Utsumi’s art show entry prompts some rather strong reactions across the board, but Shou’s especially goes to two extremes. Elsewhere everybody is pairing off, except Yuki (of course), presaging the pending end of the series after all this time...
Phew. Once again it becomes blatantly apparent that Utsumi sucks and, as the lead character, this is a problem. I wish Shou had blown up even harder at the outset of this book because, even if he didn’t pick the photo, he’s still dating Shou while nursing his wounds over Yuki.
To add insult to injury, Shou has a very awkward encounter with her ex, whom she doesn’t want to be near, and Utsumi accuses her of still having a hang-up with HIM. Way to not notice the boulder in your own eye there, skip.
(I still think that somebody’s gonna die before this series is over - prove me wrong, author!)
Everybody else saves this book. Eri and Kono have their baseball un-date, which goes poorly until Kono decides to get himself together and go for it. He still needs a little encouragement, but these two are a pretty cute match and this story has juuuuuust enough melodrama and a nice payoff (also, as trite as the railway scene is, I did rather like it).
Izumin, meanwhile, has long been the more collected and playboyish of the guys in this story and we learn why this volume as he starts spending more time with Oomura.
This is an interesting match up, since Oomura is still way hung up on Utsumi and pretty hopeless about it. Izumin, however, hasn’t taken any relationship seriously since his murky past encounter. I still think that initially he was kind of trash to her, but it’s pretty clear where this is headed and they certainly have more chemistry here.
Fan service is mercifully kept to minimum levels, beyond that cover, letting the story be the star of the story. A rare novelty for these books. Hell, there’s actual sex and it’s tastefully presented, which boggles the mind.
However, I seriously wish they’d give Yuki something to do other than mope. Thinking back on her character from volume 1 and her friendship with Utsumi, it’s like night and day. They haven’t resolved anything with her, like, at all.
And it annoys me that everything that brings Yuki and Utsumi closer together is pure coincidence. During a group outing with penalties you can see what’s going to happen the second it shows up (Chekov’s penalty) and, after the grating tennis club section, there’s an annoying frail-female-scared-by-a-bee-oh-no-we-have-fallen-into-a-lovers’-position bit of trope nonsense.
You can try writing that off as hoary destiny crap, but robbing your leads of any agency and having them fall into each other is so underbaked. Drawing this out just feels like the story once again crapping on Shou.
3 stars. Hey, any volume where Good Ending doesn’t actively embarrass itself is a cut above the norm for this series lately. I’m still pre-annoyed at however they detach Shou from Utsumi so he and Yuki can get together, but for now this was an okay volume.
Ugh! So much drama! I feel like some of these circumstances could have been left out. This really is dragging on. Will you two just admit you are perfect for each other and forget everything else that has happened in your past? Please!
