Ryder Fallon has a reputation for being ruthless. It is said he’s equally adept at dealing cards or death. When the Apaches take him prisoner, he’s certain Fate has dealt him a losing hand—until a green-eyed temptress intervenes. Captured by the Apaches four years ago, Jenny Braedon has prayed for someone—anyone—to rescue her. She doesn’t care that Ryder is half-Indian, only that he seems to be the answer to her prayers. Little does she realize that danger and desire will find her on the long road to freedom.
Madeline Ruth was born on 1963 in California, where she raised. She married her high school sweetheart and they have three sons, all handsome enough to be cover models. Growing up, her favorite pastimes were going to the movies and going horseback riding on Saturday mornings at Griffith Park. Madeline has always been "horse happy." A horse was the one thing she asked for on every birthday and every Christmas. Many years later, that dream came true when she bought an Appaloosa mare named Candy—because she was so sweet. Madeline loves animals. Over the years, she's had numerous dogs, cats, fish, mice, hamsters, turtles and birds, and her horse, of course. The most exotic pet was a crocodile that belonged to one of her sons. Currently, she has a terribly spoiled Pomeranian named Teddi, six goldfish, a catfish, and a betta. When she's not writing, Madeline enjoys going to movies and the theater. Her favorite plays are The Phantom of the Opera, The Scarlet Pimpernel and her all-time fave, Beauty and the Beast. She also loves reading, going to lunch with her best friend, collecting Star Wars, The Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast memorabilia, and playing with the most beautiful, adorable, brilliant grandkids in the world.
Madeline started writing when her children were still at home, and she wrote for several years, finding time to write after her children were in bed and her husband was at work. In true cliché fashion, she wrote the books and put them under the bed, never telling anyone what she was doing, until one day she let a friend read one. Encouraged by her friend's comments, and armed with a copy of Writer's Market supplied by said friend, Madeline began sending out query letters. After six years and 31 rejections, Leisure Books bought Reckless Heart, and she's been writing ever since. After writing several Westerns, Madeline decided to try her hand at something else and wrote her first vampire romance. It was a short story titled "Masquerade" for an anthology. She loved writing that so much that she wrote her first full-length vampire romance, Embrace the Night, and thus Amanda Ashley was born. One of her dreams had been to write for Harlequin, and she accomplished that in 2003 with the publication of her Silhouette Romance novel, Dude Ranch Bride. Madeline loves to hear from her readers. (2/1/11)I find that the timeline is off. The prologue is dated 1868, and in it is says that it had been "two long years" since she was captured by Apaches. Then chapter one is dated 1870, the year which Fallon gets captured by the same Apaches. In chapter three, page 36, Jenny refers to being with the Apaches for 2 years and again in Chapter 6, page 96. The back cover also says Jenny had been a captivve for "two long years". However, based on the statement made in the prologue dated 1868 which stated it had been two years since the Apaches captured her (making her enslaved in 1866), and the date of 1870 when she meets Fallon (two years after the prologue was dated), it should have been FOUR years that she has been a captive.
(2/4/11) The book was ok. Liked the plot. As I saw in another review for this book, I agree that the passion part of it was G Rated. If the passion had been spicier then the book would have been a lot better.
3.5- 3.75 stars. I read this book thru in one sitting, it was good enough to keep me turning pages. Liked the H/h, the plot, and there was plenty of action. The last half towards the end almost a little too much drama. An issue kept coming up and was acted on several times with her Apache captor, but I could see why it was an issue for the h. It just felt like a little too much so that’s why it’s not 4 stars for me. Although I enjoyed this book I’m not sure I’ll read the next book about her son. I have 7 of her other books I’ll read first.
There is never a dull moment in this book. Some event or the other is always happening.
Ryder, half breed, was blackmailed into scouting the indians for the white man. He was captured by apache and taken as a prisoner to their camp where he met white slave, Jenny. And thus begins their long, eventful journey.
Ryder, being an Indian warrior, is fearsome, loyal and brave. Everything I love in a hero. Jenny, on the other hand , I cannot abide. She doesn't know what she wants. Her emotions, actions are so conflicting. And the emotional torture that she put Ryder through just caused me to hate her.
This one is a page turner. There is always something happening that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
To me this book was just okay. It was really far-fetched and too much went on, in my opinion, for 2 people to live through. It was really hard for me to finish since it did not pull me in. I am not a fan when the main male character is punching bag and then he is this strong male after all. I never leave a book unfinished and felt like I had to force myself to read. I did skip some parts too. I enjoy reading about Native Americans but this was not so much about them and some parts were quite unbelievable.
I love Ms. Bakers writings. I have read several of her books, but this one failed to hold my attention. I felt the repetitive trips back and forth to the Indian village was drawn out. The romantic scenes between Jenny and Ryder were well written. I did finish this book, but I was glad when I reached the end. I will continue to read Ms. Bakers books.
This author is in my top ten of best reads. I have read at least all of her books and most twice. Although this book is not one of my favourites it's still a good read. He is a half breed tricked into becoming a scout to track the Apache. She is a captive of the Apache and when he becomes one as well she makes a bargain with him and together they plan their escape. This is the first book of two and it's how the family dynamics begin. HEA ending.
Several times I had to make myself, keep reading. More sad and maddening than romantic. Sometimes the storyline drags. Not sure I will read from this author again.
Okay - so I Finished my mindless reading book.....not too risque...but very mindless. For a romance book????......not great. Could not really get into the characters, etc.... You might enjoy it if you keep in mind that it is mindless reading!
It is your typical book where the white woman is captured by Indians (she starts out this way), is kept by the chief (as his wife), gets pregnant and gets to escape (not once but 3 times - LOL)!

I know these books are super problamatic but they really are my guilty pleasure. I try to buy them second hand only and approach them critiquely while I read them.
with regards to this book in particular, the story was good, interesting twists and turns, with a good romantic conclusion. I had to take of a star because the heroine had a few TSTL moments that involved putting herself needlessly in danger because she longed for something she absolutely could not have.
Another good book. I love your books, You keep me on my toes. I love the mystery's you give us the surprises only you can give us, thank you again for the good work you do. Ada G.
