A Wedding in Cornwall #3

A Cottage in Cornwall

Rate this book
Spring is in the air at Cliffs House, the charming Cornish estate that Julianne Morgen has come to think of as home. Her next big event is a personal favor to her employer: coordinating the perfect wedding for Lady Amanda’s friend and mentor, artist Constance Strong, whose late-in-life courtship is worthy of the storybooks themselves.

But as if helping Lady Amanda isn’t enough to occupy her mind, Julianne finds herself distracted by personal matters. Her long distance romance with Matthew Rose, the handsome and brilliant horticulturist has been on the rocks for weeks now – and when Matthew suddenly returns to Cornwall, he brings news with him that could change everything between them.

Can Julianne help Lady Amanda pull off the perfect surprise wedding for a case of true love? And no matter the odds they face, will Julianne and Matthew finally find their own happily ever after?

Another charmingly enjoyable book in Laura Briggs Cornwall series, which I am loving so far. This may be the third book, but I do think it works as a standalone, then again, each installment is under 100 pages, so would be quite easy to go back and read them all in order to get a full feel for the characters.

This time around there are two main story lines, the progress of Julianne's on-off relationship with sexy Poldark-esque Matthew Rose, and also the short notice wedding that Lady Amanda wants Julianne's help with.

The wedding is for Lady Amanda's godmother, a talented artist who really doesn't want a fuss, but since they are event planners, what was supposed to be a tiny gathering, turns into a far more elaborate reception than may have been anticipated, but still completely understated compared to the majority of events held at Cliff House.

As someone who has been reading this series from the start, one of the characters in particular this time, is given a tough storyline, with a bit of emotional depth to it, which I wasn't expecting, but it was encouraging to see, in this otherwise relatively light hearted series.

A Cottage in Cornwall is a pleasurable way to spend an hour or two, with its picturesque location, some creative cooking, and a beautiful back story to the couple getting married.

Thank you to Laura Briggs for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

As with the previous entries in this series, this is a novella -- or perhaps a short story -- rather than a full length book. I was seriously irritated when this one began. It had seemed Julianne and Matt had a HEA at the end of the second book, albeit with Matt working in the U.S. and Julianne staying in Cornwall.

However, as this book begins, Julianne and Matt haven't talked in weeks, and their last communications were angry. Then, when the two do communicate, another huge spanner is thrown in the works. In the first book we had Matt's ex-. In the second we had Julianne's ex-. And now something else?

The focus of this is Julianne's planning the marriage of an older artist and the "love of her life." Along the way, we get a lot more of Matt and Julianne, and by the end I was happy indeed. So I'll give this one a B-, and round to four stars.

A Lovely summer read

Although I really enjoyed this, the third book, one tiny thing irritated me. Bulbs that have been planted take three months to show through the ground and a further four to six weeks to flower

The Continuing Story – 4.5 stars

This book begins with a rather startling sentence about someone going to prison. That was all I had read when I lifted my head to answer a question. When I got back to the story I realised it was a television series’ hero who was (possibly) going to prison. Whew! The telly hero bears a remarkable resemblance to Julianne’s own hero; except HIS heroic status appears to be somewhat in doubt. At the end of the last book Matthew left Cornwall for a spring lecture series in Boston, leaving Julianne at Cliffs House to carry on with her job as event planner.

Long-distance relationships are high maintenance, even in this high tech age with face-to-face chats via webcam. Disagreements that can be sorted out very quickly in person with a touch or a hug, can escalate when a couple is apart, and that appears to be the case with Julianne and Matthew.

Meanwhile Julianne and Lady Amanda are secretly arranging a surprise wedding and reception for Constance, a renowned botanical artist, and one of Lady Amanda’s oldest and dearest friends. Julianna spends some time talking to Constance who told her the story of how her intended, Joseph, had proposed. This whimsical paragraph so delightfully phrased is an exquisite piece of writing and I have read it five times already. (It is also highlighted so I can find it again easily.) Further on in the story, when Julianne attends an exhibition of Constance’s watercolours in London, I came across another descriptive treasure that I have read several times. This one is also highlighted.

In between all, this Julianne is dealing with Matthew’s return, and with a very disagreeable, disobliging and downright rude temporary gardener at Cliffs House. The rest you will have to read for yourselves.

This book is very well-written and edited, and I am delighted to find a modern author who isn’t afraid to meander off on flights of fancy, especially given her marvellous use of the English language.

I am terribly tempted to give a five star rating just for those two paragraphs, but sticking to my code, I will bend it to give 4.5 stars. I DO wish Amazon would make provision for reviewers to give half stars.
