Well, I thought this was the penultimate volume of Good Ending and I had a riotous marathon analogy prepared. Instead what I get to reference is the point in a race where you hit the wall and realize you still have miles to go before the end...
A step up from last time, though it couldn’t have gotten much worse. The art has some really good comedic moments and reactions, which is something this series overall does quite well. I should give it credit for that since I tend to dump on the storytelling more than anything else.
Now to dump on the storytelling. Okay, okay, the Eri subplot in this is actually kind of good. It’s the classic case of a meddling friend thinking they know the way things should play out and taking it worse than anybody that two people who they think should be together are not. The resolution is cute and straightforward, which is a rare step for Good Ending in general.
What I find myself caught between in this series is whether the choices of the characters are driving me crazy or the choices of the author. It can be hard to tell - certainly any time sex rears its head it could be going either way.
Utsumi makes a classic blunder when talking to Shou about the Valentine’s Day chocolate he may or may not have received, but that’s partially because he’s dumb enough to listen to bad advice. I’ll allow for that one.
Less so the ski trip, where he really should know better about 92% of the time (as an aside, Eri’s actions and reactions playing Uno are probably the best part of this book). That’s partially on him and partially the ludicrous narrative contrivance that erupts during his punishment, which is crazy even for this book.
Then there’s the whole photo assignment that closes out this instalment, which aside from featuring a welcome cameo from Yuasa, has an ending SO obvious that it robs the story of any juice.
It’s annoying because the end result of everything is that Utsumi has girls draped all over him and the ones getting hurt through his asinine behaviour are the women he dates - he’s fine. The way he keeps hurting Shou through his thoughtlessness is grating and makes him a lot more unlikable than I think is intended.
Given the way this keeps going and the wild nonsense before it, I am not confident that the author isn’t going to kill one of the love interests just to let our “hero” off the hook in the guilt department. That’s my current prediction - we’ll see how it plays out.
2.5 stars, and I will give it three this time because nobody gets molested and some of the comedy is good (what a yardstick). This is 100% my train wreck punishment reading and I will see it to the end out of sheer stubbornness at this point.
In general, the series is pretty cute. There are major up and down swings in my mood while reading this. Sometimes everything is happy and adorable, but other times I get frustrated with the characters because they don't seem to be thinking through anything at all.
