[Review for vols. 1-4. Spoilers, obvs.]

The covers are a bit misleading, because they make you think it's going to be super girly. I picked it up because I tend to be impressed with what Kodansha puts out, no matter the subject matter. Plus, I cracked it open and the art reminded me a bit of the stellar A Silent Voice, so I thought I'd give it a shot despite my reservations about the cover art. Inside is an incredibly insightful profile of a young man who fails at relationship after relationship, despite his good intentions towards women and his attempts to treat them respectfully.
Part of his problem is that he tends to idealize women--not quite to the point of objectification, but his use of pornography certainly doesn't help--and consequently freezes up around them to varying degrees with expected misunderstandings following. But the creators do an excellent job of showing us the difficulties he had growing up: a father who left for a mistress and a mother who subsequently became unhinged--and never really revealed her true self to him. It's pretty easy to connect his difficult relationship with his mother to his difficult relationship to women.
It might be tempting to put him in the "white knight" category, but the big difference there is that he doesn't seem interested in anyone else knowing it. He will impetuously rush to the defense of a woman he is close to but rarely ever checks in with her to ask if that's all right. In general, he makes a lot of assumptions about how his actions affect the women around him. This, combined with his low self-esteem, lead him to self-deprecate and inevitably the relationship deteriorates because his focus then turns inward and he loses that connection to what his really partners want or need.
I feel a lot of compassion for Serizawa because I think his heart is in the right place. But he tends to be a bit of a loner, and without sufficient external input, continues to spin on his relationship hamster wheel. Which is unfortunate, because he has an uncanny knack for attracting incredibly attractive women, haha.
I genuinely hope he learns something by the end, because his endless spinning is getting depressing! Most of the book is flashbacks, though, and early on we get an indication that the mystery woman who kicks off Serizawa's reminiscences has also made him think about his patterns in a different way.
I'm in the middle of volume 5, and it's still dealing with one of his past relationships, so there's only a volume and a half left for things to end well! Not that I'm counting on it, since the story has done a remarkable job of creating realistic interactions between Serizawa and his various women. So much so, that it can be heartwrenching, especially in the case of his relationship with Gucci.
Overall, it's an excellent series and I can't recommend it highly enough!

~4/5
(Spoiler with warning.)

I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed this volume, and how badly I want more.

We see how things conclude with the tutor in this volume, and it’s messy. He’s got a huge crush, and she’s got a boyfriend, not to mention their age/maturity difference. Things end on an okay note, because while he’s upset, he does what he can not to ruin things for her.

(Spoiler!) The surprise here, though, is that the male friend he makes at the cram school, also has a crush on him. This is handled very well, with a respectful response, and a solid friendship built. I was very happy to see this. (End Spoiler!)

Next, we meet two girls. The first one is always on the run, needing to get from one place to the next. She has an accent, she’s clumsy, she’s busy but also a lot of fun. Then the second one, who has a crush on Serizawa, and wants to go out with him. He doesn’t quite realize that he has two girls liking him, though. He’s a bit oblivious.

I hope things wrap up okay here, though. I’m really looking forward to reading the next one.

The second volume of Forget Me Not has a lot less of Serizawa being either brutalized or brutalizing others, but plenty of angst.

His crush on his teacher comes to its conclusion. It's heartbreaking and humiliating for Serizawa, and he struggles with how to treat her afterwards. He's not entirely successful in behaving well, but it's hard to blame him given his shock and pain. Unless you're Serizawa himself, since this is supposedly one of the relationships he's giving as as proof that he knows "what it's like to shatter a romance by hurting the one you love."

His behavior with next two women he meets only reinforced my feeling that Serizawa just isn't that strong as a person. He tends to react more than he charts his own course. I remember feeling uneasy (the first time I read it) about how he was going to mess things up, as I watched the situation take shape. Reading it the second time wasn't any more reassuring.

Drama to be continued in Volume 3...

Wasn't too crazy about the teacher story, so I'm glad it moved along quickly. I'm still not sure if I like this guy or not. The art is gorgeous, but I'm having a really hard time telling the female characters apart.

The trail of destruction and bad decisions continues in this volume. Serizawa continues to be his own worst enemy and he very believably gets in his own way most of the time, both in his assumptions and when he lets his emotions run away with his common sense after things go wrong.

This is most exemplified by the Hermes chapter, which implodes because of a combination of what Serizawa assumes (I think Hermes herself handles this with a combination of naïveté and diplomacy, depending on the moment) and good old-fashioned bad luck.

Serizawa’s friend through this is holding onto a secret of his own and, while it’s pretty predictable, it IS handled with surprising delicacy and he ends up being both a good friend and an interesting character (I think I may see the intent of this series in this outcome, but I’ll wait another volume to be sure).

The second story arc is still ongoing, but this one is about the classic ‘two friends who get along so well that they don’t realize they’d make a great couple’ and all the fallout that accumulates as they begin to inadvertently hurt each other with their choices. It’s really going in some interesting directions.

Already have the third volume, so suffice to say I am enjoying this series far more than I figured I would. It’s a downer at times, given the premise it would be hard put to not be a bummer, but it’s hard to not feel bad for Serizawa and wish he could get it right.

Some things that bother me as I continue with this series:

-So far, all the women are drawn in this very “moe”-esque way where they seem to look too similar to each other, as if they are just blurring and blending into one female archetype that exists only to “torment” the male lead and his burgeoning experiences of lust and love.

-Given that the male lead is the one whose head space we are in, all the female characters also seem skewed in a way where we are seemingly meant to view them negatively in the ways they “string along” the main character and wound his poor, poor male ego.

-I really do not like how the male lead eventually pictures all these women in sexually violent and dominant ways, such as when he imagines his teacher Hermès having sex with her boyfriend.

All he needs is a fedora and to call himself a nice guy.

Idk about anyone else, but I find the women and prince character in this series way more compelling than our main. I'm getting Rob from High Fidelity vibes which is to say he acknowledges he is an asshole without taking responsibility for his actions or changing his behavior.

I borrowed the first 3 volumes from the library so I will read through volume 3 but I don't see myself borrowing 4 - 7.

The fourth star is for the Hermes story, which began in volume 1.

So far I've been really impressed with this series and its main character. Unlike volume 1, which covers a large expanse of time, volume 2 shows us the rest of Yusuke's relationship with Hermes and starts to tell us a little about his freshman year of university. The end result is that the book moves a lot faster, but doesn't really cover as much ground.

Still, this series is full of beautiful artwork and moments that I think a lot of people can empathize with.
