“My name is Scarlet Stone, and my biggest fear is that someday I will find what I want most in life, and it will be impossible to steal.”

What happens when life just stops? When one moment makes you question your entire existence?

Scarlet Stone is a third-generation thief who has everything: a doting fiancé, a spacious London flat, and a legitimate job offer. In a single breath, everything becomes nothing, and she finds herself on a plane to Savannah, Georgia in search of the meaning of life.

After securing a six-month lease for a beachfront house on Tybee Island, Scarlet changes the way she looks, thinks, eats—basically her entire outlook on life. She needs peace, but what she gets is a housemate who looks like Thor, acts like a warden, and smells her proximity like a Bloodhound.

Theodore Reed is a carpenter and perfectionist with a body built of steel, a black, hollow heart, and a hunger for revenge. He doesn’t like company, girly-smelling crap, and British accents.

He resents every breath she takes.
She’s fascinated by his every move.

In time, they discover their coexistence is toxic, their physical attraction is electric, the secrets they keep mean the difference between life and death, and the only truth they share is that everything is a lie.

“Over eighty-five percent of the world's population believes in a higher power, yet, very few people believe in miracles.”

4.5 Stars!!

'Scarlet Stone' was gripping, it was fantastically written, it was compelling and enthralling, it was a fantastic read filled with humor, emotion, angst and steam. It was my first read by this author and certainly not my last since I found it to be so very intriguing on so many levels. This story was so different, so much better than I had expected, surprising me in such a good way. I don’t need to read other books by Jewel E. Ann to tell you that she’s a talented storyteller or that she has the unique ability to create engaging character-driven stories. So trust me when I say, you don't want to miss this wonderful story.

“Love is the heartbeat of our existence – the essence of humanity. In every life we try to do it better.”

Scarlet Stone is a woman in her thirties who desperately needs or more exactly wants to change her life. She needs this change and wanting to live a clean and simple live and find some peace and quite, but also find her purpose in life, she moves from London to Savannah. She finds a new rental home in Tybee Island, home she apparently will share with someone.

Scarlett’s new roommate is like anything she had expected a roommate to be. If Theodore Reed didn’t know what hate at first sight means, he just found out when he met the eccentric Brit. He’s grumpy, angry and more than scary and the last thing he wants is to have a roommate, especially since the roommate is Scarlet.

While Scarlet is friendly and tries to get to know Theo, Theo ignores her, trying not to give a sh*t about her. If at first he’s like a beast around her, as time passes he warms up to her…a little. But Theo has important plans, he doesn’t need a distraction and Scarlet with her colorful personality is one in every single way.

“She doesn’t matter. I don’t want to see her. Hear her. Smell her.”

'Scarlet Stone' was suspenseful, mysterious, funny, emotional and sucked me in from the very beginning. An opposite attract/enemies to lovers story, Scarlet and Theo’s journey to find who they are individually and also each other was intriguing, layered and as I said before, fantastically written. To fully enjoy this story, you really must not read too many spoiler-ish reviews, because trust me when I say, you will appreciate these characters’ story at another level this way. The plot here was so well developed and also complex, full with many interesting turns and revelations.

“In another life, Theodore Reed would make my heart do flips. A part of my soul would gravitate toward his.”

Our two main characters were engaging, compelling and so well portrayed. I absolutely loved Scarlet’s vivid portrayal. She was so endearing and even relatable. She was full of life, brave, strong, intelligent, adventurous and so daring. Overall, she was an amazing heroine I loved from the start and enjoyed reading her tumultuous story. Theo was an intriguing character you will want (maybe) to punch in the face at times, but he also was sweet and caring and for sure he will warm your heart at some point. This tortured hero was really interesting, engaging and as strange as it sounds, I enjoyed his rudeness. He was a really entertaining character and I loved finding out his story/background as the story progressed, which btw was done pretty well.

“Sometimes silence holds more meaning than words. And love … it’s infinitely impossible to define, but unequivocally, without any doubt, the reason we are here.”

Mrs. Ann did a great job with the enemies to lovers aspect. The dynamic between the two main characters was entertaining, their relationship being crazy as hell and complicated, but also passionate and captivating. Their bickering was witty and the way they challenged each other at times was simply delightful.

All in all, 'Scarlet Stone' was a wonderful, enthralling read I urge you to read it if you want a well-developed, story about finding yourself and finding love, forgiveness and redemption, second chances at life and second chances at love.

"Not every day is a parade with fireworks, but every breath counts."

Love is a brutal emotion. That’s how I’m certain, beyond a shadow of a doubt, it’s our sole purpose in life. Love is the heartbeat of our existence—the essence of humanity. In every life we try to do it better.

Love is maddening. It robs all reason and leaves us drowning in desperation and fear. Desperate to hold on to everything that makes each breath worth taking. Fearful that the very air that fills our lungs is that love. One cannot live without air. Can one live without love?

Seriously, I have just had my mind blown again by the incomparable writing of Jewel E Ann. She has managed to leave me with feelings of total exhilaration and utter tragic loss within the same breath. I had to put the book on hold only due to the fact I had a number of reviews due last week, and I am so thankful for that because I truly got to savor this story but now I feel so lost. How do I go on after reading such a masterpiece??!! Jewel’s writing is hands-down, EXQUISITE in SCARLET STONE!! I fell in love with her words! I lost count over how many quotes I ended up highlighting! Her words gave me chills. I swear there were so many “feels” being invoked while reading this one. It is definitely on the top of my BEST OF 2016 list!! The story, Heroine, and Hero are what makes this a truly unforgettable read!!

Scarlet Stone is a skilled thief and computer hacker who has given up her life of crime and chosen the straight and narrow path of a law abiding citizen. Her change in direction has a lot to do with the fact that her father is in jail serving a ten-year sentence for a crime that she committed. He took the fall for his beloved daughter. Scarlet is now on a path to discovery. Certain life altering circumstances have her leaving her old life behind in London and searching for answers where it all began for her in Savannah, Georgia. She ends up meeting someone on the plane who has a house on Tybee Island in which a room is available to rent. What her new landlord fails to mention is that she will have to share the house with an incredibly HOT but seriously SURLY man. Scarlet and Theo don’t start off on the best of terms. Theo is anything but cordial towards her and oftentimes he exhibits a very antagonistic scary demeanor towards her.

 photo adf14ec66f042a9d0621f683d563db5d_zps6sabie2h.jpg

Scarlet is not one to be intimidated and so she makes it her mission to break through Theo’s hardcore exterior and soon these two are giving into their animalistic passion for each other. HOLY HELL ladies, Theo is going to set some panties on fire!! It’s obvious these two have white hot chemistry and both go into it knowing there is an expiration date on their time together. Scarlet is only in town for six months and Theo plans on leaving as soon as he finishes renovating the house they are both inhabiting. Unfortunately for the both of them, deep feelings spark and when it’s time to part ways they’ve both left an indelible imprint on each other’s hearts.

”There are no words for what I’ve done to us—to you.” Sorrow deepens in his eyes. ”You will be my greatest masterpiece. I will build you with the strongest materials. Nothing will be rushed. Even if it takes a lifetime…every little detail will be perfect.”

 photo SSteaser3THEME1_zpsracxmrhp.png

There was a side story going along that will impact everything and everyone so dramatically! I mean that just goes to show you how truly brilliant a storyteller Jewel is!!

I normally am all about the Hero when I read my books and Theo is definitely going to be added to my Top Book Boyfriends list, BUT, it is the Heroine that I adored so much!! I loved Scarlet’s ability to love fiercely through adversity and just her kick-ass feisty attitude!!

SCARLET STONE is a true GEM!! There aren’t enough stars to rate this book! If you haven’t gotten to it yet, make sure you bump this to the top of your TBRs!!

*Serious Spoilers. Proceed with caution*

Seeing as I loved J. Ann's One, I gladly dove into this book only to discover it wasn’t nearly as nice nor was it dissimilar to her other books.

The story of Theo Reed and Scarlet Stone was touching, the plot was evocative forcing itself into my mind although it never quite made its way into my heart. Additionally, the prose didn't resonate, lacking a certain depth regardless of the explosive emotions. More than this, the plot lines and themes were varied and bewildering.

From (1) Scarlet, an ex-thief who was recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer, to (2) Nolan, a guy who has some paranormal qualities, to (3) Theo, a guy looking to avenge the death/murder/suicide of his parents. The plot focuses on these three, whose lives seem entirely too intertwined.

Scarlet and Nolan meet (on a US-bound flight), right away Nolan agrees to lease a flat to Scarlet (all this was done on the flight) except, the flat was presently occupied by Theo. As the story progresses, it turns out Nolan's parents might be culpable in the death/murder/suicide of Theo's parents. Got that?

Not long after, Scarlet's father, Oscar, upon discovering she had cancer, broke out of a UK prison, traveled to the US, met Nolan's mother and promptly started a relationship with her. Huh?

Altogether, there were too many circular relationships which the author tried but failed to convincingly align. Admittedly, it can't be easy pouring one's heart into a book and with all due respect to Jewel Ann, I think authors sometimes try too hard to tug at our emotions.

Lastly and perhaps the most important are the vignettes of wisdom/life lessons attributed to Scarlet, which prefaced each section. Honestly, they rarely made me laugh nor did they elicit any profound or life-changing thoughts but instead made me dislike Scarlet even more. I had zero cares left.

“My name is Scarlet Stone, and I was not put on this earth to judge anyone.”

“My name is Scarlet Stone and kids make fun of my name. I don’t understand what’s wrong with my name”

“My name is Scarlet Stone, and I’m not afraid of death. My mum waits for me with open arms.”

“My name is Scarlet Stone, and I can’t remember ever feeling a connection to normal, well-adjusted people. My reflection has always been in the many faces of dysfunctional souls.”

“My name is Scarlet Stone and the reasoning behind most everything I do is—because I can.”

I tried to love Scarlet and Theo but, the convoluted plot and the poor characterization made reading their story a chore. Entertaining, yes, but a chore nonetheless.

Instead of doing a regular review for this book, I felt the urge to just include my many favorite quotes from this story here.

"My name is Scarlet Stone and the reasoning behind most everything I do is-because I can."

"What if every moment was free from expectations and regret? What if we started counting time in breaths instead of seconds? What if I could hold my breath and stop time?"

"Every life matters, but never one more than another. Sometimes silence holds more meaning than words. And love... it's infinitely impossible to define, but unequivocally, without any doubt, the reason we are here."

"You will be my greatest masterpiece. I will build you with the strongest materials. Nothing will be rushed. Even if it takes a lifetime … every little detail will be perfect.”
No human has ever said “I love you” as poetically as Theodore Reed just did.

Wow just Wow! What an amazing ride!!!. :) I LOVED everything about this book…. Actually I can safely say this was one of the best books I ever read. Yep, it was that good!!! <3

Earlier when I first read the blurb, I was expecting something light and fun read but this book literally caught me unguarded because it was just more than that.. There was pain, tears, heart ache, more laughter and amazing chemistry between Scarlet & Theo but most important thing, this book gave me the best hours of my life! Literally I just couldn’t put this book down and my eyes killing me right now but oh fuck it, I won’t give a shit because it was soooo worth it. :)

This book was surprisingly mind blowing good and I’m giving all the stars for this awesome story... <3

I hope you give a shot this wonderful book because OH MY GOD that was one helluva emotional roller coaster. <3

One piece of advice before reading this book: buckle up. Scarlet Stone dished up every conceivable emotion and then completely obliterated my senses. Even when my emotions were tied in knots, I reveled in this spellbinding, original story.
“My name is Scarlet Stone. I was offered useful traits the day I entered this world. I passed on common sense, opting for the-edge-of-a-knife journey.”
Scarlet is a delightfully stubborn yet pleasant Brit who comes to Savannah, Georgia, to find peace and purpose in her colorful life. She rents a beach home, and the house happens to come with a roommate/home renovator, Theo. He is an angry, scary, grumpy beast of a man who hates Scarlet on sight. The two roomies aren’t just like oil and water. Scarlet is a match to Theo’s propane, but the fact that they will likely go up in flames doesn’t dampen her fascination with—or attraction to—him.
“There is nothing I want more than to crawl inside of this man and spend eternity piecing together what I have no doubt is an ineffable masterpiece.”
The book is aptly named because it was all about Scarlet Stone for me. I freaking adored Scarlet. She’s such a vibrant, compassionate, and complicated character. I didn’t always understand or agree with her decisions, but I thoroughly respected her strength and intelligence, her intense self-reflection, authenticity, and determination to change.

Unlike some of her other novels, Jewel E. Ann doesn’t lull the reader with niceties only to be sucker punched. The book as a slight edge to it from the beginning, letting you know that you’re in for an emotional ride. The story challenged me to expand my beliefs and question my morals. At times I feared the plot was taking me down uncomfortable paths that I was reluctant to travel. I was pleasantly surprised by the way in which the unpredictable journey is presented without a looming cloud of depression.

Scarlet Stone is an exquisitely breathtaking and poignant tale of acceptance, letting go, living in the moment, and love. If you’re looking for a unique story with a gripping plot, you should grab this book.

Oh boy this book really didn’t work for me. I read every page and I’m left disliking and never truly connecting to the hero nor heroine. Oscar was the only worthwhile character in this book. The storyline dabbled on the ridiculous side and the are you serious side.

And so in the spirit of the holiday season going to leave it at that.

I love Jewel E. Ann’s books, every one I have read has pulled me in and owned me from start to finish. Scarlett Stone isn’t your typical read, but I fell so in love with this story. From the very beginning I was intrigued and wanting to know about everyone!

Scarlett is a third generation thief and the story begins with her visiting her father in jail in London where she has resided for most of her life. We know he took the fall for a crime she committed and we know she is saying goodbye to him. She then moves to Savannah, her place of birth, and only plans to stay for six months. On the plane overseas she meets Nolan and he offers her a room to rent.

Scarlett arrives and finds her new rental home is on Tybee Island and she will be sharing a room with Theo. Theo is eccentric, closed off, and definitely rough around the edges. He is also handsome and Scarlett is immediately attracted to this beast of a man, but he wants nothing to do with her. Theo is like no character I have ever read and he was one mystery I very excited to crack.

Scarlett is very outgoing and open to forming friendships in her new life, but Theo wants no part of it. I wanted to know more about him and understand his resistance to Scarlett’s kindness. These two’s love/hate relationship was so intriguing and had me hooked. Their chemistry is off the charts and even though Theo doesn’t want friendship from Scarlett he can’t deny their sexual attraction. So what’s starts out purely physical turns into something so much more.

Legit, so much more, but this is the type of story you should go in blind, because it’s just more. It’s more than about Scarlett and Theo. It’s about finding yourself, finding peace and the selflessness and pureness of true friendship. I loved this book, love, love, loved it. I felt like it was absolutely perfect. It had me laughing, crying and dying to read more. It also made me think and had me sharing the plot with my husband this afternoon because I couldn't stop thinking about it. This is just another reason why Jewel E. Ann is an epic writer, must. read. for. sure.

Bravo, this was bloody well done and I insanely loved it. Spectacular and magnificent read.

My name is Scarlet Stone, and I’m drawn to anything out of the ordinary, the crazy, the eccentric. I’ve been this way all my life. Excitement runs through my veins.

My first thoughts after reading the first 15% of this book:

……...Oh my god, this book is hilarious . I certainly wasn't expecting that after the last couple of books that I read by Jewel E Ann...…….. (meaning they were MAJOR angst fests and this is reading like a rom-com with a gritty edge)
i love hearts GIF

At this point I am totally relaxed and enjoying all the craziness that accompanies Scarlet and Theo's initial introduction to each other, needless to say they don't hit it off at all.
How naïve can you get!!!! as the pages progress I am starting to feel like the author was just toying with me before she starts dropping the first of several "bombs" in what ultimately turns out to be a very, deeply emotional and overly-angsty story .

because sure enough just 15% later, my thoughts are:

no.....no...…..no...

this isn't fair...
mountains dropping GIF by South Park

I am totally crushed now......by the reveal of Scarlet's devastating secret and also fully prepared for further torture, for this book to have the worst possible type of outcome and ending for me personally .
However instead, what we get is so much more.....(so hold on tight as it is going to be a wild ride)

off we go come on GIF by True and the Rainbow Kingdom

This book had me going through the whole gamut of emotions and though I nearly had my heart ripped out by both Theo and Scarlet at times I also consider this to be an especially heartwarming story that is woven together with threads of tragedy, hope and humor.
Scarlet Stone herself bowled me over, I was so drawn to this heroine and I loved her "cheeky" side so much.
Theo was definitely no slouch either, such a sexy, tortured hero and my heart ached for him so much.
I feel obligated to point out that the writing in this book is so exquisite and almost poetic at times that I could have highlighted quotes from almost the entire book . This was such a wonderful and truly unforgettable read for me.

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” Wayne Dyer

That was a really refreshing book, something out of the box.

The characters are unique, the story is different and especially the way it is written is really impressive. It is like a poem or a song to your heart. This is one of those “must-read” books and I am happy to have discovered it.

Our heroine, Scarlet Stone, is a third-generation thief, grown up in an unusual family environment. Her dad is Caucasian but her mother was from Caribbean. That is the secret of her milk chocolate tan and wiry black hair.

When I take things that aren’t mine, I don’t leave a trail.

One day, Scarlet decides to leave her fiancé, Daniel, whom she still loves, says goodbye to her father, Oscar, who is in prison for a crime she committed and leaves England to go to Savannah, the city she was born in America. This is where the book starts.

The man she sits next to on the plane, Nolan, makes friends with her and later, he helps her to find a house to rent when they land, but she has to share it with another man. She has no problems with it, so she says yes. But the man living there has huge problems with it; he doesn’t want her there.

Theodore (Theo) or Thor as Scarlet calls him because of his long blonde hair, blue eyes and gigantic figure is immensely disturbed by her presence near him. From the moment he lays eyes on her, he treats her in an incredibly hostile way that I have never ever seen in the books I have read before with the most alpha or as*hole characters.

He’s mastered the you’re-crazy look. It’s possible I’ve helped cultivate its perfection.

***

“If you ever say her name again, I will end you.”
I whisper, “Sorry, I’m afraid there’s a queue.”

***

Are you my salvation or my damnation?

Their interaction, the way he behaves, the way she responds is so captivating that once you start to read this book, you don’t want to eat, sleep or do anything else but turn the pages over and over. The book sucks you deep into its world immediately and it never disappoints.

Slowly, we learn surprising facts about both characters and slowly, we understand why they act the way they act.

Their coexistence in the same house is like a mad war. He is most of the time grumpy, wild and very unpredictable. Scarlet, on the other hand, is one of a kind woman unlike Theo has ever met before and she shatters his walls by her own quirks and unpredictability.

The book is told by both Scarlet and Theo, a dual-point of view kind of writing, which adds a lot to the storytelling. Their mind is like a crazy new world you want to discover more and more.

Listen to her:

My name is Scarlet Stone. I was offered useful traits the day I entered this world. I passed on common sense, opting for the-edge-of-a-knife journey. When I die, I want my gravestone to have the word ‘epic’ on it somewhere.
Epic thief.
Epic daughter.
Epic adventurer.
Epic risk-taker.

***

My name is Scarlet Stone and my biggest fear is that someday I will find what I want most in life and it will be impossible to steal.

***

My name is Scarlet Stone, and I’ve been told I have a fiery personality when it comes to men. Of course, the only people who tell me that are men.

***

My name is Scarlet Stone, and I know the difference between right and wrong. I just haven’t mastered the art of giving a shit about it.

***

My name is Scarlet Stone, and I’m drawn to anything out of the ordinary, the crazy, the eccentric. I’ve been this way all my life. Excitement runs through my veins.

And listen to Theo:

She’s everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
In my head.
On my nerves.
Gnawing at my conscience.
I hope she’s not waiting for me to save her. I’m no one’s savior.

***

If we don’t stop, she could awaken something that cannot be brought to life. Not ever. I hate Nolan for planting her in my world. I hate this life.
I really. Fucking. Hate. This. Life.

As more and more facts are unraveled, the story makes a lot of turns and twists, each of them all the more captivating. And the whole book is a hell of a ride you should all experience.

I do not want to give any spoilers so I will stop here. You need to read their toxic and electric relationship to see if they are each other’s salvation or damnation. Read it, I promise you won’t regret.

Let me confuse you a bit so that you get more curious about what is going on here. And please, do not unhide the spoilers in any reviews you read, let the book surprise you!

“Maybe I can make us dinner. You know … Food. Small talk. Maybe you tell me something about yourself. Maybe it’s a lie, and maybe that’s okay because we’re both going our separate ways in a few months. But maybe … just maybe for one night we feel human.”

***

“Tell me another lie.” I need him to remember what we’ve shared is a lie.

***

There it is. No regrets. I’m counting breaths not seconds. I will no longer waste a single one on something that is not real. No more hiding behind lies and fear... I could die tomorrow, and I can’t imagine taking a single unspoken emotion to my grave.

The only thing worse than living with regret, is dying with regret.

***

“What’s the most valuable thing you’ve ever stolen?”
After several blinks, she whispers, “A life.”

***

“If you speak again. I will put this in your heart.”

He won’t. Theodore Reed doesn’t hate me—he hates that he loves me. He hates that I came into his life when I did. Loving me is killing him. We are two wounded creatures suffering from unspeakable pain that has marred the decent people we once were.

I am his song. He can’t stab his song in the chest!

***

“Hit me. Beat me. Cut me. Rip my fucking world apart if that’s what you need. You want the guns? They’re in my car. Go get them. Load the clips. Shove the barrel down my throat and pull the trigger. But I will not let you bandage my wounds, give me food, or make me drink anything.
I. Will. Not. Live. For. You.”

“Too many memories?” I shake my head and get in the car. As he walks around to the driver’s side, the only thought that goes through my head and my heart is: not enough memories.

***

“Please let there be another life. I need a real taste of forever with you. This … this isn’t long enough.”

***

There’s no way I can wait for another life that we’re not guaranteed, a Heaven that no one has seen, an eternity that I can’t see beyond the horizon in front of me. Now. We have now!

4.25 "Scarlet vs. Theo" stars

Dear God, this was messy, complicated, complex...beyond words...

Hmmm…how to present this story without giving away the crucial parts of the twists tightly intertwined through out the story.

It's such a multi-layered, gripping, emotional story filled with humoresque dialogues, spicy bickering and stunning suspensful twists…

It's a story of the everlasting search for the meaning of life, for the sense, justification, revelation.
My name is Scarlet Stone, and I'm drawn to anything out of the ordinary, the crazy, the eccentric.

True miracles don't need to be justified. It's my truth and that's all that matters. I will never need anyone to believe me as long as I'm my own living proof.

It's a story about finding yourself when you have limited time.
When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

I question if I truly know anything.

It's a story of wanting the change, the chance, the inner and outer struggles, the ups and downs, mistakes, regrets…
I miss all the things that define the best part of humanity. I don't want my biggest regret to be wasted time

It's a story about revenge, forgivness, redemption and second chances.
You will be my greatest masterpiece. I will build you with the strongest materials. Nothing will be rushed. Even if it takes a lifetime…every little detail will be perfect.

„I will spend a thousand lifetimes making it up to you.“

But most of all It's a story about finding love , when all the lines are blurred, when the emotions are gulped in complex hateful actions,
While he fucks me, he whispers in my ear over and over, „This…means…nothing.“

I cling to him, because fuck him…I can use him the way he's using me. He's looking for a release, I'm looking for human touch. It's not love, it's not even sex. It's….nothing.

When someone says they will love you forever, what does that really mean? Then again, what really is love? I think that's why we're here. For each of us to discover what love means to us.

Everything between us is a lie. We are nothing and that's how it has to be.
Every kiss.
Every touch.
Every moment of skin to skin in truly stolen breaths.

it's crazy, it's consuming, it's the most complicated and complex notion of having those feels, it's overbearing and pulsatingly powerful HATE-LOVE relationship.

Theodore Reed doesn't hate me –he hates that he loves me. He hates that I came into his life when I did. Loving me is killing him. We are two wounded creatures suffering from unspeakable pain that has marred the decent people we once were.

It's a suspensful drama with twists in an unraveling plot that will stun you and make you go „hmmm“ and „opa“, then „shit“, „no way“, then „I fuckin knew it“ before you settle down with the notion that they all came through on this rucus of a journey, and they've reached the ending…of the story.

My first book by Jewel E. Ann and I'm glad my 2/3 and 3/3 of The Sirens talked me into reading it, cause I will most definitely be looking into some other of Ms. Ann's work.
I did find the begining a bit awkwardly and abruptly intense considering the (anti)hero - Theodore Reed 's actions towards the heroine – Scarlet Stone when they first meet and I didn't like him much. LOL nor have I connected with them at the time, it seemed rushed and pushy to me but then as the story revolves you see them unravel layer by layer, you see Theo in his true light but you also see him in his darkest moments
Beneath the brute anger, jagged words, and threats, Theodore Reed is a sad man.

and then you realize how hard would be to love him and then you admire the inner strength of Scarlet as she fights against the shitty cards she was dealt, she breaks down, then picks herself up again while fighting for her life, she fights for her love and her own happy ending in the dark, as she's trying to define the true nature of hate/lust/love in this peculiar and unconventional relationship.
It's mad love. The kind that makes no sense. The kind that is bigger that anything I've ever experienced. The kind that ensnares your soul and never lets go.

The Sirens together again BR- ing this gem!

Scarlet Stone is a thirty-something Londoner who is fleeing from her old life as a con woman in England, to a new one in Tybee Island, Georgia. She changes her whole outlook on life, she wants to live a clean and simple life, enjoying all the little things.

Her flatmate is a huge man called Theodore Reed, who appears to hate Scarlet on sight, he hates her posh voice and her sudden appearance in his life. He is set on a revenge plan to help him get over the death of a loved one, and Scarlet is messing with his mind.

They fascinate each other, but they can't be together because they are both keeping secrets that prevent them from giving into their feelings.

I adored both of these characters, they were polar opposites but fit together so well. I loved all the many facets to the story, the secrets, the emotions, the humour, and the deep and soul-wrenching love that comes when two people go on a journey together.

This was a beautiful story that I will remember for a long time to come, a well deserved five stars all round.

Wow! I wish I could be more articulate than this right now, but WOW! I loved, loved, loved this book. And was so surprised. I've quickly become a serious fan of Jewel's and while I was looking forward to this story, it's not what I expected.

I won't go into the story because, truly, you need to experience this blind. Don't read the blurb, just dive right in. It's such a beautiful story. The emotions are palpable, chaotic and so real.

Both Scarlet and Theo are so different, so bigger than life, but also so relatable to the reader. I dare you not to fall in love with both of them. Deeply, madly, irrevocably. It's books like this one why I love reading!

The end of 2016 is near and this one is going on my favourites list for the year. I can tell it's one of those stories that will hit me when I least expect it. Come back to me in moments of reflection, the feelings washing over me and making me relive this again and again.

A MUST READ!

76% DNF

God it pains me to do this. I hardly DNF books, but I just couldn’t.

First off, I love the Jack and Jill series like mad. I love the angst, the tension the crazy romance and love.

I went into Scarlet Stone with an open mind. I didn’t read the blurb except that she is British and she’s the thief. I have a thing for British main characters.

The thing that really killed it for me was the connection. I couldn’t connect with the characters for the life of me. I’ve read the reviews and I know A LOT of people loved this one so I gave this book all I had.

I started the book a few times and kept on going back to it, thinking I was missing something. I even messaged several of my blogger friends that loved this book to help me pull through.

I felt like I was struggling from the beginning and that should have been a clear sign to call it. I will admit this book feels like it’s written differently from the Jack and Jill series and maybe that’s my issue.

Below are the spoilers to why it didn’t work out for me

Jewel E. Ann has done it again. I loved her previous book One and with every book of hers, I have high expectations when she releases something new. Scarlet Stone is another strong and powerful story from Jewel E. Ann. I simply loved the main character Scarlet. It's not every book that I feel a love and connection towards the main female character but here I fell in love with Scarlet. Wholeheartedly! She was a fierce, honest and funny as hell British woman with some outstanding skills as a thief and anecdotes. She loved her father Oscar who adored his daughter and he would do literally anything for her. Their relationship was heartwarming and at times hilarious.

The story has a great mixture of humor, sentimentality and sensuality. The themes really struck a chord with me because of the human aspect of the story. I really didn't know what to expect and where it took Scarlet but once I reached two chapters I was a goner. The story was different, so was Scarlet and her current circumstances took me by surprise. It only made the story more alluring and intriguing. The same can be said about a certain man named Theodore Reed. He was a mystery at first. His moody and angry personality created some very funny scenes with Scarlet who wasn't afraid of him at all to begin with. On the contrary, she was having the time of her life. For the first time in a long time. Theodore and Scarlet were insanely hot and so good together. They challenged each other. Made them prioritize and reevaluate life. But there was a reason Theodore came of as angry and closed off. He definitely had his secrets and of course being a thief only got Scarlet into trouble. Not only with him but with the other intriguing characters.

Every character was layered, well developed and important to the story. Scarlet's journey was about a soul searching for its mate, for love and yet so much more. I was mesmerized and filled with so many emotions ranging from sad to ecstatically happy. Her search wasn't only for love but also for change and growth. Let me tell you all, Scarlet definitely succeeded with both.
Jewel E. Ann's prose has never been better. Flawless. My expectations have been met and Scarlet Stone is not to be missed. Fantastic and unique.

”And love....it’s infinitely impossible to define, but unequivocally, without a doubt, the reason we are here.

Loved this book so hard! Thanks so much bestie Nazanin for the rec you know how much I needed this!

This story was so different and refreshing I loved scarlet she’s was a straight forward h, I loved that she embraced who she was and her upbringing. The endless love she had for her dad and my favorite thing about her, was her sarcastic humor. The H Theo oh man! he was standoffish and mean but Scarlet knew how to handle him and he did have his good reasons.

”Remember that letting go takes far more strength than holding on”

This book turned out to be more than romance between Scarlet and Theo. It’s the story of second chances, at love, life, of letting go of the hate of choosing to forgive. ♥️

”He is unequivocally the love of my life - of every life I will ever have.”

My name is Scarlet Stone, and I'm drawn to anything out of the ordinary, the crazy, the eccentric. I've been this way all my life.

It's no surprise that Scarlet Stone was a sure hit for me. Everything shines for me with Jewel E. Ann. She has this innate ability to soften my little heart up with endearing, likable characters, humor, and relatable plots. And then often-times than not, stomp on it while it's all warm and soft!

But I digress...

Scarlet Stone is one of those characters I can't help but attach to. She's like one giant onion with so many layers. A third generation thief (don't worry- this book isn't about being an outlaw), Scarlet leaves her life in England behind to move to her birthplace, Savannah, Georgia. She thinks she's majorly lucked out when the guy next to her on the flight has an opening for his rental on Tybee Island. Huge stress of her shoulders, beautiful beach house, what can go wrong?

Until she meets her new "roommate"...

Theodore Reed doesn't 'do' roommates. In fact, he doesn't much 'do' human interaction at all. He's clipped, brooding, and aloof. And Scarlet is the absolute bane of his existence. He has four words for this all-kinds of crazy, 'funny-talking' chick,

"I am the law."

Scarlet Stone steals the show here. She's endearingly quirky funny yet deep down she's got a sadness that makes you want to laugh then cry for her. She's got a hard shell making the world think she's indestructible but she's sensitive and soft at her core.

Jewel E Ann constructs characters like no other. The way she instills humor with an equal side of heart makes me attach to them as if I know them personally and their battle is my battle. I always seem to have this goofy grin on my face while reading her stories- but I do believe that's to soften me up for the sucker-punch blow to my heart she's sure to inflict. I can almost hear her inner monologue as she writes, "soften them up before you go for the emotional kill." I think she's a closet sadist. And I keep coming back for more. And I will continue to come back...

Scarlet Stone is a great story for fans of an emotional rollercoaster ride- chock full of humor, steam, angsty emotion, and endearing characters. Nothing is simple here and she will take you on a true journey for a young woman named Scarlet Stone. So pack the tissues. You'll need them for laughing and crying. But in the end, I assure you that you'll close these pages with a warm and happy heart. ❤️

Well done...

"If this life-this moment-is a lie, then the truth will never matter to me."

This is the second book I read by Jewel E. Ann, One was the first book and it really impressed me. So I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. I pretty much went in blind and the only expectations I had were that this book would be unique with very intriguing characters. The author did not disappoint at all. This book was amazing and I just couldn't get enough. All the characters were so great and made this story phenomenal.

Scarlet is my spirit animal, I want to be her when I grow up. I could really identify with her and understood why she did certain things. She is fun, badass, independent but also very caring and sweet. She is one of my all time favorite female characters. As for Theo, he is one of my favorite book boyfriends of 2016! He was so rough around the edges, ultimate alpha male, is angry at the world but also very protective. He was such a complex character and it was hard to figure him out in the beginning. He is not your average boy next door or cocky bad boy book boyfriend, he is one of a kind! There was so much going on in this book and it fit perfectly together. There were a couple of very difficult and heartbreaking scenes and I couldn't contain my tears. Scarlet's father Oscar was also one of my favorite characters in this book, and I want to know more about him.

You have never read a book like this one. It was so unique and amazing. I was hooked and I didn't want it to end. Nowadays it is very difficult to find books that have original/not-done-yet storylines, but Jewel E. Ann is one of the authors that always come up with the most out of the box storylines. I highly recommend you to give this book a try, because you won't be disappointed. It is emotional, funny, inspiring and uplifting. Nothing is as it seems. I hope you guys fall in love with the characters as much as I did.

There’re a few things I learned right from my first Jewel read. First, her blurb always has the right hook; at least, for me. Second, her blurb only touches the surface of the story, in a good way. Third, expect the unexpected with her characters….

In Scarlet Stone, I got all of the above, as usual. And with what this book took on, what I got is one exquisite read… At this point, I cannot be any more in love with this book… SIGH…I just know my review will not do this book or how I feel about this justice. It's taken me a long time to begin with writing this, just because... SIGH...

From the first few lines, I knew I was gonna be in for one distinctive ride. Immediately, I wanted to know Scarlet’s story. Scarlet moved far away from home to… hmmm… to escape? To search? To discover? To learn? And as soon as she got there, she meets these interesting people and most interesting of all is Theo. Immediately, there's this caustic energy between them that manifested in the most electric way.

As the story opens up, you learn Scarlet's true purpose. Theo was the unexpected "monkey wrench" in Scarlet's plan...

This is really best read by just diving in. I feel like if I keep talking about the story itself, I'd give it all away bec I won't be able to help myself and I'll just keep going. So I'll just say this. All along, what I really can't shake off is how this story moved me. From Scarlet's journey to Theo's pain to this bond that formed between them. Practically every other line causes pause for contemplation.

Scarlet will definitely go down in my reading history as a top fave h. Everything about her quietly screams strength. It's the kind of strength I know I would aspire to possess should I find myself in any tough situation. Her pragmatic approach is spiritual on its own, if that makes sense. And more so, as typical with Jewel's h, she's quirky and hilarious, appropriately non-apologetic. As far as I'm concerned, she alone gets all the stars I can give.

Theo was easy and difficult to love all at once, the kind of H you want to hug and punch at the same time, then hug again. It's frustrating and endearing how much he fought Scarlet off. Despite his gruffness, you get a sense of a man who feels quite a lot. I think Scarlet made him shine and in doing so, I fell just as hard for this broken man.

The story took turns that I didn't expect. At first, I thought it was going to distract me from Scarlet and Theo's story, but eventually, I understood. It's a story about love, no matter what the future holds. By the end of the journey, there was the love a parent has for a child, the love a child has for a parent(s), there was the love that's true but not meant to be, and then there was the love that was meant to be regardless of anything and the love that you know can and will transcend time.

I want to say that this is unlike any of Jewel's books, but then again, every one of her books is really unlike the one before... I truly feel Jewel's books are like hidden gems that really shouldn't stay hidden. That's just not right. So if it's still not clear at this point, I highly recommend this.

Mhm, this is kind of...off. I mean, it's totally off. Characterization? Plot? Development? Consistency? Aaaand yes, I'm sure every girl would be helplessly attracted to an aggressive and antisocial Thor look-alike, because good looks are everything, right?
As you can easily infer, this means the titular protagonist is hell-bent on a round of The Masochism Tango.

“You’re fucking driving me insane,” he growls into my neck.
No. He was insane before me. However, I’ll wait a bit to make that case.

No matter her reasons, or the interesting premise of two (and more, because exaggeration) very dysfunctional, broken and flawed characters confronting lies and truths, I had a difficult time buying their tale. The author is also very vocal about her opinions on certain topics. I respect those, but not the heavy-handedness of the message.

"Does it matter? No. It’s just my opinion and it only should matter to me".

Talk about forewarning.

At least there are a few humorous situations and the book does provide some thought-provoking themes; unfortunately I wasn't particularly inspired by Scarlet's answers and the focus is too wide, in fact, there are so many things going on in the story, including a mystery, that you can plainly see the hand of the author orchestrating and steering them all (because miracles). I understand it was either that or completely lose the plot, but it’s aggravating.

I thought this was a contemporary romance with dark undertones, not a neurotic contemporary romance which takes itself too seriously and strives to fit in the Biography, Business, Chick Lit, Cookbooks, Crime, Medical, Mystery, Nonfiction, Paranormal, Philosophy, Psychology, Self Help and Spirituality library shelves.

The ending was okay, thought it was predictably neat and contrived. Undeniably, the book has its moments, but not enough to get me over the fuzzy storytelling, the food-for-thought overload and the flat characters.

Not all necessary things in life reside on the right side of the law.

FIVE AMAZING STARS*****

(This book was a gift from my gorgeous Bestie Patty)

I'm going to steal a phrase from this very book to describe it; Reading Scarlet Stone was the ride of a lifetime in every way.

 photo FE50F92F-6A65-46AF-AD50-899EA8B503A2_zpszu4dwiyd.jpg

I'm going to give nothing away. This book was so unpredictable and the thrill of it was that I never knew what was going to happen. Twist after twist, my blood rushing thru my veins, palms sweating and my heart felt like beating out of my chest. This book was a perfect combination of amazing characters, and a bold and beautifully written plot.

Perfection...

Scarlet Stone is a very strong heroine and surprisingly so, her flaws and vulnerability were her biggest strengths. She loved, hate, lived and accepted death, all with the same passion. Her love interest Theodore Reed was equally strong and weak in every way as Scarlet was. Their love was fire and ice, life and death and everything else in between.

Everything about this book was magical and exhilarating, decadent and devastating.

This story is an absolute MUST READ. Prepare for a passionate punch to the heart that you will never forget.

I feel like I highlighted 90% of the book and I wanted to share some of the quotes that will stay imprinted in my heart forever.

"It was a lie. But at some point that lie became my greatest truth."

"Theodore Reed is the ride of a lifetime in every way."

"Are you my salvation or my damnation?"

"Letting go takes far more strength than holding on."

I wish my name was Scarlet Stone ⭐️

As my friend Isabella would say, bloody hell , what an amazing book!
Second in a row for me by this author, I’m simply blown away by the magnitude of this story.
There’s this Scarlet Stone, a third-generation thief who leaves all her life behind in UK, moving to US to die. She has terminal cancer and was given six months to live, so she decided to find the meaning of life in that small amount of time, way across the ocean.
Only life is funny sometimes and miracles can happen. I’ve always felt like we all have a preset way in life and no matter what we do, things are supposed to happen in a way that’s beyond our control.
This story is a good example for my theory.

I’ve highlighted at least twenty paragraphs and there were many other I’m sure I missed, just because I was too engrossed in the action to do anything else besides turning pages.
Here’s a glimpse of what you should expect:

“The assumption that a good education equates to intelligence is not necessarily true. A lot of highly-educated people have been told what to think, therefore, they think they know it all. The other segment of the population has to figure out how to think, therefore they question everything.”

“Food. Small talk. Maybe I say something that makes you grin. Maybe you say something that makes me giggle. Maybe the food is crap, so we drink too much wine. Maybe the full moon beckons us to the beach where we walk in the shadows of the night. Maybe you tell me something about yourself. Maybe it’s a lie, and maybe that’s okay because we’re both going our separate ways in four months. But maybe … just maybe for one night we feel human.”

“Not every day is a parade with fireworks, but every breath counts. Life is incredibly fucking hard, rarely fair, and always unpredictable. Most days, surviving is as good as it gets.”

Jewel Ann wrote her own review and she said:
“READ THIS BOOK!

I challenge you to read this book. I challenge you to step outside of your box.
Question the norm.
Question how you live.
Question your very existence.
Question what love really means.
I challenge you to respect freedom of choice.
I challenge you to question your breaking point.
I challenge you to count time in breaths.
I challenge you to live.”

There are isn’t anything else left to say. It’s an emotional rollercoaster you have to enjoy by yourself. It’s a humorous, intelligent story that you will appreciate. It’s a life lesson you’ll treasure forever. That’s it. ❤️

Scarlet Stone is a must read! It's an emotional roller coaster filled with humor and romance. A one of a kind story that will have you hooked.

"My name is Scarlet Stone, and I am a third-generation thief."

When Scarlet leaves London, she leaves behind her fiance and lifestyle looking to find her purpose in life. No more computers, tablets, or phones. No more hacking and stealing. She will just follow her curiosity and allow her days to flow freely.

Scarlet ends up living with a grouchy roommate near the beach in Savannah. She finds peace and zen, but her roommate is always in the back of her mind. There's just something about him that she recognizes. Pain.

Theodore Reed wants revenge. He doesn't want anything else in his life. No relationship. No commitments. But Scarlet's curiosity and bravery has a way of breaking down some deep walls.

Their relationship isn't normal. Sometimes it's physically brutal, and sometimes it's pure bliss. Funny and sad. I absolutely loved them, and I'm so sad this book is now over for me.

My favorite thing about all of Jewel E. Ann's books are the characters. They are always unique with some odd endearing habit. Even though they have flaws, they are so easy to love. Jewel E. Ann will always be one of my favorite authors. She knows how to write an addictive story that you'll want to reread. If you have never read one of her books... please please please start now!

I really wanted to love this book but I couldn't even get past the first half😩 The story went in totally different direction than I thought. I thought this was going to be about some kickass h with action, mystery but the first half was depressing af and I hate reading about terminal ilnesses in books( i know i'm a med student but that's literally what i'm reading all day and don't want that in my fictional characters lives)😭 Also I couldn't connect with the MCs at all. They had purely sexual relationship, the h just got out of an engagement with her bf for 7 ys and she fell in love the H almost right away🙄  there wasn't any build up so that was so not belivable at all. Maybe the second part is better but I can't make myself to go through all of this🙄

SO DARN GOOD. Sometimes a tad melodramatic. BUT.SO.DARN.GOOD
Writing was flawless, twist was unbelievably good and the romance... the romance was utterly breathtaking. I just did not see the book going the way it did and for that, i applaud you dear author.
Although I did not see the point of Daniel in this story nor appreciated the insta-love of both Scarlet and then Oscar, i still think this book was near- perfect.

I especially loved the author's take on the naturopathic side of health and illness- she makes some valid points and most times, we have to make that life changing decision of choosing between western medicine and all things natural. Each to their own.

My favourite quote and something i might tell myself everyday:

I loved and hated this story and these characters SO MUCH and even here, at the end, I'm not really sure how I feel. Between wanting to yank out my hair, desperately holding onto my kindle so that it wouldn't end up smashed against the wall. yelling out loud at these people as if they were real or would really listen, and crying freaking tears, I'm exhausted. And that's how you know how incredibly talented Jewel E. Ann is. She made me go through what felt like a battle and I'm experiencing some strange form of euphoria. I'm not sure if it's because of how interesting the journey was or because I actually made it to the end in one piece, but I feel extremely triumphant!

However, I had some real issues with these characters. Serious issues.
✳ Scarlet was too damn nosey. Why did she find it necessary to be in everyone's business, but she wasn't honest herself? This aggravated me to no end
There’s nothing I want more than to crawl inside of this man and spend eternity piecing together what I have no doubt is an ineffable masterpiece.

✳ I don't care how deep a man's emotions run, if he constantly tells you what you share means nothing and that YOU are nothing, why are you still willing to give him everything?
✳ When a man sits idly by when you hold a gun to your head and pull the trigger, regardless of the fact that he knows that the gun isn't loaded, YOU believe it is... he is not the man for you
✳ When a man constantly accosts you, physically intimidates you, verbally abuses you... he is not the man for you
✳ If you find yourself tied to a chair, peeing your pants, all while he does his usual of degrading you, and then puts a knife to your throat and cuts your back... he is not the man for you
✳ But then again, Scarlet wasn't the woman for him either. These two were a PBS special on toxicity and while it was hella entertaining to read, it was equally disturbing.
✳ I'm still trying to figure out why Nolan played a big yet insignificant part in this story 😕😕😕
✳ And why was everyone tied together by less than six degrees of separation? While I enjoyed the part Oscar played in this story, I could have done without him falling in love. He should have just continued being there for emotional support and comic relief.
✳ Is it weird that despite how awful Theo was, I still fell in love with him? Maybe that's more about how twisted I am than anything else. He really was terrible though 😂🤣 and I loved every minute of it!! Well, he did have some sweet moments...
“Please let there be another life. I need a real taste of forever with you. This … this isn’t long enough.”

So, in conclusion, this was an awesome story about a girl who was trying to find the meaning of life, of her life, and found her meaning in a man. What else is new? But the ride people... the ride ... addictive and entertaining and I highly recommend it!
