James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.
James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full- time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast. It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.
James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time. James is humbled every day by the success that this groovy blue cat has brought him. He says positively affecting children’s lives is his number one priority, and he is grateful to have such an amazing audience to work for.
Waffles between 2 & 3 stars but having lift the flaps and the fact that one of my kiddos really enjoyed it bumped it to three. But, for real, Pete, a flower isn’t spooky at all... 😂
Oh wow that sucked. We'll stick to the YouTube vid of "White Shoes" instead, I think. (Why was this battered, missing flaps Halloween book in the front of the library's picture book tubs in July?! Because of course it got picked...)
Dean, James. Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete. Harper Festival, 2017. $6.99. Content: G. PICTURE BOOK. Pete the Cat is ready to trick or treat, he has his superhero costume on. He’s a little scared, but his dad says not worry, that they have a flashlight. So, when they see a spooky shadow, they shine the flashlight and it’s only an owl. The scary shape in the yard is just a scarecrow. The glowing faces are just jack-o-lanterns. And the ghost is really grandma. Happy Halloween!
This story is perfect for a lift-the-flap book. Every time Pete thinks something is scary, they shine the light on it (lift-the-flap) and see that there is no reason to be scared. A great way to help children understand that Halloween decorations and costumes are just for fun and they don’t have to be scared of them.
Cute - a nice story for kids who might be a little bit nervous trick-or-treating on their first Halloween (where they're old enough to realize it's supposed to be "spooky"). The repetition doesn't get too old, and the bit with using the flashlight to see what something *really* is works - even though it's sort of cheating!
Alas, I can't imagine this lift-the-flap book is going to last too long in my library.
My problem with this book is not with the story itself. I think this is a great book to read to a child to help prepare them for trick-or-treat. The problem with this book is how poorly designed the flaps are. This book is too delicate for many children of an age to benefit from this book. Be especially careful if you have younger siblings that may get their hands on this book. It's a shame really because it is a fun read.
This is a lift-the-flap book with nice illustrations. This time Pete goes trick or treating and worries every little thing is going to be too spooky. This is a cute book for younger kids. It would be a fun read-aloud with a chance for kids to guess the thing that is so spooky that is hiding under the flap. Recommended for Gr. K-2
I usually love Pete the Cat and action flap books but this one was kind of meh for me. I think if this is your first Pete book you might want to try the white shoes one instead because it is more exciting. -- Sagan (6)
If I was going to get a Halloween-themed Pete the Cat book, I would rather have the "Five Little Pumpkins" one. In "Trick or Pete" Pete knocks on a bunch of doors and hopes things aren't too scary on Halloween. It feels long and boring to me, but for lift-the-flap lovers it might be favored.
Cute story about Pete the Cat going Trick or Treating with his Dad and they have a flashlight. You lift the flap to see what the flashlight reveals while on their journey. Illustrations are very cute and go well with the storyline.
Pete and his friends go out trick or treating and visit the whole neighborhood! I loved that this was a peak a boo paperback book - there were surprises on each page. Of course, it's told in classic Pete the Cat rhyme and rhythm. Love the colors and Halloween fun vibes.
Pete the Cat takes us on a reassuring Halloween walk trick-or-treating with his father and friends. Colorful and with flaps, this is a good introduction for young children.
The book that I chose to do my read aloud lesson as well as include in my authors study was “Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete”. “Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete” by James Dean is a very good children’s book that explains Pete the Cat’s adventure on Halloween where he goes out at night for a tradition known as trick or treating. Along the way Pete meets up with his best friends and goes trick or treating, visiting many different houses including family, friends, and known locals such as the crossing guard while encountering spooky but fun surprises along the way. Personally, I would give this book a five out of five rating as I believe the “Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete” by James Dean emphasizes the themes of tradition, communication, friendship, bravery and even excitement of the holidays, specifically Halloween. With Halloween being my favorite Holiday and Fall being my favorite season I love diving into anything spooky to get into the festive spirit of Fall and Halloween. So, if you too love spooky books even those that are meant for children I would highly recommend getting your hands on “Pete the Cat: Trick or Pete” to either read individually or read to those around you!
This is my favorite Pete the Cat book so far! I'm definitely into mental health books for little ones and this one is perfect for helping get through Halloween. Pete's father accompanies him to each house and they process each of the scary things with lift-up flaps (I still love to do this). As it turns out, Pete knows all the people he visits and gets through all the scariness with the help of his friends and family.
Just in time for Halloween trick-or-treating fun, Pete and his father walk around their neighborhood despite all the potential spookiness that may be lurking...and they find a sweet treat instead! This lift-the-flap book is perfect for teaching children that such a fabulous night of fun doesn't have to be scary.
