Firecaller #1

Fire Mage

Rate this book
In a land of strange beasts, haunted forests and fiery magic the Fire Mage is a legend no one believes in any more.

Especially not Jena, an orphaned ex-slave who’s finally found a safe haven with her master and mentor, the Great Mage Thornal. When royal assassins murder Thornal while trying to steal his powerful Book of Spells, Jena vows revenge on the man responsible—Prince Lothar, the next king of Ignisia.
It’s a dangerous quest that will likely mean her life, but Jena has help in the form of her master’s familiar, an enormous raven, and also her own—completely forbidden—mage skills. If she can keep her secrets hidden, she might just get close enough to Lothar to obtain justice for Thornal’s death.
Meanwhile failed mage Nate is a salt collector in the notoriously dangerous volcano mines, using his unique ability to call demons to keep himself alive. He emerges from his latest run to find everyone at the outpost dead, and royal assassins waiting to finish him off. He barely escapes with his life, but his elation is short-lived—Prince Lothar is convinced Nate is a threat to his claim to the Flame Throne of Ignisia, and will stop at nothing to eliminate him.
When Nate and Jena meet, they’re literally heading in different directions. But destiny—and the prophecies of the last Fire Mage—throws them onto the same path. They must work together if they are to save the kingdom—and themselves—from the machinations of a ruthless royal prince.

Two unlikely heroes, one unscrupulous prince, and a swathe of dark and mysterious beasts—who will survive this encounter?

Good story

Story was well written and continued to hold my attention. Enjoyed the characters and good cliff hanger at the end.

This is a very action oriented story - close to non-stop. The plot is reasonably well laid out. The character development is first-rate. The only real draw-back was the often repetitive backstory. The two main characters are worried and fixated on their past. That part is believable and well done. The problem is trying to read through the same worries and angst over and over again. I realize that there are people like that in real life, but most don't continue to doubt themselves in the middle of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. That being said, I learned to quickly read the backstory and worry-wort sessions in order to get on with the story. It seems that it is important to the author to have heroes that are hobbled to their past and I like the effect. I just wish the heroes would reveal something a little more each time they return to their fears instead of repeating it so much.

Maybe 3.5 stars because the writing is pretty pedestrian, but the characters are strong and I was sufficiently engaged to want to immediately start the sequel. A good, solid, almost old-fashioned bildungsroman fantasy from two perspectives, and both are interesting, and both characters to some extent "come of age" by the end. The stage is set now for a rip-roaring "let's get rid of the evil threatening our kingdom" plot in the second one.

3.5⭐️ really
It’s an engaging story but felt very barebones with the characters making decisions based on very vague info or even in single events (doesn’t seem credible, basically)
The plot is your regular fantasy good vs evil with unpredictable situations and that’s fine.
The characters weren’t bad, but, again, their personalities changed very quickly and it felt like there was a lot left unsaid (and it’s not a particular short book so we could have spent more time developing them)

In general, well written, but I found myself confused by the writing several times, needing to go back and read a page or two because something I would read contradicted my interpretation of something written earlier. But I liked the story and the characters.

I would actually rate it a 3.5, but went with a 4 because I am looking forward to another book in the series.

A well written and enjoyable book, except for one thing that always annoys me - it was very repetitive. Obviously authors think their readers can't remember things that have been said a number of times before, and feel they need to keep repeating them! (I know, sarcasm...) But for a book that could have been 5 stars, it was very disappointing. It was also a long book at nearly 400 pages, and could have been made shorter by removing some of the repetition.

Loved it!

I first "met" Trudi Jaye through her carnival series, so I knew this book had to be great, and it is! Four adventurers must keep one of their own safe to become king. Lots of attention grabbing action that kept me reading straight through.

Fire Mage

Really good book. Fire Mage is basically a book about good vs evil. Jena and Nate are both fire mages trying to defeat an evil mage trying to take over the kingdom. I enjoyed following their path of twists and challenges of the horrors they faced.

Good start

The book is complete - no cliffhanger. It doesn't answer all of the questions that i have. Hopefully, they will be answered in the next book

I love all of Trudi Jaye’s books, and Fire Mage did not disappoint! I enjoyed every scene in each of Jena and Nate’s separate journey, and I love when they finally met. I also loved that Nate has a raven tattoo on his face and Jena’s tattoo moves along her body. It makes me want to get another! I also can't wait for more of Lothar because he is turning out to be one of those villains that I love to hate!

The end has me eagerly anticipating what Remus has in store for the group! I'm not sure which I hope for first—this sequel or the one for Hidden Dragon!

I received a free copy of Fire Mage and volunteered to review it.

Good book

Interesting characters, fast paced, good action and cohesive plot. Will definitely get the next book in this series, and the ending was decent, not a total cliff hanger.
