Some 80% of people who visit National Trust properties do so "to look at the garden". And the glories of NT gardens include their incredible beds and borders—plants that bring color, drama and surprises year round. In this book, a senior NT gardener gives you a foolproof plan to get similar effects in your own garden with 100 key plants. How to plan, how to plant, how to prune. All of the plants will be easily available, and he will give alternatives if you want to mix things up. The book is organized seasonally, with features on important skills and tasks for each season—such as testing your soil, planting bulbs, pruning for winter and so on.
Simon is an author having written over 30 gardening books, and contributes to national gardening magazines and newspapers. He has also featured as a TV presenter and on radio. He was previously Garden Manager for both RHS and National Trust. He was also a BBC producer.
Interesting book, but not as practical as I'd have liked. It would have been helpful to have had more information about growing the plants and a more precise description – things like the height and spread which could be expected.
The title says it all! It is full of solid recommendations to pick and choose from to add to a garden. There are alternatives for most of the 100 plants. There are some basic care instructions, specific seasonal suggestions, plus general garden design ideas.
