Ice and Snow Christmas #1

Walking on Thin Ice

Rate this book
It’s not easy for Spenser Roland to admit it, but he needs help. Christmas is just a few days away, and he can’t face the idea of showing up to his family’s gathering alone … again. They want to see him happily settled, but Spenser doesn’t date. He can’t risk it if he wants to protect his family. But one unexpected night with Evan Scott has him thinking that maybe he can strike a deal that will make his family happy and give him a little holiday cheer as well.

Evan never should have accepted a ride home from the sexy-as-hell corporate executive, but he’s proud that he stuck to his guns. He’s done with the one-night stand game. He wants something real. Something that lasts. But when Spenser returns, asking him to pose as his boyfriend over the weekend at a Christmas celebration, Evan is sure he’s lost his mind.

But he can’t say no.

Maybe it’s the shadow of loneliness in Spenser’s bright blue eyes that’s too much like his own. Or maybe it’s his heart-stopping smile.

Either way, Evan knows he’s on thin ice with Spenser, risking his own rules and heart, but Spenser is worth the risk.

Okay, brace yourselves. Here comes the gushing.

I absolutely LOVED this story
, which was pretty damn near perfect, in my opinion. I was in the mood for something happy and light, which was precisely what the book delivered.

Seeing Spencer and Evan spending time together was electric on page, despite Spencer's claim that he doesn't date and Evan's claim that he doesn't do one night stands.

From the diner scene on the first night that they met, you could just tell that, given a chance, these two guys would be nothing short of incredible together.

And that chance came in the form of Spencer's invitation to Evan to spend a long Christmas weekend with his family.

And Spencer's family? God, how I loved every single one of them. These are how supporting characters are meant to be written, with very distinct, strong, and humorous personalities.

I was also amazed how, in spite of being insanely wealthy, Spencer's family, with their large, yet comfortable mansion, never came across as privileged and showy.

There were feelings and sparks galore and, although there was an almost insta-love happening, the romance didn't come across as rushed or unbelievable.

Then when it came to sex, Jesus, these two definitely knew how to git 'er done. Those scenes were hot and steamy, as well as very touching. Never did I roll my eyes and think 'porny,' which can be a very difficult thing to achieve in stories like this.

Most of the conflict in the story, by which I mean *all*, stemmed from Spencer's homophobic grandfather, who also happened to be CEO of the company where most of Spencer's family work. He was the reason that Spencer was still in the closet.

But, thankfully, the dramatic parts and ensuing separation were short-lived, then the reader was back to the same feel good read, with a solid HEA shaping up.

I'll wrap up my oozing adoration for the story by saying that I honestly can't think of a single thing that I'd change in this book, so if you're looking for a happy, thoughtful holiday read, this one would be a fine candidate -- especially when it's *FREE* with Kindle Unlimited!.

So I'm giving this one 4.5 marshmallowy stars, just not in Evan's cereal. ;- )

I normally don't start reading Christmas books until at least after Thanksgiving. But this is Jocelynn Drake, author of the Unbreakable Bonds series and one of my favorite books of 2016, Shatter.

So, an exception was made and I dove in for some Christmas cheer.

Spencer is your stereotypical gay millionaire with no time for dating or romance. He picks up men in bars for one-night-stand sex. And nothing else.

Evan is a man with a broken heart, for more reasons than one, who is SO OVER the one night stand business that he refuses Spencer's charming and sexy advances. Spencer is surprised that someone would turn him down (he's handsome, sexy, charming, rich, etc.) so Evan becomes a project for him.

Skip ahead a few days and Spencer has Evan agreeing to spend the weekend with Spencer's family, posing as his boyfriend.

So, you've probably heard this plot before. I have and thought I would be a bit bored with a fake-boyfriend Christmas story where the family members are utterly delightful and everyone has a lovely time. But, again, this is Jocelynn Drake, Queen of dirty talk and passion. And she brings it with the dirty talk. And the passion.

I’ve found it enjoyable to slide my fingers through soft, long hair. To tighten my fingers in it as you’re down on your knees before me, your mouth sliding back and forth over my cock. Or maybe you’re pinned against the wall, my hand in your hair, pulling your head to the side as I lick and suck my way up your neck while I stroke your dick until you come apart beneath me.

Oh yeah!

Leave your angst behind, don't expect a deep plot or car chases or werewolves and enjoy the sexy early holiday gift from Ms. Drake.

PS: Since this is my first review since the 2016 election, I have to get this off my chest. Fuck Trump.

Very sexy read with a satisfying ending!

I loved Evan, and Spenser was quite a softie beneath the cold, jaded exterior. Spencer's family, minus the bigoted grandpa, was wonderful.

There was some drama with Spenser being unable (unwilling?) to stand up for Evan and their relationship, but the angst didn't overwhelm the story.

This was my first book by this author, but I don't think it will be the last.

Fuck, this is soooo good, all the feels. It made me smile and swoon and cry and giggle and then cry a lot and then finally I was so happy happy happy.
The beginning is a little bit strange and it took me a few pages to understand Spenser and Evan, but then ... Whoa ...
This is one of the few books that I read straight through in one go and then bought the next book before this one was even finished.
I can't even describe what it was that grabbed me here. The plot is good, but not exceptionally exciting. The characters are all interesting, including the side characters. But nothing really stands out. The sex scenes are also good, but not really overwhelming. It must have been the overall atmosphere that the book created for me.
And of course the writing style simply sucked me in and then never let go.

He leaned in and slowly kissed Evan, memorizing the softness and the contours of his mouth. He’d never bothered to kiss a partner after sex. Never wanted to. Never needed it. 🥰🫠🥰

“The photo shoot this morning was nice,” Evan quietly said. Spenser smiled and his heart started beating again. “That’s true.”
“And I think I recall you offering to go ass up for me—”
If Evan said anything else, Spenser never heard it over the loud laugh that jumped from him at Evan’s unexpected words. He would never get enough of Evan. The man kept him on his toes, surprising him at every turn.

Lovely Christmas novel full of heart.

Short and sweet, interesting characters. loved Spencer, he was complex, hard on the outside, lonely, and so deserving of love! Evan was sweet, but a bit on the perfect side.
Their banter in the first half of the book was awesome. I loved how they got closer, pulled together like magnets.
Enjoyed it a lot.

Ohh this was perfect for my mood.
Short but I never had the feeling that the author was rushing things along.
The characters weren't one dimensional, either, but interesting.
Directly getting the rest of the series! It's not often an author convinces me with their novella to explore their work further.

I am not a very big fan of Christmas stories. I like Christmas just fine, it's just that Christmas books, usually just don't do it for me.

My dear friend Susan however, told me that this one wasn't really Christmassy. Since I am such a good friends and because this book was written by Jocelynn Drake, (one of my favorite authors this year) I decided to give this one a try !!

I'm very pleased that I did. This was a very nice, short, uncomplicated sweet and steamy story. It takes place around Christmas, but that's not what this story is all about.

This book is about Spenser and Evan. Spenser is a very rich CFO, looking to pick up a one night stand at a gay bar, he doesn't do relationships. This is where he meets Evan and he is immediately captivated by the man.

Evan is an artist who is at the bar as a wingman for one of his friends. He's done with the hook-up scene. He is looking for a man who will still be there in the morning. Even though Evan is looking for more, he can't help but be interested in the scowling, yet handsome man. So they decide to go for a late night snack together.

Spenser is still not interested in offering more to Evan, but he can't stop thinking about the man either. Probably, because he is not used to getting turned down. He comes up with the perfect solution. A way to spend more time with Evan and also use him as a buffer against his family
He invites Evan to spend the holiday weekend with him and his family, as his "fake" boyfriend.

Instead of being offended, Evan is pretty charmed by this proposal. He doesn't have anyone else to spend the holidays with and since he can't seem to get Spenser out of his mind...why not.

These guys were pretty damn hot, once they got going. We even get some nice dirty talk !!

Ofcourse Spenser didn't expect to actually start feeling so much for Evan. But how can he be with Evan, when he is still half in the closet. He doesn't want to let his family down...but he doesn't want to give up Evan either.

"I love you, Evan Scott. You...you are my tomorrow"

I really enjoyed this short story. It didn't have too much drama and the steam was just right. I hope Jocelynn Drake will write many more stories like these :)

Reread December 2021

Yeap. I still loved it on my third read. 😁

Reread December 2019

Still one of my favourite Christmas novellas. Thanks to Snjez for reminding me of it this Christmas. Loved it all over again.

Original review:

I really like Jocelynn Drake 'Unbreakable Bonds' series, so I had high expectations for this Christmas story. Which, as my rating gives away, were all fulfilled and more.

I adored both MCs right from the beginning in equal measures. Both men are wonderfully drawn, and the dual POV helps to fully understand their actions.

Tall, dark, unapproachable Spenser and his snarky sense of humour appealed immediately. God, I loved his sass and the way he makes clear what he wants. *gulp* He reminded me a little bit of Ella Frank's Logan, a character I absolutely love. But with Spenser we know that something's off very soon. There is an air of sadness and mystery around him, a hidden vulnerability that just grabbed my heart and didn't let go.

Spenser makes clear from the beginning that he doesn't do relationships, that a 'tomorrow' is completely out of the question. One night stands are his MO. End of story.

Or is it? Enter Evan Scott. The guy who turns down Spenser's advances repeatedly when they meet in a bar. The guy who says 'no' to him and throws Spenser off his beaten track. The guy who is so genuine and sweet he awakens a need in Spenser he never thought he'd have.
Evan is brilliant. *sigh* He gives Spenser as good as he gets, and keeps surprising him in the best sort of way. And even though he accepts Spenser's stance towards relationships and that he will most likely get hurt, he can't help himself falling for the man.

Admittedly that kind of plot just slays me. And then we get the 'fake' boyfriend trope on top of it - which I also absolutely adore. To cut this short - This is a win-win situation!
But the absolute highlight here was the brilliant banter between the two men. Sharp and witty, it was highly enjoyable, and I know I will certainly reread this book just for that!

Throw in a great family and some wonderfully sweet moments and you have a Christmas story of the finest. Jocelynn Drake manages to pack an awful lot of goodness and depth into this shorter novel, and it is soooo worth it!

HIGHLY recommended.

This was my favorite holiday read so far. Yeah...it was my first holiday read. But I've read 2 others since and this one is still my favorite. :)

Would've been a full 5 stars without the ex Jerid incident at the end.

Likable characters, likable storyline, good steam, low angst!

This was such a great holiday story.

After reading the blurb, I was expecting this to feel kinda cookie-cutter...cold, rich guy and endearing starving artist all wrapped up in a fake relationship trope...but what I got was the opposite.

Spenser (I never did get used to the spelling of his name - it just looks weird to me?) may have started off as this distant, no strings, one and done, rich guy, but that doesn't last long at all. Evan quickly brings out the softer, charming and endearing side of Spenser.

Evan is not a "one and done" kind of guy. After being in some crappy relationships, especially his last one, he's realized that he shouldn't settle when it comes to the man he wants to spend his life with. He's worth more than a one night stand that usually ends in embarrassment and regret....he's worth someone's tomorrows.

After their initial meeting, where Evan rejects Spenser's sexual advances but they end up having a cute non-date, Spenser comes up with the plan that Evan would be a great buffer while spending the holiday weekend with his family. He can be there to lessen the attention on Spenser and Spenser can also try and work his magic to woo Evan into that one night that he really wants.

But those pesky emotions start butting in and Spenser realizes what he's been missing in his life. He begins to question if everything he's sacrificing for his family and the family business is worth it. It's clear his family loves him, but can he put their livelihood and of their employees on the line because of what he may want? His bigoted grandfather would cause a shit storm of epic proportions if Spenser finally came out.

Can I just say how refreshing it was having a story centered around a high society, wealthy family where they all were well-rounded, adjusted adults who loved each other like crazy. No dark family secrets or sibling jealousy or parental animosity....just a wonderful family unit that loves each other deeply and supports each other in everything they do.

Evan and Spenser were sweet and hot in equal measure. It was evident right from the beginning that these men clicked (the banter here is wonderful - especially their inside joke and debates about cereal), and it was just a matter of time before their hesitations were no match for the chemistry they had.

The author brought just the right amount of heat to the story. Not too much where you feel that's the only way they're connecting and not too little where you don't feel that part of their connection. It was equal parts passionate and intimate....and oh so hot!

I could have done without the small blip of the ex-boyfriend drama at the end, however, even with that little blip, I wasn't anything less than in love with this story.

Grab a blanket, a steaming cup of something warm and curl up with this great holiday book. It's the perfect wintry afternoon read.

"I want everything with you."

"Tomorrow?"

"All of them."

"Then they're all yours."

OMG! I'm the only person who didn't like this. AGAIN! I just have to accept and embrace the fact that I don't mesh with this author.

I can't exactly pinpoint it but there's an MF vibe in her books, a heteronormativity I can't explain.

I didn't like the characters nor did I get their actions. Evan doesn't do hookups, but he's all over Spenser and accepts his weird proposal just like that. Spenser doesn't do relationships but he's all over Evan too, whom he never treated as a simple hookup. And I didn't buy his reasons for needing a fake boyfriend.

The OTT-ness is still here, but not as much as in the Unbreakable Bonds series.

And the cherry on top, my biggest pet-peeve writing wise:
"The artist was a little paler...

The artist! 90% into the book and Spenser refers to the other MC as the artist! He has brought him to meet his family, he spent holidays with him, he fucked him, he fell for him, but in his mind he refers to him as the artist! Ugh...I can't with this, sorry. I know it's a personal thing but it bothers the crap outta me and this was just an example.

You know how sometimes reviewers say that "it's me, not the book" but what they mean is "the book was crap, not my fault"? This is NOT one of these times. This time it's really me! So don't mind me.

A certain Gallic Cheesy Elf (who is out of control in the best way!) gifted this book to me today, so I am going to give it a read right the frak now. :)

Thank you, GCE!!!! <3

------Review--------
This story isn't at all what I expected (in all the best ways) from reading the first chapter. At first, I was thinking I was going to be reading yet another rich, spoiled guy who can't take no for an answer and a more modest guy who gives in just because it is easier. That is not what I got (#ThankTheElves).

I wasn't sure I was going to like Spenser, but I really did! He was stuck trying to do the right thing for his family and the family business, by sacrificing his own happiness. All because his grandfather was a bigoted ass. The rest of his family was fantastic, though. Loved them.

And Evan, who is an artist and a musician, is ready to settle down. One night hookups just aren't satisfying at all. I loved how he told Spenser what he was willing to accept and what he wasn't.

And together, they set my Kindle on fire. LOVED.

Thanks again, GCE, for the gift of this delightful Christmas story. I loved it. :)

I liked this! Although the drama felt a bit…. off…

Spenser is the CFO in his family’s company. He is a bit of a cold, calculated man. But once he sees Evan in a club, he knows he has to have him. But Evan tells him no.

“Yeah, I’m done with the hook-up scene. Took me a while, but I think I’m a good enough guy to deserve tomorrow, too.”

The two end up having dinner at a diner and really hit it off. Even though Spenser doesn’t want anything more than a hookup, he invites Evan home to his family for Christmas. To act as some sort of buffer. Evan has no family, so he accepts, even though he knows it won’t lead to forever with Spenser..

I loved how Spenser started out as a bit of an asshole, but couldn’t maintain his cold exterior when he was with Evan. I loved how sweet they were with each other. And Spenser’s family was great!

There were also enough sexy times to keep all us perverts happy.

My one complaint is that the reason why Spenser couldn’t have a relationship felt a bit.. fabricated. When I think about it it’s not really that far-fetched, but I think it’s more the way it was written. As soon as the drama starts we get told all of this, but not shown. Even the outburst is told, not written down for us to read how people react themselves (I kind of wanted to know what kind of terrible things the grandpa said). Therefore I felt a bit detached from that part.

Still, this was a nice Christmas story with two sweet guys falling in love and I really enjoyed it.

Winner, winner [Christmas] Chicken Dinner!! 🎄🍗🍗🎄

5 stars rounded up from me. Great feel-good, fake boyfriend read from Jocelynn, complete with accepting and awesome family members, and the villain of the piece, the bigoted old sod of a grandfather. In the middle of it all, trying to keep the peace, Spenser Roland, CFO of his family's company but in the closet as far as his grandfather is concerned, cos he doesn't want to rock the boat for the rest of his immediate family members and Evan Scott, kicked out his home at 17 and now a successful artist and graphic designer.

They meet one night in a club, decide hooking up is something they've both gotten fed up with, and want the whole nine yards instead. Spenser wants to see Evan again and asks whether Evan will accompany him home for the holidays, Ah bless!! 🎄❄⛄🎅☃️🎄

I really loved this one! Before starting it, all I knew about this book would be that it's a Christmas novella. I refrained from reading the blurb or other reviews. Sometimes I love diving in clueless.
“It’s just that no one ever…”
No one ever took their time. No one ever cared whether he was truly satisfied. Spenser knew that was what he meant. And in truth, Spenser had never made such an effort before. So he allowed himself another first. He leaned in and slowly kissed Evan, memorizing the softness and the contours of his mouth. He’d never bothered to kiss a partner after sex. Never wanted to. Never needed it”.

I fell in love with Spenser and Evan from the start. Spenser is very serious CFO to a huge company, ruled by his bigoted grandfather. He's a workaholic, convinced he doesn't need to date.
Evan was a super sweet and funny artist. I laughed out loud many times. These MC's are so different, but they connect so well. Under his roughness and seriousness, Spenser was such a lonely man. But Evan's light-hearted attitude and smart mouth changed him and made him realize he deserved to be happy.

I was glad Evan didn't fall into bed with Spenser right away and stood his ground. But I knew the hot scenes would be awesome. Even their first kisses were super hot!

I usually don't like the fake boyfriend trope. BUT here I love it!
At first this story seemed pretty light and sweet. So the angst took me completely by surprise.
I love that we got their back stories. This author surely knows how to write intriguing characters.

What I did not like would be Spenser's choice of bringing Evan to his family on Christmas, knowing very well what will happen when his grandfather visited. Evan was too sweet and had such a big heart. He really didn't deserve to be treated like a secret, kept hidden. Not after their scorching hot nights and their growing feelings. So I would have liked Evan to make Spenser work harder to win him back.

The ending felt a little rushed, but I will give it 4,5 stars because I really enjoyed the writing and these characters were extremely hot together, but also super sweet and funny.
I know I would have enjoyed it more as a full novel, but I am pleased with what we got. For a novella we got pretty much. And I am so happy we got such a sweet epilogue.
“You are worth tomorrow and you are so worth all my tomorrows. But I’ll be happy if you’ll agree to one date with me, and then maybe you’ll be willing to negotiate with me for more.”

Dear book,

thank you for giving me some early, but much needed holiday feelz!

I will cut it short:

Great and very enjoyable holiday read - sometimes cute and heart-warming, sometimes sexy - that will put you in just the right mood, with absolutely loveable characters like Spenser who doesn't date
.:

and Evan who doesn't do hookups

Gorgeous; especially is grey eyes!:

You see, just the right premises... ;-)

Add some banter, great side characters, a fake-boyfriend trope and a bit hurt/comfort and I'm hooked. I just love my boys with a sometimes mysterious and sad aura...

Not to forget the probably most adorable invitation for a date ever! ;-)

Loved it! Recommended!

4 Christmas Stars!

You know what? This deserves all the kudos it’s already received, as this was certainly a fantastic holiday read!

To reiterate, powerful successful and filthy rich Spenser, should by all rights be happy and ready to spend the holidays with his family along with a special someone but there’s just one hitch. He must hide who he is to avoid a family scandal and hence he’s become cold, calculated and closed off to any possible relationships. That is until he meets Evan.

Evan can’t help but be charmed by the seductive business man. He can barely resist the pull but he must. He’s done with meaningless detentes but when Spenser implores Evan to accompany him to his family estate for the weekend, he can’t say no despite knowing that nothing more can come of their tryst.

So you know what’s going to happen. Feelings will get in the way which will ultimately be the impetus to kick Spenser in gear to fight for his happiness that’s due. What makes this a standout is the nice progression, the emotions that ensue and the palpable ust with satisfying smex, making this a wonderful Christmas present! Go on. Open it!

I just smashed this Christmas read out in one sitting, so yes, you could say I enjoyed this immensely!

I was hesitant going in, having never read a book by Drake before, but my worries were completely unwarranted. She's clearly a solid writer, who was able to create two charmingly honest and engaging characters who I instantly swooned over.

The MCs, Spenser and Evan - great names btw - shared some seriously palpable chemistry, which resulted in entertaining banter, incredible sex and sigh inducing romantic declarations. They were a match made in heaven, and I'm only disappointed I didn't get to spend more time reading about them.

I daresay this will be the M/M Christmas read of 2016 that I compare all others against. The bar has been set...

This was a great way to start the reading portion of my Christmas Season.

I am super proud of myself. I said I'd wait until December to start and I did wait until December to start. It wasn't easy. There were Christmas trees up in Walmart before Halloween and all the bloggers have been reading Christmas for a few weeks now. So yeah, Christmas has been in my face for quite some time.

I'm glad I waited until my tree was up and I am super glad that I started with this story. Although this wasn't over the top Christmasy it was a very sweet story that would probably only work with Christmas magic.

The end wasn't my favorite, well, not the end, the almost end. It was unnecessary in my opinion.

Me and this author are becoming very good friends, lol!

It's this time of the year when I crave for something easy with light angst, a comforting read where the guys have some troubles like a bigoted grandfather, where one of them is a big softie under a cold exterior and where it's no disadvantage if the other is easy-going in spite of a troubled past and even better if the inner family is nothing but wonderful.

Does it matter that it takes place in the world of the rich and beautiful, that the common guy is an artist and the theme of pretend boyfriend is not exactly new? No, not if it's like this book, not if it's sexy and the good feeling lingers a bit longer after reading it.

Cute Christmas romance that world have been almost perfect if the timing hadn’t been so rushed.

I know that many of you loved it and are gushing about it. I feel a bit bad to only rate it with 3 stars, but maybe I’m the odd duck.

I mean- yes, it’s a Hallmark Christmas plot, and the book is rather short. But WHY did it only cover 5 days (max) from the first meeting to I’ll burn my world down to be with you???

It’s the story of Spenser, a very rich, closeted gay company tycoon, who is intrigued by the guy who rejects his drink (and the prospect of a quick hookup) at a gay bar. And Ethan, who swore off one-night-stands and who wants a real relationship.

One day Ethan says no to hooking up, and they go to a greasy diner instead, the next day he agrees to visit Spenser’s family over Christmas as his fake boyfriend. And one week later, when the epilogue takes place, they’re already talking about having children together.

If everything would have happened in the span of a few months, or even weeks, I would have loved it. I know the book was short and there wasn’t time for a deep relationship buildup or character development, but… really. A shame.

If you’re looking for a quick holiday fix, you’ll love it, but remember to turn the logical part of your brain off 😂
