I thought living in a real German castle meant my life would be a fairytale. But that was before I knew about the castle’s long and bloody history, before I discovered the lives of its former inhabitants still echo within its walls. And certainly before an American soldier started visiting me in my dreams, slowly drawing me into his world.

As the castle begins to reveal its secrets, one thing becomes clear: My soldier is real. And he needs me to find him.

Truly a remarkable story about unfinished business. Honestly this book gave me such a book hangover! It was short, yet it impacted me in ways I can never forget it!

In the last few months I have really slowed down in reading and writing reviews. Every now and then when I have some time I will review. And I am so glad I had time to review Somewhere in Between, a short story by Marie Everly aka June Gray.

This book was about Ali, a high school senior who moved into a castle in Germany with her mom. Once there she started to have dreams about an American soldier during World War II. As more dreams came to her, the more she realized they may not be a dream.

This story was very detailed with the location and historical events. I know the events in the book didn’t actually occur, but I appreciated the detail and care that went into it. The mixing of present day Germany and WWII Germany was fascinating and is what kept me reading. It was a short read but it never felt rushed. I think if it was longer it may have dragged and I’m glad it didn’t. I will say that the ending was different than I thought it would be. I probably say that with every June Gray book, which isn’t a bad thing. In fact, I like books that surprise me and the more books I read, the less that happens so that’s one reason I love reading June’s books. Her stories always take different turns than I’m expecting and for that I will keep reading her books. Plus, I love the way she writes her characters, and Ali and Nick are no exception. There was probably more depth that could have been written about Ali or Nick but I enjoyed what I got, plus I was more interested in the story and where it was going.

I would like to talk more about the actual plot, but I won’t so I don’t ruin the story for other readers. But I will say that it definitely made me interested in learning more about this castle and just more about the war in general. I’ve always been interested in WWII history especially since I grew up on Oahu and saw the Arizona Memorial almost every day. But I will admit that my knowledge of the war is not what it should be. And this story has definitely made me want to pick up some history books, but not the boring ones from high school.

Overall, definitely check out this story. And I can’t wait to see what else Marie Everly has in store. It did have a different tone and feel from her books under June Gray but still good nonetheless.

Somewhere in Between by Marie Everly
Alison “Ali” Cooper is settling into yet another new home. Another new country. This time, her air force mom has been sent to Germany. And they are going to stay in a castle.

Soon after they settle in, Ali starts dreaming of a man from earlier years, during World War II. As the dreams continue, she realizes the man was real. A soldier who had gone missing. With hopes of solving the mystery, she starts following her “dream clues.”

This was such a good story and definitely needs tissues handy while reading it. It is so well written and the few characters in it come alive.
