Hmmm...sadly I wasn’t ‘feeling’ this as much as its predecessors - mainly because I thought the scenes didn’t flow as well and nothing much happened plot-wise which is a shame. I did enjoy the last third though involving Riku <3 I think I might wait to read the reviews for volume 4 before purchasing the next one.
This series is like jellybeans. If someone puts jellybeans in front of me, I will pop them down one after the other until they are gone. But I do not seek out jellybeans, because who really wants or needs them. I shall not seek out future volumes of this bland and generic romance series, but if someone were to put a pile down in front of me...
Ten Serizawa has a two-hour commute through the mountains to high school every day, so she can’t spend much time hanging out with her friends in the afternoon. She decides to move into the local boardinghouse, where one of her friends and three other boys are living. Ten’s friends consider her to be as oblivious as a rock when it comes to noticing boys and falling in love, but will she be able to keep her calm and steady heart in her new living situation?
In Shortcake Cake vol 3 we explore the idea that Riku's feelings are still very much alive for Ten. Chiaki pushes aside his own feelings and treats Ten like a friend. I actually really appreciated this even though its not what I wanted. Riku is so frail and really Ten is taken aback by his stance about her. I was intrigued though that Ten explored her own feelings more, thinking about the past. She and Chiaki are such subtle characters it makes for a deeper connection to the characters even though the plot is quite slice of life in nature.
I was shocked at the bromance that is developing between Riku and Chiaki and how it came out through Riku's feelings. That is NOT what typically happens, we normally get rivalry. So I was really taken aback and am intrigued by how this will continue to develop. I would really love to continue to see more of the other housemates too. That was one of my favorite parts in this volume... meeting Chiaki's brother, seeing the other girls fawn over him and learning about the study fiend in the house!!
There is this drama with Rei that is so funny because he really has no clue what is going on but you know he's going to try to mettle. Really though I was more tense about Chiaki and his handling of his friends feelings. You really don't know what Chiaki is feeling even though we get his POV at times. We know he likes Ten too. And they are quite comfortable with each other! We are given a bit of a clue when their house mother talks to Ten about what she wants in a boyfriend. Talk about enlightening!
The art is very much like the story... quite subtle. I love how the characters change slightly depending on the situation they are in... like when they first get up compared to after dinner doing the dishes. Their hair will be mussed and they will be wearing glasses earlier and then look more put together later. It gives this lovely sense of time that is normally absent from manga except when the story changes plot lines. It's quite perfect for a slice of life shoujo story!
Shortcake Cake vol 3 is really starting to shake up Ten and her relationships with Riku, Rei and Chiaki. This country girl has settled into her new boarding house and is now comfortable enough to think about more... Does she feel more? Does she want more? Who stirs these feelings of more? We'll have to see how she handles herself in the next volume of Shortcake Cake!
This is a multi-volume series and there may be references to the plot of those volumes... SO READ WITH CARE! Here is my review of 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |

Before starting, just want to state that I read this in paperback, not on Kindle, but the Kindle edition is the only option Goodreads has available. Okay, onto the review.
I have mixed feeling about this volume. I am happy that Ten is exploring her emotions and trying to understand her feelings towards Chiaki and Riku, but at the same time it's not that interesting. Riku is trying to give her space since she rejected him, which I applaud, but Chiaki is trying to put Riku with Ten because he knows Riku still loves her, but Ten isn't interested. I know Chiaki is just trying to be a good friend, but it is really frustrating that he's acting on pure logic without taking everyone's feelings into account. Granted, Riku tells him to stop butting in which was a huge plus in my book, so there is that. We get to see Rei, though briefly, and I have to say he is probably my favorite male character in the story. I know I originally said Chiaki was, but Rei is so childish about love that it makes me smile when he throws a tantrum over something Ten does. Ten herself is good in this volume, I really like how she is taking her emotions seriously and rather than jumping to conclusions about how she feels is taking the time to decide how she feels. The best example of this is when she reaches out for Riku's hand during a storm (she's scared of thunder and reaches out to him while they are alone). At first, she feels at ease holding his hand, since the thunder is scaring her, but once the threat is temporarily gone she feels better letting go. She is taking the time to process her emotions in each situation to determine how she feels about someone overall rather than in the moment and I truly applaud that.
Overall, this was a good volume with a little too much love drama but the characters made it worth while. I am eager to see how the story progresses in volume four and still recommend the series to anyone interested in a light love story.
Updated Review 5/10/25: One of my favorite scenes in the series is in this volume, and it was beautiful!! I felt I was holding my breath when watching everything unfold because I was "afraid" I would miss something otherwise!
I really really love how Ten is thinking so much about Riku's actions and what they mean. Even Riku is thinking about his own actions and find it incredibly cute how both of them are sort of "obsessing" about each other in different ways. Hehe!
Chiaki trying really hard to get Riku and Ten together in light of his feelings is really amazing and shows a lot of his character. 🥹
Original Review 6/16/22: I am so scared to hope for this ship to sail, but dang it!
I WANT THIS SHIP TO SAIL!!!!!!
GAH! I about felt off my couch squealing and giggling over that ending! LOL! I absolutely LOVE Riku and 100% here for all the Riku feels in this volume! And to top it all off, he is SUCH a gentleman!!!
That's not to say that Chiaki isn't because he is too!! In fact, I've really appreciated his struggle because it's obvious he DOES have feelings for Ten, but he's thinking of Riku and just massive respect for him in him trying to get Riku and Ten together!
Though seeing Riku AND Chiaki interact is GOLD! I love their friendship and I had to laugh when Riku told Chiaki he would sell off his books if he (Chiaki) told Ten anything like that one HUGE thing he says in this volume!
And Ten!! Gah! SHE IS FEELING SOME OF THE FEELS!! And who was that mystery guy we saw in her dream?! She's been a pretty open book so far (at least for the most part) and VERY curious who he is!
But Riku! <3 <3 <3
Did I mention I'm scared for this ship to sail?? I sooooo desperately want it to especially with all those perfect shojo moments in this one! *happy sighs*
Aww, these characters are really starting to grow on me! If I were being picky, I’d wish for a teensy bit less focus on the romance, but it’s cute so far. I don’t know how to feel about this developing love triangle, though. Hopefully it doesn’t ruin the story. 😭
The story is very generic. I thought by the third volume there would be some progress but we still don't see even the slightest bit of connection with the characters.
Have I mentioned that I don’t like love triangles? I think everyone has said it, at least once. Can creators actually listen and not provide the same love triangle conflicts? Thanks, I’ll appreciate it.
Besides that, I really loved it. The art style is my absolute favorite currently since it is so gorgeous! The character development is super cute, too!!
*** semi- spoiler *** The moment when Riku threatened to burn (or throw away) all of Chiaki’s books was all too relatable. Poor Chaiki. *** end of semi- spoiler***
4 stars 。・:*˚:✧。 Ahhh this was cute. I honestly don’t know what ship I’m shipping at this point but I’m just going to go with the flow tbh. This was such a fast read, definitely a cute manga series that I will continue.
Me gusta mucho 𝚃𝚎𝚗, nuestra chica protagonista: honesta, sincera y clara.
This volume was hella cute, with some great heart-pounding moments, and seemed more directed on the romance story developing. So, after Chiaki and Ten pretended to date, Rei seems to be off planning new things (I hope he continues to stay out of the picture), but Riku is still a little sad from his rejection. His attempts to make Ten feel at ease, though, are noticed by her, and there is a little awkwardness between them, but also some growing feelings. Chiaki, meanwhile, feels dejected over Riku being sad and tries to get them together - me thinks he is kind of hiding from his own feelings in this case. Ten continues to be straightforward in her interactions, which feels like a refreshing change from just plain old angst, but she does have moments where she feels flustered in Riku's presence. Additionally, there was one nice moment between her and Ran with them discussing what kind of love Ten wants - I think it presented a nice counter-argument to the whole 'first love is intense' kind of trope. Ten wants to feel at ease, not flustered, and the two boys are the opposing sides, so I am like Ran in this case - I, too, see Chiaki as being more suited to her, but Riku's sincerity and overall personality feels like it would make for a compelling romance!
Overall, it doesn't seem like much developed story-wise but the subtle development between the characters, the beautiful artwork, as well as the fact that it is more slice of life (like, general student life) than romantic tension makes this for a nice relaxing romance.
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review from Viz Media LLC, via Edelweiss.
Yeah, I continue to have pacing issues here, I can't really say it comprehensively , but there's something about the pacing of the story that just doesn't feel right. With that being said, I truly love Ten's interactions with both Riku and Chiaki and I'm a bit scared yet excited on the angst this series will eventually bring between the 3 of them.
I'm very conflicted about this series. So far it has been so focused on the slice of life aspects that there hasn't been any progression with the romance. Since the main focus of the story seems like it supposed to be the romance, it makes the story drag. Also, despite the male characters circling Ten we hardly get see how she feels.
I couldn't read past the introduction of "love interest's beautiful brother" because of the cliche and very annoying route the story took. Several times I picked up this book just to put it back down since the plot wasn't engaging me at all.
Originally I was drawn to Chiaki but now I’m learning more towards Riku... one thing I will say about these editions is intense moments kind of get ruined by weird paneling choices and the lack of chapter pages discombobulates me a little bit. Overall, it’s not an awful read.
Surprisingly, I prefer Riku to Chiaki. (But then again Riku feels like the second love interest, so maybe it's unsurprising) Chiaki is still cute tho and he's trying to be a good friend. I like him.
BE STILL MY HEART!!!!!!!! This is one of the first shoujo manga I’ve read that actually presents a valid triangle…I thought Chiaki would be the obvious shoe-in, and maybe he is endgame, but damn the scenes with Ten and Riku are so sweet…I need to read more!!!
