It starts really slowly. The character building is also slow. But soon it gets so interesting! Mostly because I ended up rooting for the characters so well. I guess it's a common thing in manga and anime. They make you just love the characters to the point that you will follow them to any end.

This was a nice surprise.

With a generic name like Demon Slayer I expected the worst. However, this creator obviously loves the 90's, and channels a very 90's manga/anime feel. Similar to when I first began reading Yu Yu Hakusho or Hunter x Hunter, Demon Slayer gives you some fucked up situations but not overly brooding, dark, or moody. Sure, our main hero gets to witness his whole family murdered and now has to take care of his sister who is now a demon, while learning to become a warrior, a demon slayer, and trying his best to survive.

So what I really enjoyed was the fact this is really quick paced. None of it feels filler, all moves at a nice speed, and the fights and such are brutal enough but also pretty flashy. I also enjoyed the characters, especially the dynamic with the sister and the brother. I'm curious where it'll go and the art is good with some great facial expressions. My only negative is it's not something brand new, and doesn't blow you away, but it is solid. A 3.5 out of 5. Will continue.

"Nezuko... don't die. Don't die. Please don't die. I'll definitely save you, so... don't go dying on me. Because your big brother will definitely save you!" [Tanjiro]

After I finally finished watching all the available episodes of the anime I knew I had to read the manga as well. I LOVED the anime, so I was sure that I will love the manga too. Before picking it up I knew already that Demon Slayer manga doesn't have any incredible art style. It's simple. It's easy. And that's a compliment, because it shows that you don't have to be a godly talented artist to make a great work.

"Since long ago human eating oni have come out to prowl at days end." [Saburouji]

I need to compliment the author for his storytelling abilities. I really, really like the way he had introduced his MC, Tanjiro Kamado, and I really, really like the way he had shown us what kind of person he is. Through Tanjiro's family members the reader quickly finds out that Tanjiro is the oldest child in his family and that he's "the man of the house", the person everyone relies on. And through the nearby living villagers we find out that he's well-known and heavily respected by them. Through Tanjiro himself (his thoughts of Saburouji, the man who invited him to spend the night in his house) we realize that he has a kind-hearted nature. And we find out that he heard about the existence of demons, but thought of it just as a tale.

This is where the story really kicks in - the moment Tanjiro comes back home and through the greatest tragedy he realizes the biggest truth - the man-eating oni (or: he demons) do exist.

I'll turn Nezuko back into a human! I'll definitely cure her."
"There is no cure. There is no way to turn an oni back into a human."
"I'll search for one! I'll certainly find a method, so please don't kill her! I'll also find the one who killed my family. I'll take care of everything! So please... Please...! Please stop!"

Demon Slayer is a heartbreaking story. Most of Tanjiro's family gets killed off and one his sisters, Nezuko, miraculously survives, but is turned into a demon. Now Tanjiro must find a way to fix everything. He cannot bring his family back to life, but can save Nezuko. There is no time to get through the trauma. There is no time to properly mourn the loss that he had experienced. Nezuko needs him, so, as the big brother he always was, Tanjiro is determined to do his best for her. It's an enormous burden to carry. An adult would have struggled with it, so what can a teenage boy do? Fortunately he met the right person on his path, who, despite the initial misunderstanding, guides him to find a master that will teach him how to fight demons. After meeting him, Tanjiro begins his training and gets through a bloody selection to become a demon slayer.

"Here comes another cute little fox."

When you think that Tanjiro's tragedy would be the only one that will strike you, think again, because the author will stop at nothing to break your heart further.

I will not dive into the spoiler section, so I will not tell you what happens. All I can say is that the author is very good at creating painful backstories and making the reader feel for the characters, despite not spending much time with them. Tanjiro's the greatest one. It's not a secret that he's my favorite character - and not because his story is the one that we follow as the readers. I love him because of his pure and kind-hearted nature. The guy is the sweetest person of all the anime I have seen. He had went through one of the greatest tragedy a man can go through, but never ever lost his heart. He stood before a demon who fed on humans, had a clear opportunity to kill it and avenge the people who's lives it had taken away, but was overheating his brain trying to find a way how to do it as merciful as possible, so the demon wouldn't suffer. He's an angel, the sweetest guy, the greenest flag ever and needs to be protected at all cost. The same with Nezuko! These two are one of the most adorable beings ever created and I can't explain how much I love the fact that the story is based on their sibling love (I'm such a sucker for family feelings, that's not even funny). Oh, I also have to say that I love the fact that Tanjiro's family members didn't just vanish from the story after they had been killed. I'm such a fan of the way the author is using them in a situation of crisis for Tanjiro to get a grip and fight with all his might.

Anyways, Vol. 1 ends with Tanjiro trying to survive the final selection that will make him a demon slayer. His opponent is a very tough one and the fight is not just a fight for survival - it also became deeply emotional for our MC. Will he win this fight and survive the selection? Maybe we will find the answer in the next volume ☺️

As the first volume to a series, it works very well. It introduces the main protagonists, gives us their origin story, and the gist of the overarching plot. It is simple but effective. Just about appropriate for a story you can enjoy mindlessly.

However, it might a just a generic battle shonen manga, but it doesn't mean that it doesn't have its charms. Nezuko, the girl who was turned into a demon when her most of her family were killed, is as cute as a button, even with those fangs. Tanjiro, the surviving human brother, share an unbreakable bond with his sister, and though it sounded naïve in the context of this story, he will do anything to turn his sister back into a human.

This bond is the theme of this series. The author likes exploring bonds between siblings, and duality of conflicting natures. Tanjiro and Nezuko's bond isn't the only one that will be explored in this story. So very shonen indeed.

I've seen the anime, and it is indeed and visual and auditory feast. However, there's a lot of nuances in the manga that don't carry over to the screen. For example, I've always thought Tanjiro suffered from survivor's guilt. It's pretty subtle but it is implied. Coupled with their sibling bond, that's why Tanjiro will never let go of Nezuko until he's found the cure to her demon nature. It stems from being the only sibling away from home when a demon killed all of his family and infected Nezuko.

There's many ways to enjoy this story in both anime and manga forms that it is understandable why it's very popular.

So far, this feels like an extremely traditional narrative for this genre.
[Edit: I've now read the 2nd volume and found it more interesting.]

We start with our poor but honest and hard-working lad. He is in town selling charcoal to buy food for his family; when he returns home they have been horribly murdered by human-eating demons! Sad. He is saved by a passing demon-slayer, who directs him to a grumpy old master on a mountain who will train him to also slay demons. Cue "We Need a Montage" followed by a couple years of training and some tests. Ends in a cliffhanger.

The most interesting thing was the sister but she gets hardly any page time or dialogue.

Demon Slayer is my favorite anime so it was only a matter of time before I started the manga. This was just as great as the anime (obviously). Tanjiro and Nezuko are major comfort characters for me. I can't wait to read more.

This is a review of the entire series

A pretty simple and straightforward shounen manga, though still fun. And so many of the characters are endearing (tanjiro and nezuko are precious af, still crying over rengoku, akaza turned out lowkey precious in the end too, fuck douma). 3.5 stars

I really enjoyed this manga!! 🤩🤩 I haven't read a ton of manga series so far, I'm only just dipping into them, but this was super entertaining ✨

In Demon Slayer, we follow our mc Tanjiro, whose family is one day murdered by a demon. The only survivor is his younger sister Nezuko- except she is turning into a demon! Determined to save his sister and avenge his family, Tanjiro begins training to become a demon slayer. And the story goes on from there...

There's sm to like about this manga volume! A few things I was a big fan of:

♧ It was SO action-packed and exciting the whole way through! There was a fight scene every few pages, which meant I was very entertained 💜
♧ I really liked Tanjiro as a character. You can see how much he loves his sister and would do anything for her, which I appreciated ✨
♧ The overall storyline was super interesting with a couple twists near the end 🤩
♧ I liked the art style 🙌

Overall, I really enjoyed this and would definitely be interested in continuing the series! 💜💜 If you're looking for an action-packed manga, I would recommend! 🥰🥰

As the title suggests, Demon Slayer is a painfully generic shonen manga without a single interesting take or idea, told in a very clunky haphazard way. There is no sense of continuity or passing of time (literally months could pass between two panels without any sense of character or story progression), the book is just a scattered set of random events that occur out of nowhere and just because. This janky and disjointed style of storytelling also gives the book a bizarre comedic feel despite going for a very serious and somber tone. The art is amateurish and bland, which I guess is fitting with the story. This was an overall terrible read, and I can’t possibly imagine why this series is so popular and highly rated. I guess shonen just sells really well no matter what.

This was so good! It starts off with a boy named Tanjiro who goes to sell Charcoal but late at night when he returns he finds his family slaughtered by demons only his sister survives and so its a tale of a brother wanting to cure his sister of this infection that has taken hold of her and he has to do it but then he faces challenges from a man named Giyu whose a slayer and then he goes under the tutelage of Sakonji Urokodaki and trains under him for a year to become a Slayer too and then a competition happens where a big demon who hates his teacher appears. Its gonna be a big fight.

I like how the manga already connects with you emotionally and establishes that its a brother trying to save his sister and the author does a good job balancing many things and also the stakes in particular. And the art is freaking gorgeous each panel so well laid and drawn feels like a poster and the simplicity of the laughs and those funny anime faces and expressions are so good!

So this review comes from a perspective who has watched the anime first before the manga. Should you read it even if you've already watched Demon Slayer? Is it worth it?

Kimetsu No Yaiba starts great. Volume one sets everything: Tanjirou's mission, expositions about demons and demon slayers, the trainings and final challenges. It is a by-the-book shounen manga that follows all the beats of a tried and tested "coming of age" outline, but done very awesomely by Koyoharu Gotouge.

With the movie and the first season now out, reading the manga is the way to go for fans who wanted to know and binge about this world and Tanjirou's journey, yet I may say that the anime is way better. The way they have handled the storyboards is just an eye pleaser. That is just my opinion though. Yet both media (written and animated) are worth it. It is just a matter therefore of personal choice whether or not you want to collect these volumes.

What is good with the manga though is that it is relatively short and highly collectible. Shelf-fillers would be very much at easy in completing all the volumes in a short while.

Overall, Demon Slayer Vol. 1 is another great manga in the making. It is a bit on the safe side of storytelling, but the way it has been handled and executed, things are looking very, very good.

Two years later, I've decided to redo my review because of the impact this book had on me.

This series is my safe place. I always read/watch it when I'm sad or having a bad day.
No matter how many times I revisit it, it always makes me happy (which is kind of ironic since so many of my fav characters die). I'm glad got to experience the long hard journey with the Kamados and got to laugh, cry and celebrate with these memorable characters. I literally love everybody in this book; Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, Inosuke, Giyu, Shinobu, Kanao, Rengoku, Mitsuri, Uzui, Muichiro...
Seriously, I can go on about this series for days.
It's going to keep me entertained for years.

(Sorry for gushing so much :-/)

Impressive. Interesting plots and characters. But most importantly, I could see the potential of the series, as in being intriguingly enjoyable, funny and *dramatic.🤞

I’d say it was an intriguing first volume. Fast-paced, love it!

Want to read
January 19, 2021

After watching the first episode of the anime I knew I had to have more of this series and I got super happy seeing there's 26 episodes rather than a mere 13.

Sometime in the course of watching episode 2-3 I knew I'd need to read the manga.

That might not seem like much considering this is Goodreads and all we do here is read and talk/think about reading. But if the manga has an anime by the time I want to get into the series, I am much more likely to watch the anime and skip the manga entirely. I'm not even interested in reading the manga for most of my top favorite animes. So for me it's a big deal. Because sure there are times when I'll mark the manga on my tbr, but that doesn't indicate the likelihood of me ever getting to reading it (I've got over 1.5k manga series on my tbr on Myanimelist).

But this one? This is a series I'm kinda desperate for more of.

Also I'm in love with the animation artstyle; it's gorgeous.

Arco: Final Selection

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba es un manga que había captado mi atención hace un tiempo. Entonces subieron el anime en Netflix y lo vi en un día. Simplemente me encantó.

Me agrada.

I'm coming into this one after having gotten into the very, very excellent anime, so I'm kinda bass-ackwards on this one.

That doesn't matter. I know what is to come and the opening volume is pretty standard. Establishes Tanjiro, the kind-hearted boy who loses his whole family to a demon and his sister, Nezuko, who had turned into a demon. The fact that she has never eaten a human and tried to protect him makes her special.

In the meantime, Tanjiro finds a swordmaster and learns to fight and kill demons, all to find a way to save and cure his sister. This is the foundation. It's solid, simple, but everything about this manga is crisp and beautiful.

And because I know it gets wild later, and beyond creative, it's easy to dismiss this humble beginning. But I won't. I can't. It gets so emotional and so gorgeous.

And, I should mention, the anime seems to follow the manga perfectly. :)

Solid. Simple, but everything about

This review will be for the whole series; read at your own risk!

Read 20 volumes

I finally gave in to the hype and read Demon Slayer! It’s actually really good!! Gives me InuYasha vibes; this is going to be a classic anime/manga for future generations. So far I really love it. I like that it’s creepy and violent and I adore Tanjiro’s kindness in the face of demons.

I like this setup; it really does feel like Inuyasha! But in a different way, a good way, really!! I found the spider family arc so so creepy yet so... humanizing? I think everyone's attitude towards demons are going to shift. That's actually really exciting!!

Kyojuro is one of my favorite characters. I mean... they kinda all are but he just... he’s special.

Edit 7/13/21: this series is just so good. I sped through 10 volumes at work this week.

This was pretty cool to read the manga after binging the anime! (A slow binge, but still. LOL!) I found the first two chapters slower then I recalled in the anime, but I still had the same strong feelings of not liking Giyu because of what he says to Tanjiro. I realize he is ultimately helping him, but I still didn't like it. LOL!

Of course this volume has one of my favorite characters and that would be the incredible Sabito! I would LOVEEEEEE to see more of him in this manga! I don't know what it is about him, but he is just amazing. Two chapters of him (and a little bit in a third) is not enough for me!

One thing that I didn't get in the anime is the opening thread that Tanjiro sees. I understand what it does, but I didn't get HOW he suddenly got this ability. I didn't realize that it's because he can SMELL the thread! :o :o :o That was cleared up in the manga and really appreciated that because I just sort of thought it "appeared" because "it just does" when Tanjiro uses concentration breathing.

Ultimately, we get an adorable baby Nezuko and outside of Sabito, this was well worth reading for that alone. <3
