I received Keepers by Kenechi Udogu in exchange for an honest review. I have given this book four out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The last book in The Mentalist Series had me hooked from the very first chapter! I normally love the third book in a trilogy as it's when all of the action comes together and that's exactly what this book had to offer!
Throughout Keepers, the book is written from both perspectives of Gemma and Russ, which I thought worked really well. In Sentient, the second book of The Mentalist Series, I stated in my blog review that I would like to learn more about Russ and his life in the next book which is exactly what I received! Reading about Russ' thoughts and feelings was everything I needed and more! Again, I completely adored each scene I came across with Gemma and Russ in. There's just something about their relationship and the way they were with each other that had me rooting for them throughout the series.
I enjoyed learning about new characters that were introduced, especially Jose. He had some quirks and mystery behind his well-developed character which I liked reading about and would love to read more into his story. Also, I became quite fond of Nirmayi. It was difficult to figure out whether or not you could trust her at times, but I liked that element to her character because it kept the mystery and a lot of questions were popping up about her and her actions in my head. Unfortunately, we didn't see as much of Laura as I would have hoped to have read about. I really enjoyed learning about her in Sentient and thought that was going to be the start of giving her a bigger part in the final instalment.
I thought Keepers had the perfect balance of action, fast paced scenes, and likeable characters to finish off the incredible series with. Although I really enjoyed the first book, Aversion, I would have to say this is probably my favourite book from The Mentalist Series. I love Udogu's writing throughout the book and think she did a great job with wrapping up the finale as it leaves you knowing a lot but also wondering what they might face in the future. I would love to read more about the future Gemma with her family and friends.
I'd definitely recommend this series to fans of young adult, mystery, paranormal, action genres. I would rate the entire series overall with four out of five stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

she loves without forming an unlikely alliance?

Review:
I have reached the end of The Mentalist Series and book three did not disappoint. However, it leaves me questions a longing for a continuation.

What I enjoyed in keeper versus the other books was this one offered us a dual perspective. The story was told from Gemma and Russ' point of view. Which I found to be well written and intriguing to have the story played out from alternating persons.  Now if you read the series you'll become very familiar with the pair. But you'll only of Russ from Gemma's POV. Throughout all the previous works your left wanting more of Russ, I mean after all he was thrown into a whole new mix of life.

The intertwinement of Averters, Empaths and Keepers was stitch perfectly to a tee. Watching the world of the mentalist and the illusions in which groups thought of each other was a powerful movement that ended it all.

I wasn't sure how this would series would wrap up and While it was very climatic, it was also somewhat demure. What I had anticipated was not what had occurred. Although I didn't get the ending I had hoped for, I found the one that Udogu provided fit perfectly into place. Especially once you get the chance to learn more about the different groups and the history of them.

The Keepers did seem to up the romance slightly, but it was over the top and it didn't detract from the storyline. In fact, it adds the perfect flare to be mixed in with the very action pack, on the move story line.

One thing I very much enjoyed that Kenechi was able to capture was the shifting emotions I had for characters. It was a lot of second guessing my own feeling about them and pondering as too what the right way was to go. Who should Gemma side with and who is the good guy.

Kenenchi Udogu meticulously rounded this series up with a very impactful ending. But also left me wondering is this really the end for Gemma and Russ' story?

The third act of a play is where it all usually comes together. The waiting, the mystery of two forces, and the inevitable meeting and fighting back ends here. Right here in this third and final book of the Mentalist Series. The gang is officially tired of running away. I don't like giving away spoilers, so I won't say a whole lot about this book. I will say that this was written in both Russ and Gemma's point of view. We can hear Russ' running internal dialogue of being galant trying to find a way to protect his lady love, and then the reality that he's still just a teenage boy and he's afraid. And he's not as strong or equipped to protect his love as he wants to think he is. The world he knew as a kid is not the same one he's been running around in. Bad guys do exist. Powers beyond our control can be manifested to hurt us and others. Words and alliances can be twisted.
Gemma's internal musings are no different. One the one hand, she has accepted whatever fate lies ahead but she is still just a girl who wants to be home and safe with Russ, and her dad. She does gets braver and takes more risks with each book. More action, foreshadowing, a looming threat, and perhaps, a happy ever after........but one can never be sure what's in store for these twins! Once again, thank you, Kenechi Udogu, for supplying me with this book. I was sweating bullets there for a while but way to end the series! I can't wait to read more of your work!

A fun story with likeable characters and lots of action but I ended up getting lost with the plot and that made me lose interest towards the end.

Gemma and Russ just think about things too much. The different groups and their different powers are complicated, and remembering what's happened, who's who, and what everyone is doing is hard enough on its own. Add in Gemma and Russ speculating and thinking about everything everyone says and it's very hard to keep track of what's happened and what they thought might have happened / could happen.

All it really needs is a good editor. There is a decent story here and the characters are interesting and likeable. I really like the way the 'bad' people aren't actually bad - they want something other than violence and evil for the sake of it. They just want different things to the main characters.

The Mentalist is a fun and original series that has masses of potential. I'm very interested to see what the author does next.

It’s done. I have officially finished reading the Mentalist series by Kenechi Udogu.

In case you haven’t heard about it already, the Mentalist series is a trilogy plus one short novella. Each book is on the short side and even with four books in the series, they are rather easy to finish. But even with the allure of being a short series, was it worth the read?

Gemma Green is an averter. No, scratch that. She is a Progressive Empath. An averter is capable of altering people’s minds to prevent them from committing self-endangering acts. Gemma is capable of so much more. In a world of male averters, Gemma struggles to understand her powers. But as her path crosses with others like herself, she must learn to control these new abilities. And if she hopes to protect those she loves, she’ll need to do it quickly.

Keepers is the 3rd part of her saga revolving around 16-year-old Gemma and the Mentalists. I've been following the series from the beginning, and I must say that I like Keepers the best. This is, of course, due to the much more dense, complex storyline, but also because the author's writing style has improved steadily over the years.

The story is exciting, plausible, fast-paced and begins wihtout preamble, dropping the reader right into the action.
The author assumes that you have read the previous books, and I would recommend doing so, because you will not understand the complex, intricate narrative without prior knowledge. This is legitimate and often the case with large story arcs and epic plots.

Now let’s shift attention to the characters: Gemma is, as always, a sympathetic, believable heroine. She has grown a lot since her first "adventures": In Aversion she was a social misfit, trying not to draw attention to herself, in Sentient we saw her uncertain and confused, left to care for her own.
Now, in Keepers, Gemma is much more self-confident, mature and stable within herself. Re- united with her father and her lover, she is finally at ease with herself and her powers
Gemma knows where she belongs (and to whom) and found her place in the world. Whether this is with the Averters, the Empaths or the Keepers remains to be seen.
And here is the only point of criticism I could find in the whole story. Gemma seems to fit into all categories, seems to be a part of all of the above mentioned groups. Perhaps less would have been more here.

Russ also plays a much bigger role, and that is a good thing! As always, he never hesitates to support his beloved heroine, but he is no longer the colorless, spineless supporting character I criticized in Sentient. He is intelligent and has his own opinions, which makes him a valuable member of the group (even though he ist the only one without powers). This does not mean that he doesn’t trust Gemma blindly, it rather emphasizes the fact that their love is one of equals, that Russ is a strong and capable person on his own, albeit Gemma is the one possessing incredible powers.

I can only recommend Keepers. It is an entertaining, thrilling, well-written and - above all – original read. Kenechi builds a world that is compley and completely different from all these vampires, fairies and angels one can find in the bookstores right now. I wish there were more of those!

The third book in The Mentalist series is the most mature in the series and the one that has more action in it. It jumps right into the action and if you haven't read the other books you will get lost. I think the author did a great job writing this book and if you liked the series you will find the end to be everything you expected.

Gemma has grown since the first book, she is not the scary shy girl anymore. She now has more knowledge about her powers and has faced so many enemies that she is not afraid to do what's necessary to protect those she loves. The final chapters are full of excitement and the adrenaline is at its highest point.

This one alternates POV between Russ and Gemma, which is great because it gives Russ a bigger role in the story and also we get to see a whole picture of what's going on.

Overall, I really liked and enjoyed the final book and I think the author deserves a round of applause for the series.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review).

(This review may contain spoilers).

Having read the previous books in this series, I was happy when the author approached me to read the final one. It didn't take me long to be drawn into the world of the Mentalists and Gemma and Russ' lives.

I liked being able to see something of the wider world of the mentalists and it was also good to see the Keepers. I liked seeing some of the characters from the previous books, though I didn't have a chance to re-read those, so I wasn't as familiar with the others as I was with Gemma and Russ.

I liked Jose quite a bit in this book. I couldn't really say I liked Laura as much, though. I didn't really know what to think of her for some of the book, as I couldn't tell if she was just scatty or if she was deliberately hiding things. It was nice to see some greater depth to the characters like Alice and Erin, though.

I thought it was good that there were some things left to the imagination, such as some of the details of what Gemma saw. I thought that added really well to the tension and I was kept reading throughout, wanting to find out what would happen next.

I did think there was perhaps a little bit too much talking. While there was some action, it wasn't until towards the end of the book I actually felt like the characters were in any real danger; and then everything seemed to happen at once. I was disappointed to see Laura had switched her affections so quickly, though.

It was interesting to see how the different factions viewed each other, though I was a bit confused about who believed what. I would have liked a bit more detail included about the background and how the Keepers related to Gemma. While there seemed to be a bit more detail about what exactly she could do, I felt she was getting somewhat overpowered by the end of the book.

While I don't really tend to like multiple first person perspectives, I did feel it made sense in this instance, as it allowed me to view events from the POVs of two of the main characters. In the future, I would definitely be interested in reading more books by this author.

In the final chapter of the Mentalists series, Gemma faces her worst fear in the form of a group of Keepers who seem to know everything about her. As other foes from her past surface, Gemma struggles to stay one step ahead of them all. But when help comes from unexpected sources, can she trust any of them?

Keepers by Kenechi Udogu, the last book in the Mentalists series, throws readers into action in the first scenes. Gemma is fighting to not only save herself from becoming a weapon in a brewing war, she’s fighting to save the ones she love from becoming collateral damage. Readers will find themselves in unexpected places with characters who have their own agendas for Gemma. The book also delves into Russ’s thoughts about the world of Mentalists, and readers get to see Gemma in action from the outside.

The pacing moves pretty quickly with only a few lulls toward the middle. I would definitely recommend reading the first books in the series to be able to fully grasp the past relationships of the characters. I could have used a bit more character description to jog my memory, as it’s been a while since I read the first books. There are also some places where I had to re-read to understand who was talking. But it does not detract from the story.

With a satisfying conclusion, Keepers completes Gemma’s journey without seeming forced or tying everything up neatly. Just like in real life, there will always be more to Gemma’s story. But for now, readers will find that this chapter in Gemma’s life is wrapped up nicely.

Original review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Kenechi Udogu!

Keepers is the third and final book about Gemma and Russ. In Sentient, Gemma and Russ came across Anthony, a hybrid who wanted to recruit Gemma to fight the Keepers. Now in Keepers, they come across Anthony’s father, Eamon, who’s a Keeper and wants to find Anthony. Everything is so weird for Gemma, she doesn’t know who she should trust – Anthony or Eamon. Who should she trust in order to protect her family?

Keepers was such a good book to end The Mentalist Series. I loved that there was a double perspective: Gemma and Russ. You got to know what Russ was thinking and feeling too and it was just everything I needed. Gemma and Russ are so cute together, they know each other so well and they are just perfect for each other! When they do something, they always think of each other. They are the perfect couple!

Keepers was the perfect book to end a series. It was fast-paced, it had a double perspective and it was just so good! From Aversion to Keepers, there was a lot of character and plot development. Keepers was definitely an amazing book and I cannot wait to read the prequel novella, Broken Ties.

Personally, for me, I felt this was the best book in the series. I felt Kenechi improved on the story and characters within the Mentalist universe. Although, I felt Gemma was still stubborn as ever in a lot of ways, I still have to put into context how old she is and what she has gone through in her life to make her that way. Not to mention not much time passing from one book the next, doesn't leave room for a lot of growth. The story was evenly paced and the introduction of new characters from the group of people whom were always just a dark shadow in the previous books was well done and welcomed. Everything that has been introduced in this series comes to a header in this book with the possibility of more to come. I enjoyed reading this book tremendously and hope there will be more the Gemma and Russ' story.

But here is a snippet of my review:

This book was so much better than the others. The others were like good and sorta my thing but this one, it was amazing. Kenny has definitely work hard to get to this point and I am super happy that she has found this point. I really hope that somewhere in the future we see more of the Mentalist world, through someone else’s eyes. This series is worth reading if you are interested in trying something new and different from the mainstream.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The third time was the charm with this one! Perhaps it is because it was longer than the other books? I don’t know, but this was the best book of the three. As the title suggests, Keepers (who had been depicted as the big bad guys hiding in the shadows) feature a lot in this book.

The book begins with Gemma being kidnapped by some unknown people after she and other students are involved in an accident. These guys being the opportunists they are snatch her from the scene of the accident which is really messed up if you think about it. The rest of the team at home, that is Laura, Russ, Paul and even Peter are stuck trying to figure out where she is all the while looking over their shoulder in case the other empaths show up.

Unlike in the other books, Keepers is written using alternating Gemma and Russ POVs. It was nice to read someone else’s point of view for a change. This one, just like the other two is fast paced with a lot going on. There is one reveal after another although some were not so grand because I figured them out long before they were revealed. Other new characters including the ones from the previous book were featured in this book. It is now a tie between Laura and Peter for my favorite character since I couldn’t choose. Peter of all people! He was not particularly good (in fact he was a douche) in the first book but I liked him in this one, sarcastic comments and all.

The ending was perfect. With all my questions answered, I could not possibly fault it. Keeper is the final book in the series although there is a novella to complete the box set. I have started the novella and as far as I can see, the book has nothing to do with Gemma and Russ so this is it for them.

All in all I highly recommend this book for paranormal and YA readers. The wait for this book was totally worth it.

I’m happy to say that this was my favorite book of the series! It’s hard to describe but I think that Udogu was able to perfectly balance all of the good qualities of the first two books and incorporate them into this book seamlessly.

Whereas there were obvious things that I didn’t like about the first two, the only thing that had me wary was the ending. I was filled with questions and I felt like it was a bit open-ended which can be good if the author decides to write more books but I prefer something with more closure, personally.

I also felt like everything was a bit too easy? Or the way it ended was a bit too picture-perfect. I’m not quite sure why because the characters were struggling throughout the book but it felt to me like most everything was handed to them on a silver platter at the end.

Despite that, I loved the character interactions, I found the writing to be more mature which I appreciate a lot, and the world was built upon much more than in the previous books.

Overall I thought that this was a stellar conclusion to the series (if it is truly the end…) with wonderfully-written characters that I miss already. I recommend this series to anybody interested in a series chronicling a strong young woman navigating her life and powers with friends and family helping her along the way.

Our band of misfits are preparing for the final showdown. Russ, Gemma, her dad Paul, Laura and Peter. It seems Anthony and his Empath army isn’t the only thing they need to worry about now though as the Keepers are coming to play their part. Are they friend or foe? Only time will tell.

Eamon is the head of a Keepers group, a group who happens to contact/kidnap Gemma. They can’t understand why Anthony wants her so much but something else that intrigues them is that she has an Orb – one that turns orange. After an accident from a school trip Gemma wakes up finding herself tied to a chair, not one to panic now as this isn’t her first time she tries to figure out a way to escape. She gets a shock when she meets the ones who took her, none more so than meeting Eamon. He has a striking resemblance to someone and soon reasons for the battle brewing slip into place. They keep saying she is safe with them but the fact they won’t let her leave is ringing warning bells to me. She shouldn’t worry too much though as the rest of the gang are on there way.

They are stronger together, none so more than Russ and Gemma being Sentient Twins. Everyone from all sides think Gemma is something special, powers stronger than most. A danger to some if not trained properly so I think lessons might be on the cards further down the line. They may get away but it seems too easy, like they have played a part in a bigger game they don’t know the rules of yet. Seems they are done hiding and waiting for an attack. Its time to act first rather than waiting if they ever want to live a normal life – well as normal as they can get anyway. Its when they go on a road trip that they add someone new to the group. Jose, a fellow Keeper, who at times was a voice of reason and at others had people wanting to smack him for being closed minded. He, along with his fellow group, know change is coming but need to find a better way to make it so. Anthony and his Empath army still seem to be a few steps ahead, along with the Keepers, and its all our guys can do to keep up. The path they are on could go two ways. One causing a cull and the other stopping it, at least until someone else tries to cause trouble that is.

Nirmayi, a member of Anthony’s army, can see visions of the future, always two outcomes so lets see if the one she wants is the one that should come to pass. What she shares can be subjective. She sees more but only divulges enough to get the outcome she really hopes for. Seems Gemma has more to her than anyone knew. She along with Russ could be used as a weapon, they just don’t know for which side. Which one is the lesser of two evils, only time will tell? The journey they are on slowly builds until you get one hell of a showdown. You get to see what others are really capable of and the true reasons behind other peoples’ motives. Some aversions might come true no matter how much Gemma might have tried to stop them. Make no mistake the battle will see danger coming their way, lets just hope they can come out the other side.

Now Erin is one Empath the Keepers should keep a closer eye on as her anger could cause more problems down the line. I did think Peter was going to play a bit more of a part but was good when he stepped up to help at the start. Great group of characters though that worked well together throughout. Jose was a fun addition to the group when off on their road trip. These Keepers though are sneaky and it seems the real game – though calmer for the time being – has only just begun. Lets hope our two lovebirds can handle it and nothing else tries tearing them apart.

This third book in The Mentalist Series does a nice job of wrapping up the story while leaving enough undone to suggest more books in the series. Unlike the first two books, this one has two narrators--Gemma and Russ--and they alternate telling the story. After two books of just Gemma, this took some getting used to. I enjoyed her voice and not having to readjust between two different people. However, this format gave the author opportunity to build tension and give two points of view on what was happening. Again, this is not a stand-alone novel, as it would make little sense to anyone who hasn't read the first two installments. Since all three are relatively short, they could be comprise a single book, as far as I'm concerned. A box set does exist, but I still think the three could be one.

As before, the punctuation issues, while relatively minor, still were a source of distraction. Udogu is a good storyteller who has great promise, and I would read more of her books.

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Keepers is the longest of The Mentalist trilogy and I could tell has the most depth. The story continues to follow Gemma, Russ, her dad, and Laura as alliances are made and everyone is scrambling to get Gemma on their side. This book uses a dual POV between Gemma and Russ. I like the way that we are able to get both sides of the story from them. The thing with the story being longer is that there are many more ups and downs before getting to the end which the other books didn’t have. All in all, this was a good ending to the series and I can’t wait to read more works by Kenechi!

I received a copy of this for a fair and honest review. I thought the first two books were amazing how is that is could get better. I got to see a side in this one that was not in the two before. That is part come from Russ's POV. He is doing all he can after being thrust in this new world of thinking. I was pleased with how much Gemma has grown and learned to be more comfortable in her own skin. There is a mix of only and new enemies in this one. That includes the Keepers that seem to know all about her. this is the conclusion of the trilogy. I still have a few questions but I loved the story overall. Grab this it is worth the read.

The third book in The Mentalist series by Kenechi Udogu. Gemma and friends are faced with new challenges and have to question who they can trust. This book wraps the series up nicely, and adds even more to the world of the Mentalists.

Keepers is a little different than the first two books because it uses alternating points of view. It was great to get not only Gemma's POV, but Russ's viewpoint in this last book. Also, this book is a little longer than the others, and it allowed for a little more development of the story and characters. A great ending to the series.

Original review can be found on my blog here.

I would like to, firstly, thank the author, Kenechi Udogu, once again for giving me the chance to review her amazing series. The review for Keepers is the final novel in the series and if you have yet to read my review for the first 2 novels, you can read Aversion, 1st novel in the series, here and Sentient, 2nd novel in the series, here. 😀

Wow, this final novel to the series ended with a bang! It certainly has been enjoyable reading Keepers. It is really well written and the character development throughout the entire novel is just, double thumbs up. Although I would love the ending to be more action-packed, I guess this simple and peaceful ending is pretty satisfying too.

Keepers started off with a bang, full of action and mystery, which I love. I’m hooked to the novel from the very start. Numerous questions start forming in my mind and I’m so curious and hyped up to know Gemma’s true identity. I want to know the extent of the Keepers’ powers and whether the rumors about them are really true. The rumors being that the Keepers want to kill off all the Progressive Empaths and are pretty much ‘heartless creatures’ whose goals are only to enforce law and order.

The author has done an amazing job in wrapping this series up. Gemma’s character development is astounding. She grows from a shy, social misfit and a rather naive child, in Aversion, to a confused and indecisive child, in Sentient, to finally a much more mature and brave child, in Keepers. Gemma knows what she wants in life and works towards it with her own determination and drive. She is no longer the clueless girl who was struggling to find her own identity and instead, grow to be a much more clear-headed and determined child. The character growth in Gemma is phenomenal. It has been one hell of a ride with her.

I would definitely read a sequel to this series. I want to know the future Gemma, who has honed her powers to absolute perfection. I want to know the extent of her powers, what she is capable of, and how Russ is going to be an impact in her life, the influence he holds in shaping her thoughts and decisions.

The character which catches my eye in Keepers is going to be Jose. He is a wonderful character who knows when to joke around and when to be serious. Not only that, he is extremely handsome. ❤ Jose sounds like the ‘ideal boyfriend’ almost every girl would dream of having? XD That’s my own opinion I guess… Anyways, Jose’s perseverance and determination are really noteworthy. He keeps trying to convince the party that he is trustworthy though they think otherwise. It all works out in the end since he manages to earn the trust he deserves from all of them. 🙂

~SPOILERS~

The ‘twist’ in Keepers totally caught me off guard. I expected Gemma to be special and stronger than regular Averters but I’ve never expected her to be one of them. What blows my mind is that Gemma is one-of-a-kind and is probably, if not, the strongest Averter out there.
