This is a varied collection of spooky-themed story, penned by some of the most infamous of classic authors. I found the tone of each piece varied, as did its contents, and enjoyed the journey this brought the reader on. The stories could be read back-to-back, with no fear of boredom ensuing or repetition discovered, and I immensely enjoyed my afternoon of devouring these. A full review of six of these tales can be found here. As these were a recent reading for me, I skimmed these stories, in this particular anthology, and focused on those new to me. These were:

The Masque of Red Death - 4.5/5 stars

Man-Size in Marble - 3/5 stars

The Canterville Ghost - 3.75/5 stars

Mrs Zant and the Ghost - 5/5 stars

The Lady's Maid's Bell - 4/5 stars

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow - 5/5 star

I loved this collection of short stories, some were very good, some were not so much, but will definitely give you chills reading on a cold and dark Halloween night!

The Signal-Man by Charles Dickens
I quite enjoyed this short story by Dickens, of a man with insomnia that meets a lonely signal-man who is haunted by a ghostly figure but to what end?

Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad by M.R. James
In this short story the main character finds a whistle whilst having a short break. No harm ever came of blowing a whistle did it?

The Body Snatcher by Robert Louis Stevenson
In the early stages of the medical education in anatomy real bodies were used to learn about the human body, but how far are people willing to go to acquire these bodies?

The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe
When a plague invades the kingdom, whats the best thing to do... Go and shut yourself off and have a party of course! Will this action be enough to avoid the Red Death?

The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs
Whilst I have seen parodies of this story before this is the first time I have actually read the original and found it did not disappoint. A story reminding us to be careful what we wish for....

Man-Size in Marble by E. Nesbit
This was a cleverly written short story, and to say this was originally written in 1893 I find this still as unsettling as I imagine it would have been then read by candlelight. I will never look at a marble statue in the same way again!

The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde
I found this a brilliant story of a new family moving into a mansion complete with resident ghost who is not impressed. Despite the ghosts best efforts, the family remain skeptical of his existence. Will the family acknowledge the ghost or will his efforts to be left in peace be in vain?

The Old Nurse's Story by Elizabeth Gaskell
An old run-down mansion with a mysterious past, this is a short story you can imagine the old Nurse telling you this story on a darkened Autumn night.

Mrs. Zant and the Ghost by Wilkie Collins
This was more a suggestive of ghosts and supernatural than an out and out ghost story. But still was very good, set in Victorian/Georgian times a widower who is now under the care of her brother in law seemingly still feels the presence of her husband. Is this true or has the death of her husband upset her mind?

The Lady's Maid's Bell by Edith Wharton
A new maid joins the household, but something seems a little off, why does no one talk about the old maid? This was a page turner of a short story, definitely gave me a shiver.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
Another short story about a town that is supposedly haunted by a headless horseman. A new schoolmaster Ichabod Crane joins the village and doesn't believe in this tale. Will this ghost appear to him to prove him wrong?

Part of Christmas is sitting by the fire, late at night, reading ghost stories. We take them in turn, one per night, and this anthology has taken us two years.

Some duds, but quite a few that still do the business. You’d expect it from Dickens and MR James but the delight was finding that such respected novelists as Elizabeth Gaskell and Edith Wharton can turn out a pretty good tale of the supernatural.

Its been a good Christmas.

James) 5/5
-El Ladrón de Cadáveres (Robert Louis Stevenson) 3/5
-La Máscara de La Muerte Roja (Edgar Allan Poe) 4/5
-La Pata de Mono (W.W. Jacobs) 4½/5
-En Mármol y a Tamaño Natural (E. Nesbit) 3½/5
-El Fantasma de Canterville (Oscar Wilde) 4½/5
-La Historia de la Vieja Enfermera (Elizabeth Gaskell) 4/5
-La Sra. Zant y el Fantasma (Wilkie Collins) 4/5
