Carter Gabel saved his own life, and rescued his city from destruction. But, after the Pirates forced him into hiding, he spent years holed up in Crighton, city of ghosts. Just as he thinks the world has forgotten him, a knock on the door interrupts his life and as he opens it, his next journey begins. An unexpected foe waits for him at the end to challenge everything he knows and all that his future holds. What must Carter do to survive? And what does he sacrifice to become a legend?
Writing out of the Black Hills of South Dakota, Jonas comes up with new and creative worlds incorporating the plausible in the realms of sci-fi and paranormal. He entertains with suspense, humor and cliff-hanging moments that will keep readers wanting to never put the book down. With a hefty supply of peanut M&Ms and coffee, he continues writing a series of different genres he will one day connect together.
The final installment in the Legend of Carter Gabel trilogy, A Time to Die finally explains why Carter has become a legend. Fans of the first two books can look forward to more of what they love: Carter's trademark (read: snarky) sense of humor, sensational sci-fi-based powers, exciting twists, and of course, the heartwarming family dynamic between our band of misfits. Once again, Jonas Lee has delivered a well-written, distinctly unique book.
Though it has much in common with its predecessors, A Time to Die definitely stands out. Without revealing spoilers, in this novel, the stakes and emotional weight are raised higher than before. Carter is, more than ever, faced with his own failures, and struggles to overcome the obstacles placed before him. Just as I thought I had the ending figured out, Lee threw in the ultimate twist, masterfully tying the entire trilogy together and leaving me stunned, but impressed. Minor spoiler: the ending might taste a little bittersweet, but it will be satisfying. Have tissues on hand.
Overall, A Time to Die makes a perfect end to a thrilling time travel trilogy. While I'm sad to see Carter's story end, I'm super-anxious to see what Lee writes next. And I'll be first in line to read it!
A Time to Die is a perfect, if not terribly sad, ending to Carter's journey. There were tons of twists and turns in this final installment but the snark is a constant that will have you spitting your morning orange juice across your desk...or at least it did with me. The ending will seriously make you say "What? No!" and will have you skimming back through the other two books to see if there are any Easter eggs to be found. You'll cry, you'll laugh, you'll want to throw the book across the room (which I did...more than once), and you'll love every minute of it. If you haven't picked up this series yet, you definitely should!
Normally, I'm a very patient person, however, I don't think I've ever been more excited for a book release ever in my life. I literally could not put A Time To Die down once I started. The conclusion to Carter (snarky time-traveling teen) and Mo's (awesome mind reader girlfriend) story is a writhing mass of feels, right to the face. And the heart. And the gut. It's heart-wrenching and mind-boggling and laugh-out-loud funny. The teens and their gifted friends endure loss, betrayal, and shocking revelations. Throughout the many twists and turns of the time travel arcs, Jonas has managed to weave the loose threads into a story that makes perfect sense. Honestly, if I could give more than five stars I would... because it is just. That. Good.
