I love Deepak Chopra. However, I just wish I could really start applying this stuff. It makes so much sense, but not so easy to do. I'm just so hard on myself, but I'm learning!!! This is a book I probably just need to read over and over until it gets through to my thick skull! Ha ha
Deepak always worthwhile. Not his most stellar work but worth the read. His best, in my opinion, remains The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire. Now THAT'S a multiple read classic.
There isn't much to say here really. Often, I bear a hatred for self-help material and flaunt it too, but not when it is founded upon good philosophy, and not when the physician-author presents anything beyond a blur and with respect to underlying evidence with regards to the subjects in which his terminologies encroach upon. Most of those subjects he bears no reputable authority, not even a sliver of hope that his quotable quotes would ever be factual or ever be more than beautiful metaphors (if you ever find them beautiful, in my opinion, they are trying for eloquence).
There are some pretty interesting incoherent wordplay going on here. There are certain times when what barely passes as "philosophy" is founded on little logic or true wisdom. Much like his "Quantum Healing," probably worse since I found excerpts wherein terminologies from various separate fields are used, with neither distinct explanation for the context of their usage or their actual definitions. The reader is misled by his/her own lack of knowledge about a myriad of things, and seem to find something erudite or spiritually enlightening in Chopra's work. Often, readers of his work become gullible due to this miming of erudition and enlightenment, as well as his former reputation as a physician. All of which amount to a confusion and mere drivel that aims for the reader's confusion to aid him/her in stepping into that air of whatever passes for wisdom these days -- strings of words that mean nothing, and perhaps even everything, as long as it is all under the sun. I must say it is apt to call his work the anti-Renaissance. He aims for that appellation well, unlike most aspiring poets (he's not even there yet). Unfortunately, the perceptive reader always finds that poets lie to tell the truth, but bad poets lie for they mistake what seems to be a 'nothing' or a 'barely anything' as truth.
As Voltaire himself once said, "Beware, lest in attempting the grand, you overshoot the mark and fall into the grandiose."
Deepak Chopra has fallen into the grandiose and falls deeper still, for his "philosophy" continues in this trajectory of pseudo-intellectualism. I also now find the influential Oprah's Book Club to be a book club quite receptive to conniving deception.
A helpful and interesting take on what Deepak Chopra describes as the three levels of awareness and when and where problems arise. He describes one's awareness on three levels (1) contracted (2) expanded and (3) pure.
According to Chopra, problems arise in the first level, which is called the contracted state. This is a state of being in resistance, being tense, and defensive. This is also described as a level of awareness where one's fears take over one's actions and in many cases cripples a person's mindset and attitude.
Expanded awareness, on the other hand, is the level of awareness where one begins to cope. Problems begin to be confronted and conflicts begin to unravel a little. This is according to the book, where most people function on a daily basis. Between the first and second levels.
The final state of awareness, "pure" is the state that Chopra claims is the goal for a spiritual being. I liked how he described this state of awareness; it's when a person feels completely at home in the universe and lives in the light. In this state, there are no problems and no solutions, just being.
The challenge is to move from one level to the next and he tries to break it down for the reader with examples on what to try and what NOT to espouse in life situations. I found this last state of pure awareness so compelling and attractive. The challenge for me at times is the application to real life because human beings are emotional. One can't talk to oneself about "levels" and "awareness" if (for example) your car explodes or you get robbed of everything (e.g.) Or can you? Perhaps it's all part of the evolution. But very much worth the read- again, application seems the challenge but convincing.
I’ve never read Deepak Chopra before so I can cross him off my list. I’m sure his sage advice helps a lot of people. I’m generally not a fan of self help books (so I don’t rate them to be fair). This one was fine. I think he’s basically saying, step back, meditate and open your mind to complete awareness. With complete awareness, the answers you are seeking will come to you.
I listened to the audio book while driving. I liked the first half of the book and heard a lot of good information. "You're a soul first and a person second." The examples in the second half ran a little long and I started to lose interest.
It is very refreshing to find a book in the spiritual genre that provides real solutions to everyday, universal problems that are impacting so many of us on this human journey. Many books provide relief to the reader in the form of long-term practices that are meant to help the individual evolve their consciousness, which of course is of great benefit; however, being human means that we sometimes need immediate, easy to apply solutions as well.
In Deepak’s book, “Spiritual Solutions” we find some heartfelt advice to help us overcome many of the challenges we face in our day to day existence. I understand that many of our challenges have their roots in very individual circumstances, yet the advice given by Deepak seems to be easily applied regardless of the unique nature of the particular problem. Whether it’s relationship problems, financial problems, or questions related to consciousness and enlightenment, you will find numerous answers to these questions in, “Spiritual Solutions.”
As many notable people in history have stated, and I am paraphrasing here, the level of consciousness that created a problem needs to be exceeded in order to find a solution to the problem, and through expanding our awareness we are able to see our problems in a different light, or at least able to perceive solutions that we did not see previously. I believe that this book will assist the reader in expanding their awareness while providing immediate solutions to some of life’s great challenges. I tip my hat to Deepak for sharing his thoughts and solutions so directly in an era when so many have chosen a more indirect route.
Dr. Chopra examines various messages and letters which were sent to him by people from all over the globe. With many answers and solutions to the problems and daily conflicts which these personalities encounter, Deepak Chopra tries to adopt simple strategies in tackling with such issues. The author suggests many alternatives towards approaching problems in a comfortable manner. Spiritual Solutions is a book which is well written as it has some very valuable messages in the techniques and strategies used to handle situations which are very tumultuous and conflicting to many people. The feeling of desperation is one such moment in a person's life whereby he/she is not able to find a way out. Dr. Chopra attacks the core of problems while he is able to relay something quite meaningful in his book. Moral values, relationships, conflict of opinions, feelings of despair & uncertainty, the inability to move forward, and, the trying to be successful are key subjects which are well taken up in this book.
Maybe it was because I read this book in a time just before my oldest daughter's marriage and my youngest daughter buying a house, or during a yoga retreat, or just because Deepak's insight is so keen that this book hit on all burner=s with me. His philosophy of being grateful for what you are and have, and to try to find ways to better yourself and get along with others is something we can all live by. Looking at life as a gift and being happy as you are rather than resentful for what you are or cannot be, and to look for the good in other. This book came at a time where I saw myself falling into a sarcastic angry phase and I was looking for the worst in others. This book, along with yoga, brought me back to where I should be.
This book was a true eye-opener! It made complete sense and was recognizable, while a lot of stuff was new to me. Life changing in that I now look differently to problems and solutions. "The secret is that the level of the problem is never the level of the solution.” Chopra describes how approaching problems from a contracted awareness leads to more problems and that developing expanded awareness, and finally reaching pure awareness, is a lot more constructive and let you grow in all areas of your life. This was one of the first personal development books from a spirital perspective that I ever read.
I've read many of Deepak Chopra's books. This is one of the least satisfying. He analyzes many of life's challenges: relationships, health, success, etc... and tells u the pitfalls we often fall into. So far so good. However the solutions to the problems are contained in a paragraph or two and contain such trite sayings as "understanding yourself completely" or "live from the level of the self that is always present". Maybe this book is for more enlightened souls than myself, but, for the first time, I find Dr. Chopra's advice singularly unhelpful
Deepak does something a little different with this book, he plays the part of a spiritual 'Dear Abby...' (a newspaper column where people write in their but-what-shall-i-do questions). He does a good job, but at times, it feels very odd. Like running into a neighbor who has decided to start wearing dutch wooden shoes, unexpected but not crisis inducing.
One of his best!! Deepak is such a favorite author of mine and has helped to shape my spirituality. A book like this is a gift to society. I preordered it this year before release date!! He's always worth reading. Its a comfy read and the perfect "pre-bedtime" devotional (for lack of a better term).
I attended the NYC launch of Deepak Chopra’s new book, “Spiritual Solutions, Answers to Life’s Greatest Challenges.” In this, his 65th book, this prolific author describes the three levels of awareness and how we can expand them. He also responds to some of the many letters he’s received from people dealing with issues involving relationships, money, health, spirituality, etc.
- Not too bad, but not my favourite among Chopra's multiple spiritual books on a similar subject matter. - However, I did like the letters he provided near the end of the book, along with Chopra's responses. They were astonishingly honest, and at times, seemingly harsh, but probably necessary for those people who really need a shake-up from their lives.
Deepak explores the 3 levels of awareness and explains how all of life's "problems" can be eliminated if we allow ourselves to rise to and function at the highest level of awareness. Plain language and easy to understand.
Please, take the time to read this very wise man's words. It's deep, but, clear and simple. If this turbulent world full of egos would read, practice and live this-consciousness would make the world a fabulously peaceful place to live!
