“Love is the heartbeat of our existence – the essence of humanity. In every life we try to do it better.”
“She doesn’t matter. I don’t want to see her. Hear her. Smell her.”

“In another life, Theodore Reed would make my heart do flips. A part of my soul would gravitate toward his.”
“Sometimes silence holds more meaning than words. And love … it’s infinitely impossible to define, but unequivocally, without any doubt, the reason we are here.”

"Not every day is a parade with fireworks, but every breath counts."

Seeing as I loved J. Ann's One, I gladly dove into this book only to discover it wasn’t nearly as nice nor was it dissimilar to her other books.
The story of Theo Reed and Scarlet Stone was touching, the plot was evocative forcing itself into my mind although it never quite made its way into my heart. Additionally, the prose didn't resonate, lacking a certain depth regardless of the explosive emotions. More than this, the plot lines and themes were varied and bewildering.
From (1) Scarlet, an ex-thief who was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer, to (2) Nolan, a guy who has some paranormal qualities, to (3) Theo, a guy looking to avenge the death/murder/suicide of his parents. The plot focuses on these three, whose lives seem entirely too intertwined.
Scarlet and Nolan meet (on a US-bound flight), right away Nolan agrees to lease a flat to Scarlet (all this was done on the flight) except, the flat was presently occupied by Theo. As the story progresses, it turns out Nolan's parents might be culpable in the death/murder/suicide of Theo's parents. Got that?
Not long after, Scarlet's father, Oscar, upon discovering she had cancer, broke out of a UK prison, traveled to the US, met Nolan's mother and promptly started a relationship with her. Huh?
Altogether, there were too many circular relationships which the author tried but failed to convincingly align. Admittedly, it can't be easy pouring one's heart into a book and with all due respect to Jewel Ann, I think authors sometimes try too hard to tug at our emotions.
Lastly and perhaps the most important are the vignettes of wisdom/life lessons attributed to Scarlet, which prefaced each section. Honestly, they rarely made me laugh nor did they elicit any profound or life-changing thoughts but instead made me dislike Scarlet even more. I had zero cares left.“My name is Scarlet Stone, and I was not put on this earth to judge anyone.”
“My name is Scarlet Stone and kids make fun of my name. I don’t understand what’s wrong with my name”
“My name is Scarlet Stone, and I’m not afraid of death. My mum waits for me with open arms.”
“My name is Scarlet Stone, and I can’t remember ever feeling a connection to normal, well-adjusted people. My reflection has always been in the many faces of dysfunctional souls.”
“My name is Scarlet Stone and the reasoning behind most everything I do is—because I can.”
I tried to love Scarlet and Theo but, the convoluted plot and the poor characterization made reading their story a chore. Entertaining, yes, but a chore nonetheless.

“My name is Scarlet Stone. I was offered useful traits the day I entered this world. I passed on common sense, opting for the-edge-of-a-knife journey.”Scarlet is a delightfully stubborn yet pleasant Brit who comes to Savannah, Georgia, to find peace and purpose in her colorful life. She rents a beach home, and the house happens to come with a roommate/home renovator, Theo. He is an angry, scary, grumpy beast of a man who hates Scarlet on sight. The two roomies aren’t just like oil and water. Scarlet is a match to Theo’s propane, but the fact that they will likely go up in flames doesn’t dampen her fascination with—or attraction to—him.
“There is nothing I want more than to crawl inside of this man and spend eternity piecing together what I have no doubt is an ineffable masterpiece.”The book is aptly named because it was all about Scarlet Stone for me. I freaking adored Scarlet. She’s such a vibrant, compassionate, and complicated character. I didn’t always understand or agree with her decisions, but I thoroughly respected her strength and intelligence, her intense self-reflection, authenticity, and determination to change.

“Life is too short to hold in a single tear, a single laugh, a single breath. Biology is how we exist. Emotions are how we live.”

My name is Scarlet Stone, and I'm drawn to anything out of the ordinary, the crazy, the eccentric.
True miracles don't need to be justified. It's my truth and that's all that matters. I will never need anyone to believe me as long as I'm my own living proof.
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
I question if I truly know anything.
I miss all the things that define the best part of humanity. I don't want my biggest regret to be wasted time
You will be my greatest masterpiece. I will build you with the strongest materials. Nothing will be rushed. Even if it takes a lifetime…every little detail will be perfect.
„I will spend a thousand lifetimes making it up to you.“
While he fucks me, he whispers in my ear over and over, „This…means…nothing.“
I cling to him, because fuck him…I can use him the way he's using me. He's looking for a release, I'm looking for human touch. It's not love, it's not even sex. It's….nothing.

When someone says they will love you forever, what does that really mean? Then again, what really is love? I think that's why we're here. For each of us to discover what love means to us.

Everything between us is a lie. We are nothing and that's how it has to be.
Every kiss.
Every touch.
Every moment of skin to skin in truly stolen breaths.

Theodore Reed doesn't hate me –he hates that he loves me. He hates that I came into his life when I did. Loving me is killing him. We are two wounded creatures suffering from unspeakable pain that has marred the decent people we once were.

Beneath the brute anger, jagged words, and threats, Theodore Reed is a sad man.
It's mad love. The kind that makes no sense. The kind that is bigger that anything I've ever experienced. The kind that ensnares your soul and never lets go.

”And love....it’s infinitely impossible to define, but unequivocally, without a doubt, the reason we are here.
”Remember that letting go takes far more strength than holding on”
”He is unequivocally the love of my life - of every life I will ever have.”
My name is Scarlet Stone, and I'm drawn to anything out of the ordinary, the crazy, the eccentric. I've been this way all my life.
"I am the law."

“The assumption that a good education equates to intelligence is not necessarily true. A lot of highly-educated people have been told what to think, therefore, they think they know it all. The other segment of the population has to figure out how to think, therefore they question everything.”
“Food. Small talk. Maybe I say something that makes you grin. Maybe you say something that makes me giggle. Maybe the food is crap, so we drink too much wine. Maybe the full moon beckons us to the beach where we walk in the shadows of the night. Maybe you tell me something about yourself. Maybe it’s a lie, and maybe that’s okay because we’re both going our separate ways in four months. But maybe … just maybe for one night we feel human.”
“Not every day is a parade with fireworks, but every breath counts. Life is incredibly fucking hard, rarely fair, and always unpredictable. Most days, surviving is as good as it gets.”
There’s nothing I want more than to crawl inside of this man and spend eternity piecing together what I have no doubt is an ineffable masterpiece.
“Please let there be another life. I need a real taste of forever with you. This … this isn’t long enough.”
