THIS BOOK WAS REALLY GOOD OKAY. Epic, high-scale, high-stakes fantasy with some awesome lead characters and really great worldbuilding! I really, really enjoyed it!
Some more detailed thoughts:
-Jayden was good as a protagonist, but she didn't really have any of those qualities I haven't seen before. However, she wore it well, and I appreciated her depth and her attempts to be sacrificial. She was great.
-ETHAN THOUGH. Give me the tough-but-sweet and overly protective (but in a good way) guy any day. He has the magic ability to know when people are in danger and he essentially develops bonds with those he HAS TO PROTECT, which means that he and Jayden end up super close (by accident...whoops.) I enjoyed that immensely.
-RYAN WAS AWESOME. I wasn't expecting him to be as cool or as awesome as he ended up being and that was fantastic! Give me alllll the epic, sassy bois. Also his internal battle was brilliant and I can't wait to see where that goes next.
-Logan, too, was great. I admit I didn't quite follow on some of his backstory, since he had SO MANY kids and SO MANY enemies and all that. But beyond that...he was perfect. Absolutely perfect. The lead characters in this book were spot on.
-Of course, before I go on from characters, I do need to point out: there were TOO MANY. The first few chapters throw several dozen names at you, and most of the people in those chapters end up being either irrelevant or dead by the end of the chapter they're in. So while I could always tell which of the leads I was looking at, there were far too many side characters, and I feel like that number proooobably could've been pared down without too much trouble. For example: Ryan probably could have had two sisters instead of three. But oh well. Still a really good book--just TOO. MANY. PEOPLE.
-The worldbuilding, too, was fantastic. I definitely was a little confused from time to time, but for the most part, it was all very clear and well-written and unique.
-The concept of all the kids born a certain night was really really neat! I liked that! So unique!
-The villains were chilling and even if they weren't the big main Big Bads they were still awful and I appreciated that greatly.
-But I will say PLEASE DON'T KILL OFF A BUNCH OF CHARACTERS I HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO GET ATTACHED TO, PLEASE? It just doesn't help, especially when it only happens to set the protagonist off on their journey.
-Can I just say again...so many characters. xD
-Also I love really well done Christian fantasy.
This book was an absolutely epic ride and I loved it. I stayed up until 11 last night finishing it and if that doesn't say something about how good it is, I don't know what does (because I never do that, lol). It's not quite a new favorite, but I definitely need the sequel RIGHT THIS MINUTE. Loved this one ^_^

AH! Ok, I'm finally reviewing this. It's very telling of the story that over a week and a half later, I'm still thinking about these characters and scenes and such.
The basic plot is kind of the tropey "ancient trapped evil is rising and the chosen one must stop them". But I don't know, it felt kind of fresh. I like that there is not just one "chosen one" or Deliverer, but four, and the quest is more about finding all of them rather than heading right for the big bad. There was definitely a more immediate villain in this book, but she felt a little underdeveloped? Maybe because we just heard about her and didn't really get many up close and personal encounters with her. Which reduced the drama a little on the climax.
BUT! The characters! I really liked Jayden! (I have a small complaint about her in that she spent most of Ch 1 going on about how she can't kill anyone and then like 5 min later kills a dude out of self defense and then we never have any moral quandaries about killing again.) Ethaan! I kind of fell in love with this guy within 0.5 sec of his first POV chapter. lol! He's one of those characters you just have an instant connection with, and I loved it. All the characters are fantastic. I really enjoyed Logan, and his wolf, because being able to talk with wolves is just cool. And Ryan was so sweet and hilarious as well. I have a minor complaint about the love triangle thing, but I mean, we all know how it's going to turn out, and after reading book 2, it was handled well.
The world was so rich and vivid! I loved the concept of blood magic and all the powers. And there's telepathy with animals, and scary flying panthers. And unicorns! It makes my fantasy heart happy. Although with all the walking around and such, I'd have liked a map to help me orient myself.
The plot flowed really well and I kept flipping pages. It's a good thing I was stuck at home sick, because I read the whole thing in an afternoon, absolutely glued to the book. And immediately grabbed the second book.
I really loved the author's style, and it definitely makes me want to read more of her books! Highly recommend this book!

This book is amazing! I seriously stayed up way too late finishing it!
I've been dying to read it ever since it came out, and it didn't disappoint.
It is very easy to read, though there are a lot of characters introduced at the beginning. It didn't bother me, though, and the style was so clear I was never confused whose head I was in for the POV. The book focuses more on plot than character, which is actually a plus for me as far as personal reading preferences. :)
It is a Christian fantasy with more hints of Christianity than some Christian fantasy I've read. Many of the characters are struggling to trust the Creator and the path He has set for them.
The end...I would've been really heartbroken and hated the end, if not for the final epilogue. Now, I just really, really, really want book 2! Seriously!

Ugh. The feels... the feels. Are. Dead.
It wasn't as much of a massacre as the first time I read it. I couldn't even eat dinner that night because my stomach and my heart had somehow ended up tied into a knot. I nearly threw the book against the wall and rated it one star even though I had enjoyed it immensely, if it weren't for that epilogue... *sighs deeply because of pain*
I love all of the characters and here's a short list of what needs to happen in the next book: Logan and Rebekah need to make up. Ryan needs to find a nice girl. Ethan and Jayden need to end up I don't think I ask for too much.
I remember the first time I read this, being very confused for the first fifty chapters or so because there were so many characters. But hang in there! You'll come to love them all. Even the ones who don't make it *sobs*. There is some violence and lots of blood that might make someone with a weaker stomach squeamish. I grew up watching Lord of the Rings so I'm fine.
I have so many unanswered questions. Fortunately I have Amber Eyes on hand (finally- that was a cruel trick to play on me, Grimm, making me wait over a year for it).
I initially received a free copy of this book for review. But all opinions are 100% mine.

The cover of this book really got my attention and I saw a video on facebook showing DuPonce's attention to detail over this cover, that alone made me want to read this even though I knew nothing about the story. I also didn't agree with some of the low rated reviews so I decided to give this book a chance and I have to say it's better than I expected it to be.
Jayden is the most important character and the story starts out with her hanging out with her four brothers, training with her dagger. I liked her immediately because she hesitates to kill even though it will save her life and her brothers are adorable. Her brothers and parents are killed right in front of her and even though this story is full of violence, that beginning scene bothered me the most. The writing is sooooo good that the reader loves Jayden's family right away and their loss is tangible for the rest of the plot. Jayden isn't the same after their sacrifice, but it's a necessary part of her journey.
Then we meet Ryan, who is Jayden's betrothed, and he is nearly killed right away also. Jayden joins up with Anna, Logan and eventually Ethan who send her on a quest in an effort to save Ryan's life. As Jayden and Ethan get close, I wasn't satisfied feeling like this was a love triangle, one of my pet peeves in fiction. However, I came to realize that it isn't a love triangle and my heart wanted Ethan for Jayden.
There are wolves, a black lion creature, and a unicorn and only one of these creatures is with the good guys and they are ALL extremely dangerous, but it was fascinating watching how Logan, Jayden and Ethan battle these creatures.
I found it VERY interesting how the characters bond to wolves and how Anna bonds to the trees. Made every character in the story important to the plot, which reminds me of Narnia :)
Queen Idla is easy to hate, her soldiers are neverending, the story had me cringing as they were killed throughout the story, but nothing bothered me as much as Jayden's family being killed. There is a LOT of blood shed in this story, but I was so into what would happen next that it didn't slow down my reading. It felt like the movie Braveheart in a few scenes and Ryan loses blood as well as spits up blood while fighting for his life. Felt like that needed to be said for any sensitive readers out there.
I'm interested in knowing what happens to the assassins Thea and her sister, Kara....also want to know more about Rebekah and Connor. Was a little confused about Connor because it seemed like he turned into an animal in the end.
I was concerned about the type of magic in the story, but it's mostly healing herbs that get used and characters that communicated with animals they are bonded to. The nasty queen deals with dark magic, but it wasn't creepy for me (it's minimum), I was just nervous about the characters I loved being hurt or killed. Logan and Ethan really get beat up by the bad guys, Ryan suffers in the beginning, and it was challenging for me to see these young men so brutally dealt with, yet I understood that in a fight with good versus evil, violence does happen. Something happens at the end that had me shaking my head and thinking this better not happen or everything I hoped about this book will leave me unsatisfied, the ending is kind of a small cliffhanger but it left me with hope.
Yes, the chapters keep changing who the character is so you have to keep up, but it gets to the point where the main plot is about Jayden and Ryan so I don't believe this takes away from the story at all. The writing had me captivated from the beginning and overall I would say this is an impressive debut. I only recommend this book for fantasy readers but I think those who appreciate a fantasy book with characters who persevere against impossible odds will enjoy Grimm's storytelling style.

This book is INCREDIBLE! I had high hopes for it, and in the end it stole my breath away with how amazing it was. I read almost the entire book in one sitting, because every new chapter just got better and better.
I adored the characters so much! They're all so realistic and deep and complex. It was hard to keep track of all of them at first, but after the first half of the book, I worked it out and it was amazing. Ethan's a solid favourite though. Try change my mind. 😛
I honestly enjoyed this book so much. There was pain, laughs, almost-tears, happy squeals. The world building is stunning and so unique. I was so engrossed in this story the whole way through.

I can honestly say this book took me for an adventure. The feelings I felt strongly throughout most of it…slightly…changed near the end. I didn't expect that and it definitely caught me off guard. I'm not even quite sure what to be feeling going into book two. Nothing and no one are really as it seems. It will be interesting to see where things go next.
Ryan was definitely my favorite character and a lot of the upset feelings I had going on were about his story. I'm nervous to hope for what will happen for him in book two, but hopefully he gets what I feel he deserves. <3
The bond between animals and humans was awesome. One of my favorite things, especially how that bond affects both of them. I also liked a lot of the world-building aspects.
Curious and intrigued to read book two!

I pretty much devoured this book. The author does a great job of building suspense, raising tensions, and throwing in twists. I can't believe I have to wait for the 2nd book. She has some unique characters and an engaging plot. Everything a person could want in a good fantasy novel.

In the first chapter we are introduced to nine different people. But don’t worry about remembering them, seven are murdered by the end of the chapter.
In the second chapter we have more people introduced, but again, they are not to be remembered unless thugs and drunks are important. However, we do have a new narrator telling the story. A narrator who is used to introduce yet a third party who reasonably cannot be the first narrator as this is set in a two week time span prior to the first chapter. Which means in two chapters there is now a dozen or so throwaway characters and potentially three people telling the story.
Then we have these mysterious magic users who have different names who appear to be hunting down these –other- magic users that are the three narrators. Following? Good, because in chapter three we have more characters to be introduced to. Plus some of the magic users are actually non-magic users with magic items from the magical beings who want the children.

This is in third person point of view and jumps around to different characters throughout the story. I personally don't enjoy that when reading. The story line is enjoyable; we are seeing people that are marked hunted and finding why. It has loads of action and fantasy in it. The story line is catching. Making you want to know what happens and drawing you in for more. I got halfway through before I couldn't read anymore. The jumping around got to me. I enjoyed the idea of the story and all the characters are well thought out. If you can handle the jumping around to characters, enjoy fantasy and action, you should give it a try.

A thouroughly enjoyable ride, fast paced, edge of your seat book. Grabs your attention from the start, thechracters are instantly likeable and it’s such a fun , pick me up book.

Grimm throws you right into the action in Scarlet Moon, an action-packed story of love, heroism and revenge.
Love, because the overarching theme of this book seems to be that Love conquers all, especially Fear and Evil. She does have that little love triangle thing going on, but it's not so much a plot as a distraction. But Love here, in the more agape than eros kind, takes front stage centre, and makes every one do stupid things. Ryan, for instance, has to choose between his desire to protect his family or his beloved. Logan cannot face or confront his absconded wife. Ethan will protect Jayden at all costs. And Jayden, poor, stupid, heroic, annoying Jayden (I love her but boy, does she need a slap upside the head), is set on running away from everyone who would protect her because she loves them too much. Except if she does, the prophecy fails and EVERY ONE DIES. Right.)
Then there is revenge. Personal vendettas break from their confines every once in a while, with all the lovely tragic backstories making their appearances (sorry, I'm a sucker for tragic heroes), and whilst some of these get pushed aside momentarily to deal with current circumstances, you just know it's going to rear its head sometime in the future. Or in other (shorter) words, several characters have difficulty staying on course because they have a thirst for revenge.
AT ANY RATE. Scarlet Moon is a thrilling read for fantasy lovers.

Love, because the overarching theme of this book seems to be that Love conquers all, especially Fear and Evil. She does have that little love triangle thing going on, but it's not so much a plot as a distraction. But Love here, in the more agape than eros kind, takes front stage centre, and makes every one do stupid things. Ryan, for instance, has to choose between his desire to protect his family or his beloved. Logan cannot face or confront his absconded wife. Ethan will protect Jayden at all costs. Nope nope nope.
Got a quarter of the way through and couldn't deal with it anymore when I was introduced to yet another POV with little explanation about who any of the people are.
I'm a quarter of the way through and I haven't been told anything about the world, or what makes the people that are being hunted special. It jumps all over the place, one minute Jayden is training with her family, and I swear the next sentence she was on a horse and they were taking her to marry her off to some guy. There was no indication that this was the type of world where that happens. It could have been a modern setting for all I knew, but I'm having to guess (because you aren't told) that it's an old time fantasy world.
I'm, again, guessing that some people have powers in this world, and that's why they're being hunted. Not that you really see any of these you just have to believe what little you're told.
About 5 characters were introduced per chapter with no information about who they are, and why I should care about them. So I didn't care about them. Loads of terms for stuff in this world were just thrown about with not even a subtle amount of back story.
Not reading this won't be much of a miss because people with powers being hunted isn't exactly an original idea and I'll just reread the ten other books I've read on this story.

If only school didn't make reading take so long! I really liked this book. The beginning was especially well written and hooked me--i read the first half in a single day and whenever i got the chance between classes i would sneak chapters. There's a huge array of formidable villains, a cast of loveable heroes, and a world of really unique renditions of creatures. Super pumped for Amber Eyes (especially now knowing what the title is referencing ;) )

Strong fantasy isn't usually my first choice of genre, but I was requested to read this and it's quite a fascinating story once we grasp it.
It's not the easiest plot to latch onto at the beginning. The story is told in third person with five alternating points of view, so initially we are shuttled from one perspective to another without knowing what's going on. Since the characters themselves aren't even clear about the happenings elsewhere in their realm, it stands to reason that the reader won't be either, until enough time has passed that we begin picking up the threads of the fast moving story, with its deception, violence, loyalty and adventure.
There are several main characters but foremost is Jayden. The story starts when her beloved parents and brothers are slaughtered trying to protect her from aggressive soldiers who attempt to abduct her. Jayden was a child born on the night of the Blood Moon. These young people have distinct, identifying birthmarks and unique skills that set them apart from others. Evidence seems to indicate that the Feravolk people are behind the attacks, giving her good reason to hate them.
Jayden's fiance, Ryan, is seriously injured with a poisonous arrow as he helps her escape, setting her off on a quest to save his life. It's vital to get hold of a specific rare herb which only grows in the Valley of Hidden Ones, where she and her friends must contend with dangerous animals, including unicorns. They are also forced into the proximity of the corrupt queen's royal army, who really are responsible for the attacks on Blood Moon children.
Jayden's companions include her protector, Logan, who happens to belong to the Feravolk, and his wolf companion Westwind. For those who enjoy lovers' triangles, there are emotional moments when Ryan's brother Ethan joins them, especially since he is a dashing and heroic main character himself. Jayden has always known she's never felt passionately in love with his brother, so the stage is set for tension.
The monarch, Idla, deserves to take her place in the ranks of literary evil queens. She has her own selfish reasons for wanting to get hold of all the Blood Moon children, and sneaky ways of setting about it. Other members of her court include Franco, her despicable son, Oswell, her chief advisor, and assassins Thea and Kara, the 'Destruction Sisters'. Logan's wife Rebekah is also forced into the queen's service, along with their son Connor, for reasons the reader has to discover.
There is a dark fairy tale feeling about Soleden, the setting, and the characters are endearing with lively dialogue and heroic perseverance. This book is almost 400 pages long and there are sequels coming, so readers who enjoy long, epic fantasy adventures should be well satisfied. However, others may find it a challenge, trying to make sense of a world we don't understand, and being forced into the head spaces of people who do.

Oh, wow, I cannot express how much I loved this book! I think that this might just be my favorite read for 2016! I really enjoyed this epic fantasy by S.D Grimm and I definitely encourage reading this book, but I do warn that perhaps it would be best to wait till the second book comes out before doing so because of the particularly intense ending of this book.
When I first started reading this book, I was a little confused when characters kept popping out of seemingly nowhere and I think that I would have been better able to understand the characters and the beginning of the story if there had been a character list of some sort. But once I got to know the characters a little better I came to like them so much that the confusion that I had at first had was quickly forgotten. I especially enjoyed reading about Jayden the uncertain main character, her adult guardian Logan and his wolf Westwind, Jayden’s fiancé Ryan who was always trying to be the funny guy even at the darkest of moments, and the fierce protector Ethan (especially Ethan) who was the funny guy, and so, so much more- Sigh.
There was a bit of violence in this book- lots of blood. It didn’t really bother me much, but I can see how it could make someone with a weaker stomach squeamish.
And the ending… yeah the ending stopped my heart, ripped it out of my chest, and left me wondering Say what now? What just happened? But I highly encourage reading all the way to the end of the book before you throw the book against the wall and storm to your computer to give the book a one star rating like I was getting ready to do- there is an epilogue (thank heavens)!
I have to warn that this book ends on a cliffhanger- and quite an intense one for me too, and I cannot wait until the second book comes out. Please, Grimm, I’m on my hands and knees begging you, write the sequel fast! My poor nerves can’t take the suspense.

I’m doing a reread of this series, and I forgot how much I adore this story!! The characters, charm, heartbreak, and engaging plot all drew me right back in. Now I’m having to experience anew the pain of my split heart between Ryan and Ethan, but now I don’t have to wait to read Book 2 and 3!!! ^_^ *dives into the next book*

Classic, addicting fantasy where magic bonds animals to reluctant heroes born under the blood moon.
S.D. Grimm is a dear friend of mine, so I was nervous that when I read her debut novel, Scarlet Moon, it might not be my cup of tea. Not so, dear reader. It was a steaming cup of homebrewed, double-spiced chai with dark chocolate on the side.
If you love swords, wolves, magic, and a hefty dose of awesome characters, well, snuggle up to the fireplace, my friend. This cozy read will hit everything you love about the fantasy genre, while still being a unique and page-turning adventure.
POSITIVES
- Legitimately the most difficult decision between book boyfriends I've ever faced. Ryan and Ethan are both swoon-worthy heroes trying to protect the main character, Jayden—and they both have a claim on her heart. But this is far from your run-of-the-mill, eye-rolling groan fest of a love triangle. There's nothing immature or unrealistic about it. With different personalities, backgrounds, skills, and magic abilities, I still don't know which one of them I want to end up with Jayden. And I'm super picky, y'all. Normally I pick a team from page one. How does S.D. do it?
- A unique magic system where children born under the blood moon have unique magic powers (and they're legit).
- Squeaky clean. Yes, there's action and a side of delicious romance, but nary a curse word or inappropriate scene to be found.
- The feels. I just... can't... even. Spoilers prevent me from saying anything, but trust me—the feels.
- Talking wolves. Yes, please.
- Great descriptions of the settings and fights sucked me in without registering on my snooze meter.
NEGATIVES
- Classic tropes and cliches, including chosen reluctant heroes, ancient prophecies, and orphans, but hey, it gives the story a cozy feel in my opinion. There's plenty of unique aspects of the story to turn any cliche on its head, so I thoroughly enjoyed the book regardless. I mean, is it even possible to write a story without any tropes nowadays?
- Main character syndrome. The main character, Jayden, does some stupid things that had me white-knuckling the book and trying to yell at her through the pages. But honestly, if characters never made any headstrong decisions and sat on the couch with a bag of Doritos all day, it wouldn't make for good stories, hmm? I get the strong feeling that Jayden will learn from her mistakes and mature as a character throughout the series. Which is exactly what I love, so I'm totally willing to make the investment for an enrapturing end. Besides, I have no room to talk with a teenage boy like Darien being the main character of Sentinel. Ahem.
ADULT CONTENT
- Offensive language: None.
- Sexual content: Nothing beyond attraction and desire between an engaged couple, and a budding romance.
- Violence: Strong. Characters are injured and killed, and one injury is particularly nasty. But it's pretty much what you'd expect from an adventure novel where the main character is wielding daggers on the cover. If you've read The Lord of the Rings, you probably won't blink.
Highly recommended for fans of fantasy, especially the classics like The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings. Recommended for ages 14+. While the characters are older teens/young adults, any adult fan of the genre would love it.

By far, this is one of the best, clean, warrior, fantasy novels I've read in a long time. I loved the characters, the story world, and the plot was quite gripping. There's huge value given to the love of family, the loyalty of friends, and the importance of one's choices in following what they call their "Destiny Path."
In this tale, we generally follow the POVs (point-of-views) of four different characters: Jayden, Ryan, Ethan, and Logan -- with Jayden as the MC. Of the four, three of them are Children of the Blood Moon -- simply put, this means they were born the night of a Blood Moon, which marked them for life and gifted them with various talents. Among the Children, four are destined to be Deliverers, and are prophesied to deliver the realm of Soleden from the hands of the wicked Queen Idla, and ultimately the Mistress of Shadows.
I could go on, but I think I'd rather you just read for yourself. :] No need to spill the spoilers!
I will add this, however, while I greatly enjoyed the characters, the story itself, and the fantasy of it all, I began to grow tired of the constant skirmishes and sword-fights. Almost to the point where there were so many in such a short amount of time, I found myself skimming through much of the description. However, don't let that stop you from adding this to your TBR list! This is simply my opinion, and I enjoyed the tale regardless.

I've just finished the book and I'm speechless. Honestly, I don't even know what to say.
The first few chapters are a bit confusing, you're introduced to 5 different points of view, and it gets a bit annoying because you don't really care about any character, yet, and you're being pushed into their minds.
But has life would have it, I love that about the book. I love how you can see inside of everyone's head, that makes the book so much intimate. You feel their hate, their love, their strength. You don't fall for what others think of them, you fall for their thoughts.
~please note I will speak about the plot, if you want to remain unware of everything jump to the end~
Something I really enjoyed was that you meet every single one of Jayden's brothers, you learn to love them - seriously who wouldn't love them? - and in the spam of a few words, you loose them. But you know them! Normally you lose characters in the beginning of the book but it doesn't affect you, because you don't know them, you're not fond of them. But S.D Grimm, makes you love them! She makes you suffer within 1000 words. Then the same happens with Ryan and Ethan.
I'm in love with everyone, seriously, Logan, Jayden, Ryan, Ethan, Westwind - even Conor, I love them all.
They were amazingly built. They seem real. They... can't really put it into words. But they are all amazing. Their development throughout the story is also amazing. Even though it seems a bit out of place sometimes, it's all the author playing mind games and it has an explanation.
You know when you're reading and you get the feeling things aren't going in a good direction? Well with Scarlet Moon, the author tells you things aren't going in a good direction. She tells you: don't ship it, you'll get hurt, you'll get a heartache. Plain and simple. But what does she do? Makes you ship it.
People are going to die. You know that, your character is thinking that? What does the author make you cling to? Hope. Because, they'll be alright, right? They can't die, I love them to much.
But I really like that. It's different, normally an author would try to hide to make you want to read, but this one just tells you plain and simple and that's, surprisingly, more fascinating.

I just can't express enough how much I loved this book. I was really needing a book that made me fall in love after reading so many, that although good, didn't really get to me the way a book should. But this one did, it really struck my heart and made me not want to finish even though I was eager to find out the end.

But has life would have it, I love that about the book. I love how you can see inside of everyone's head, that makes the book so much intimate. You feel their hate, their love, their strength. You don't fall for what others think of them, you fall for their thoughts.

Something I really enjoyed was that you meet every single one of Jayden's brothers, you learn to love them - seriously who wouldn't love them? - and in the spam of a few words, you loose them. But you know them! Normally you lose characters in the beginning of the book but it doesn't affect you, because you don't know them, you're not fond of them. But S.D Grimm, makes you love them! She makes you suffer within 1000 words. Then the same happens with Ryan and Ethan.
I'm in love with everyone, seriously, Logan, Jayden, Ryan, Ethan, Westwind - even Conor, I love them all.
They were amazingly built. They seem real. They... can't really put it into words. But they are all amazing. Their development throughout the story is also amazing. Even though it seems a bit out of place sometimes, it's all the author playing mind games and it has an explanation.
You know when you're reading and you get the feeling things aren't going in a good direction? Well with Scarlet Moon, the author tells you things aren't going in a good direction. She tells you: don't ship it, you'll get hurt, you'll get a heartache. Plain and simple. But what does she do? Makes you ship it.
People are going to die. You know that, your character is thinking that? What does the author make you cling to? Hope. Because, they'll be alright, right? They can't die, I love them to much.
But I really like that. It's different, normally an author would try to hide to make you want to read, but this one just tells you plain and simple and that's, surprisingly, more fascinating.

I just can't express enough how much I loved this book. I was really needing a book that made me fall in love after reading so many, that although good, didn't really get to me the way a book should. But this one did, it really struck my heart and made me not want to finish even though I was eager to find out the end.
And now i'm left crying because ajhfsogs ogusgousghsjgsfsjbfsgkbskhfaohrfagbnmbfoasg. AND I DON'T KNOW IF SHE WILL MAKE ANOTHER ONE BUT I NEED ANOTHER ONE! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO MY BABIES! I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE OTHERS.

"Scarlet Moon" is Book One in the Children of the Blood Moon series by author S.D. Grimm. This YA Fantasy paperback is 382 pages. This is the first book that I have read by this author. Her writing style is nice. She has a flair for adventure and the fantasy world that is so popular today. Her story includes twists, action, intrigue, danger, and romance. This is a good verses evil story. There is some violence and fighting.
The characters, and there are many of them, are well balanced and defined so that it is easy to distinguish them. They come with lovable characteristics and flaws. Some are likable while others are not so much.
This is the tale of Jayden. She is just one of the many born on the night of the Scarlet Moon. Those born then have a unique birthmark and special skills. Logan is Jayden's and has a wolf named Westwind. Ryan is Jayden’s fiancé Ryan who provides comic relief. He is a likable character. These are just a few of the many characters. Throw in a protector and Queen for even more action and drama.
In the book, someone is seeking the Children of the Scarlet Moon. They are destroying their villages and their families. The children are being captured. It has been prophesied that four of the children will deliver them from this horror. Jayden might be one and is on the run. She makes new friends. Learns if she can or cannot trust people. Determines what a Deliverer is and races against time.
The stakes are high in this cat and mouse game. The lives of the Children of the Scarlet Moon are in danger as is the future of the world. Using their specials the children prepare and battle their evil enemies.
This is a fast paced book that ends with a jaw dropping cliff hanger! It makes readers want Book Two, now! I would recommend this to anyone that enjoys fantasy. It is a bit too bloody for elementary children. It is for older teens and young adults. I am a grandmother so I rated the book from the viewpoint of my teenage niece and nephew, which I feel confident in saying would be a 5 out of 5 stars. I have passed the book to them. I was given the book by Book Fun (The Book Club Network) and this is my honest review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. S.D. Grimm’s story world is both well thought-out and complex, but not so foreign that readers aren’t able to understand it. It has a classic fantasy feel to it, but the tropes are used in interesting ways. Jayden, for example, is no damsel in distress—but she’s not without her personal issues that just might put her in need of rescuing at times. While there are several point of view characters, they each have their own unique voices, so once you know who’s who, it’s really fun to watch the puzzle pieces come together. The characters are all written in such a way that you want to spend more time with them, and you want them to succeed.
Grimm has a good balance of narrative and action, with a lot of tension throughout. Plus, there’s just enough of a romantic ‘will-they-won’t-they?’ woven in to add depth and excitement without taking away from the main task of the plot. By the time I got to the end, I was left in desperate need of finding out what will happen to Jayden and company in book two! I recommend it to anyone who enjoys sword and sorcery and high fantasy—and fun (and sometimes terrifying) magical creatures.

Interesting fantasy, with a faint allusion to Christianity. I didn't actually read the whole story, as I wasn't interested in the building love interests. I think it would appeal much more to a younger audience though.

Really great concept, but execution was so-so. Action scenes felt disconnected and hard to follow. But I enjoyed the characters and their relationships most of the time, and would like to know what happens in book two.

When Jayden’s village is attacked, she is forced to flee with her wounded fiancé into the Forest of Legends, where she finds she is part of a distant prophecy.
Ethan avoids getting attached to people, because part of his Blood Moon talent involves an overwhelming urge to protect his loved ones. But when he meets up with Jayden, who happens to be engaged to his adoptive brother, will he be able to resist the connection that will try to form between them? And will Jayden accept the role handed to her by the Creator, or will she run away?
Scarlet Moon is an engaging and original read. Despite containing many of the standard fantasy tropes, the story uses them in an original way. Sure, there is the strong independent female protagonist who tries to do everything on her own, and doesn’t want other people to try to protect her. But her motivations are that she doesn’t want her loved ones to get hurt, rather than from any sense of pride. And while she begins the story with this attitude, [SPOILERS] by the end she has come to accept the actions of those who are trying to help her.
The protagonists in the book are all fairly likeable. Jayden is sometimes a bit much, but in general the reader is able to care about her. Ethan is quite a likeable male protagonist, though he starts out rather shifty. That being said, it was a little much when the two of them [SPOILER] felt such an instant attraction to one another, especially since they were trying to save the life of Jayden’s fiancé. Logan and Ryan are good supporting characters, though Logan may stray into main-character territory somewhat. His character doesn’t see a whole lot in the way of development, at least not that the reader is privy to. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t grow as a character; he does. We just don’t see a whole lot of it. At one point he’s grumbling over his role as a Protector for the prophesied deliverers, trying to come up with a way to pass the responsibility off to someone else, but at some point in the story he decides to accept his role. The process of his change of heart isn’t necessarily well-documented, though perhaps there was so much going on that the instances slipped past this reviewer’s notice.
The book reads well, and there are few, if any, dull moments. Sometimes the story is so fast-paced that one wonders if the author isn’t skipping large segments of time. There are a few places where the writing seems rushed and sloppy, but the characters and the action make up for it more often than not. The story itself is filled with just the right amount of tension to keep the reader glued to the book, and yet not so much that one can’t take it and feels the urge to skip ahead a few pages to see what happens. I personally read about half of it in one sitting, staying up until after three o’clock in the morning before finally calling it quits for the night.
The book ends on a bit of a cliff-hanger, though it also has some good closure, making it feel complete in itself (though there is definitely more story to be told). One of the characters [MAJOR SPOILER] appears to die toward the end of the book, but if the reader is paying enough attention, they will know that any half-way decent author wouldn’t have killed off this particular character at this point because there is too much setup throughout the story for him or her [SPOILER AGAIN!] (it is also revealed at the very end that the character is not, in fact, dead).
It will be interesting to see where the story goes from here, but one thing can be said of it. It certainly holds the reader’s thoughts while being read. It is one of those stories that causes speculation after the fact as to certain characters’ motivations and what they might say or do later on in the story. S.D. Grimm may not be the most polished of authors out there, but she certainly knows a thing or two about drawing people in to a tale, and how to hold them there even after the last page has been read.

This book did have potential, and I respect how some people would really enjoy it but I just didn't get on with it.
The narrative was choppy and inconsistent, and there was a severe case of character overload near the beginning. I don't mind if a novel switches from one characters POV to another, but this novel jumped around so much it was just hard to keep track of what on earth was going on.
One minute Jayden is with her brothers, then she's off to get married, then she's in the middle of a wood, then she's learning about some special destiny then she's going off to rescue someone and there's half a dozen other characters related to her and connected with other characters.
Again, I don't mind complex stories, as long as I know what on earth is going on, and with this. I just didn't. There were too many disparate threads and loose ends, and throwaway characters. It wasn't so much like a ball of wool as a clump of tanged unidentifiable fabrics thrown together into a bag and shaken up.
I found it hard to care for the characters since I could not remember who half of them were, or how they were connected to the others or even significant. Character development was almost non - existent. There was meant to be a major theme in the story, which I don't remember the characters even talking about at all except in one scene towards the beginning.
There were entire chapters consisting entirely of dialogue which were meant to be either "fillers", or let the audience know what was going on, but I was just as clueless afterwards.
I also didn't care for the tone and the setting. It was meant to be some vaguely "Medieval" type fantasy world, but it wasn't credible at all. In fact, it just came over as trite and contrived. Seriously, not EVERY fantasy story has to be set in some fake Medieval world. A steampunk version of the Wild West might have been a better setting for of this story.
The character's language didn't fit it at all. They're supposed to speak like modern American teenagers, replete with "teen slang". The most frequently used words were "kids" and "guys". I just found it grating.
Jayden and Ethan actually kind of reminded me of Finn in the Star Wars sequels, famous for incessantly shouting "Rey!" except they were incessantly saying "Are you Okay?". After running or fighting, or looking for someone, even when I had no idea who they were talking to or why they were concerned about them.
Still the novel wasn't entirely without merit. I think at the end I grasped something of the story and it did improve, but I should not have had to wade through 250 pages to get to that point.
