How is Jesus also God?

Long ago, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” It's a question everyone must answer, and we need Scripture to tell us how.

The Deity of Christ is a biblical defense of Jesus’ divinity—the cornerstone of Christian doctrine. From over a dozen New Testament texts, pastor and theologian John MacArthur explores how Jesus is God, and why it matters. This study will deepen your knowledge of Christ, and thus your love for Him, fortifying your will and increasing your worship.

No man in history is more perplexing or compelling than Jesus Christ—because no other man is also God. Let this book from bestselling author John MacArthur guide you deep into the profound truths of Christ.

This book is an in-depth Bible study on the deity of Christ. The author focused on verses that are attacked by cultic groups and skeptics. He examined New Testament passages that talk about different proofs of Jesus's deity – his authority over demons, sin, disease, and so forth – and Jesus's claims to deity as well as the apostle's claims that Jesus was God. He took each passage and provided verse-by-verse commentary (including word studies). The tone was formal and somewhat academic rather than casual. The commentary was very focused on what Scripture has to say about Christ. Overall, I'd recommend this Bible study to those interested in what the Bible says about this topic.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through Amazon Vine.

The Christian faith is not theoretical or abstract; it is rooted in the practical truth that God became man in the Person of Jesus Christ

Who do you say is Jesus? A good man, a prophet, a good teacher....Jesus is so much more and that being so; it is important what you believe to be true about who Jesus is.

The text comes in three parts. The Divine Glory of Christ, The Divine Authority of Christ, and the Divine Claims of Christ.

The Divine Glory of Christ answers the question correctly about who Jesus is. In regards to creation and the first Adam, Jesus became the first born and it is his work of salvation that undid what Adam disobedience brought to mankind.

The Divine Authority of Christ discusses Christ authority over Satan, sin, the Sabbath and creation. What most was intriguing to me was the Sabbath. What Christ authority over the Sabbath means for us and how it gives us rest. The Sabbath became a "religious" hang up for many Jews. The culture was explained on how the people were distressed by anything that had to be done on the Sabbath. When Jesus declared Himself to be the Lord of the Sabbath, He struck a severe blow at the entire system of merit and works righteousness that found its focal point in the Sabbath. I think this is true today. It is easy for us to have work attitude. What do I have to do be saved. The two verbs that lead to salvation on man's part is believe who Christ is and to come to Christ in repentance.

The Claims of Christ discusses the Great I AM. Each I am discusses the divinity of Christ and the work of Christ. How Christ becomes our satisfaction in what really matters.

4.5 stars. Bigger theology read than I’m used to, a lot to absorb and go through but very good. It holds up to the premise and clearly outlines Jesus identity and deity using specific biblical examples and walking through the gospel of John and many of Jesus’ “I Am” statements and connecting to Old Testament truth reiterating His identity and unity as one with God in and through all things. I’ve never questioned that but it has given me support when it comes to better explaining and sharing with others.
Dislike: length of chapters and use of many words I didn’t know (and I know a lot) so I had to use a dictionary in addition to my Bible while reading.
Like: context in terms of original language use and translations of those words on their own and how it implicates Scriptural context/content.

Perhaps no doctrine has been challenged more in the history of Christianity than that of the deity of Christ. There are countless resources out there relating to this foundational doctrine, but this book is one of the best that I have encountered. Macarthur's methods are simple in that he examines key texts of Scripture and breaks them down before your eyes showing the absolute truth of Jesus Christ's divinity.
If you have had trouble articulating to challengers why you believe Jesus is divine, then this is a book for you. It is not overly simplistic, but is also not written for only serious theologians and scholars. This book is a great resource that I believe as pastor, Sunday school teacher, or any serious Bible student will reference regularly if they add it to their shelf.

This installment in the John MacArthur Study Series focuses on the question "Who is Christ?". This book is divided into three parts:

1. The Divine Glory of Christ - the glory of the Word and the preeminence of Christ.

2. The Divine Authorith of Christ - Christ has dominion over and is Lord of all.

3. The Divine Claims of Christ - Jesus is the Son of God, He is one with God, the Great I Am.

MacArthur uses scripture, mostly drawn from the Gospels, to support the fact that Jesus Christ was more than a mere man, much more than just a prophet or gifted teacher. If you ever struggle in your walk with Christ, or struggle defending your faith to others, this book will serve as a great reference. The appendix is also noteworthy. It features apostolic affirmations of the deity of Christ from selected scriptures, namely the witness of Thomas, Paul, the writer of Hebrews, Peter, and John. I highly recommend this book to all Christians, regardless of where you are in your walk with Christ. This would be a great resource for pastors, Sunday school teachers, or anyone wanting a deeper study of the divinity of Jesus Christ. I received this as a free ARC from Moody Publishers on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I am voluntarily reviewing a copy of The Deity of Christ through the publisher and Netgalley:

We are reminded that there is no more important question than Who is Jesus Christ? John MacArthur reminds us too that Jesus Christ was no mere man.

In the book of John we are reminded that God became man when he came to earth as the man Jesus Christ. We are also reminded that when the earth was created Jesus Christ already existed. We are reminded too that God's life is true and holy.

In the book of Colossians we are reminded that although man is made in the image of God, we are not made perfect in his image.

John MacAruthur reminds us that The Church is the body, and Jesus is it's Head.

We are reminded too that though Satan tried to come after Jesus, he had no power over him, and even the demons.

The book points out too that Christians most perfectly reflect their Heavenly Father when they are loving especially to each other.

I give The Deity of Christ five out of five stars.

Happy Reading.
