Orphaned in the brutal Balkans conflict, 13-year-old Josef is forced to flee across the border. Frightened, angry, and deeply traumatized, he is plucked to safety by an Australian uncle he never knew existed. Josef battles with a new language, a strange landscape, and a feisty cousin named Karina. Working at a native animal refuge saves him from desolation, but Josef will need to save the animals when they need him most.
I give this five stars for a teenager book. Covered the difficult topic of the Balkans war without getting specific; and the multiple problems migrants, let alone refugees face. All from the perspective of an approximate twelve year old. The plot had a good pace and I liked how the boys all came together at the end to save the animals from the storm in the sanctuary. The author did a great job of conveying the unique feel of the Aussie bush. I found this book in an op shop for my sons to read one day and I will keep and eye out for more of Diana Chase's novels.

Pretty slow to start which is weird given the subject matter. I would have rated it higher had the whole scene with the wallaby not been so horrible :(
