After sixteen volumes, the saga of Good Ending comes to a close. Don’t worry though - we’ve still got time for a couple of kidnappings and for everything to get wrapped up cleaner than a Christmas present dipped in bleach.
You might consider this a spoiler-y review if you have never read any book like this before, be advised. I’m skipping the turgid peeping scene that opens this volume as well.
Yuki goes missing and because her ex is around, Utsumi makes the obvious leap that she’s been kidnapped. Faster than you can say ‘9021Oh-no!’ it turns out he’s right and one of the weirdest excuses I’ve seen to get all the cast together ensues.
This section is wholly ludicrous, even for this series, featuring an improvised grappling hook and yet another bloody battering ram (second book this month where a battering ram detracted from a story - one more and I am creating a law about it).
One crisis over, a SECOND kidnapping immediately occurs (technically) because of the fallout from the first. At least this one is more in keeping with series tradition and has a sweet, if utterly implausible, ending (probably the nicest moment in the entire book, even). Adding these characters at the last minute was a bit lame though.
While all this was going on, I had one of my classic last-minute revelations where I realized the problem that Good Ending has had for many volumes. Much as I don’t think Utsumi is that great, Yuki got dealt such a raw hand by this series.
When Shou was Utsumi’s goal it made sense that she was shy and awkward because that was her character. As Yuki slowly turned into the goal, the book took a cool, collected character and made her this meek wreck.
Yes, you could rightly argue that this was all a mask, but it doesn’t change the fact that she is a lot stronger at the start of this series than she is at the end and I suspect that’s partly so she has to rely on Utsumi and it kind of sucks.
Finally we get the standard future ending and see what happened and that everybody you thought would pair up did, in fact, pair up. Mostly okay, except Yuki’s ex faces no comeuppance for his actions and the series takes one last jab at me by having Shou THANK Utsumi for breaking up with her. I was fuming at that one.
(Also Utsumi’s photo that everybody seems to go crazy about is super pedestrian.)
Oh, take your three stars and leave me alone, Good Ending. There’s at least one good moment in here and the bonus comics are fun. I sincerely doubt I will ever read this again and some of these volumes were pretty dire, but at least it didn’t kill anybody at the end. Sometimes you take the small victories.
Overall, the relationships are really cute. I especially love the last 5 chapters of this story. The drama and events that lead up to these two finally getting together for real. The story does sometimes drag out a little which is why I had to stop reading it for a short while. I was just getting a little tired of the characters, but this series does end a good note with me. There is just a lot of other stuff that you have to get through in order to get there.
Words cannot explain how much I cherish this series. I was initially looking for a light romance Manga to pick up my mood and chose this by accident. I don't regret it one bit. It may have broken my heart reading this series but I enjoyed it more than any Manga to date.
