Strangely difficult yet also an honest portrayal of how peer relationships can affect how we treat others, Forget Me Not puts you in the odd position of defending the protagonist when it isn't clear that we should. Not that he's "bad," but...

This book reminds me of most shonen mangas, because the male hero is.... an anti-hero. His actions are immature, and weak, and he is a complete loser because he is YOUNG, like many people makes mistakes during their youth. The book is dark, and somewhat disturbing but I enjoyed it...

Let’s call this a complicated book. I felt bad for Serizawa, but I kind of didn’t like him that much either. He definitely grows a little through the story, which makes him less onerous to spend time with, but it’s also clear that he’s left a lot of wreckage in his wake over the years.

The central mystery of who the mysterious girl who comes to his aid might be IS a good one and it’s compelling enough that I might put up with another volume of jerk males and poor impulse control.

However, you do have to realize that while there might be a happy ending at the resolution of all this, you’re going to be wading through a lot of melancholia to get there. This is a story about reflecting on the lives you’ve touched, both in the good and bad ways, and that won’t be for everybody.

A nice portrayal of how important communication is between people--and a warning about how easy it can be to mess things up with careless words or actions.

I'm looking forward to reading more of this series.

The cute cover hides the dark, bittersweet tones of this manga. Excellent first volume.

Just read this book because it was a suggested purchase. I thought the premise very cute and found myself wanting to read book 2. I had a hard time following which was the current time vs the flashbacks, but other than that - it is a great manga and will be a great addition to our manga series. Suggested Purchase. Grades 9+ for language and some raunchy moments.

~3.5/5
(Contains light spoilers.)

I thought the description sounded really interesting to me, and yet I still didn’t expect this.

Yusuke, now in college (I think? Or around that age at least), gets distracted while on his bike and gets hit. He finds out that the woman who distracted him also called for the ambulance, and that she’s someone he hurt in his past, but she won't tell him who she is. But there were so many girls he hurt, he doesn’t know who it was. And so we go back in his memory, meeting each girl he hurt in middle and high school, and what happened and why she might be doing this to him now.

We meet a couple of the women in this volume, one girl who he was too embarrassed to be upfront about his feelings with when his classmates teased him. Another foreign girl who he dated, and the breakup was bad from his point-of-view. And finally a teacher, close in age, who he forms a relationship with and who he encourages to be more confident.

This volume took me by surprise, and I didn’t quite expect this. But it was a pleasant surprise. He was a jerk in the first story, and at other times, but he learned. I quite enjoyed this volume, and I look forward to reading the next one.

This is a sweet little manga! I enjoy the characters and the story that is being told. It is a tad predictable right now, but there is a chance that I have it wrong. We will find out when I continue!

[Review for vols. 1-4. Spoilers, obvs.]

The covers are a bit misleading, because they make you think it's going to be super girly. I picked it up because I tend to be impressed with what Kodansha puts out, no matter the subject matter. Plus, I cracked it open and the art reminded me a bit of the stellar A Silent Voice, so I thought I'd give it a shot despite my reservations about the cover art. Inside is an incredibly insightful profile of a young man who fails at relationship after relationship, despite his good intentions towards women and his attempts to treat them respectfully.
Part of his problem is that he tends to idealize women--not quite to the point of objectification, but his use of pornography certainly doesn't help--and consequently freezes up around them to varying degrees with expected misunderstandings following. But the creators do an excellent job of showing us the difficulties he had growing up: a father who left for a mistress and a mother who subsequently became unhinged--and never really revealed her true self to him. It's pretty easy to connect his difficult relationship with his mother to his difficult relationship to women.
It might be tempting to put him in the "white knight" category, but the big difference there is that he doesn't seem interested in anyone else knowing it. He will impetuously rush to the defense of a woman he is close to but rarely ever checks in with her to ask if that's all right. In general, he makes a lot of assumptions about how his actions affect the women around him. This, combined with his low self-esteem, lead him to self-deprecate and inevitably the relationship deteriorates because his focus then turns inward and he loses that connection to what his really partners want or need.
I feel a lot of compassion for Serizawa because I think his heart is in the right place. But he tends to be a bit of a loner, and without sufficient external input, continues to spin on his relationship hamster wheel. Which is unfortunate, because he has an uncanny knack for attracting incredibly attractive women, haha.
I genuinely hope he learns something by the end, because his endless spinning is getting depressing! Most of the book is flashbacks, though, and early on we get an indication that the mystery woman who kicks off Serizawa's reminiscences has also made him think about his patterns in a different way.
I'm in the middle of volume 5, and it's still dealing with one of his past relationships, so there's only a volume and a half left for things to end well! Not that I'm counting on it, since the story has done a remarkable job of creating realistic interactions between Serizawa and his various women. So much so, that it can be heartwrenching, especially in the case of his relationship with Gucci.
Overall, it's an excellent series and I can't recommend it highly enough!

Remembering the pains of troubled love

After main dude Serizawa gets into an accident and is saved by a girl that recognizes him from his past a nagging familiarity overcomes him but he is not exactly sure who the mysterious girl is so his mind wanders into the past where his life crosses paths with certain females. He is not exactly the greatest Casanova leading him to wonder if the one that saved him was wronged by him in the past making him not only the main character of the story but also possibly a villain of sorts though hopefully not deliberately.

All in all the story has a pretty interesting beginning dealing with mystery and potential romance as the past collides with the present. Only time will tell if this fateful meeting will lead to love or perhaps Serizawa will fail once more as his past experiences taught him. I should also mention the art is really nice and although not always likeable Serizawa doesn't seem cruel either making me hope that he doesn't screw up to badly with she who saved him after his accident.

What I loved how it showed that communication is definitely key when it comes to relationships, friendships, just anything in general. I loved the flashback of Yusuke Serizawa in middle school because it shows how he grows up, it was one of my favorite chapters to read. When it came to in high school, I found it more disturbing just because of the experiences he had to go through. His first girlfriend, with loads of physical violence and how his "friends" would prank him (and as well bully). In college, I'm a bit confused because is he really with the teacher or not. Overall, it's not bad and I'm curious to where this leads too in Vol 2. It's also nice to see from the perspective of how it's told years after each of these relationships happened.

When I read this as a younger kid, I did not like it at all. Now that I'm older and more mature, I find myself actually enjoying and understanding the characters and the story. I have to say, though, I really hope the Phone Girl is not the "Sassy Girl", considering that relationship was uncomfortably manipulative and abusive, most of it coming from her end. I don't think I could root for the main character to get together with someone who slaps him around at the slightest provocation.

So I started reading this book at a book store because of the beautiful art on the cover, but I put it back after what he does to Nobita. I finally picked it up from the library again, and I'm not impressed.

Manic Pixie Dream Girls, Tsundere rep, Hot for Teacher vibes, and the Mysterious Ghosts of Girlfriends Past — all in one volume! 🙄 (Thank you, Kodansha, that I spent only 99 cents on this first volume digitally!)

About the stories of a man reminiscing his past relationships and how he made decisions up to the present. A very good read. Completed the whole story and I highly remommend it. The ending is really great how all those past relationships affected his decision in the end.

Is this whole series just him reflecting on all the shitty friends he had and how he was shitty to all the women in his life? My wife described it as the worst version of Mama Mia, but I'm think more Mambo #5.

Not really much to say. I just didn't like it. Serizawa was a jerk to pretty much every girl he met and most of the girls weren't good either. Nobody except the girl in the beginning was nice at all. I didn't like it and I won't be continuing.

I picked this book out based on the cover. Thought it would be a light and sweet read. The polt/story is a lot darker than what it looks! It's still a great read and I enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to reading more of this series :)

This was fun. I like the premise, as well as the fact that it got right into the story, not needing too much introduction.
The graphics are pretty good, I'm excited to see how this continues.
