She’s his brother’s widow, he’s the king, she wants a child, will he give her more? Princess Cecile had been raised to be all that is virtuous, but when her husband dies leaving her childless, to avoid being used as her father’s pawn, she has to produce a child and pretend that it is her dead husband’s. King Julian has avoided his brother’s wife for four years. Though he’s taken many a willing woman to his bed, he drew the line at betraying his own blood. But now his brother is dead and there’s nothing standing in his way. Just as he’s plotting the fair lady’s abduction and seduction, she falls into his bed, literally. And the favor she asks of him will have her at his mercy and in his bed.
I tried to be objective and read this book dispassionately, but I failed. This is one book that I would just strongly say you should avoid. While the acts performed by the king may be accurate, it's no less disturbing. I skimmed a little at one point. Seriously, I was tired of hearing him having sex and it got boring, please so what? You get a hard on for anything and everything. How is this romantic? She is nothing special. I felt honestly that he could get a hard on for a tree hole if he felt so inclined! It's just WHERE IS THE LOVE in LOVE MAKING? How is this romantic?
Also, what the hello was with the words used here. While some might just be accurate I thought he was the King? Did anyone buy this!? Dear God! WHY? Why do this to yourself? There is no other words for this one but BAD!
Now, after all this I am finally able to rate this book. After having read it and found the content so disappointing and disturbing. For God sake he only wants to have sex with everyone and everything. End of story, move on. Bullshit, he loves her. She is just the "pure" one. When she does die in childbirth, he will just go back to f*cking random whores and having random bastard. That's my take on it. Agree or disagree! I tried it and no one can say I didn't. Now, I need some serious brain bleaching!! Honestly, WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING READING THIS ONE!
________________________________________________________Below are my original thoughts on this book. I should have stuck by it. LESSON LEARN!
NOTE FOR ME THE WHOLE ISSUE OF HAVING KIDS WITH OTHER.
When a man is an alpha he protects his offsprings no matter who they may come from. I don't enjoy reading the hero having sex with others but the true deal breaker for me is his disappointing attitude towards his kids. How could he even be trusted!! I know this is historically accurate but I don't want my romance book filled with a hero like that! NOT FOR ME!
DNF @ 21% I skimmed through and the hero has If the author's going to write a historical book and is going to say co*k and ti**ies why not call the ladies bits too a cu*t instead the hero is calling it "cunnies".
And when I write a review for this author's books I get trolls after my a** I've decided to write a quote from the book so I don't get acussed of not being "HONEST"
READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Oh but there was more.. But I wanted to spared you.
Edited: I forgot to mention that the heroine is a virgin. She had a sexless marriage.
So I broke my ban on JS books to read this one after reading Willow Brooks' review, and I'm glad I did. As she put it, this had much more plot and world building than any other book by Silver I've ever read. It still had the signature possessive sex scenes, but the character development was actually there, and while there were still a couple of mistakes, it was nothing like the grammar mess I'm used to seeing. I enjoyed it if for no other reason than for the fact that it said, "the ladies were all atwitter," and the word "atwitter" always makes me giggle.
Hero is a bit of a pansy when it comes to his relationship with the heroine...not what I expect from a Jordan Silver hero. The hero did finally get his alpha on towards the heroine but late in the story
This started out a little slow, and then it jumps right into the H having sex with other women. All this happens before we even get to meet the h. So at this point I was starting to regret buying this book. But I love Jordan Silver so I kept reading. I did enjoy the romance between Julian and Cecile. He really did care for her, however this could have been ALOT better. The word choice throughout the book made me cringe. Your not really missing anything if you skip this book.
I had a friend to message me on FB and ask me to review Indiscretion by Jordan Silver. Apparently, she has become a fan of what she calls my “take-no-shit” reviews.
Here's the thing. Goodreads is a place for readers to get to know and share their honest views of the works of writers. It is supposedly a “safe” place to discuss books. As such, I try to stay as true as possible to the 5-star rating system, especially lately. If I rate a book with 1 star, then for me, that literally indicates just what the rating means – “I did not like it.” After all, when a reader goes to write a review, right above the text box, the question is posed: “What did YOU think?” That is an invitation to share an opinion about an author's work, not the author, and is a personal opinion that is mine and mine alone. I do not ever post with expectations that others will like or agree with my reviews.
So, having said that, on with this review, which is riddled with SPOILERS, by the way…
This is a historical romance or erotica, whichever Ms. Silver wants to call it. There was lots of sex in it, so I guess that it can be shelved as erotica. There are tons upon tons of safety issues with this one. Frankly, I should have DNF'd it after Chapter 4, but I continued so that my FB friend could read this entire review.
Lead Male MC: Julian Aguilon (king of an unnamed land during an undefined era in history)
Lead Female MC: Cecile Aguilon (Julian's sister-in-law, who was married to his younger brother Frederick)
Chapter 4 – The Marbury twins, Avril and Adele, engage in an extremely descriptive threesome sex scene with Julian.
* Julian's thoughts: I had fun fucking the twins for the next week or so, until their father got wind of what we were about and packed them off home. Oh well there was always new cunny to be had when you were the king.
* It is also at the end of this chapter that we learn that Julian has many bastard children. His thoughts: It was a wonder I haven't spawned more bastards than I have to date. I celebrate each new birth as it was reported to me, and their mothers had no fear of their futures. They knew their king would see to them. I declare they make out better for having graced my bed than some who's made advantageous matches.
Chapter 5 – Julian's brother Frederick is killed, and he leaves a widow, Cecile, behind. The two had been married for 4 years. Julian says that although he admired the great beauty of his sister-in-law, he never would have betrayed his brother (although he has bedded wives before).
Chapter 6 – Lord Primrose's daughter, Georgina, engages in an extremely descriptive sex scene with Julian.
* It should be noted here that while Julian is having sex with Georgina, he is wishing that it is Cecile, his sister-in-law. It is also in this chapter, right after Julian finishes having sex with Georgina, that his post-coitus thoughts take this turn: My bastards all have sires. That was one of the things I arranged for any woman who bore me a child. To date I have five daughters and two sons, at least those were the ones I have been made aware of, and none of them would ever know me as their father. They were well cared for of course, but they will never be in the succession for the throne. It was not the way of my people.
Chapter 7 – Julian's friend Nicholas returns to court, but on his way back in, he stopped at Marbury castle. This conversation ensues → Nicholas: “By the way I had the opportunity to stop in at Marbury castle on my way back. The old earl is very put out with you as he now has two daughters of marriageable age who cannot show their faces this season because of their very obvious proof of a dalliance with their king.” (Translation: Julian had gotten both twins pregnant during his “week or so” sexual affair with them.) Julian: “How did they seem, were they well?” Nicholas: “Both in good spirits, if a little in need of some of what got them into trouble in the first place.” (Translation: Nicholas is also a manwhore, which is confirmed when Julian jovially reminisces about how he and Nicholas have shared women in the past. As such, during his pass-through on the way back to court, Nicholas had no issues with shagging the Marbury twins, who were both pregnant with Julian's bastard children.) Julian's thoughts: ...in fact, sometimes we fucked the same woman during the same period of time as part of a little game; unbeknownst to the lady of course.
Chapter 8 – Julian's thoughts: Nicholas returned late into the night with quite the proposition, but not looking forward to a repeat of my last dalliance I had to decline. Nicholas continues to try to tempt Julian by saying: “Are you sure? I hear these two know all the ways to make a man's rod happy.” Nicholas is here basically trying to set up an orgy: Julian, Nicholas, and two unnamed females.
* It should be noted here that in just the previous chapter, Nicholas was also the friend who reported to Julian that there was already, not ONE, but TWO, young ladies, the Marbury twins, who were both carrying Julian's children, who Nicholas saw fit to “service” on his way back to court.
Chapter 11 – Juian's little sister, Lillian, approaches him and informs him that she wants to marry “[his] trusted friend, lord Nicholas.”
* It would do the reviewer well to refer back up above to my notes about Nicholas from Chapters 7 and 8. Even Julian himself was taken aback regarding Lillian's request, as he confronted his friend with this accusation: “Nicholas not more than a fortnight (two weeks) ago you were inviting me to bed two women with you.”
* And interestingly, after Nicholas takes his leave of this conversation, Julian has these thoughts: Our sire had wed our mother for love and I will give [Lillian] the same, but not Nicholas. I knew too much about him, we'd shared too much. And no matter what he says there's no way he could change, and if he hurt her I'd be forced to kill him.
Um, pot? Kettle? O_o
I'm not sure that it was ever specified exactly what time period this book took place in. However, I am inclined to believe that back then, royalty did in fact behave this way when it came to matters of sexuality, morality, and fidelity. Nevertheless, when I pick up a book, I want to immerse myself in fiction. I want to get lost in the romance. I want to root for the couple. I want to believe in the couple.
I felt none of those things whilst reading about Julian and Cecile. Julian was very nonchalant in his sexual escapades, disgustingly so. There was never any mention of him even trying to practice safe sex or any type of birth control. I do believe that even back then, that French letters (animal membranes, such as intestines, used as condoms) were probably available, and especially accessible to royalty and those with lots of money.
But again, this was another case where I wanted to ask the author, “Would you fall for this guy?”
So this book receives 1-I-did-not-like-it star from me.
NOTE: All excerpts in quotes or italics were taken directly from the book, and no copyright infringement was intended.
I actually liked this book to be honest, I think this book had more plot and world building than any book I've ever read by Silver.
For people having issues with other women and because a lot of the reviews aren't telling the whole truth so I will. All the so called other women takes place before the king ever got with the heroine. Honestly, what do you expect? Back then it was commonplace for kings to sleep with many women under the same roof as the queen, and they had mistresses. Good lordie. Many Kings, Dukes, and Earls had bastard children (That's what they called them, I don't like it) so why this is a shocking big deal, beats me. Also the King has sex with sisters but this all happened before the king and the heroine.
What I didn't like about this book that actually kept drawing me out of the story was the modern language bits. Quim and cunnie was used for the female parts, which was true for historicle. Titties, F-bombs, etc just sound and felt off. She did use, rod for the man. Don't get me wrong because I love JS but if it wasn't for the small details, I would have thought this was written perfectly. She had so much knowledge of that life but the use of certain words ruined it, in a way. Still I liked the story. Completely different than what this author normally writes.
I got a glimpse of this book last year when the author put the some chapters at her website or somewhere, that's why I picked this book.
Some readers must find H horrible: he had several kids lived somewhere with their mothers and he did take good care of them but didn't let these kids know he was their father. However, he was a king, so I accepted his behavior.
However, I didn't find H as possessive as JS' s most Hs. He did stay faithful to her after they slept together, but he didn't realize his feeling for her immediately, nor want to marry her.
I wouldn't say JS' s historical was a disaster, after all, the writing was still her style.
I was not pleased with the king at the beginning of the story. He was a manwhore and had no problem leaving little kinglets all across the land. However I do love a reformed man that finds true love and the torture he goes through before finally figuring out what is most important despite what others might think. There is, of course, those one or two scandalous people that think to cause dissension to further their own agendas. Good thing this is a romance and good always triumphs over evil and we always get a happily ever after
Loved this one. Jordan did great once again with a story set in the past. The hero was great lived how he was tough yet you could see his sensitive side. The heroine was shy but as always with one of Jordan's ladies went after what she wanted.
This one is soo good!!!So well written and stayed in context throughout the book!Managed to have scorching heat within the period of time the book is written in! This is vintage Jordan Silver
I am a fan of Jordan Silver but I was disappointed with this book. For those readers who enjoy reading some raunchy sex, you'll love it. For those with any interest in or knowledge of history, - not so much. I was puzzled as to where and when the story was set but the promoters in her fan club claim that it was set in England in the 1500's (16th Century). If you're writing about a fictitional monach, 16th century England is perhaps not the wisest choice since it is so well documented. This is the century of the Tudors, the Reformation, The Book of Common Prayer, Shakespeare, Marlow, Spenser etc. To create a fictitious king and royal family seems an odd thing to do. She could have got away with it (and still could) if the British place names were removed and a very short prologue added which explained that the story is set in a fictitional 16th century country somewhere in Europe. My other problem with it is that much of the dialogue is written in a very unrealistic cod 'Olde English' style with the odd phrase in modern American vernacular thrown in. This reduced me to giggles at times but there are so many howlers in the book that I was reduced to hysteria quite often.
Another Jordan Silver hot read! I was hesitant at first with the fact that he admitted to having quite a few kids and the way he was but once they became intimate, he became loyal to her. Was not expecting the little surprise from her previous marriage! Definitely another hit!
I loved Julian's don't give a f*ck attitude! He is the typical alpha male that we've come to expect in Ms. Silver's writing but in a refreshing new setting.
Cecile is a refreshing cross of innocence and seductress. She won't be Julian's mistress and makes no qualms about telling him so.
Not a fan of reading detailed sex between the H and other women. He sort of took manwhore to a whole new level. Regardless, this will still give you a bit of the Jordan Silver fix you may be looking for.
Yeah, right, he loves the heroine. Bullshit. The way that he fucks the heroine is the same way that he screws the OWs, he can't get enough of the OWs too, the same way he do oral sex with them like is the best wine in his words and that he want spent inside of their vaginas. In what way it shows that the h is special? The description of this engaging sex actions and thoughts towards the OWs make what he did with the heroine lacking. Like another reader pointed out, usually they aren't description with the OW in sex, but if it is the way all their Hs do with the OWs, what they did with the hs are lacking. In this book you can see through his actions and thoughts how he enjoyed doing and giving to the OWs like they are the suppreme haven, how he loved doing oral to them while her Hs most of the time take then give to the heroine, you can see that they enjoyed more to put his junkie in the hs mouth them doing the same with them, and here he enjoyed much more eating them than with the heroine. How the OWs pussy is like a wine and how tight they are. After that everything he did to the heroines seems shallow and meaningless. If this is the way her Hs feel towards the Ows and the heroines that they supposed love in her books, them it's not worth it. Most of the time his Hs just took from the heroines. Like another reader said, once she died he will continue fucking around, he would fuck every skirt and considered the best lay in modern worlds. Her Hs maybe possessive and jealous and maybe in love with the hs, but it never stopped them to fooling around until they get the hs or if they thought that the hs did they wrong. Another thing, it's not great thing that he got the heroine pregnant if he had multiple children with multiple OWs and he is very proud of that. And I think the people of his kingdom should make a rebellion and ask for his head, because the money from the taxes that they pay is going to give a luxury life for his OWs and bastards while the people didn't have enough food to eat.
While I liked this story it was too far fetched. A king too old and unmarried for too many years. In those days he would be considered middle aged. Even if he had managed to stay unmarried the pressures of his position would have had him put any of his illegitimate children in a position to be heir long before he finally got his brothers widowed wife for himself.
Also, the story starts two years before the MMC even meets the FMC and that meeting was off or on page. It was only a passing thought at best. So what was the point? To explain how he was a solitary ruler? It was irrelevant information and a waste of page time.
Lastly, the relationship was on page as nothing more than s e x. The author claimed they got to know each other between bouts but as the reader I want to see that on page. As it stands it was a terribly one sided relationship with the MMC having so much power over the FMC. While I get that I still didn’t feel the love of the MMC for the FMC though. It never came through as strong enough to warrant him marrying the FMC for. To my reading interpretation she would have been a mistress and no more.
On a side note I kept picturing the show the tudors through this whole story. I don’t know if that was this author’s inspiration or just how my mind related the stories but it was distracting.
*sigh* In my defence I tried. I really fucking tried but from the explicit scenes with other women to him having numerous bastards to never using a condom, to the girl being a virgin , to him killing a WHOLE family for the sins of 1 person this book was fucking unbearable.
I get that it's a historical romance and things like this used to happen but let's be honest all the girls he hooked up with was from noble birth...sort-of and women weren't allowed to dilly-dally like that. Not to mention no one would dare to call their king a skirt chaser .
P.S- Just so you know condoms used to exist in the 19th century.
This book is a disgrace and I'm pretty sure that nature wants its trees back.
I don't know what it is about this one. I liked the plot, I enjoyed the interaction between Julian and Cecile but it just didn't grab me and pull me in. There is nothing wrong with this book it's truly just an opinion. I enjoyed the story as it was an easy read and I would probably reread it at some point. I'd definitely recommend it to others. I know all this sounds crazy since I only gave it 3 stars but I just can't get past something about it that would encourage me to rate it higher.
I loved this story. It had an excellent plot. It kept my attention throughout the whole of the book. Jonathan was exactly what a you g king of old should be. It had some funny moments and the sex was of the chain. Excellent book.
This was an intriguing read. It is different from the type of stories that I am used to reading by Ms. Silver, but it does not disappoint. It is steamy with a descriptive setting and a plot that drew me in along with characters that blew me away.
Great Jordan of doing this historical book. Very good. I enjoyed it.🦋 i’m historical buff of love stories. Love this one. Haven’t read a good one in a while.🦋
