Love Under Construction is Book 4 in the 12 book Thurston Hotel Series of sweet-to-warm, standalone, contemporary romance novels, connected by common settings, characters and events. Billionaire land developer, Hunter Davis, returns to Harmony with one agenda in mind. Right the wrongs of the past, because until he does they’re like a black smudge on his soul. But Hunter has never been able to forget what he once shared with Mackenzie Berg, the woman he secretly married eleven years ago. And now something in his heart refuses to die, something that makes him want to woo her back into his arms…for the rest of his life. Local contractor, Mackenzie Berg, may be secretly married to Hunter Davis—she might even have a small mountain of newspaper and magazine clippings about the hunky land developer tucked into the bottom of her dresser drawer—but that doesn’t mean she still has feelings for him, does it? She intends to avoid the man...until her plans awry. With the whole town watching their every move, can these two very determined people rediscover the love of a lifetime?
Sheila Seabrook writes love stories with heart and humor from her home on the beautiful Canadian prairies. Her romantic books are filled with smart, sassy women, hot men who love them, and a wild assortment of family members guaranteed to try to steal the show.
When Sheila's not writing, she can usually be found in her favorite chair doing research (code for reading romance books) or devising multiple excuses to avoid cooking, laundry, housework, and shoveling the snow. She does, however, love to shop for flowers in the spring, and spends copious hours digging in the dirt to plant them…although her marriage contract clearly stipulates that the man of the house must pull the weeds.
Her mission in life is to give readers emotional romantic stories and unforgettable characters, a relaxing treat for the end of the day. And if she can help them escape the laundry pile, she's totally on board.

Families can be a source of love and support. They can also be royal pains in the behind, and the reason our dreams don’t always turn out the way we expected. Mackenzie knows that all too well. From both sides of the coin. When it came to which side of the fence she’d come down on between her family and the man she loved, the man she had just secretly married… well, she made her choice, now she had to survive it.
It had been eleven years since Hunter had last set foot in this town. Eleven long years of questioning that decision, eleven years of missing the girl he’d loved, the girl he’d married on the sly because heaven forbid her family should know the truth. Maybe that was harsh, but time changes some things, our own version of events is often the first causality of the passage of time.
He’d been painted with the brush of another’s actions, and as a result he’d lost… everything. That was then, this was today and he was back determined to make restitution, perhaps find redemption and see if one little slip of paper could finally bring him the life they’d been denied eleven years ago. Really, it was all in Mackenzie’s hands now. Once he’d been certain of how she’d act, now all of this was a wing and a prayer that could blow up in his face quite spectacularly.
Love Under Construction is one of those stories where you hurt for all parties involved. Well, perhaps not one, but the majority. Returning from their wedding Hunter and Mackenzie walked into a storm that probably no one could have survived. They might have fought for their love back then, but everything really was stacked against them. For Mackenzie, love never died it simply got put onto a shelf that she’d keep polished and visit often, but as far as doing anything about the situation… no, that path lead to more pain. Now thanks to the townsfolk she has no choice but to make nice and pretend again with the man she once, well, still loved in this farce. It wasn’t going to be easy, and perhaps some truths will finally come out that can mend fences. Or even bring two people back together in spite of themselves.
I completely enjoyed Hunter’s and Mackenzie’s romance. Both perhaps a bit too stubborn for their own good, but they were a believable, relatable couple who you instinctively knew should be together – if they can get beyond the actions of others and the past. Watching Mackenzie’s eyes be opened to the man Hunter has become was a delight. Going along on a very difficult journey with Hunter was humbling and enlightening. I don’t know of many people who would have had the strength to do what he was determined to do.
As always the secondary characters make this story the unique experience the entire The Thurston Hotel series has become for me. Although, I have to admit that Mrs. A will always be my favorite recurring character. I find myself looking for her scenes for a smile or a word of wisdom.
If you enjoy Contemporary Romance and are addicted to series, then this story and this series should be on your reading list. I would recommend Love Under Construction for any Romance reader who enjoys a good story line, a story thread woven throughout the series, believable and likable characters, and an experience that will have you immediately picking up the next story.
