this changed my life. /the/ book about the hong kong predicament to end all books about and set in hong kong!!! i know it's all about Oh Woe Social Alienation in this Uncaring Unforgiving Modern Society ... oh how modern-day hong kongers are displaced and rootless ... but she juxtaposes that with this bittersweet nostalgia for the [Distinctly Chinese Cultural] Past and some of the most beautiful passages of vernacular chinese i've read in my life im wheeze. i miss this novel so badly
Such a classic novel, have heard of this fabled story a couple of times having spent a part of my childhood in hong kong surrounded by native cantonese speakers. A special book for me as I haven’t really touched on novels depicting hong kong during the 70s~. As long as it’s just fictional story, I get more of an idea of the vibrant, with a slight hint of melancholy atmosphere during those times ( hk is a naturally saturated city, but there were many corruption going on back then ). And honestly, I feel a bit homesick after reading it lol.
