Something About You

Rate this book
Love happens when you least expect it.

Dre’s life falls into a nice, predictable rhythm and that’s the way she likes it. But when an adorable, fashionable 20-something bursts into Dre’s flower shop to cancel her wedding order after her fiancé’s change of heart, Dre finds a distraught young woman on her hands. She doesn’t have the heart to shove her out of the shop, so she takes her out for sympathy and tea. The idea of befriending this woman who is clearly her opposite, however, is the last thing on Dre’s mind.

Kelsey feels awful for canceling the order, but she’s sincere when she tells Dre she wants to be friends. When she offers to make up the loss by using Dre’s services for a major project at work, Kelsey sees a chance to get to know the woman who represents the life she’s always wanted for herself. And as Kelsey gets closer to Dre, she proves to her that they aren’t so different.

Will Dre take a chance and break out of her comfortable routine to find love in an unexpected place? And will Kelsey finally embrace the life she’s always dreamed about? Or will this budding flower of romance be cut short before it blooms?

“Something About You” is the first audiobook I’ve listened to narrated by Lori Prince. WOW! How have I not yet listened to any of her books? She currently has 25 books on audible, and many are lesfic books that are on my wish list!

Prince does a fantastic job, and I enjoyed the book because of her narration. But, her narration is the best part of the book. What starts out as a cute story somehow never really finds it’s way. Partly it’s the story, and partly it’s the characters.

MC Kelsey is broken hearted when her fiancé (a man) breaks off their engagement at the last minute, and leaves Kelsey to scramble around town canceling the wedding arrangements. One task includes canceling the flowers. MC Dre, the florist, feels badly for Kelsey, and offers to not charge her, and then closes the shop to take the crying Kelsey to a coffee shop to lend a sympathetic ear. Now THAT’S customer service!

Well, adorably gorgeous Kelsey is determined to make up for Dre’s financial loss, so she hires her to provide flowers for a magazine photo shoot. Kelsey is also determined to become Dre’s friend. Kelsey is also desperate to become a “real” journalistic editor, and escape the fashion editor role that her boss won’t let her escape. Hence Kelsey’s initial attraction to Dre, someone kind, completely removed from the fashion industry, and even disdainful of fashion.

Dre initially thinks of Kelsey as a Barbie doll character, knows that she’s straight, but agrees to accept the business order, and reluctantly agrees to continue seeing Kelsey as a friend. As Dre gets to know Kelsey, she realizes her first impression was wrong, Kelsey is not a bubble-headed blonde bimbo. Further, it turns out that Kelsey is straight…until she’s not.

Well, Kelsey’s high-fashion friends don’t think much of fashion-less butch Dre (and vice versa), for all her good intentions at wanting to be a serious editor, Kelsey is kind of a willing doormat, and when Dre steps in to stand up for Kelsey, everything really goes off the rails. We have inappropriate anger, major miscommunication, major non-communication, and an HEA that really just had me scratching my head, thinking “really?”. Oh yeah….don’t even get me started on Kelsey visiting her ex-fiancé, and his nutty mother!

I recognize that I’m rambling a bit incoherently with this review. I made the mistake of not writing a review soon after finishing the book (which I did a month ago). Audible somehow managed to delete all but one of my bookmark notes (one minute I was looking at them, and the next they were all gone except one!). With most books I enjoy I can remember enough about why I liked the book that I can write a review even with few notes, but with books I don’t enjoy much I tend not to clutter my brain with details of the book. Yes, I know, which is why I shouldn’t let my “currently reading” list get up to 12 books as I recently did!!

So the first part of the book is probably a 3.25*, most of the rest of the book is perhaps 2.5*, and the extended angsty non-communication period and unbelievable ending was a 1.5*. The narration was 5*, though, and even as I was boarding an airplane before finishing “Something About You” I bought another Prince-narrated book, and requested a review copy of another! So while the book probably averages 2.41*, I’m rating the audiobook as 3*.

OMG...where do I begin with this book? My Creative Writing professor would have had a field-day with this. The story moves at breakneck speed and is not well thought out. The characters are shallow and not well developed. FYI..."straight" women do not flip a switch and suddenly (and I do mean immediately after being dumped by a man) become gay. I considered abandoning the book but soldiered through hoping it would get better...it never did. There are three words that sum up this book: WTF????????

I loved this. My first by Jea Hawkins, the writing and real life experiences displayed really resonated with me, as seen by the many excerpts I've included below.

Simple story, Kelsey comes into Dre's flower shop to cancel the order for her wedding, her fiance has just broken it off by text. As Kelsey feels bad for cancelling the big order, she offers Dre a gig doing the flower display for a photo shoot for the fashion magazine she's the editor for. The romance is beautifully done with lots of life lessons along the way.

5 stars for me, it hit all the right spots. Ebook from Smashwords.

“Wow. That’s kind of ignorant. Happiness
isn’t tied up in another person, male or female or whatever. It’s
for us to find on our own.” pg 56

“All that mattered was she had
finally found a person who understood her and didn’t love her as
the person she appeared to be, but as the person she was.” pg 123

“In fact, that’s what I love about you – you let
me know what you want. I think if you work on doing that with
others, you’ll find yourself in a place where you’re much
happier.” pg 124

“She loved food,
especially home-cooked meals. It was one of the reasons she was
happy to spend more and more time at Dre’s place. Sure, the
cuddling and making out and sex were all fantastic, but the dinners
and breakfasts were a wonderful part of the relationship deal.” pg 149

“But happiness isn’t for someone else to
decide for another person,” Kelsey said, raising her gaze to
Laura’s face. I don’t think she has any
problem being happy, except when someone she loves tries to impose
their ideas of happiness on her.” pg 154

“Well, you’re
right. I don’t want to be that wife, waiting at home with the kids.
I want to have my career because I’m passionate about doing what I
love, and it’s hard enough to fight for what I want in one place
without having to fight for what I want in a marriage.” pg 200

“She regretted ever getting involved with
Kelsey.
But she knew if she didn’t get back together
with her, she’d regret that even more.” pg 207

“Hi.” Kelsey took a step forward. “Um, I’m
here to order some flowers for a wedding.”
Clearing her throat, Dre asked, “Sure.
Whose?”
“Ours.” ” pg 209

Soooo, I wasn't all that fond of this. The fact that the narrator, Lori Prince, did a good job with the narration meant I made it through, but the story left me pretty cold. It's basically a meet cute and some sex scenes. There's some flirting and an attempt to give the story some depth by looking at how the pretty blond is so much more than her appearance would suggest, but since the romance is so rushed none of it really works.

My main issue was elsewhere though. I had some major problems with Kelsey's character. The story begins when her male fiancée cancels the wedding at the last minute and she comes into Dre's flower shop to cancel the flower order and breaks down. Dre offers her some friendly support. Kelsey is obviously presented as straight. Toward the end of the book, she's still referred to as straight. But the reader is never given even a moment in which she considers her identity or sexuality before she aggressively pursues a lesbian relationship. None. If someone goes from identifying as straight to something else—bi-sexual, lesbian, whatever—I would expect there to be at least a moment of, "Oh, I guess I'm not as straight as I thought." I don't need a lot of angst, but a little consideration for sure.

This was all compounded by the fact that Kelsey repeatedly went on about how she'd always wanted to try this or do that. But the things she wanted to experience were basically Dre's life, lesbian lives. It made her feel like she was just playing dress up with Dre's identity, a lesbian identity. I expected it would be the sort of thing she'd later chortle about with her suburban mommy-friends, "That time when I was young and adventurous and dated a woman." It didn't feel serious or real.

All in all, the writing was ok and the narration was good, but the story was uncomfortable at best.

Enjoyable novel about an improbable couple.

Dre and Kelsey meet when Kelsey's martial plans unravel. Dre is the florist for the doomed wedding. Kelsey's fiance bails on their nuptials via text message. Kelsey latches onto Dre as her world crumbles and a fast friendship develops.

The pacing of this novel is very fast. A new friendship quickly becomes a loving relationship between the two women. The novel would have benefited from a longer timeline with greater chance for character development. Still it is a fun story with a likeable cast of characters. Any rough edges were handily smoothed over.

Good book

I enjoyed the story and it was nice to see the cute blond doing the chasing. I liked that it wasn't your typical romance book where from the first moment they meet they have to be together. There were ups and downs and miscommunication.

Loved It

I read a lot of lesbian romance and erotica. I think the best novels have a balance of interesting characters developing complex relationships and steamy sex, and Something About You nails it.

This is my first read for Jea Hawkins, but it definitely won't be my last.

Easy, warm, and comfortable reading

This book put me in my happy place. Not long, or hard to get through. Soothing, made me smile. Plan on reading more from this author.

Disclaimer - I'm adding just about every book I read in 2016 to Goodreads in December. I probably read this in... November.

I read a ton of lesbian romance novels on Kindle Unlimited this year. I have no idea why. Probably because they were free? All of them were of decidedly average quality, and most of them mesh together in my memory. However, this one kinda stands out because, despite having one of the better covers, I was incredibly underwhelmed by both of the characters and their romance. I thought ... ugh, their names ... the florist? Was both overly aggressive and wishy-washy which was confusing. What a weird and unrealistic combo. She was super sexual, non-committal, but then suddenly pissed when Kelsey - who previously was straight - wouldn't change her life/attitude about independence for her. AFTER LIKE A MONTH AND SLEEPING TOGETHER MAYBE ONCE.

I thought Kelsey's character didn't make much sense either, similarly with conflicting personality traits, but just kinda went along for the ride. I was already accepting one makes-no-sense character and couldn't handle the mental work of criticizing both of them.

I don't really see what either saw in each other; it seemed more like a romance we're just seeing the beginning of that would for sure end in tears in a year or so. I.e., based on hormones and initial attraction. Way too much early 20's "Oh, a lesbian who is really cute is INTO ME!" titillation on Kelsey's part, and the attractive idea of a partner who understands and supports you for a change. From Dre's side, seems like a classic case of falling in love with a mostly-straight girl, then trying to change everything about her, making a lot of assumptions, ending up with your heart broken.

Usually, I don't care what happens to characters AFTER the romance. I mean, getting them together is the intriguing part - the part we're reading the book for - and usually, they are so happy and we've been waiting so long for them to be together that it's almost believable - or at least just satisfying - to accept the happily ever after and let your brain close this case. In this instance, I just kept thinking "I saw this couple in college and it did not end well...."

First Impressions (an audio review)

We all form snap impressions of the people we meet. Kelsey’s impression of Dre is a slightly older woman whose generosity knows no bounds. She offers Kelsey a port in the horrible storm the young woman is enduring – after having been dumped by her fiancé a mere week before the wedding. Dre is the florist, and could charge Kelsey for the cancellation, but she’s an empathetic person who sees someone hurting and not only waives the charges, but takes the young woman out for a chocolate croissant.

Dre’s first impression of Kelsey is of a younger blonde bombshell party girl. She’s wearing the current fashions and is clearly trend-savvy. She’s beautiful, even through her tears. And nothing like the sensible Dre. Somehow, though, over tea, Dre gets to see more of the real Kelsey and when the woman comes with a business proposition, Dre takes the chance. The physical attraction is real, for her anyway. And opposites might attract, but why would a woman like Kelsey want someone like Dre? (For the record, thirty-two is not over the hill – I was surprised the author made Dre that young and then stuck her with a staid and dyed-in-the-wool personality.)

The chemistry between the women is palpable and they begin a relationship. I was cheering them all the way because Dre needed some vitality in her life and Kelsey needed a solid friend who wasn’t just a party girl obsessed with butt-stuff (which I guess is a thing…).

I enjoyed this book for its simplicity and yet its heartfelt emotions. I rooted for the women to succeed in their relationship. I embraced the dark moment because I was sure they would come out the other side. I rejoiced in their happiness because they deserved to be together. All in all, it was a wonderful book. I’ve come to expect as much from Jea Hawkins and I was not disappointed.

Lori Prince is the narrator for this book and she did another solid performance. This duo works well together and I’ve enjoyed all their books, especially As Long as Love Lasts. Can’t wait for the next book.

I have so many things i wanna complain about this book and I literally drop if after 20% of reading. First, no girl would be thinking about kissing a complete random stranger after their fiancee dumped them. Yet kelsey, literally the straight one keep feeling those things. Sec I hate the amount of words bimbo, dumb blonde and fashion were in this book. I dont mind it at first but it’s getting annoying when kelsey keep repeating those words every single time. and why do author act like its a bad thing. I bet theres someone out there who’s literally blonde, loves fashion and a little bit dense yet probably living her best life. Like please watch legally blonde omg. Third i hate the cliche part “ oh i never met someone like you, you’re the only one understand me” bullshit. I hated how kalsey treats her friends who’s mayb she doesn’t like that much but still, she keeps bitching about them n her friends aren’t even that bad. Theyre just a bit wild and funzies and mayb still cant let go of their college years but most of the time theyre just legit friends who care. And if you don’t like them so much just say so to them gawd. I hate it when u act like yourself and talk with ppl you thought were your friends but then they bitching about you to someone else. Like why kalsey gaf if her friennds love partying and fucking. Shes act like she’s better than anyone and keeps insisting she wants to be friends with dre cause shes older and mature so she must know her best.

I bet if I finish this book there’s must more that i have problems with. So mid

I really enjoyed "Must Love Chickens" from the author. When i saw lori prince narrated another book from the author, I picked it up. Her narration is top notch as always, for the more mature dre and the more child-ish kelsey. Unfortunately, I don't like this story as much. For me, I think it was a bit more about the pacing of the relationship. Kelsey's rich football-quarterback fiance breaks up with her shortly before their wedding. Then the straight girl rebounds onto Dre, and pretty soon they're engaged. The side characters are incredibly side-lined (kelsey's friends, kelsey's fiance, etc). If it annoys you, then you probably wouldn't like the book. However, you can still enjoy the book if you don't take it at face value and instead just try to enjoy the scenes. There are some cute scenes of them, various fluff, and only minor (though contrived) conflicts they face together, and it ends on a happy note.

Something About You

I enjoyed the first 89% of this book. It was a great story of meeting, getting to know you, dating & falling in love a little too quickly. But it was enjoyable. I liked both of the characters. I didn’t like the requisite misunderstanding/argument/break-up at 89%, followed by a make-up at 98%. I know, most books have this and for most books, it’s just not needed.

This is my first Book by Jae Hawkins and unfortunately the writing style is not convincing to me. The characters are simple and the story is kind of boring. The Story is about business, toaster oven and age-gap.

Audiobook With five and a half hours it is a relatively short audiobook, nevertheless it feels endless to listen to.
Inspite of all the narrator Lori Prince does a great job. Unfortunately a good voice actor can't always save a boring story.

Great read

I enjoyed this book immensely. Love can happen when you least expect it and with an unexpected person. It's not how you start it's how you finish. When you find the one that understands you, sees you for your flaws and all hold tight. I would recommend this for a very enjoyable read.

Perfect romance

Yes! Give those women a meaningful life. The story line was written so good that it took over and I saw the whole thing unwind before my eyes. To read a book and feel as though you are taking part in the issues faced by both was thrilling. Dre and Kelsey were so different yet so compatible is was wonderful. Well written and easy to follow.

Short story about finding out that you don't like the way things are going.

A failed marriage attempt brought short with a text. How cruel is that? A return of gifts results in a possible new beginning. A blonde who knows what she wants and doesn't like it when someone tells her what to do. Enjoy!

I'm so disappointed. The start of this book was so good and i was so excited but with how much I was reading I was becoming more and more bored.

I wish there were more about Kelsey's sexuality and her journey on it.

I hated the judging based on stereotypes and I didn't had a lot of feelings towards Dre's character

Just meh

Great characters

Great characters with great chemistry and more depth than expected, which is actually part of the plot! The fact that this statement extends to at least one of the minor characters makes it even more impressive.

I tried.

I read Must Love Chickens which I really liked. I tried this title hoping for more of the same. Sadly, I just couldn't believe the entire story line. I nearly out it away on two occasions, but felt if invested my time slugging thru half of it so held out for hope. Nope.

The characters felt unrealistic to me. Their relationship needed development. The whole thing feel flat.

I didn't look to see if this was the authors first book. I'd recommend the other title though. And I hope the subsequent titles will continue to evolve. This story just needed more work to be believable, in my opinion.

Sweet story

This was a very sweet story between Dre And Kelly. The way the author has developed these tow characters was very well done. Very believable and a very enjoyable story. Well done. Looking forward to more books by this author!
