Leader of a human colony planet, Taryn Demara has much more on her plate than maintaining peace or ensuring her people have enough to eat. Due to a virus that affects male embryos in the womb, there is a shortage of men. For decades, her people have enticed ships to their planet and tricked the men into staying. However, a ship hasn’t been spotted in eight years. So when the blip finally shows on the radar, Taryn is determined to conquer the newcomers at any cost to ensure her people’s survival.
Prince Kason tro de Vallen needs to find a suitable planet for his people to colonize. The Kelderans are running out of options despite the fact one is staring them in the face—Planet Jasvar. Because a group of Kelderan scientists disappeared there a decade ago never to return, his people dismiss the planet as cursed. But Kason doesn’t believe in curses and takes on the mission to explore the planet to prove it. As his ship approaches Jasvar, a distress signal chimes in and Kason takes a group down to the planet’s surface to explore. What he didn’t expect was for a band of females to try and capture him.
As Taryn and Kason measure up and try to outsmart each other, they soon realize they’ve found their match. The only question is whether they ignore the spark between them and focus on their respective people’s survival or can they find a path where they both succeed?
Jessie Donovan has sold over half a million books, has given away hundreds of thousands more to readers for free, and has even hit the NY Times and USA Today bestseller lists. She is best known for her dragon-shifter series, but also writes about magic users, aliens, and even has a crazy romantic comedy series set in Scotland. When not reading a book, attempting to tame her yard, or traipsing around some foreign country on a shoestring, she can often be found interacting with her readers on Facebook. She lives near Seattle, where, yes, it rains a lot but it also makes everything green.
Oh, this was good! A really great idea! Usually we have big, strong, alien warriors abductiong eath women - here we have earth woman abducting aliens' males! LOL I liked Taryn for her strenght and her will for her whole race to survive. But I liked Kason too because of his open mindedness! They for a really lovely and well matched couple! I'm looking forward to the next book!
I read this one earlier but didn’t get around to doing a review. In the meantime I read another SciFi romance that really got my motor running and I’m thinking this one might suffer more from the comparison that if I had reviewed this before the other book (The Gladiator by Anna Hackett in case anyone is confused)
The outline covers pretty well what the books is about. Taryn is the leader of her people and will trick and pretend in trying to lure spaceships into her little planet in the universe. She needs more men to keep the population going. She and her people spot a space ship and make ready to get men.
Kason tro de Vallen is the military leader of his people and he is looking for another planet they can expand to as the planet he is from is running out of resources. He’s a wee bit full of himself, in a cute kind of way, and when they land on the planet thinks they can help all these women folk. Only Taryn is a pretty smart cookie and gets the drop on him and holds him prisoner.
Now while I found this book cute and funny in places, I didn’t really get the point of the whole thing. She needs more people, most especially men, to help out her planet and he needs to find a planet where his people can immigrate to. Easy Peasy in my opinion and not all that much to build a whole book upon. It was one of those books that wasn’t that bad, but I know I’ll never to a reread of and I’m not likely to keep up with the series. Sorry about that Ms. Donovan
Brace for a rant. I DNF at 15% and it took a month to get that far. I just couldn’t accept the premise of this book. A human colony is deliberately set up with little or no technology on a largely unknown planet. They aren’t even given a way to communicate with Earth or any neighbouring colonies. The community is almost immediately effected by a virus that kills 99% of male embryos in the womb leading to a colony in desperate need of men from off planet to keep the group going. Their solution? Lure in passing ships with an emergency beacon (yes they have that but didn’t use it to leave a planet they can’t successfully live on) and kidnap any men on board to use for breeding. The female MC of this book is also the current leader of this colony that has been limping along like this for a few generations and she has decided that enough is enough and plans to use the technology on the next ship they lure in to find a cure for the virus. Ok so are you getting an idea of why I couldn’t go any further with this book. I mean just the thought that a colony was set up with so little tech and then nobody bothers to check on them for quite literally a hundred years is a big stretch but even if you can buy into that, why kidnap the men and steal their ship?! Why not just ask for some help or request that they send a message to Earth asking for some help? Apparently there are so many human colonies in the galaxy that they are looked on as pests by other races but there isn’t one close enough to lend a hand? Also despite the fact that they have little or no technology the scientists in the colony have found a way to create serums from the native plants including a memory eraser and a truth serum. But they can’t develop a treatment for the virus? When the female MC captures the male MC does she explain the situation and ask for help? Nope she ties him to a chair and proceeds to treat him like shit and attempts to get info from him with the truth serum. There are a lot of obvious and far simpler solutions to the colonies problems but they decided to go for something unnecessarily complicated and almost doomed for failure. Apparently a lot of people liked this book but it just wasn’t for me. My suspension of disbelief can only stretch so far.

I recieved a complimentary copy of this book to read and write my honest review.
Jessie Donovan has proven herself time and time again in the paranormal genre and now she comes with a Sci-fi book to rock our worlds. Fast paced with intresting characters Jessie Donovan introduces us to a new world that she has built up perfectly. A very promising new series by the very talented author that i just can't wait to read more about!
My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!! ***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!
This is the first in a new series by Jessie Donovan. This is for adults only due to the steamy content, and there are no dragon shifters or shifters of any kind in this book.
As always Jessie has some awesome characters that definitely didn’t take me long to really like. I especially like Taryn’s determination and her never give up attitude. At first I wasn’t sure I was going to like Kason, he was arrogant and definitely sexist. He has grown on me because while he comes from a planet that underutilizes women, he values them above all. I love how he tries to keep an open mind and how Taryn keeps trying to push the limits further and further. They are a great pair, and I can’t wait to see what awaits the rest of them especially the Princess and Vala.
Jessie Donovan is fabulous at developing characters you want to know more about and that you become invested in. She knows how to balance drama and action to keep you engaged in the book. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
I recommend this book to anyone who loves Jessie’s writing style and to those Sci-fi lovers who likes aliens and space travel adventures.
Welcome to a brave new world, one like you'd never imagine. Donovan combines vivid world building with an intricate yet exciting plot to create a whole that held me captive from cover to cover. Her vibrant descriptions bring both planets along with the space ship to life in such a picturesque manner that I felt as if I were actually there alongside the characters. At the same time, the plot kept me on my toes, being both sizzling hot and endlessly exciting.
The vividly lifelike characters really draw you in. The main characters definitely held my attention the most. I loved getting to know them on so many different levels. On top of that, the supporting cast of characters were just as much fun to get to know. The myriad of personalities that we meet were fantastic. I love how Donovan not only develops individual characters but also entire races, right down to the most intricate detail, without taking away your ability to imagine and develop them in your mind.
This was a hot and exciting story that definitely has set this series off on the right foot. I'm counting down the days for the next installment because I can't wait to see what happens next.
CAPTIVATING, SEXY AND DELIGHTFULLY ENTERTAINING !!! Title: The Conquest Series: Kelderan Runic Warriors Author: Jessie Donovan Designation: Book One of Series, Standalone, NO Cliffhanger, #ScienceFiction #Romance Reading Platform: Kindle Edition My Rating: Five Delightfully Entertaining Stars***** I adore science fiction and addicted to steamy romance but throw in a generous helping of thrilling adventure seasoned with heart-pounding action, and I'm in heaven... especially when it's women kicking butt and taking names! lol... And Jessie Donovan has just delivered the perfect combination of every single one of these elements! Be still my heart! This is not my first rodeo with Jessie Donovan, so my expectations were high... and Donovan didn't disappoint! It's no secret I'm a diehard Donovan fan and have been for years, but who knew she could write such fabulous science fiction romance! I have quite a few favorite authors and, usually, they're different for each genre. Not every author who writes contemporary or paranormal romance can pen great science fiction, no matter how talented or skilled they are. Each author must find their own niche and, make no mistake, Donovan writes fabulous paranormal romance but, oh my goodness, she totally nailed it with her very first offering in a brand new romantic sci-fi series! I'm completely smitten with the Kelderan Runic Warriors Series.
The Conquest is a riveting, fast-paced, exceptionally well-crafted full-length standalone science fiction romance. The narrative is beautifully written in the third person with clearly defined his and her perspectives. The dialogue is smart, snappy, well executed, easy to follow, and flows effortlessly. I was completely fascinated by the premise for this new series but it's the large diverse cast of engaging characters who literally exploded from the pages, ensnared my imagination and completely captured my heart. Who doesn't love beautiful, brave, strong-willed warrior heroines and courageous, protective, handsome and oh so sexy heroes, right? I was immediately drawn into the story during the first few pages and fell head over heels for the two protagonists, Kelderan Prince Kason tro el Vallen and Jasvarian Colony leader Taryn Demara . Kason is a prince from a patriarchal society where women are to be seen and not heard, whereas Taryn, by necessity, governs a matriarchal colony. These two were polar opposites, yet they were a perfect pairing. Their attraction was immediate, their interaction captivating, their sexual chemistry electric, their passion explosive and their fate undeniable despite their differences and the danger surrounding them. The connection between these two remarkable characters literally sizzled!
Did I like this book? No, I LOVED it! The Conquest is a captivating science fiction adventure romance with an untypical take on the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ and includes a generous helping of action, adventure, danger, and drama along with some hot alien males who thinks the little woman’s place should always be at home as well as some smart plucky heroines who don’t mind using all their assets. And, of course, some smokin’ hot romance... This is a Jessie Donovan story, we're talking about! This book gives a whole new meaning to 'Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus'! lol.... Let the games begin! Would I recommend it? You bet and I am but only for adult readers since it does contain some steamy love scenes. Will I read this author again? Duh....Of course! Just as soon as she releases her next book! And finally was I entertained? Completely! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome reader! I can hardly wait for the next book in the series!
As leader of the Jasvarian colony, it's Taryn Demara's job to ensure the safety and well-being of her people. It's a difficult job since most of the population is female and what little technology they have is failing. The low-tech human colony was originally established several hundred years ago but they have long since lost contact with Earth. As the result of a strange virus on the planet, male embryos are targeted in the womb with the mother miscarrying early in the pregnancy, thereby resulting in a mostly female society. Stealing technology and kidnapping males from the ships foolish enough to land on Jasvar has become the colonists only means of survival. And as leader of the ragtag group, it's Taryn's job to invent ways of luring unsuspecting ships to the planet. She thought she was prepared for any scenario but Taryn has never met the likes of Kelderan Prince General Kason tro el Vallen. Kason is on a scouting mission to Jasvar. His home planet of Keldara has become overpopulated and running out of natural resources. His people desperately need a new planet to colonize and Jasvar would be perfect. Or so he tried to convince his father the king. No one seems to know anything about the mysterious planet other than the rumors of the strange disappearance of everyone who dares to land on the surface. Well, maybe not so perfect, after all. He may have bitten off more than he can chew. When Kason decides to accompany the landing party to the planet's surface, he gets quite a surprise. Being captured by a certain female Jasvarian leader who's not afraid to use her feminine wiles to her advantage, may end up being the best kidnapping ever! Sparks fly! Attraction builds! Passion ignites! Oh my! Buckle up, my lovelies! It's a wild ride! Who will win this battle of the sexes?
Wow oh wow just loved loved this book...so very different from other Jessie books. I love the developing relationship between Kason and Taryn .....both stubborn both headstrong and both perfect for each other.....brilliant book
I love this author's dragon shifter series and was excited to hear she would be doing some sci-fi romances.
The book is a great read for those that love sci-fi romances. It offers great characters and a fun adventure. Taryn is the leader of a human colony on a planet that has little resources. They face a major challenge in that male fetuses result in miscarriages so there are few males left to populate the colony. The colony has resorted to trying to entice and/or trick males that land there to stay to help with the issue. When they see a ship in the area, they start the process to fool them into thinking they are looking for help. Prince Kason tro de Vallen is in charge of the ship. He is suspicious but feels he must try to help women in need. When they meet, it is clear that it is going to be complicated. His people want to claim the planet and Taryn won't make it easy for them.
They make a really great couple. I really liked how protective they are of the people they care about. They work hard to lead their people. The focus on work has left them little time for romance. It is clear from their first meeting that there is a real strong connection between them but it will complicate everything if they act on it. They have a lot to negotiate both personally and professionally. I like that the author lets both of the main characters get to directly share their thoughts and feelings as it helped me feel closer to the characters. The author doesn't rush their relationship but lets them have time to learn about each other.
I am really looking forward to more books in the series.
I loved this book! The world building was amazing and the idea of humans over populating the galaxy was accurate.
I loved Taryn her need for social justice and equality was pretty cool without it being overbearing. I loved her strength and determination to help her people as best she could.
Kason though typical patriarch mind set his character was enjoyable too. I admire his duty and his faults along with his ability to admit he had an equal match in Taryn.
The only thing that really bothered me about the storyline was the idea of The Barren. When you read the book you'll know, it will piss you off though that's a given. But I LOVED the overall plot and looking forward to seeing more of this world thank you Jessie. Definitely a most read.
Started off kind of terribly with the women luring in the men with deception, to try and get more men for their population, and the men coming from a terribly patriarchal, misogynistic society. The Kelderans are so bad that they treat women who are barren like they aren't even people. If women are tested at birth for barrenness, why aren't the guys tested? It is such frustrating world building that I started the book with a serious dislike for both groups.
Given those issues, I still found it to be an OK story and the characters grew on me. However I don't know if I want to read more about the Kelderans, given the patriarchy. I read to escape, and we already live in a patriarchy. I hardly want to spend my time in a worse one.
A bit of a rough start getting into this book I will admit but by the middle and end of it I was hooked. If you liked other books by Jessie Donovan then I believe you will enjoy the first book of this series as well. I've read her dragon books and thought I would try her science fiction and alien romance next. Donovan creates a science fiction setting that is easy to follow and opens up to a whole new way to view the universe.
Taryn is determined to help her people on their dying population no matter the cost. While Prince Kason is determined to find a place for his people to colonize. Both will do whatever for their people and though they are the most stubborn life forms, they couldn't be more perfect for one another. After proving her strength and intelligence Taryn finds herself on Kason's ship with a way to negotiate with the Kelderans. Though their relationship starts off shaky and is filled with bargains to get what they want for others, they soon realize that the spark between them goes farther than just bargains. With introductions of interesting characters, fights, adventure, and conflict that will open up the storyline for the rest of the series, I believe this is a story worth reading and I look forward for the next book!
Usually the Sci-Fi story is about a shortage of the females, with the males of the alien species desiring human females from earth. The ups and downs in acquiring their mates, falling in romantic love, and fighting off rivals, enemies, and even family members usually provides enough interesting scenarios that I am captivated enough to finish the book. Enjoy!
The Conquest (Kelderan Runic Warriors Book 1) pulled me out of my reading slump.
An enemies to lovers, patriarchal society clashes with matriarchal society, grumpy warrior meets badass female warrior leader who shocks and inspires him, quick read sci-fi romance.
Jessie Donovan is one of my “go to” authors and for good reason, give this book and any of her others a chance!
Captivated again. Just when I thought I could not get enough of Jessie's Dragon stories, she writes an outstanding, sexy, can't put book down til finished because you just have to know what is going to transpire next. Absolutely loved the surprise by thinking okay Thorin is going to be a bad guy, lol...
This story has a great beginning and continues the plot line throughout the book, leaving many twists and turns. The characters are great, sexy, funny, and relatable. The scenery is vivid for the reader.
Highly recommended for readers that like sci-fi. I've already put the other books to do Siri on my TBR list.
Great world Jessie has created! Loved the characters and the inspiration that females can do more than the traditional female duties. The audio I was a bit disappointed because they spoke just like robots at times. Other than that it is a great story over all and I can’t wait to read what’s next.
Well written, good characters that were likeable and a good plotline with plenty of room for expansion later in the series. A nice uncomplicated HEA story that is in no way traditional.
This book has a hopeful feel. With some mystery and sexy bits as well. It's a complete story with a HEA and introduces future book characters. I look forward to more !!!
It is such an amazing read. I love the colonies and what they represent and the changes that are happening. I just love the monarchy. The changes that happen in this series is awe inspiring and makes you want for more. when this book was done i was like. Nooo i want more and more and more
Loved this book and looking forward to reading more in this series! Taryn and Prince Kason meet under unusual circumstances, but being destined mates has a way of bringing them together. They must work together to secure the future of both their people and planets. Their chemistry is undeniable.
I prefer the 2nd book in the series that focuses on Vala and Thorin, but it's nice to see their beginning as well as how the Jasvarian colony got started.
Got this as it covered 1 of my popsigar novel set on another planet. It was a 99p job wish I forked out a bit more on something better. Started out ok but what a job to finish. Not for me at all
