"Ahhhhhhhh!! He looked…. I saw him glare at me! Dumbass! A corpse can’t gl…."

This definitely gave off ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ vibes but it wasn’t as entertaining. The story was okay, not something that held my full attention, and one I won’t read more of. Think one volume was enough for me.

Five teens, 1 murder, 1 skeleton… that is now missing. Things will get dangerous!

One of my Kodansha-Free-Manga-Haul, I wasn’t planning on writing a review, but here were are. While I didn’t enjoy it always, there were some good moments. This is one of the darker ones on my list, I mostly went with cute, romance, or comedy. But I just couldn’t resist this one when I saw it, it gave me all the horror movie vibes. You know the ones I am talking about. We accidentally/not-so-accidentally killed someone, now be silent, oh no someone found out. Those movies. You know where everything goes from normal-ish to fuckity fuck.

In this book we meet 5 friends, 4 of them super popular, one not so much. Each of them seemingly seem normal and sweet, but we find out that when they are eleven they murdered a man. For quite a bit of the book you are wondering who and why, I mean, normal kids don’t just keep a dead body and do a ritual so no one talks. But then later we find out and I was just crying. Sad that these kids had to pick that route to save a friend of theirs.

I did like that we get to know most of the characters quite well. From bubbly and cute Haruka who will go far to protect the secret to is he a kind guy or just a bad guy Akira to cute but silent Tsubaki who carries a big weight with her.

I guess a part of me would be like why didn’t they just call the cops when they killed the guy. I mean given the circumstances… I get that they were eleven and panicked, but if you panic so much that you decide that burial is the next best thing… that is not OK. I mean, things wouldn’t have been easy if they had confessed, but maybe less stress-inducing than now. And then later with the skeleton disappearing along with their pact, I would have liked one of them to just step up and say heck to it. Instead they just go along with it, having to do something that had my stomach turning and which I mostly just tried to get through. I guess they are really dedicated to hiding this secret of theirs. I wonder how far they will be going to protect themselves and that secret. I wonder how far that mysterious guy who found the skeleton will make them go.

The last part just pissed me off. So a warning for assault along with gore and gruesome scenes. Girl, get away from that guy, holy crap. Go to that other guy, you other friend, the one you are clearly interested in but due to what happened when you were 11 went a bit sour. He still likes you. You like him. He is much better than mr Dickison who you are dating right now.

Oh, and I have to give points to the cover, that one is haunting.

All in all, I am a bit on the fence about this one. On the one hand it is a good read with murder and mystery, but on the other hand I just couldn’t help but shake my head at so many bad decisions and how many secrets lurked in this friendgroup.

I would've liked this better if it wasn't shounen+ecchi and didn't come with all its eye-rolling wish-fulfillment tropes. Maybe you'll like this better if you're a young boy and enjoy imagining yourself as Shintarou, and thus all the boob-grabbing and the way all female characters inexplicably lusts over him just ｡☆˚｡⋆makes sense｡⋆˚☆｡

Honestly, Ryuu was way hotter both physically and characteristically, so irl he'd win over Shin and Akira hands down. Sorry to burst your bubble, neets.

Anyway. I'm not the demography for it, whatever, my own fault, blablabla ... but was that almost-rape scene really necessary? I mean, other than to get some bondage panels in there? Was that stripping-down scene really contributive to the plot in the grander scheme of things? Was it?

I also looove the way these five friends are supposed to be the bestest of buddies, but really they're all just best friends with Shin. Don't even get me started on Haruka and Tsubaki. They're like, lukewarm acquaintances at best. The only reason they're both there is because they both wanna bang Shin. I'm not even exaggerating.
How or why they all gravitate to Shin to that extent in the first place still eludes me. Like I get it, he's super protective and would do anything for his friends---except they ALL would do anything for their friends, so You're Not That Special, Bro ... plus this protective side only comes out AFTER they've killed his dad and he kinda has to be protective of them ... since they were all, you know, protective of him to the point of actually killing a whole grown-ass adult for him.

But I'm getting side-tracked. The plot. The story. It was interesting enough, it was okay. Major spoilers ahead, don't come at me since I've warned you.

The main plot revolved around the mystery of who found out about their murder all those years ago, and why he's sending this group of tweens out to run errands instead of straight-up just reporting them to the police (or even, I dunno, extorting them for money??)

The ending was sufficiently satisfying. I am really glad they all faced some form of justice, because by the end of the series, I really ... didn't particularly like any of them, lol. Except maybe Ryuu. You deserve a better group of friends, my man. And certainly deserve better than being a second-choice-rebound for Haruka. It's not her fault. She was written into a shounen.

I wished there would've been more consequences for them, though. Tsubaki literally arranged for and looked on while Akira--their purported best friend--was killed, and they all just had a huge cry-sesh and apology circle-jerk and we're all good? Really? REALLY? Ugh. Female-lead-in-a-shounen syndrome at its peak.

Solid book.

There’s the normal Dawson’s Creek teen drama going on, love triangles and whatnot, but there’s also a murder mystery going on, which adds a nice flavor.

Has it been done before? Sure.

Was it still refreshing? Yeah.

It had a bit of gore. A bit of darkness wrapped up in the drama. Characters are for the most part two-dimensional so far, but I don’t mind. It’s working for me.

I was hooked on this series this past week. Great characters and I loved the art. Some parts were a little cliche but over all a strong series. Stumbled on it by chance and I’m glad I went ahead and gave it a read.

I liked the story well enough to continue. But how women were treated in this book just made me sick. They are oversexualized and their main character traits are that they want to have sex with the protagonist. The way trauma and grief is handled is definitely the most interesting component but the plot is a little weak. It is an interesting concept but needs a little more flair.

The heel turn of Akira was kind of sudden (unless you want to count the yearbook) and just pulled me right out of the story. The unnecessary rape scene that followed didn't help.

The art was a tad underbaked but occasionally had some standout moments. The head rolling out the bag was a good one. And the panel of Tsubaki holding the hammer was chilling.

A series about a group of teens with some trauma in their past affecting their current day.

Very dramatic with some character building stuff, though the fact that we're seeing them as young adults at the start leads to us getting some false impressions about group Dynamics and the actual incident that occurred. The writer expertly uses that to lead us to false conclusions before pulling the wool out from under our eyes.

I'm just a bit concerned about the amount of volumes out in Japan. It's up to 6 already. This really didn't feel like a long, drawn out series. If some of our cast start dying after such a long setup, I can see people jumping the ship on this one.

Five friends bound by an oath to remember and never betray each over their dark past.

Honestly the description of the book tells you just about everything you need to know about this darker slice of life turned blackmail/psychological drama. Just as a warning though the children in the story were 11 at the time and are only 16 now but there is a scene of angry jealousy leading to ripping of clothes and the potential beginning of rape as well as a scene in a flashback when one of the girls still suffering from the murder tries to have the son of the man that is murdered touch her (though he does not go all the way. Of course there is also violence, a skeleton, and gore to be found in this volume too so if you are sensitive to any of the above things you might want to overlook this series as a potential future read.

All in all I personally thought the characters were pretty interesting (though incredibly dumb even for children considering the evidence they seem to leave behind that leads to a blackmailer's trap) but not just because of who they are but because they seem to have this other side of them that has been growing under their daily forms and as the pressure grows from the man keeping the bones of their former victim so does the darkness they have never been able to deal with for 5 years. Guess we have to keep reading to see who really breaks first and what horrors their tormentor will visit upon them next.

Eine japanischer Manga-Serie in sieben Bänden rund um fünf Schulfreunde, Shintaro, Tsubaki, Ryu, Akari, die ein Schwur eint. Im Laufe der 195 Seiten wird das Geheimnis um den Schwur klar: die fünf Freunde haben fünf Jahre zuvor, im Alter von elf Jahren einen Menschen umgebracht und verscharrt.

Als Akira erfährt, dass am Ort, wo die Leiche verscharrt wurde, ein Golfplatz errichtet werden soll, wollen die fünf Freunde die Leiche ausgraben und woanders hinbringen – die Leiche ist aber verschwunden. Die Serie entwickelt sich zu einer Hardcore-Version von „Stand By Me“.

Aus europäischer Perspektive irrlichtert der Comic zwischen dumm-pubertär (Shintaro fasst im Halbschlaf versehentlich Tsubaki an die Brust und murmelt "Oh, eine Fleischtasche"), differenzierter Zeichnung der komplexen Beziehung der drei Jungs und zwei Mädchen und dem feinen Aufbau eines psychologischen Thrillers.

Mangas sind geschwätzig. Ich bin mir daher noch nicht einmal sicher, ob der erste Band zum Anfixen ausreicht. Aber spätestens nach dem zweiten Band ist man drin. Dazu muss man aber immer wieder über einige furchtbare Passagen und sehr anzüglichen Zeichnungen hinweg sehen, die den Eindruck vermitteln, dass das Zielpublikum pubertierende Jungs sind.

Diesem ersten Band solo würde ich daher nur 3 von 5 Sternen geben. Die 7-bändige Serie an sich, dürfte mehr bekommen.

5 friends have kept their pact for 5 years. The story centres around Shin, an aloof teenage boy with low self esteem and a burden of guilt and regret. He's surrounded by 4 friends who (from his POV) are too good for him - almost like of circumstances didn't bind them, then he wouldn't be worth their time.

When someone has stolen the remains and blackmails them, the tensions rise and Shin is compelled to do whatever it takes to protect his friends. However, the question is raised: What secrets are the others keeping from him?

I found that I didn't quite emotionally connect with Shin, the main character. This is perhaps where the sense of cliche stems from. Dramatic events happened, and the expected emotional responses happened, but I didn't get a strong sense of Shin's internal struggle/emotional journey... Why was he so compelled to go so far?

The premise is promising but by the end of Vol 1, I was on the fence. I would be OK with leaving the series, just as much as I would be OK with reading Vol 2.

Ma... ma... Cos'ho letto? Non lo so ma mi è piaciuto parecchio!

Cinque amici con un segreto: hanno ucciso un uomo e l'hanno seppellito in una grotta. Ogni anno ci tornano per rinnovare il loro giuramento. C'è la ragazzina carina e tenera, c'è la più bella della scuola che sta insieme al più bello della scuola, c'è un ex teppista sulla via della redenzione e c'è Shintaro.

Shintaro è colui che ha salvato tutti ma anche quello che è pronto a fare tutto ciò serve per proteggere i suoi amici. Per quanto possa essere un po' così, è il personaggio che più mi ha colpito di questo primo numero.

Poi tutto cambia quando ricevono una telefonata: «I know what you did last summer». Solo per citare il film (e il libro), non perché sia effettivamente passato solo un anno. La loro vita cambia, guidata da queste telefonate.

Ma neanche il più bello della scuola sembra chi dice di essere.

Non vedo l'ora di leggere anche il secondo volume.

Creepy and intriguing. Already have a favourite pairing and am a little disappointed that it a) not seems to be a thing but also b) the character I was thinking was so caring and sweet was a manipulative asshole. D: (Why? I shipped Akira and Shintaro, damnit!) Although the protagonist may just be a psychopath, he seems to be very unfeeling.
I had very positive feelings at the beginning, but now I am not so sure. It would have been great if for once the suspicions of the main character was diverted or just a plain false ("watch out for Akira"), but nooo... we can't have that. The main character is always right.

Ok but this has actually really surprised me with how much I enjoyed it? Like its serving strong I Know What You Did Last Summer, only way better because its not nearly as ridiculous as that movie truly is. (Don't come for me, I own the movies and have seen them a shameful amount of times. My shit talking has been rightfully earned.)


That said I am over the moon for this right now. Things are getting wildly intense there at the end and I'm very interested in where the story is going to go next.

Una storia che forse non brilla per originalità a livello di trama ma che sicuramente è in grado di coinvolgere (o se non altro di incuriosire) il lettore. L'elemento più interessante sono probabilmente i personaggi, delineati con una consapevolezza che non mi aspettavo da un esordio.
Lo stile grafico invece è inconsistente e incostante, e il disegno buono ma non particolarmente eccezionale.
Curiosa di sapere come si svilupperà la storia.

You don’t need to know anything else. Why is there a dead body? Whose is it?

Five friends killed a man one summer and they’ve been keeping that secret ever since … until someone uncovers the body and begins to blackmail them. Think I Know What You Did Last Summer except with middle schoolers, then add 50 extra awesome points.

Ohmigawd, I fuggin’ loved this and will definitely be continuing on with the series.

I can appreciate the art... and the whole "standing up for friends" and "friends through the hard times" but this... most of this manga seems too out of my comfort zone. It was weird then fine then weird then fine... but I don't know if I can see past the dubious consent and the actual sub-plot of forcing teens to deal with - what they had to deal with...

Don't think I'll be picking up the next volume...

Some parts of it have a lot of "anime trope" pandering, but the story when it got into the real grit of what was happening was interesting. I was getting some "Future Diary" vibes from this one while reading. Plot twists were fantastic though, I will be for sure reading the next book and hope it is less "Anime girl and guy go to festival", and more "We have to handle this horrid situation, now what".

I’m not a huge fan of the art or the unnecessary objectification of female teenagers, but I’m liking the story and the gore so far so I’ll continue with this manga.
