A hot historical romance from USA Today Bestselling Romance Author Jess Michaels
Lucien, the Earl of Stenfax has been engaged twice, but only in love once. That was with his childhood sweetheart, Elise. When she threw him over for a man with more money and a higher ranking title, it broke him. Now she’s widowed and he finds himself drawn to her again, like a moth to her flame.
Elise had her reasons for walking away from Lucien, reasons he doesn’t understand. Back in Society, she’s now financially desperate and is even considering becoming someone’s mistress. But Lucien keeps appearing at the most inopportune moments and it’s only a matter of time before the desire between them explodes.
Time will tell if Lucien will be able to see past his lusty drive for revenge. And if Elise can convince him she’s worthy of more, despite the past.

I’ve read many of Jess Michaels historical romances in the past and loved them. But this one, One Summer of Surrender was one of the BESTS ones I’ve read to date. It is historical romances such as this that will always have me craving for MORE!
The Prologue is set 3 years in the past. Lucien the 11th Earl of Stenfax has just received a letter from his wife to be Elise breaking off their engagement. Lucien is in a VERY BAD way over this, you see he has loved Elise for a very long time and he thought she loved him too. The letter explains to him that she has had a better offer of marriage, it seems she will be marrying the Duke of Kirkford who will make her a Duchess and whom has much more money than Lucien has.
It’s been three years and Lucien is still having troubles with getting over Elise. He makes sure that he goes nowhere that she will be, he has not seen her at all in three years. His brother Gray notices how troubled Lucien is and tells him that he needs to seek out the pleasure of a woman. Lucien ends up going to Vivien Manning’s, a house of ill repute, hoping to find a woman to take to bed.
Elise’s life has spiraled out of control. Her husband was shot dead over another woman and now his cousin is the new Duke of Kirkford. The new Duke is a nasty piece of work and quite possibly nastier than her husband was. You see her husband didn’t leave her anything, it all went to his successor, Ambrose the now 9th Duke of Kirkford. Ambrose has been letting Elise stay at the dower house but he keeps telling her that it’s his property and he acts like he has a claim on her always looking at her like she belongs to him. She knows it’s only a matter of time before he expects her to let him have his way with her. He has already threatened to kick her out. With not many choices, Elise goes to Vivien Manning’s and asks her if she could help her find a protector who she would be a mistress for, one who would set her up in a house and take care of her for sexual favors, she feels this is the only choice left for her to take.
Of course Elise and Lucien run into each other once they are there but I’m not going to say much more about the story-line at this point.
My favorite character of this book was Elise and you’re probably wondering why that is? Well, when the truth finally comes out about why she broke off from Lucien, it was something I NEVER saw coming, my heart went out to her.
I also thought Lucien was a wonderful hero but it took a bit of time before he grabbed my heart but grab it he did.
There were quite a few sexy scenes throughout this read. Let me tell you, Jess Michaels does a superb job of writing them. These two absolutely SCORCHED the pages, I really felt them!
The ending was a good one for Elise and Lucien and it set up the next book in the series,Adored in Autumn which is set to be released in January, 2017. This will be a MUST read for me, I can hardly wait until it’s released.
I highly recommend One Summer of Surrender to those of you who love reading a spicy historical romance with a really good story-line and wonderful characters. Heck I even recommend it to those of you who use to read historical romances but have not read one in a while, this book was THAT good, so give it a try.
Special Note : Even though I have not read books 1 & 2 of this series, I read this one perfectly fine as a standalone. I must say though that I’m really wanting to find time to read the other books now too.

This is book #3 of the Seasons series and I devoured it in under a day!!! This whole series has captivated me, and besides the odd nit pick I have with some of the characters actions... I have fallen in love with these books!!!
After this series is finished, I will be on the lookout for more from Jess Michaels! So far I have loved everything I have read by her!!
After meeting Lord Stenfax in An Affair in Winter I was waiting for him to get his own story because he definitely deserves his own happy ending. When I found out that Elise was going to be his love interest I was skeptical. I mean she is the woman whom Stenfax was in love with. The woman whom he was engaged to. Then she was the woman who broke off their engagement soon before their wedding. I was questioning if I could even like her. However, there is always more to the truth than meets the eye. I easily felt sympathy for Elise and came to like her quickly. I could see her struggling in her desperate situation. I could see her strong connection to Stenfax. I was really rooting for them just like I did for the previous two couples in this series. I was also so very excited to not only see the characters from the previous two books, but also a certain character from Jess Michaels' Mistress Matchmaker series.
This book moves pretty fast and the ending was definitely leading into the next and final book about Felicity and someone from her past. I can't wait until January. Like the others, Felicity needs her own happily ever after. Jess Michaels fans won't want to miss this entire series.
I received this ARC via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
DNF 25 %. Beautiful duchess heroine turns to high class prostitution instead of selling her expensive gowns, jewellery and using her wit to make an honest living. First chapter as unsubtle as they come, spelling out the background story in big bold writing. This is erotic fiction more than HR.
* I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and am voluntarily leaving a review*
I loved this book, it has been obvious since the beginning of the series that Lucien, Earl of Stenfax has never gotten over Elise. Even after she threw him over for a rich duke with no further explanation.
Lucien has tried to move on with his life, even considered marrying - but his heart is not in it. He cannot forget Elise - even though he claims to hate her. Elise was his first love and the pain of her betrayal is still to fresh, even after 3 years. But now Elise's husband is dead and he is determined to stay away from her.
They meet by chance at a pleasure house - he is looking for a distraction and she is looking for a protector. They share a passionate encounter, but Stenfax is disgusted with himself for falling for her charms and leaves abruptly.
Elise is in dire straits - she must find a protector before the new duke throws her out of her home. Her vile late husband made no provisions for her and her parents are dead - she has no other options. When she sees Lucien again, she is shocked - she has never stopped loving him and threw him over for reasons that she cannot reveal. She doesn't expect forgiveness and believes that even if she told the truth, no one would forgive her anyway.
Lucien cannot leave Elise alone, even though he tells himself to forget her. They share several more heated encounters before he finally puts an end to their affair.
When the new duke threatens Elise and throws her out of the house - she turns to Lucien. She knows now that she must tell him the reason she broke off their engagement and married the duke.
When the truth is revealed, Stenfax's family is far more forgiving to Elise than Lucien is. He is consumed with anger that she did not turn to him and did not trust him with the truth. He offers to marry her to protect her from the duke, but makes it clear that he does not forgive her and does not trust her.
These two have a lot to overcome before they can have their HEA, but they are clearly meant to be together.
This is probably my favorite book in the series so far. I am a sucker for second chance love stories. The book is well written, flows nicely, has super steamy/hot love scenes, very emotional moments and sets up the next book perfectly.
I would highly recommend this book, while it could easily be read as a stand alone title, for maximum reader enjoyment, I would recommend reading the series in order.
Originally reviewed at My Devastating Reads. I think I read this in two or three days. I had been eagerly awaiting Stenfax's romance because I was intrigued by his past history, and this book certainly turned into something of a whirlwind romance. I wasn't expecting some of the events to unfold as they do, especially in relation as to why Elise threw over Lucien, the Earl of Stenfax.
I can't say much as to why Elise did suddenly break their engagement, but I can say that Lucien and his family were not the only ones who suffered because of her choice. Elise was a character I found both interesting and unique--she had bravery, but it was also was self depreciating thanks to her past choices and it made her both interesting and confusing until I understood her emotions and thinking. I'm not sure I found her as likable as the previous heroines in this series, but I empathized with her choices.
There's a bit of intrigue in this story that will lead nicely into Felicity's novel, and I have to say, I found it shocking! So I cannot wait to read more of the series. It hit Lucien hard, but everything in this novel sends Lucien reeling because all of it is unexpected. And I must say, for a man who's constantly being thrown a loop by fate, he deals with it all with resilience and even dignity. Most of the time. I didn't always like his interactions with Elise, but I understood they came from a place of pain and also, love.
A second chance romance that features a couple very much in love and trying to rebuild their lives, it reminds us that sometimes we need to build a life with someone. Jess Michaels blends romance and intrigue into a sensual story that was a joy to read.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book in this series that I’ve read and I not as satisfied as I’d hoped to be based on the blurb.
Lucien was devastated when Elise left him for a wealthier aristocrat, so much so that the damage had almost be permanent. I understood his pain, and my heart went out to him. The had a long history together, and for her to have written him off so easily – at least that’s the way it seemed- made his initial reaction understandable. I must admit, I was a little perturbed by her, but I knew that there’d be some good reason for what she’d done, although not what I assumed -parents forcing her in order to save the family from financial ruin. I must say, I’m glad it hadn’t been that as it would’ve been too cliche, not that the real reason was a whole lot better, albeit different.
As it turned out, I did like Elise, although I was still rather chagrined by her past behavior. The first thing I thought when I found out why she left him was the exact same thing he thought when she FINALLY told him the truth (after pussyfooting around and making excuses not to for far too long). She hadn’t trusted him. Their love had been so strong (so they said) that at the first threat to their happiness, she cowed down instead of going to him and trusting him to help her. It was his sister that she was ultimately trying to save, and if she’d known him half as well as she claimed – and should’ve since they’d known each other since their were children – she should’ve known he and everyone else in his family would’ve protected her and his sister. But she played the martyr and gave up their life together without even explaining anything to him. This was difficult for me to get over as a reader. For the author to write a love so strong but make the character react that way. It just didn’t mesh.
I got tired of the sex mainly because it was a deterrent to doing what actually needed to be done – talking. Also, it made Lucien seem weak, not lovelorn. She’d broken his heart tremendously – as evident by his intense reaction – but the moment he saw her again, he couldn’t help himself and they ended up having sex. What’s more disturbing is where they were and both of their reasons for being there which the location itself explains. But on and on – they see each other with the intent of settling things, and end up having sex and leaving everything else unsettled. I believe the author’s goal in doing this (not that I’m a mind-reader) was to show passion and an unbreakable connection, but it fell flat. Lucien didn’t trust Elise, but he loved her so much he couldn’t keep his hands off her. She hadn’t trusted him to be there for her, but she couldn’t say no to him. Once again, it doesn’t mesh well. What kept me reading was my desire to know the real reason behind her departure years earlier. And then I wanted to know how that issue would be resolved, which I see I have to read the next book to find out. I like Felicity, and I’d like to see how her and Asher work things out, but I’m almost afraid of being disappointed again.
"What she had done to him deserved anger and revenge and a great deal else. She had already served part of her penance in a desperately unhappy marriage. Perhaps this was the rest."
FINAL DECISION: Filled with angst, longing, pain and love, this book made me fall in love with Lucien, a man who can't help but love the woman who broke his heart. The path from his complete brokenness in the prologue to the ending was a fantastic journey.
THE STORY: Lucien Danford, Earl of Stenfax had his world destroyed when the woman he loved abandoned him to marry a duke instead. Lucien is determined to stay away from Elise, Duchess of Kirkford, now that she is widowed but he cannot deny thinking about her. When the two unexpectedly end up in the same place, the anger and passion explodes between them. The past is an obstacle that Lucien and Elise cannot seem to overcome even as they cannot resist one another.
OPINION: This book begins with one of the most devastating depictions of a broken heart that I think I have read in a romance book. It immediately made me fall for Stenfax. A man who could love that deeply is a good man indeed. I was also surprised with the direction that Michael's took with Lucien's despair. I thought it very brave to depict his reaction in such a manner because some people would see him as weak. I didn't but there are still stigmas. Everything about Lucien was wonderful. Even angry and brokenhearted he is such a wonderful human being in how he treats Elise that I just wanted to hug him.
My sympathies were completely in Lucien's corner and thus I was prepared to dislike Elise, but instead, I felt sympathy for her as well even as her motives remain murky. She is a desperate woman and her situation is so untenable and it is imperative to remember how few choices women had in the past. Elise is left with nothing else other than using her body to save herself.
These two are so desperate to be with one another even as they know it is hopeless. I love the amount of angst and pain in this story because the darker the journey, the more beautiful the happy ending. Both Lucien and Elise are put through the wringer in this book. Even as the truth comes out, there is still pain and betrayal for the two to overcome.
In addition to the angst filled romance, I really enjoyed the interaction between all the prior series characters. They have intriguing interaction among one another. There is caring and anger and it is clear that Lucien and Elise are the pivot in this book with all these people. I've liked these characters in the prior books and it is nice seeing them again in substantive ways.
Finally, there is a nice plot which motivates the actions of the characters. That story is clearly going to continue in the next book in the series (not the romance but the overarching plot) so be prepared to accept that when reading this book.
WORTH MENTIONING: Felicity is up next.
CONNECTED BOOKS: ONE SUMMER OF SURRENDER is the third book in the Seasons series. This book can be read as a standalone although it has more power having read the other two books in the series.
Lucian, Earl of Stenfax was callously dumped by the beautiful Elise, just before their wedding, Elise passed him over for a Duke in the process breaking his heart and soul and nearly taking his very life. Stenfax was destroyed when he received the letter from Elise ending their engagement and he was on the edge of throwing hisself of the roof of is best friends house in grief, talked down by his brother Grey his vowed never to speak of or mention her name ever again and vowed to move on with his life, the only problem with theat plan is that is still loves her dearly.
Fast forward three year’s and Elise is newly widowed and on the cusp’s of poverty due to the current Duke wanting her whither for his own plaything or out in the gutter, Elise has no choice but to go to the notorious Madam Manning house who pair’s aristocratic, wealthy men with women who need protection and once there Elise comes face to face with the man that she loves and the one man that she broke all those years ago. Lucien!
After reading the previous two installment ‘s of The Season’s and getting to know the shadowy, Stenfax I have been looking forward to reading his story, Lucian was hi=urt terribly by Elise, she behaved so callously to him and broke his heart and I was looking forward to seeing if Micheals could redeem Elise in some way. I have to say that personally I don’t think she did. Even after we found out why Elise did what she did, I still had great trouble warming to her.
Elise isn’t what would think of her, she is a completely different person to the one that we have heard so much about in the last two book’s, and she has always been portrayed as cold-hearted, ice queen. A callous, manipulative bitch who is out for herself and only herself. She is actually a very strong and selfless woman who did go out of her way to help those closest to her and she does genuinely care for Lucian and his family. But yet, I still can’t get past that initial thought of her. She isn’t my favorite character in this series, I do find her cold.
I do like Stenfax though, not as much as his brother Gray, but he is a likable character, you are drawn to him, to his vulnerability and after what he suffered with Elise he is vulnerable, he is always balancing on the edge especially after his mini breakdown when Elise left him, but he has strength too. He is has trust issue, and he is at times overbearing and over protective but his is kind and generous and intelligent with a good heart. And, personally speaking I do think he is too good for Elise.
The plot is strong and very character driven, the love/hate relationship between all character’s on all sides is interesting to watch and play out. As much as I do love this series, I think that the previous two are a little better than this one. It doesn’t seem to have to same magic that i have come to love about The Seasons, I would still recommend this though as it does fill a few gap’s in and answer some questions that surrounded Lucian and Elise.
Not as good as the previous but still worth a read.
Lucien Danford, Earl of Stenfax, was heartbroken when his fiancée, Elise, broke their engagement to marry a wealthy Duke. Three years later, Elise is a destitute widow, her husband died leaving her nothing. Her married life has been hell, she wants to regain her independence and is looking for a protector. Rekindling her relationship with Lucien was not on her agenda, she has never forgiven herself for what she did to him.
Lucien despises her, but he keeps coming back to her. And although he has negative feelings towards her, he is protective of her. He is generous and likable, but he is guarded, he never really recovered from his break-up with Elise. His family is worried about him, he is once again giving himself over to emotions that nearly caused his death. Despite their undeniable mutual attraction and off-the-charts chemistry, Lucien doesn’t trust Elise and refuses to let her hurt him deeply again. But Elise understands his negative feelings and she is ready to fight to earn his trust. Can Lucien give them a chance at the happiness they both so deserve?
I loved the emotional intensity of this historical romance, set in Georgian England, by a new-to-me author. I recommend this lovely story of second chance and true love, with genuine characters, emotional dialogue, steamy love scenes and a fast pace. This book is the third installment in the Seasons series, but it can be read as a standalone.
An advance copy of this book was provided by the publisher, via Netgalley.
Through the first two books of her Seasons series Jess Michaels has been building towards the reconciliation of the Earl of Stenfax and his first love, Lady Elise. Their romance was one of deep emotion that was ripped apart by what was seen as the ultimate betrayal and neither character was the same for it. In One Summer of Surrender the Earl and his lady are reunited in a most unusual way and find that their love for each other has never died.
Their story begins with a flashback to the night when the life Lucien Danford had pictured for himself came to a cruel end. Months before, his childhood sweetheart Elise had accepted his offer of marriage and their future together was assured. So he is devastated when he receives a letter from Elise breaking off their engagement so she can accept a more lucrative offer from the Duke of Kirkford. Unable to cope with this painful betrayal of his love, Lucien drinks a little too much and considers ending his life until his brother and a close friend literally talk him down from a ledge. Knowing that his passion for one woman was the cause of his breakdown, Lucien decides in that moment that he will guard his emotions and be as dispassionate as possible when considering another woman.
I would start off by saying this book was not a traditional historical romance. It leaned more towards historical erotica. Not too hot and heavy but definitely more steamy then the typical historical romances that I've read. Not that I'm complaining! I will admit that I did like this story. There was a lot of angst between Elise and Lucien. There's obviously a lot of history and feelings between them. The situation in which they find themselves is hard. I will admit that I was frustrated with the timing of the "big reveal." I felt it should've come forward sooner in the story but I can understand the author's timing. I just felt poor Elise was dragged around for so long, I just felt sorry for her. The ending was a bit open ended but I know that's part of the continuation of this series. Yes, I did enjoy this story. It's technically the third in a series but it can be read as a standalone. I find myself still interested in the stories that happened before and will probably read those, as well.
** A copy of this story was provided by NetGalley for an honest review***
This was the first book I've read by this author. Its part of a series but could be read as a stand alone novel. It started out kind of clunky but soon turned into a very interesting and well written story that just about any romance lover will enjoy. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
Iba a releer una escena y terminé releyendo el libro.
Este es de esos libro que objetivamente puedo reconocer que no es bueno, pero el angstttt. ------------------------------------------------ I want to love this author but for me there is too much action an little development.
I really love this series, but now to wait till January for Felicity book is killing me lol. Yet it is worth the wait. Must read series, get yours now.
One Summer of Surrender is book 3 in the 4 book series titled Seasons by Jess Michaels. This is an excellent series centered around Lord Stenfax and his siblings, so if you like a series that is tightly interconnected with a nice variety of tropes and plot lines, this is a series for you! I definitely recommend reading these books in order. Book 1 is Rosalinde and Gray's story. Book 2 focuses on Celia (Rosalinde's sister) and John Dane, a spy for the crown. Book 3 is Lucien, Earl of Stenfax (Gray's brother) and Elise, the Duchess of Kirkford. I'm about to start book 4, and that will be Felicity's story, Lucien and Gray's sister. But let's dive into book 3.
Elise has been to hell and back since she abruptly ended her engagement to the Earl of Stenfax to wed the Duke of Kirkford. But now that Kirkford has died, Elise has been left penniless and at the charity (and mercy) of the new duke. Unfortunately, he is no better than the last duke, lusting after Elise, and showing up at her dower house unannounced, often drunk and leering. Claiming to own her and all her possessions, he gives her ultimatums to submit to him and when she refuses, he publicly humiliates her. By doing so, he renders her unmarriageable, unapproachable, and alone. Trying to figure out a way to survive without the duke hovering over her, Elise visit's a pleasure club, and meets with Vivien, a matchmaker of sorts... one that matches mistresses to protectors. Reluctant to become a mistress but in desperate need of protection, and penniless in her own right, she believes this is the best solution to her problem.
Lucien never expected to be paired with Elise when he went to visit Vivien's club in search of some company. But here they are. Suddenly all the hurt, betrayal, lust, and passion hit full force. But Lucien refuses to let Elise back into his life, leaving her to fend for herself in the mess that she created. But passion still simmers between them. Is there any hope for Elise that it could lead to more with Lucien? Perhaps a fresh start to try again? Will Lucien entertain any thought of allowing her back into his life?
This was a very good story, and a pretty steamy one at that. If you have read books 1 and 2, you have seen Stenfax struggle with Elise walking out on their engagement so she could marry a wealthy, powerful duke. Lucien and Elise were indeed a love match, but now truths are starting to come out about why Elise left him the way she did. She also learns that Stenfax had almost taken his own life as a result and is horrified that her choices had led to that. But there is more to it. Elise has a story to tell, and though she has suffered, Lucien finds that he can't move on with Elise until she shares that part of her with him.
I really enjoyed how the author weaved this story and how the series has flowed perfectly from one book to the next. Definitely the advantage of reading an older series... all the books are available. You can just plow right through them, as I am doing. I also liked how Elise's story is finally told to the family all at once, not just to Stenfax. Nobody realized the horrors behind what had happened, but just assumed she had left Stenfax for money and a higher title. But Elise did it all out of loyalty to a family who had truly loved her, a family that she grew up with. And in her attempt to protect those she loved, she made difficult choices. I thought everything was explained very well and her reasoning for bringing it all to light sets up book 4 nicely. This book does have a happily ever after, but leaves a bit of a cliffhanger regarding Felicity that will be resolved in the next book. I'm very excited to read it.
I didn't find near the editing issues in this book as I had found in book 2, so that was good. I actually can't think of anything negative about this one, honestly. The writing is nice and tight, and the characters well-drawn. When Elise was looking for a protector and had agreed to become Winstead's mistress, Stenfax was the one to speak to him and break that agreement. I liked that Winstead was a gentleman and respected Elise enough to actually be a good guy about it all. If the series continued beyond 4 books, I would have liked to have seen more of Winstead. I also liked that Gray and Rosalinde are very involved in this book, and Celia and Dane become more involved at the end... Dane for his spy background, and Celia for the true friendship she and Stenfax have grown to share since their ended betrothal.
Steam on this for me sits at 3.5 flames. Like the other books, a few f*** and s*** words pop up here and there. I rate this book 4 stars. This story covers some heavier subject matter, including physical abuse (one incident on page), public humiliation, and attempted rape. There is also mention of Stenfax's attempted suicide.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
One Summer of Surrender, Book 3 of the Seasons series, was about Lord Lucien Danford, the Earl of Stenfax, and Her Grace Elise (why didn't the author provide a last name for her?), the Duchess of Kirkford. Friends since childhood and once betrothed to each other, Lucien received a letter from Elise in which she stated that she was ending their engagement and marrying the Duke of Kirkford for his money and higher title. Broken, Lucien had considered ending his life, though his brother and two of his best friends talked him out of it. However, he determined then to never let his emotions gain the upper hand. He even tried for an arranged marriage with his brother's new sister-in-law, Miss Celia Fitzgilbert, but that ended in another broken engagement. After three years and the death of her husband, Elise was near penniless thanks to the late Duke of Kirkford's cruelty. Having no other recourse, she went to Vivien Manning, the mistress matchmaker, to find a protector. Unknown to her, Lucien was also at the same place, looking for a temporary companion. The verbiage of the book was not in keeping with the 1800s speech, but rather more in line with the late 1980s and later. There was also an abundance of grammatical errors throughout the story. There were also several errors when addressing titles. Sometimes "Her Grace" was changed to "My Lady", which is never done in regards to a Duchess. The characters were less developed than in the previous books, and the author made Lucien out to be a bit of a weak, lily-livered speck of a man who had a hard time overcoming his feelings for Elise. Elise was made out to be weak as well, and neither character seemed to have much of a backbone, especially Elise. While there were plenty of steamy scenes, there really wasn't any romance or chemistry between the two main characters. Everything was focused on Elise trying to find a protector, Lucien's bedding her, and the constant danger she found herself in. There was no humor to alleviate the very heavy drama and angst either. This was a very fast-paced book that brought about more questions than answers from all the previous books as well as new questions from this one. It just brought about another cliffhanger, and I can't stand books like that. Either give me a HEA or give me one that ends badly...but END IT in one book! Unfortunately, this book did not earn a five-star rating nor did it merit a place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection. Here's hoping that the final book in the series answers the questions left by the first three books.

One Summer of Surrender is the third book in the Seasons series. Prologue set in 1808. The story begins in 1811. This is an emotionally charged historical romance. It’s quite angsty with an intriguing plot. The story-telling in this book is an unraveling of character motives that are sure to surprise the reader. It was a journey.
An Affair in Winter: 5 stars A Spring Deception: 4+ stars One Summer of Surrender: 4 stars
Lucien Danford, the Earl of Stenfax, has been engaged twice, but only in love once. Thrown over by his childhood sweetheart, Lucien was broken-hearted, a state that his brother Gray and sister Felicity don’t ever want to see him in again.
After three years of marriage, Elise, the Duchess of Kirkwood, is widowed. Three years ago Elise suddenly broke her engagement to the love of her life supposedly for a higher title and more money. But now Elise finds herself destitute so she is looking for a protector.
More than fifteen clumsy typos in this text which was a shame (eg. then instead of them, he instead of her, stray instead of straw, or missing words, etc)
I recommend this book. I highly recommend this series.
I started reading Jess Michaels' work when she still wrote as Jenna Petersen. Her regency romances never disappoint.
Gosh...Lucien and Elise's story had me from the first page. It was so emotionally charged I could feel Lucien's pain and the sting of betrayal he carried for years. He never got over Elise. Though he was hurt and wanted revenge he couldn't bring himself to do so because he never stopped loving her. I thought Elise reason's for breaking her engagement to Lucien were a bit overboard, but they were acceptable and believable due to the time period in which the story is set. The sexy times were super hot, but my favorite part was when Lucien lets his anger and frustration all out and they agree to open up and build their trust on each other again. That was a swoon-worthy moment.
Betrayal, sacrifices for true love, and reunited lovers are featured in this second chance romance. Lucien, Earl Stenfax, comes to the aid of Elise, the woman who'd jilted him and had driven him to contemplate suicide.
Three years after marrying a brutish duke, abandoning Lucien to do so, Elise is now a widow in need of a protector so she can escape her late husband's cousin. Circumstances keep putting her with Lucien and they have a few very passionate encounters. (There is almost too much sex in this story and there's a little sacrifice of character development in my opinion..)
Secrets don't stay hidden for long. Thankfully, Elise had reasons other than her parents forced her in to marrying the Duke. I felt he forgave her almost too quickly.
This is An emotional story full of angst. TW for suicide attempt.
Second Chance Love This is a near perfect second chance love romance! Elise was the perfect martyr heroine, sexy, caring, and smart. Lucien was romantic, damaged, and sexy. The reasoning for Elise marrying someone else was original and I thought well done. To be honest, I was expecting a classical Michaels’ contrived reason for her decision, but was happily surprised. I did not care for how Lucien took the news. He blamed her for not trusting him, yet he didn’t trust her enough to think “maybe there is a reason this person I’ve known my whole life and who has loved me for years decides out of the blue to become a fickle fortune/title hunter.” I was mad at Lucien for his reaction. I have read several of Jess Michaels books and I recommend her to fans of the genre who aren’t looking for anything truly original or life altering. This book was my in the series. WARNING: there is sex in this book, it is not erotica, but enough to be a steamy & hot adult romance. Please do not read if you are looking for something PG. Romance-5/5 Steaminess-4/5 Explicitness-4/5
I don't know what is missing from these stories to draw me in but I was bored the entire time I read this story as well as the first two in the bundle. Maybe I'm not in the mood for them or something but I usually love Jess Michaels's work so I pushed through. The stories are well written and intriguing but again maybe it was my mood.
Three years ago Elise abruptly broke her engagement to Lucien. Since then he and his family have hated her. Now her husband is dead and she needs a protector. Things are very complicated.
This is a steamy historical with a second chance for Lucien and Elise. So many feelings.
