Can Ace Newman, a wild man on and off the baseball field, be tamed by a sweet small town girl like Holly Summer?
This is the second sexy STANDALONE installment in Bestselling Author Alice Ward's brand new sports romance series, The Beasts of Baseball.
Ace Newman My major league career is stronger than ever, and women are flowing like cheap wine. I have life by the balls, and it feels like the party has just begun. I’m not ready for it to stop.
I’m Ace Newman. Heavy hitter. Superstar shortstop. A Beast. The wild man. So what if I party a little, drink too much, and screw a different woman every night? So what if my teammates are getting younger every season and retirement is staring me in the face?
They can’t get rid of me that easy. I’ll do whatever it takes to stay in the game. I refuse to be tamed. Especially by any one woman.
Then why do I keep thinking about Holly...
Holly Summer Falling in love with the badass of baseball, party boy, and lifelong womanizer? No, thank you. Spending the night with the man? Yes, please. I’m strong enough to separate love and sex, so why not have some fun?
This trip to New York is supposed to be the perfect escape from my father and my boring life in Indiana. Ace is fun, exciting in the moment, but there can’t be a future with the man. Yes, I feel something for him, something wildly delicious, but it’s just sex, a friendship with amazingly hot benefits to distract me while I work to build my bakery business.
NOTE: The Beasts of Baseball series follows the sexy exploits of the players on the baseball team The Beasts, and the women they love. Each book can be read as a standalone.
Prepare for a raw, emotionally charged HEA with No Cliffhanger. And remember, when two dysfunctional lives collide, it’s going to leave a mess!

Surprised I like this one as much as I did, being that H was DISGUSTING in book one. But he somehow managed to sorta kinda almost redeem himself for me here. I think.
This book really isn't a stand alone. Sure you can read it without reading the first book in the series, but I think you miss out on the full fucked-upness that is the relationship of the H/h. No one, and I mean no one, could be this h in real life unless she really just wanted a ring and access to the H's bank accounts. Because this H, he's on my special shelf. Even that fucker from Bare Hands (Gabi Moore) didn't make this shelf.
This H in a relationship is nastier than the whole pornstar-in-a-relationship thing. (And WAY less believable.) I'm also sure this H has seen/done MORE strange than most pornstars contemplate in their entire career. The h spends a year of her life in a friend's with benefits thing where he does other chicks...a lot...often the same day before and after he's been with the h and then he ends the night with the h after fucking every OW in sight, including his maid while the h is in the shower. Thankfully no real time deets on that encounter as it's a repeated bit of gossip told by another character.
Why am I harping on the OW? Because there was NO PLOT. Like none. Like once again all the plot threads just disappeared and the threads from the first book weren't picked up in this book. So...this must be a habit for the author, being unable to create plot outside of getting her couples together. In fact, looking back, she never writes the introduction or reasoning behind her characters getting together. They are already together and then fall apart spectacularly to be put back together without growth or believable reason. At least the first H had grovel.
Why did I read this? It's engaging. And I like train wrecks. I prefer them to be redeeming or purposeful or with an h that has a spine...and I thought I might get that, the blurb implied that, but...what I got...
Yeah, it wasn't that Sublime song.
It was an ooops baby plot.
***(eye-mf'ing-roll)***
The moment it happened...all possibility that this H could ever redeem himself on his own merit flies out the window. How can he prove to the h SHE was enough to make him get his shit straight? She deserves this after "believing" in him (*cough*gold-digger*cough*).
The book jumps from the h discovering she's pregnant to Ace going to rehab months later and unaware of the baby. He spends the trip TO rehab "proud (he) controlled (his) urges" and patting himself on the back for not taking the flight attendant with the "perfect ass and lips" into "the plane’s bathroom and (bending) her over the sink while plowing her from behind". I don't know about you, BUT THAT sounds like a committed man in love to me :/
There's no growth for H/h, no explanation as to why they care about each other specifically in the middle of an open bed policy, no real explanation of why he is finally ready to commit, no explanation of why she doesn't tell him about the baby...hello, he's the father. In all honesty, OW, coke habit, and rehab aside, this H is incapable of proving his worth in any way and the author takes the 'easy way out' with a surprise pregnancy.
In some ways, this book was better than book 1 because we find out the deeper issues that drive the H to such bad behavior - and it is very bad - sports star, bad boy, objectifying, manwhore behavior. Some of the same feelings, thoughts I had about book 1 apply to this one as well. I didn't think this H could be redeemed at all. I'm not sure if redeemed is the right word. The h grew up with a verbally abusive, alcoholic father - so, "understands" H. H does change (goes to rehab, deals with issues) and realizes he does love H. 2 ok stars.
No CHEATING! There was a cheating tag on one of the sensitive readers who, unfortunately for her, somehow keeps reading things that upset her, tagged it. I think he looked at a woman after he spotted the heroine across the floor at a bar, ergo cheating. Yeah, he was a manwhore, etc. but seriously there's only growing angst not cheating angst or ow drama. Sorry.
I did receive this book as a free ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is book #2 in the series, although you can read this as a stand alone book.
This is Ace's & Holly's story. We met them in book 1, they were the friends of Calvin & Whitney.
Holly moves to New York City to be with Whitney & closer to Ace. Whitney & Calvin built a really nice pool house for Holly to live in. Whitney decorated it perfectly for her.
Holly has feelings for Ace. Although she doesn't want to scare him off, she just says they are friends who have sex. She knows Ace isn't going to settle down and she tries to remind herself that she doesn't want to settle down either.
Ace is down in Florida for spring training. Ace is a player, he always has been. He has feelings for Holly, but, doesn't want to actually admit to those feelings. Ace has gotten himself a drug problem. He has been doing cocaine as a pick me up before practices and afterwards, just to get him through the day. Holly walks in on Ace and another player looking like they are about to have a threesome with a very pretty lady. However, Ace see's Holly, and leaves, taking her to his room. Holly see's Ace's stash and gives him an ultimatum, lose the drug or lose me. Ace doesn't know what to do. Holly goes back to New York with Whitney to see about opening up her bakery.
Holly doesn't know about taking money from Whitney & Calvin, she doesn't want to have a home run bakery, but, the cost of the place she was looking at was only $2 million according to the real estate agent. Holly & Whitney finish planning of Whitney's wedding and working on the cakes and goodies for the upcoming wedding.
Will Ace get his head out of his butt and realize Holly is his? Will Ace be able to get over the drug addiction? Will Holly & Ace be able to work out their differences?
Huge fan of this one. Ace is a start baseball player. Top of his game and enjoying life. A girl at every stop. Holly is the best friend of his buddy's fiancé. There is something about her he cannot resist but not enough to stop his partying ways. What happens though when he life you have might not be what you want? Is it possible to change? Holly loves Ace but is it enough? I enjoyed their story of strong love and having strength to dig inside and find what makes you happy. Great book! I enjoyed their chemistry and the heart to heart conversations they had with themselves and each other.
5 Star Kindle Unlimited Read I had judged Ace by his actions in the first installment of this series. To be honest, I didn't like him in the beginning of of this installment. OMG! I couldn't understand why Holly continued to put herself through all Ace's whoring .
Talk about redemption of a character. I struggled with the first book in this series because of Ace's ass#%£* behavior. This was a good read. Glad I continued the series and look forward to the next book.
Full disclosure: I received an advanced copy of "Ace's Wild" in return for my honest review. I would also like to disclose that I don't like sports, don't know anything about sports and never wanted to know.
I never expected to read this novel in one day, but once I opened it and read a couple of pages it became impossible to put it down. Despite of my personal profound ignorance about all sports and baseball in particular, I found myself reading game descriptions with interest. But it wasn't the game that kept my eyes glued to the book. It was the fast pace of the story, fascinating characters and interesting plot. Steamy sex scenes were just proverbial icing on this delicious cake.
There's no point in delving into every aspect, every situation and every character. Why spoil the fun of reading a new book? And, it was fun! "Ace's Wild" is an excellent read. Alice Ward's writing style is wonderful. I wish there were more writers like Alice Ward and more books like "Ace's Wild".
OMG! Alice Ward just hit it OUT OF THE BALLPARK with the second story in her Beasts of Baseball Series! Ace Newman, one of the hottest players on the Beast Baseball team likes to party, and party hard … booze, drugs, women, you name it. Ace uses these outlets to cope with his childhood demons, and the only time those demons seem to disappear is when he is with Holly. Holly is a small town girl who dreams of owning her own Bakery, and most important getting away from her home life. Holly met Ace thru her best friends Whitney, who is engaged to Ace's teammate Calvin. Holly fell hard for Ace, but won't admit her feelings. Holly sees another side of Ace that he doesn't show others, and they bond over similar childhood issues. I'll let you pick up this heartfelt love story to read how Ace and Holly got their HEA!!!

Ace is a baseball star. He knows it, lives it, and exploits it as much as possible. He gets what he wants, no matter who or what it is. Holly enjoys being with Ace, sees his inner pain he is withholding, but does not know if she can have a real relationship with someone who has so many issues. Ace is on the way to a crisis from his drug abuse, binge drinking, and sleeping around. Ace is broken, knows he has issues, but does not know how to ask for the assistance he desperately needs. Ace was not very likeable when you first meet him, but Holly sees the pain he does not show anyone else.

In Rookie Mistake book 1 of this series we meet Ace and oh boy did I NOT like him, he is a cocky, arrogant prick and he knows it, he parties hard used women and drugs. He doesn't care about anyone but Ace. Then there is Holly, she is trying to make something of herself, she has an abusive alcoholic father, she moves to New York to open a bakery, Holly and Ace have a "friends with benefits" relationship but in this story that changes, I felt Holly was exactly what Ace needed and his story redeemed him in my eyes. Wonderful book
3.5stars Ace was not a big hit with me in Rookie Mistake. I really really did not like him at all so I went into this book with a lot of bias against him but as the story unfolds, I started to understand him a little bit more. I will never see Ace as a great book boyfriend but I don't dislike him as much as I did before and that is a mark of a good story teller. With a stroke of a pen and some words, you can change a person's perception. Kudos to Alice for that. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it. The opinions and views on it are my own.
Holly has been friends of Calvin and Whitney for a long time, through them she met Ace. Hot, sexy, single, non- relationship type guy, hit it and leave it type of guy, Holly has accepted this, cause she knows she will never be able to change Ace. Ace, determined, no woman will make him change his ways, but he thinks of Holly, a lot, very fondly, wanting her, yet he doesn't know why. Neither one is willing to throw out there that they are in love with the other, will they have to give up, to survive, and move on??? Loved their story❤️❤️!
Alice Ward has written some of my favorite books!! I loved the first book in this series!! I'll be honest, I really disliked Ave. He is a cocky womanizing jerk who tries to push others to be the same. I was leary of reading his story, but since Alice wrote it, I knew I'd love it. And I DID!!! Ace redeems himself. Holly is a fun character and together they fight their demons. I had a great time on Ace's Wild Ride!!
I disliked Ace in the previous book, but he manages to redeem himself. His character has so much more depth than I previously thought. Holly makes him see his own potential. Great read with a good storyline. I voluntarily reviewed this book and was not compensated in any way.
Can a devoted woman redeem Bad boy Ace before he self destructs?!😱 August 2, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition 👍4 and a bit stars🔥⚾ 💕 This story was a pleasant surprise. I could not imagine ever sympathizing with or liking Ace, the hero, after his outrageous, wild, and misogynistic behavior in Rookie's Mistake, the previous book in the series. But Alice Ward gave this character a heartbreaking backstory and lots of insight into Ace's insecurities. Though I still found him hard to love, he was slowly revealed as a character with major insecurities and hidden virtues. Telling half of the story from his point of view was very effective. Author Alice Ward is really adept at making her heroes jerks with a hidden heart of gold and it's clearly that hidden soft center that heroine Holly can't resist.:-)
With its rollercoaster of raw emotion, red hot passion, and a hero spiraling down into darkness, I was totally riveted to the story and powered through in one sitting. I am looking forward to catching up with the lovelives of other members of the team as the series continues.
I read a complimentary copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Ace is crazy as ever; partying, drinking, women and baseball. He's still a star with the NY Beasts but time is not on his side. Ace has been hitting it all a little too hard. His life is starting to spiral out of control. The only stability in his life is when Holly comes to NY to visit. Being one of the oldest guys on the teams is like trying to outrun a ghost. He's doing his best to keep up with the young guys, but age is taking it's toll. Ace, willing to do whatever it takes, sets himself on a path to destruction.
Holly is a good girl with a tough past. She has a soft spot for Ace and sees beyond his jerky facade. She's only ever claimed to want is a no strings arrangement with Ace. But what they have seems to be teetering on the edge of more. At least for her.
Watching these two start out as bedfellows and develop into more was beautiful. Their chemistry has always been molten hot. Seeing the softer side of Ace and being witness as he conquers his demons made him more human and likeable. I always enjoy a series that interconnects so that I can catch up with past characters. I look forward to more of the NY Beasts.
4 stars I purchased a copy of The Beasts of Baseball series book 2: Ace’s Wild by Alice Ward and this review was given freely. A new year and a new season starts this reformation of a bad boy full length steamy novel with a happy ending. Cake baker Holly finally leaves her abusive father's home and moves to New York to be closer to Whitney and to The Beast's shortstop Ace. This novel focuses on the rocky and steamy friends with benefits romance of Holly and Ace but also shows the caring side of Ace that he hides under a crass, sexually voracious, alcohol and drug using, womanizing playboy persona. Raw language and vivid descriptions fill the pages as we read the story of self centered Ace having to accept the world no longer revolves around him and that there is someone and something out there besides baseball.
tell me why this book kinda good? like genuinely wtf was book 1 and why were calvin and ace so disgusting and awful in it
ace was actually likable here and worked to deserve holly unlike calvin with whitney in book 1. im so confused by that…
ALSO ace never apologized for all the shit from book 1 so still hate the man
———
before reading: i was curious to see how this book would play out bc this douchewad ace was literally the catalyst to why calvin from book 1 stepped out on whitney. and then the fmc holly acted like a dumb b still seeing this man when he did her best friend’s (whitney) & boyfriend like that ???? this is a whole mess
ace treats women like c%m rags. no respect for them at all
how can this man be redeemable and literally no apology to the book 1 couple either. throw the whole man away please
This is the second book in The Beasts of Baseball series. I really have no clue on anything baseball related...on any sport really lol yet i still loved this book! I had a soft spot for Ace after reading Rookie Mistake, so i couldn't wait for his story. He is your typical bad boy...massive ego, bad attitude and has a hunger for booze, drugs and women. But there is a side to Ace that he keeps well hidden, only Holly can see that there is more to him than everyone thinks. The question is though can Holly wait for Ace to realise what's in front of him before it's too late?? Another fantastic book from Alice. A great read, that won't lose you if you are not a sports fan.
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
After reading the first book in the series, Rookie Mistake, I REALLY disliked Ace. I decided to read this one because I enjoyed the first book and wanted to see how in the world the author could possibly make Ace into a likeable hero. Being honest, his horrible ways did not end for awhile, but you begin to see other facets of his personality, pressures, stresses and insecurities he's battling and a perspective about why he's so messed up. Let me just say that Holly was definitely right when she kept telling her best friend that there was more to Ace than what was visible on the surface. I enjoyed the story even better than the first one, and am glad this couple achieved their HEA. Definitely worth reading!
A lot of my feelings are the same for this book as for the first one in this series. There are several different kinds of triggering situations in this book. Again, I thought most of the Ace and Holly’s reactions were very realistically presented. I’m not completely on board with the way their friends-with-benefits relationship is portrayed, but I think it’s amazing the lies we tell ourselves to justify our own bad behavior and that of the people we love. I really appreciated the way the authors shows us how this pair breaks through: that it doesn’t always work the first time and that there’s no shame in asking for and accepting help. I do think the secret baby angle, was just a little bit more than was necessary, though.
