[Review for vols. 1-4. Spoilers, obvs.]

The covers are a bit misleading, because they make you think it's going to be super girly. I picked it up because I tend to be impressed with what Kodansha puts out, no matter the subject matter. Plus, I cracked it open and the art reminded me a bit of the stellar A Silent Voice, so I thought I'd give it a shot despite my reservations about the cover art. Inside is an incredibly insightful profile of a young man who fails at relationship after relationship, despite his good intentions towards women and his attempts to treat them respectfully.
Part of his problem is that he tends to idealize women--not quite to the point of objectification, but his use of pornography certainly doesn't help--and consequently freezes up around them to varying degrees with expected misunderstandings following. But the creators do an excellent job of showing us the difficulties he had growing up: a father who left for a mistress and a mother who subsequently became unhinged--and never really revealed her true self to him. It's pretty easy to connect his difficult relationship with his mother to his difficult relationship to women.
It might be tempting to put him in the "white knight" category, but the big difference there is that he doesn't seem interested in anyone else knowing it. He will impetuously rush to the defense of a woman he is close to but rarely ever checks in with her to ask if that's all right. In general, he makes a lot of assumptions about how his actions affect the women around him. This, combined with his low self-esteem, lead him to self-deprecate and inevitably the relationship deteriorates because his focus then turns inward and he loses that connection to what his really partners want or need.
I feel a lot of compassion for Serizawa because I think his heart is in the right place. But he tends to be a bit of a loner, and without sufficient external input, continues to spin on his relationship hamster wheel. Which is unfortunate, because he has an uncanny knack for attracting incredibly attractive women, haha.
I genuinely hope he learns something by the end, because his endless spinning is getting depressing! Most of the book is flashbacks, though, and early on we get an indication that the mystery woman who kicks off Serizawa's reminiscences has also made him think about his patterns in a different way.
I'm in the middle of volume 5, and it's still dealing with one of his past relationships, so there's only a volume and a half left for things to end well! Not that I'm counting on it, since the story has done a remarkable job of creating realistic interactions between Serizawa and his various women. So much so, that it can be heartwrenching, especially in the case of his relationship with Gucci.
Overall, it's an excellent series and I can't recommend it highly enough!

Serizawa is depressingly human sometimes. He tries his hardest, but he’s got no clue how to handle anything and the cycle of destruction continues this volume.

After breaking up with Yamaguchi because he wasn’t really that into her and hey maybe you shouldn’t have done it in the first place, Serizawa, our protagonist ends up with Tsukino and you would think that might lead to a little happily ever after.

This series, however, is a lot more interested in clobbering you as much as possible with emotional turmoil and Serizawa quickly learns that loving somebody from a distance is a lot easier than being involved with them.

Tsukino has always been way too busy for life in general and her relationship with Serizawa ends up being all the excuse she needs to lean on him. They try their best, but it gets to the point where he’s just supporting her and not caring about her (and in the worst case he basically tries to use her as a trophy). Naturally, it explodes in the worst fashion because that’s Forget Me Not in a nutshell - romance promised, wholesale destruction delivered.

There’s backstory to why Serizawa might think the way he does and we see how miserable his home life became when things took a turn there. It’s all pretty grim this volume and, dammit, I want him to get it right just once. I hope he’s learning from this.

Eminently digestible - this is one of the most easily read manga I’ve been into for a while. It’s not fun, per se, but it’s always interesting.

Even though I knew it wouldn't last, I was still rooting for the relationship between Tsukushi and Serizawa. It was interesting how they spent so much more time on that relationship, and also how those chapters really encompassed 2 relationships.
I still plan on continuing the series as I am really interested where it will lead.

The Tsukushi Makino story finished in this volume and was interesting. The remainder of the volume didn't do much for me.

~4/5

Finally, his messed up relationships with Yamaguchi and Tsukushi. He ends one and goes into the relationship he thought he wanted, only to find out it's not quite what he expected. He messes that up, too.

My favorite part of this volume, by far, was the strength that Yamaguchi showed when she yelled at him. That was a really strong scene, and I was impressed by it.

We get to see what Serizawa's parents were like in this volume, and what kind of influence that had on him. Seeing his mom devoted to a man who was never around, and eventually cheated. Some things make sense, after that.

In the last chapter, Serizawa is a mess. He's falling apart, and it's very obvious. We'll see what happens with that cliffhanger.

I'm really hooked on this series. It's very smart and realistic, the characters feel real and it's easy to grow attached even when you know things are going to end up bad. I'm interested to see where it goes next.
