpha male –he has loved this one woman for a long time and when he finally has the chance, then there are other issues that come his way. Then we have Sunny-she is a sassy and sexy woman who is wondering what she is doing. Her humorous look at life and love make this a fantastic and realistic love story. M Mabrie has done it again with her phenomenal hit.

My rating: 4.7 stars ****

Rhett Caraway has been in love with Sunny Wilbanks since he was a boy....the only problem being that Sunny is five years older than Rhett. Rhett has returned to Wynne after finishing college and is working on his family farm, which is right where he wants to be. He has no intentions of going after Sunny, having been let down by her many times (albeit gently, and due to their age gap). Sunny last saw Rhett nearly ten years ago, when she left for college (and when he left for college). At first she doesn't recognize the insanely handsome, rugged man that Rhett has become.....and she feels a bit pervy about being attracted to him considering their history.

After getting to know Rhett as the man he's become, Sunny is quite intrigued with him. She slowly comes to realize that she doesn't care what everyone in town thinks about and decides that she's interested in pursuing things with him. It takes a bit to convince Rhett that he's not imagining Sunny's interest in him....but he's on board as soon as he realizes all his hopes and dreams are finally coming to fruition. Although they have some minor issues to conquer, they are easily handled. I liked Sunny's big gesture to Rhett towards the end and it brought their story full-circle.

This is definitely a light and easy romance and I quite enjoyed it. I will continue to read this series as it becomes available.

"Sunny loves Rhett"

This one was so sweet! It's nice to read a book that isn't full of drama, angsty or crazy people. One of the things I really liked about the story is the age gap between Rett and Sunny. Sunny is older by 5 years and you typically don't see too many books this way.

Rett has had a mad crush on Sunny pretty much his whole life so 10 years later, when they start hanging out, it was cute seeing him get all giddy that it was finally happening. I wanted to high 5 him and say attached boy! The only thing that drove me a wee bit stabby was Sunny bringing up how much older she was than Rett. Throughout most of the book, she couldn't let the age thing go. She kept calling her self old and I'm all, you're 28, not 108!! Simmer down, girlfriend.

But once everything started to unfold and they were learning more about each other as adults instead of kids, it was just so super sweet. Rett is so damn patient and loveable, you can't help but have a big ole smile for those two!

It was a nice read without any drama and angst. As much as I adored and enjoyed Rhett I had some problems connecting with Sunny. She was my age, and I also whine that "I'm old as dirt", and as funny as it was at the begining, it stopped when she mentioned it every 5 minutes. At a halfway point I just rolled my eyes - that was the most annoying thing of hers. And I tried to understand her poin of view I just couldn't connect with her. I swooned for Rhett tho, and he kept this story on an ok level for me.

It was a really sweet story, and if anyone is in need of no drama, sweet guy read here you'll find it.

OH MMM GEEEEE! I am just giddy after reading this feel good book. I loved how there was no major drama or conflict. It was just two people getting to know each other and their stories. These are some of my most favorite characters EVER. They have taken up a place in my heart and I love it. M continues to blow me away with her words. Another great read!

The heroine couldn't stop talking/thinking about how SUPER OLD she was. Yeah, she was 28. Waaay too immature for me to really get into the story...
However, the hero was great.

There are so many things I know to be true in life, and at the top of that list is the fact that M. Mabie writes one helluva good book. The all-feeling stories and unforgettable characters she has so brilliantly created and captured represent some of my all-time favorites. This author’s talent knows no bounds in my personal opinion, and getting to feel and experience and live the mesmerizing words she creates in each and every one of her books is something I love and look forward to with everything that I have.

Every time I sit down to read a new book from M. Mabie I know that I am about to be blown away by what she has in store for me, and let me tell you, Sunshine and Rain was no different.

I honestly don’t think there are enough words in the world to describe how much I loved this book, how good it felt to read it, or how amazing and wonderful Sunny and Rhett were to fall in love with.

This book was sweet and swoony through every single page. It was refreshing and real and so beyond heart melting too. It was a story and a book and a world that just felt so darn good to be in, and falling in love with Sunny and Rhett and their literal amazingness is something I won’t soon forget.

Sunshine and Rain was the epitome of a feel good romance that sweeps you up into its literal magic with everything that it has, touches your heart, melts it a whole helluva lot too, and has you feeling and experiencing every ounce of that magic all the way through.

From the very first page of this book I was beyond enamored with the authentic, inviting, and charm filled world that M. Mabie so fantastically creates in this book. Sunshine and Rain thrusts you right back into the world of Wynne, population 3402, and it has you loving every second that you get in that place with its cast of characters that make you feel right at home. M. Mabie does such a phenomenal job once again of creating a world that feels so real, so all-consuming, and so right for this story and these characters and it all just fits as easy as pie.

Wynne is a small town bursting with the most distinctive small town vibrancy that will have you wanting to take up residency within its limits in no time flat. The town of Wynne is almost its own character in this book, and in this series, so to be back within its wonderfulness felt darn good and darn right. This town may be small, but it is bursting with so much for you to love, and I am telling you that once you’re in its grasp, you’re never going to want to leave. Being back with the wonderfully distinctive characters I fell in love with in Roots and Wings was the cherry on top to a world that I seriously could not get enough of, and every moment with them in this book felt beyond good and so damn right.

Sunshine and Rain is a story about so many things. It’s a story about second chances at what could be. It’s a story about two people who are finally at that right moment in their life for it all to click. It’s a story about how every single part of your past and your own personal journey might just have been leading you to the exact place you always needed to be. It’s a story of feel good moments, a heck of a lot of build, a town that comes together when it really matters, kisses in the headlights, sparks in the moonlight, and oh so many possibilities for two truly unforgettable characters.

It’s also about how the world’s hottest farmer, gives the world’s best DJ a run for her money, and how along the way those two start to realize that while the past may be the past, and the present might not be as easy as they thought it’s be, the future is all theirs to be had.

Sunny and Rhett’s story in Wynne starts with one heck of a memorable reunion, and follows these two as they try to see where all of the feelings and past and possibilities between them could take them if they actually open themselves up to it. You see Sunny and Rhett have a bit of past with one another. A past that is still kind of stuck with them in a way that will have you smirking at the fact that a small town never forgets anything. Nothing about that past is too angsty or drama filled, but they share enough of a past that it holds them back a bit from embracing what they start to feel for one another when they’re reunited in Wynne years after that past.

The opening of Sunshine and Rain gives you that reunion, let’s you be there in those moments when Sunny and Rhett get their wheels turning about one another, and puts you with them as they start to see what could be. Both Sunny and Rhett are at a bit of a crossroads in their lives, trying to decide what they want, what feels right, and what they ultimately need in their life. Much of this book explores their own personal journeys of discovering what is most important to them, and what they’re going to do to get that and keep that.

As the pages of this book turn and as you fall harder and harder for those two, you will get more of their story, you will experience what it’s like for them to realize exactly what they need and what’s been missing from their lives, and you will feel every ounce of heartfelt connection and spark they share.

Sunny and Rhett’s characters were amazing, and I honestly can’t say that enough. They were real, they were authentic, they were easy to love and relate to. The way that M. Mabie so distinctively creates them both and their dynamic together connects you to them, invests you whole heartedly in every part of them and their story, and will have you rooting for them with all that you have. Their story may be low on drama, but don’t for one second think that that means it won’t hook you and sink you into it all with them. With the level of investment and connection you have to their characters, you are going to NEED every word of their story, you’re going to HAVE to know what happens next, and you’re going to WANT every single bit of what Sunshine and Rain gives you with them.

You’ll love the vibrancy that emanates from Sunny, and the endearing nature that Rhett exudes on every page of this book. You’ll love the back and forth that those two share, and you’ll love how much it makes you blush when they make each other blush. You’ll bask in the fact that those two have a history, yet are bound and determined to change the course of it all, some way or somehow. You’ll love how in it they both become, you’ll love how they’re not afraid to go there when it really matters, and you’ll love getting to be there every step of the way with them as they come to realize what’s really important and what they’re willing to do to get and keep everything they share.

You’ll feel the beginnings of something so right, something so needed, and something so good between those two, and the further they fall and the closer they get, you’ll need even more for things to work out for them.

Did I also mention that those two will make you blush and melt and just fall oh so hopelessly in love with them through every single page of this book?! Well they will both do just that, and then some, and before you know it, you will be fighting and rooting with all you have for Sunny and Rhett and their sunshine after the rain. And don’t worry you’re pretty little head to much because you’ll also continue to blush and melt all the way through right along with those two. Trust me. There is no resisting the pull, the feels, and the blush worthy moments that Sunny and Rhett will give you in Sunshine and Rain.

There is no resisting them at all.

And that is just part of what makes this book so phenomenal and one of my top reads of the year.

Sunshine and Rain is a book that feels beyond good to read. This book is the equivalent to a cool glass of sweet tea after a hot summer day, with its ability to make everything feel better and satisfy you in more ways than one. This book is like taking a deep, wonderful, and amazing breath that fills you up with exactly what you need and what you were missing all along. This book is as wonderful and warm as the sweet summer breeze, and the literal goodness that it exudes from every page will touch every part of your heart, mind, and soul as you experience what it has to offer.

Simply put, this book is good. So damn good. It’s phenomenally written, exceptionally crafted, and it’s bursting at the seams with a love story that is equal parts small town, feel good, give you the butterflies and goosebumps while stealing your breath in the same second, kind of good that wraps you up in it all. It’s wholly consuming nature and endearingly charming and vibrant characters is the sugar on top to the sweetest damn love story this side of the Mississippi.

Sunshine and Rain is a book that’s low on drama and high on love. It’s a book that wraps you up, gives you all the feels, and mesmerizes you with the literal amazingness it has within its pages. This book completely exudes what it means to feel and love and experience a story, and with its vibrancy and charm that literally knows no end, it is a book that you need in your life this very second. This book is Sunny and Rhett, their all-feeling and seriously sweet love story, and so much more too.

Through every single page of this book you will feel and experience and know the shear talent of M. Mabie’s exceptional writing with everything she gives you with Sunny and Rhett, and in the end, you’ll be thrilled you experienced all of the sunshine and rain this book so spectacularly gave you.

This has got to be one of the cutest couples I’ve read for awhile. Rhett had me swooning; and anyone who knows me knows I do NOT swoon. I love this small town community that is Wynne. All the residents know this young couples history; the town favorites. Rhett the towns track star and Sunny the towns radio station DJ. This wasn’t your typical chase and catch storyline, which added to the pull. There’s not much convincing needed with these two. I’ll have to finish this series but at a later date. I’ll be visiting again, Wynne.

I'm (clearly) a huge sucker for romance and oh my gosh, this! I live for these stories!!! To say that I loved it is an understatement. Honestly, I feel like I'm slowly developing an obsession over it because I just finished it and I already want to read it again. I want to get a list of all the songs on Sunny's and Rhett's playlist. Their love story is just too pure and too perfect and it was everything I wanted! My cheeks hurt from smiling so much while reading this book.

giddy grin

I'm sure everyone who saw me probably thought I looked like a maniac with my crazy grin. It was just such a feel good story and a great read. I'd like to read the other books in the series, but I still can't get over this one. Definitely one of my top favorites this year!

———- update 9/3/21 ———-

Just finished my reread and love it even more than the first time. This is just too pure!!!!! Makes my heart melt. Everyone should read it.

“I wanted to kiss you last night and all day today.”
He ran his fingers over my hair as I pulled back to look at him, my confession making my cheeks flush hot.
“I’ve wanted to kiss you my whole damn life. I win.”

It’s official: I’m moving to Wynne! I was charmed by this small town in Roots and Wings but I absolutely fell in love with it during this book. In a scary and complicated world, there’s just something so alluring about their simple way of life. This series is the perfect thing if you are looking for a way to escape your stresses for a few hours. These sweet, low drama stories will sweep you away, make your heart flutter and leave you with a giant grin on your face. This story in particular was all kinds of amazing! Get ready to swoon hard because Sunny and Rhett’s story will give you butterflies and fill your heart right up with love for these two.

The facts remained. I was still me, and she was still the sun I orbited around.

I don’t even want to give a recap of this story because the blurb doesn’t say much and it was fun going in not knowing what to expect. I will tell you that I LOVED the backstory between Sunny and Rhett. The history they shared was EVERYTHING! It’ll take you back to a much simpler and innocent time of young love and all that goes along with it. The flashbacks were probably the most adorable thing ever and they are sure to make you fall hard for Rhett. He was the sweetest thing as a boy, and while he retained the kind heart as he grew up, he’s now ALL man and he’s definitely caught Sunny’s eye. The chemistry and slow burn between these two was amazing and my insides were a puddle of goo while I sported a goofy grin as I read much of this book. Their developing relationship just made my heart happy. There was a teensy bit of angst, mainly due to the notable age difference between the two, but I even loved this aspect of the story too.

I just want to gush about all of the things that I loved about this book but I’ll save you from having to read my words, instead pick up a copy of this book, pour a glass of sweet tea, crank up the country music and let M. Mabie sweep you away to my new favorite fictional town and get ready to fall in love with Wynne and all of its charming and endearing residents!

“I’ve always been yours. It’s about time you caught up.”

With her best friend, the one she half imagined would always be single, getting married and having a baby, time, circumstance and a nagging mother have finally hit it home to Sunny that she's not getting any younger. Pointing out that with every year her chances of snagging a good husband in their sleepy little country town diminish, dear old Mom has really got her thinking.

No stranger to dating, Sunny has never felt that spark that she's been holding out for. That racing of blood that would let her know that she's on the cusp of something special, and is finally wondering if her mother has been right all along and that she's simply 'too picky'. Perhaps its time to swallow her pride and settle for Mr Okay rather than holding out for Mr Perfect.

It's in that mindset that she stumbles across HIM! A deliciously handsome stranger who instantly sets off all the sparks, and has an entire flock of butterflies doing aeronautical stunts in her belly. Only he barely spares her a glance, and apparently, he's not a stranger after all.

Once again M. Mabie has crafted a wonderfully understated small town romance that leaves all of the high drama to those sophisticated city folk. Here, it's just two people, living two very different lives trying to work out if they can forge something special.

In a small town, everyone seems to have an opinion, memories are long and judgments often come quick leaving Sunny and Rhett in the kind of quandary only that kind of environment could produce, since any kind of relationship between the two is guaranteed to dredge up loads of memories, and has the potential to spark all sorts of judgments.

With one of the absolute sweetest leading men you could ever hope to meet in the pages of a romance novel, Sunshine and Rain is the kind of story that has everyone second guessing themselves and re-evaluating what they thought they knew and wondering, hoping even, that maybe, with the passing of years, maybe this time things could work out entirely differently.

In one sitting I swallowed this book whole and couldn't be happier for the experience, since sometimes true love isn't all about the grand gestures, the flashy gifts and the bright lights. Sometimes it's the little things: a flower, a note, a candy bar. Things that bring back a smile each and every day, and that's what you'll find in the little town of Wynne.

Sunshine and Rain is completely charming and I fell hard for this book from the very start. This tender second-chance romance between Sunny and Rhett made me smile, and often.

We're back in Wynne, the small town first described in the author's prior book, Roots & Wings. Sunny is the local celebrity, manning the town's sole radio station from her home. When she happens upon Rhett after 10 years, he is nothing like the 13 year old she remembers, who made crushing on the then 18 year old cheerleader an art form. The attraction is now mutual and they both embark on a tentative journey to see if the sparks now sizzling around them can turn into true love.

I was drawn to both characters immediately. Both know what they want and it was a sincere pleasure watching as Sunny and Rhett try to resist the definite chemistry between them but at the same time never wanting something as simple as a kiss to end. I so loved that it was their story. Told in alternating POV's, we get inside their heads and hearts and see events happen from both sides. That nervousness, those butterflies whenever the other is around: such fun to witness!

And yes there are secondary characters that add the right touch and getting to catch up with Hannah and Vaughn (Sunny's bestie and her husband from Roots & Wings) was great but they were never distractions. The community rituals that Wynne offered was also a great catalyst in bringing Sunny and Rhett together and I really enjoyed that small town feeling as I read.

There are touching scenes in every chapter as Rhett and Sunny start to fall in love. Memories are an added bonus, reminding both of them of Rhett's sweet obsession with Sunny when they were young. In addition, there is a ton of passion between the two and their trysts were wildly hot and sometimes completely unexpected which I loved.

Mo Mabie has certainly upped her game with this one. All the ingredients for a truly satisfying read are here. Sunshine and Rain is simply a feelgood kind of book. And one that I highly recommend. It is pure joy and I adored it!

5 stars!

"Back then, I wouldn't have had a clue what to do with a girl like her if I'd actually gotten her, but time changed many things. Because I sure as hell would know now."

BE STILL MY FREAKING HEART!!!!

This book was right up my alley! I love sweet love stories like this.
Young boy in love with the older girl that sweetly turned him down...Only to find out years later that the same boy had turned into the man she couldn't stop thinking about.

Sunny was a small town radio DJ who was as single as they come. With the big 3-0 around the corner, she finds herself thinking about her future...and who would be a part of it.
Rhett carried a torch for her for as long as he could remember. Returning to his hometown, he knew he was bound to see her again. But what he got was so much more.

"I wanted to kiss you last night and all day today."
"I've wanted to kiss you my whole damn life. I win."

I found myself anticipating each page constantly. I couldn't wait until these two finally got together, and Rhett's dreams finally came true!

M. Mabie knows how to write romance. But this story was romance of the sweetest and purest kind, so that made it so much more enjoyable. I couldn't get enough!!!

"What do you want?"
"I don't know yet. I'm still figuring it out. But it looks a hell of a lot like you."
"Well, just say the word and it's yours, Sunny."

I want more of Rhett and Sunny!!! Can this happen?! Okay, I know that it won't, but oh my goodness, I can't get them out of my head!! I loved them!!

Small town romances hit you right in the heart with their lifelong friendships and family ties. You feel like they are your own loved ones, and you can picture yourself their with them. That's when you know you're reading a wonderful story.

Can't wait for more stories from the lovely town of Wynne!!

"I've always been yours. It's about time you caught up."

This book was so sweet, like sugary sweet, and it was funny and all around a great read. It's easy to read and the characters were easy to fall in love with, even Andy, the dog. And Rhett he's younger than Sunny but that still didn't through me off.

Rhett however as a boy in this book was so freaking adorable and sweet. He knew exactly what he wanted at such a young age and he never gave up. And when he was young I think Sunny did what was right, although I'm not sure the anyone would have cared about the age difference than really. Even after all that time has passed of them being separated their pull to one another never died.

I laughed often, swooned more, and loved every single part. Low on drama. High on Love. Is what M. Mabie tells you to expect with this series and it couldn't be anymore true.

I loved all the tiny things about the book as well, the whispered "Sunshine", things said to each other through the songs at the radio station in which Sunny works at, AND things said out loud or in front of other, ie The City Water Tower.

This author is amazing and each book I read from her, even the ones that are heavy on the drama, are amazing. This whole series makes for a nice break from the drama and no matter how insta love, or over the top sweet it is I love them. This one though I love a lot more than the first in the series. Don't get me wrong I liked and enjoyed that one too but this one for me is now my favorite. And look out for it on my Best of 2016 list because it will be there.

Now I'm off to find my next read, even though I'd like to re-read this one...
