The one thing Garrett Calder and Aurora Anderson have in common is that they absolutely hate each other.
Garrett has the job that Aurora has worked for and wanted for years and it was handed to him on a silver platter, just like everything else in his life. The fact that he manages everything with the most annoyingly handsome smile on his equally annoying, handsome face is just icing on the freaking cake.
Aurora is not only the most beautiful, but the smartest, most infuriating woman Garrett has ever had the misfortune of meeting. Her sharp tongue and inability to be charmed by him makes her somehow more maddening, and she’s never let him get away with a single thing, not for the eight years they’ve worked together.
Garrett and Aurora are pushed into a situation neither of them want to be in— forced to work together for twelve months or risk losing everything. Twelve months where they can’t kill each other. Twelve long months, and only one of them will be left standing at the end. And in the process of surviving it—and each other—they’ll discover that there’s a very fine line between love and hate.
**Garrett is the second standalone in the Bachelors of the Ridge series. It's a romantic comedy with a mild/medium heat level**
Garrett and Rory's story is definitely not what I thought it would be. This is an enemies to lovers story and again, Karla Sorensen knows how to bring all the feelings out.
Garrett feels stuck in his family's business and he wants out. He finally tells Rory and that explains some of his animosity and disinterest. Rory was surprised at his confession since they've worked together for eight years and this is the first time he's really talked to her.
Then...something happens. The outcome changes things for Garrett and Rory and they have to decide how to proceed. Garrett's not handling things very well until Rory lets him have it. After that, a lot of new avenues open up.
Rory's another imperfect character. Raised by a strict military father, she's become quite the introvert. She's lived a certain way for so long that it takes her some time to be comfortable with any change.
Garrett's all too happy to help her though...and it was very sweet.
There are some interesting updates for Cole whose book is next. And I loved when Rory filled Garrett in on Tristan...that was hilarious!
The Bachelor's on the Ridge series is my favorite ongoing companion series right now. I just absolutely LOVE these boys (but seriously, dibs on Tristan) and when I found out Garrett was then next guy to get a story, I was over the moon.
Sorensen caught me off guard with Dylan, book one in the series (FYI - all can be read as a standalone) because she was so damn TALENTED and I felt like I'd found a shiny author diamond in the rough. Just like the first book, Garrett was hilarious, punchy, filled with character depth and I smiled the entire time I read it. I just LOVE that feeling.
That being said, Sorensen added something I was not expecting with this book: HEAT. From the first kiss to the last, the tension and passion between these characters were off the chart!
Aurora has my heart, because she is a SPITFIRE. Those are my favorite types of heroines. She hasn't had it easy and she works hard for everything she has. On top of that, she's got grit - true grit - and she's not afraid to own it.
But then there's Garrett, and boy if anyone would throw Rory off her game, it'd be him. I loved both of their backstories and how they leaned on each other, and I especially appreciated the moments between them where sparks flew (food fight, anyone?!).
Overall, I am yet again impressed with Sorensen's writing style and knack for smart, witty humor. This series is high on my list of TBRs and I can't wait to get the next installment. And just for the record...
I thoroughly enjoyed Garrett! This is the first of Karla Sorensen's books I have read and I think I have another favorite author to add to my list!
Garrett is a fun read with lots of back and forth banter between Garrett and Rory! It's like verbal foreplay that rises in a slow build toward a perfect climax. These two have so much chemistry sparking between them. In the beginning it is hatred for one another, but along the way they begin to understand each other and that understanding grows.
I loved Garrett. I loved that while he hated what he did, he didn't want to disappoint his father, so he stayed in job he hated. His interactions with his friends were great and had me laughing out loud a lot. However, it was his interaction with Rory and his development throughout the book that was the real highlight.
I really didn't understand Rory in the beginning, but as the book progressed, I got a etter understanding into why she was the way she was. She was kind of a hard a*& in the beginning, but you slowly see her softer, more vulnerable side when she is with Garrett.
Great characters and a good plot make for a great book! This is a definite read!
I liked this one slightly more than the previous book of this series as the story made a bit more sense. The non-manwhore H was wonderful, the complete lack of ow/ om drama was great, and the fade to black type intimate scenes were appreciated.
However, what I couldn't stand were the MCs. The H wasn't so bad. I liked his humourous outlook and his carefree attitude, but he did sound really whiny after a while. The fact that he was aware of all his "first world problems" as he called them helped take be edge of the whining, but just by a little.
The h was the real problem for me. Sure, she had her issues and whatnot, but she was so judgy and mean to the H. We only see the tail end of her treatment of him, but it had been going on for eight years. What. The. Heck. Just no. She was awful. No wonder he didn't want to have anything to do with her. She really wasn't a nice person and even after the MCs settled their differences, she overreacted a lot. And borrowed trouble. Let me finish this review before I dock more stars. The writing was engaging enough, but a whiny H and a mean h ruined the story for me.
This book had all the elements that I would normally love, but the heroine was way to defensive and argumentative fo my tastes. I am totally for the strong women female characters in books, because especially in the romance novel world, its important that women are confident and don't take crap, but this heroine was just... mean and rude. I loved the hero though, he genuinely was a nice guy!
I’m being generous with the 3 stars. I’d probably give it 2.5 Stars.
Not as good as the first book in the series (Dylan and Kat).
I liked the hero, Garrett. Like Dylan, he also wasn’t a manwhore. I did NOT like the heroine. I had no idea what he saw in her, other than being attractive with a nice body. She didn’t have a great personality and she wasn’t nice….she was ice cold. She was horrible in the beginning. I almost dnf’d it. She was THAT bad. But I hung in waiting for the author to make her act like a decent human being.
Eventually she became tolerable. That’s about as good as it got. But then she went off near the end over something stupid. I also didn’t like her cousin Mia. I’ll be skipping Michael’s book. No thanks. Not my kind of “hero”.
This is part of a series, but could be read as a stand-alone. But I would skip this one.
2.5 stars rounded up. I liked it better than Dylan's story but it still left me feeling a little...indifferent? I honestly feel like this author's style changed quite a lot between this series and the Washing Wolves/Ward Sisters series.
There was so much to love about this book. The banter was fabulous. Their humor was fantastic and the angst just enough to not become over dramatic. Each of them had emotional issues to deal with and I loved that being together made both of them a better person. I even loved Garrett’s sister and her relationship with her brother, it was like what I have with my own brothers and it felt genuine. Can’t wait for her book, but I’m working in order so Cole is up next.
At first I wasn't sure if the amount of hate between the main characters in this hate-to-love story could ever evolve into love. But somehow it did. There was a moment, I think halfway through the book, that both the hero and the heroine turned a 180 and the chemistry started working out between them. That's when I started enjoying the book. I liked it even more than the first one, Dylan. All the charcters in this story were great, and now I can't wait for the next bachelors to find their happiness, especially Tristan *insert heart eyes emoji" I wish his wasn't the last book in the series, but that just proves the author likes to torment her readers ;) Unfortunately the conflict that appeared later in the book felt forced and weak to me, like the author didn't have a better idea and just threw something in at the last minute. And that kind of put a wet blanket on my excitement about Rory and Garrett's story. Overall it was a good novel with interesting and complex characters. I'm looking forward to the next one!
This is the first book I've read by Karla. I know it's the second book in the series but I still enjoyed it and will go back and read the first one! I adored the characters in the story.
I usually don't care too much for the "office" couples but with all the elements of this story it meshed nicely: Garrett's maturity... the fact that he was well put together and has morals and dreams. Not your typical bachelor story where he's sleeping with everything that breathes.... Aurora works hard and gives it her all. Throw in a little incentive of having to work together for twelve months with constant bickering and banter with that love-hate relationship. The perfect recipe.
Garrett was a sweet, quick, funny, fast-paced read for me. I hope to go back and give this author another try with more of this series.
My rating: 3/5 stars You can read more of my reviews here: https://afterthepages.wordpress.com/ *I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love all of Karla's words. I love this story. I love how smart and funny Garrett is and how strong and steady Rory is. Gah. I just loved this book so, so much.
Enemies to lovers in a workplace between a sunshiny, charming guy, who inherited his job from his father, and a no-nonsense, sharp, gorgeous woman who earned her position through her hard work and talent.
Garrett Calder is discontent with his job working for his father, the CEO. In addition to feeling like his ability to choose a different career was taken from him, his workplace nemesis is one of the most beautiful, and intimidating, women he has ever seen, Aurora Anderson. Rory mentored under the Senior Calder and earned her position in their company with her dedication and intelligence. The two coworkers bicker and fight bringing out the worst in each other. When the two are assigned to work on a project together the two are forced to lay down their prejudices and admit their chemistry. Crisis strikes that changes everything, to include their dynamic with each other, forcing their proximity even more. The tension between the two leads to something both of them did not see coming, but will it be something with a future?
Enemies to Lovers is always a great trope. This one is definitely a mutual animosity hiding mutual attraction that slow burns in a really great way. The pacing of this story is perfect and their problems feel realistic. The sexual tension and chemistry is palpable and there is a certain lightness and fun to this couple that makes for a fun read. The HEA and Epilogue are wonderful. Dylan and Kat from book one are present as well as the rest of the Bachelors setting up the next books in the series.
Closing my eyes so the angry guitar and violent drum beat was the only thing that I could focus on, I couldn’t even bring myself to care that they were practically staging an intervention. I’d barely seen my friends since my dad died. They all came to give their condolences, sent me texts to make sure I was alive, but I hadn’t hung out with them in a solid month. When they had guy’s night, reserved for drinking beer and playing cards, I’d either been working, at the gym, or passing the hell. out in my bed from the effects of the previous two things. But this last argument with Rory? Yeah, the one where I lashed out for no reason because I’m a sensitive little bitch? That sent me spiraling, and I couldn’t pinpoint why. The tickle at the back of my subconscious that was screaming something about Rory being under my skin abruptly stopped when my music shut off. “What the…” I sat up and about fell off the couch when I saw Tristan looming at my feet with a scowl on his face. “How did you get in here?” “Picked the lock,” he deadpanned. “And this felt appropriate to you because?”. “Because Cole and my brother thought you might have accidentally fallen and died or something.” The look on my face was incredulous and he rolled his eyes.
🧮Garrett’s father started and grew the successful financial services business he expects his only son to take over one day. Except Garrett feels like his had no choice in the matter.
🧮Aurora’s estranged from her own family, but Garrett’s father and his partner took her under their wing years ago. She only feels contempt for the guy who doesn’t appreciate what he’s been handed on a platter.
🧮When circumstances force them to work together, they have to fight to get over their differences, but along the way the pair realise that the enemy feelings may just be a mask for something more.
✏️This book is the second in a series and while you could read these out of order, it’s not recommended as the stories are somewhat interlinked. There’s workplace romance that never becomes an issue and isn’t revealed to the other employees or to Garrett’s mother which I expected and which would have added to the plot. This is one of the author’s backlist stories and I feel like you can tell how the writing has changed over time.

My Thoughts Really enjoying this series. Low drama and enjoyable story lines
This was such a great read! I didn't expect it. The first series in the series didn't really give me much and I was thinking that it might be due to not having read the three little words series, which introduces Dylan and his family. But even there it was an up and down, so maybe with this author for me it is a bit more of a bit and miss depending on characters and story line. This one was a hit! I loved the characters, their development as couple and the low suspense, which was exactly what i needed. If you're looking for more drama, don't choose this one, but if funny conversations, heated moments and bone melting feelings is what you are after, then take this story!
Stuck between a rock and a hard place Garrett finds himself hating the woman who is his father's protégé while at the same time lusting after her. So when his father dies unexpectedly he has no choice but to work closely with Rory. Will she continue to feel he is an entitled prince? Or will she finally see him as the determined and hard worker he now chooses to be? There were many levels of pain in this story and Karla Sorenson dealt with them in an true and honest fashion. Not everyone loves what they are doing until they find an inner peace with why they were placed there. Finding love at the same time only makes the deal a little sweeter.
The first book I read from Karla Sorensen is Baking Me Crazy and I love it. I really like the plot, characters and their growth, how they solved their problem, their interaction, it just seems simple and sweet, not overdramatic. I can say the same thing with this book. As I said before, i love enemy to lover trope and this book delivered it excellently, their chemistry are obvious from the start and their banter is fun to read, I love it when a character used sarcasm correctly. Plot wise it was sweet and heartwarming, I would love to read the other characters books.
Garrett was Dylan's friend with the most charisma from the first book. I was happy his book was the second in the series because I wanted to know who would win his heart. I can't decide how I felt about Garrett. On one hand, I really enjoyed this book because Garrett grew up a bit and came into his own. Uptight Aurora balanced out Garrett's goofy personality. On the other hand, I wanted someone more fun for Garrett. This book was so serious and I loved how everything was handled, but I wish it had been more rom-com based on his personality. I wanted to have more fun with him.
Ok, I liked Garret and I liked Aurora, but apart from the fact that his dad dies and leaves him CEO of the company he initially didn’t want it, the other big “problem” was Aurora hearing his misplaced word about work and her job. That’s it. They had absolutely no problem to be together, they liked each other company, they respect it each other and they discover they were in love and made a great team. So I give to starts because after awhile the plot just dragged.

2 1/2 Stars - Enemies to lovers in a work situation isn't my favorite romantic troupe, so this was probably never destined to be my favorite of the series. I like Karla Sorensen, but her earlier books like this just don't seem to have as much depth as the later ones that I have read of hers.
Things That Worked: - Wow, kudos to Garett and Anna's dad, with maintaining his parental influence beyond what one would expect. - I loved that Rory totally saw how Tristan was into Anna, Garrett's sister, bu the had never noticed until she pointed it out.
Things That Didn't Work: - Rory felt a little flat, as the workaholic who didn't have any hobbies or friends outside of her out of state cousin. I didn't get a feel for her personality outside of enjoying work.
One of my favorite things about this author is her slow build in anticipation between the main characters. I love watching it unfold because it's always genuinely felt by the characters and not contrived or forced just for the purpose of moving the storyline.
Omggggg this just drags on and on and on.... how many times did I read about the exact color of the house or his crisp shirt? This isn’t even a slow burn, it’s just plain torture - get on with it!! I gave it two stars instead of one because I liked the idea of Winnie’s to lovers.... got to 70% and just couldn’t make waste another second!!!
Okay, Karla Sorensen is officially a one’s click read for me when her name is on the cover. I love how her stories are about real people with real issues in their lives. Garrett and Aurora are another couple who had some difficulties to get through with each other and the journey was wonderful to take with them. I’m off to read about Cole!
This was so fun - I was really into the hate to love vibe between Rory and Garrett. I did feel some of Rory's reactions to things Garrett said were over the top. Especially after they started dating and she had gotten to know who he was as a person more, it just didn't always sit right with me. But overall this was enjoyable.
I loved every word of Garrett and Rory's story! This writer has a way of just making you feel good while you're reading... I adored Garrett! Fun loving but so loyal, thoughtful, gorgeous. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Love, love, love Garrett!! I wasn’t too sure about him when I read Dylan I definitely thought his character was going to be more arrogant but boy was I wrong. Loved how he thought relationships should be and I loved how they they fell in love. Excited for Cole.
