Getting along in age and finding that the younger batch of models are becoming exceedingly taller than him, Tadashi is finding it more and more difficult to land gigs. What he does land is Aki, also a male model and an up-and-coming youngster who views Tadashi with an almost hero-like worship. But Tadashi begins to grow insecure as Aki's star begins to rise. Clearly, it’s not all glitz and glamour in the tumultuous world of modeling.
Shoko Hidaka (native name: 日高ショーコ) is a Japanese mangaka unit. The drawings are by Shoko Hidaka, and the stories are by Takie (タキエ) but the author name is always "Shoko Hidaka".
Mostly, the story of two models, plus two other one-shots. I want to like this, but it just never got as cute as I felt like it should have. I guess I enjoyed reading it okay, but nothing stood out or made it special, and it's probably not something I would re-read. Despite the rather ugly cover, I probably liked the art more than anything else.
The story is really nothing special, your typical Model-cum-BL "plot", but the art is really pretty. I bought this mostly because I'm a big fan of Shoko Hidaka and want to support her as much as possible, but her later works are definitely better.
Maybe more like 3.5 stars? Most of this book was about the relationship between two models, a newcomer named Aki (who I think was 21?) and the "older model" Tadashi who I think is 24, if I was getting the math and the ages right. A bigger age gap would've made more sense, but I might be wrong about that part anyway, since I found the timelines pretty confusing in several parts, especially the opening chapter.
It really seems like this was originally written as a one-shot that got expanded into four more installments, because so much got packed into the title chapter that I had trouble tracking what was supposed to be happening when. I liked the later pieces, though, especially when we got to see Tadashi actually working, and when the story was shown from Aki's point of view.
The spin-off chapter with the photographer and young model didn't really work for me; there were a few good elements, and I was glad that the model was the one who ultimately made the moves, while the photographer had been intended to keep everything strictly at work. I was getting flashbacks from the time I went to photoshoots with my roommate, who did part-time modeling and had gotten creeped on by her fair share of photographers.
There were still a few consent issues in this book - saying "no" and "stop" in the middle of sex, which was not then stopped, plus a first time where one party was very, very drunk and didn't remember much after. It wasn't enough to super bother me, but it did skirt the line a little.
There's one other story in here that's completely disconnected from the rest, and I actually found it...really fascinating. An openly gay guy comes home from university during summer break and sees his first love on the bus - the guy he'd never actually confessed to, because...he'd died on a scuba diving trip two years earlier.
It turns out the bus guy is actually the younger brother he'd known about and never met, who has a very similar appearance but a completely different personality. When they start up a relationship, which brother is he actually thinking about, and which is he in love with...?
It brings up a lot of really interesting thoughts, and I wouldn't have minded spending more time in that world, untangling those complicatins.
Hidaka's art is of course as pretty as always. Not my favorite of Hidaka's manga but still nice to add to the collection.
This book has always been a favorite of mine since the day i bought it, and it prompted me to pick up every other manga by this author I've been able to find.
The two main characters are a really beautiful couple. I love them and really wish there were more books about them. Both men are models. The uke has long hair (a favorite trait of mine in manga characters!) and is older than the seme, who looks up to him and strives to be like him in his career. The uke isn't getting as many modeling jobs as he gets older and it's stressing him out; yet while the seme is getting more and more popular at their modeling agency, he still tells his uke he's the most beautiful one and that he still wants to work even harder so he can follow in his footsteps. It's just a really sweet relationship.
There's no jealousy or annoying third-party trying to break them up, which is a trope I really dislike, so I love that about this book. There are plenty of love scenes and they're more exciting than the standard; one takes place on a sofa at the workplace, another in a bathtub. The art is beautiful throughout but especially when the characters are at work, modeling.
There are 2 side stories that are just long enough to make for an interesting story. One is about a young model who becomes lovers with an older photographer, and the other is about a college student whose crush is killed before he ever gets to confess his feelings, but he falls in love with the crush's younger brother instead. They were all right, but the main couple were the best. There's a final mini-chapter of them at the end but I still want more!
The stories themselves are nowhere near as good as her recent works, and her art also obviously not as good as it is now, but this new edition of Hidaka Shoko's early works is still worth the while. You really can tell her tastes haven't changed much, but not in a "she hasn't grown at all" kind of way, but rather in that it makes sense that this is where she is coming from. She is one of the best BL mangaka out there, and I just love seeing old stuff from people I admire.
I really liked the first story and for them i gave 5 stars, but i must admit the other oneshots are interesting too, and i found them good, a thing that almost never happens for me. The models, Aki and Tadashi are a beautiful couple.
