If you like one, you'll probably like them all.
Kendel Lynn is a Southern California native who now parks her flip-flops in Dallas, Texas. She read her first Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators at the age of seven and has loved mysteries ever since. Her debut novel, Board Stiff, was an Agatha Award nominee for Best First Novel. It features Elliott Lisbon, a mostly amateur sleuth who has a slight aversion to all things germy and is only five thousand hours away from getting her PI license. Along with writing, she spends her days editing, designing, and figuring out ways to avoid the gym but still eat cupcakes for dinner.
This is the fourth book in the Elliott Lisbon series as well as two novellas, but the first one I read (or listened to in this case). I had not difficulty following the story of Elli and her friends, but will go back and read the others, as I really enjoyed this book. Elliott is working on her PI license and only needs 4000 more hours of investigative work. She fits in the hours while working as charity director for the Ballantyne Foundation. Their spring fundraiser, The Irish Fling, is sponsoring a corned beef and cabbage cook-off. While looking for her favourite corned beef entry, she stumbles across Chef Carmichael standing over his sister-in-law, Lola with a bloody knife. Lola is also a friend of Elliott and is at the event on her invitation. Chef confesses to the murder and does not want investigation. has her investigating the murder of a local trailer park owner. Elliot knows Chef is not a killer so starts to investigate the crime as well as find the reason why Chef is taking the blame. This plunges Elliot into the chaos of the Carmichael family's affairs as well as learning about the trailer park Lola owns, with all its various renters and issues. Not only is she investigating the crime (without a lot of support from the police), but Lola has left her two pugs to Elliott's boss who is out of town, so she has to keep them until their return. Things are not going well at work either with a lot of animosity between directors. When Lola's daughter, Lucy arrives in town, Elliott tries to mend fences with her old friend who is a PI in Texas. There are several suspects and clues sprinkled throughout the story. Elliott busy investigating all the guest chefs and trailer park renters. This is a relatively short story that moves quickly and I enjoyed meeting the various residents of Sea Pine Island, South Carolina and look forward to finding out more about them as I go back and read the rest of this series.
There's more bad karma going on at the Ballantyne Foundation and Elliot Lisbon is out to save the reputation of the foundation and her job. This has been a great series and this book is no exception. Elliott just can't help herself but get involved much to the chagrin of her Lieutenant boyfriend. Naturally there are lots of suspects and quite the number of quirky characters. For such a small island, there are a lot nefarious characters. Some who
The madcap adventures that ensue are hilarious, while also at times, being dangerous. I always find this series to be fun, entertaining and enjoyable.
Thanks to Henery Press for approving my request and to Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this one. I read it in a hurry because I had to return it. I think it was a bit better than #3, but I did have a problem keeping all the characters straight. There were too many of them to keep good track of. There were Chef, Jessie, Virginia, Lola, Lucy, Charles, Bitsy, Tug, Imogene, Austin, and Hollis. No one could be developed extremely well. Although all seemed to be in character at all times and how they behaved ultimately wasn't a surprise, it was still a lot to try and keep track of when you are juggling the stories of a murder, a shooting, two dogs (who are dognapped), and Jane who, quite frankly, I wouldn't mind seeing knocked off in a future novel. That woman drives me crazy!
I do like that many of the characters reoccur and that does give the author a better chance to flesh them all out.
But this mass of people was just undoable.
The other thing that sort of was unsettling is that there is no island that is 1/2 hour from Savannah and from Beaufort. And a trip to Charleston would take all day as it would be close to 200 miles round trip and you have to factor in the traffic from a good way out.
Even so, I do like the series and am looking forward to #5.
Fourth outing in the series starring Elliott Lisbon, charity director of the Ballantyne Foundation, a charity to disburse the endowment of the Ballantynes to worthy organizations. Headquartered in a location in South Carolina which resembles a cross between Hilton Head, S.C., and Sea Island, Ga., Ellie is continuing to work on acquiring her P.I. license while shielding the Ballantynes, her quasi-adoptive parents, from any bad press or emotional upsets. Elliott lives in a cottage on the beach next door to the once and now again love of her life, a detective in the local police force, who seems to spend most of his time trailing or saving Elliott. In this adventure, Lola, an elderly friend of Elliott and the Ballantynes is murdered after requesting Elliott to obtain information about someone who has paid the outstanding balance on a mortgage of a trailer park she owns. Lola's daughter, Lucy, an old friend of Elliott's, is shot and Elliott tries to solve these crimes while engaged in her full-time job hosting activities of the Foundation.
I like this series more with each book. Elliott Lisbon is a fascinating character. It seems like each book gives her a chance to reflect and grow. A friend is murdered at the annual Pot of Gold event and it is a chef who is participating and affiliated with the Ballantyne is caught holding the knife that killed the woman. He confesses. But, Elliott and others believe he is innocent and protecting someone else. So, she investigates. She also runs into an old friend who she lost touch with. This causes some internal reflection. This was a fast-paced book. I did figure out who was guilty but it did not detract from my enjoyment. A solid entry in the series. I'm enjoying Elliott's reflection and growth.
I enjoy reading this series, it's funny and always has a good mystery attached. Elliott is working on her PI license and only needs 4000 more hours or work. She fits in hours while working as charity director for the Ballantyne Foundation. Their spring fundraiser , a corn beef and cabbage cookoff has her investigating the murder of a local trailer park owner. Lots of suspects and clues has Elliott busy investigating all the guest chefs and trailer park renters. This is book 4 and you don't have to read the previous books to enjoy this cozy, you'll want to find out more about Elliott Lisbon and her small South Carolina friends.
Elliott is always a delight and so is her BFF, Sid. Those two get into some hilarious scrapes. Her boyfriend, Ransom, is finally the one getting better. He was such a put off in the first few books, it was a wonder why Elliott even liked him. So I’m thankful he’s redeeming himself because we all love our girl and want her to have an awesome love who makes her his world. The mystery was perfect as always and I love this series.
A mystery payment, a murder, a dognapping & so much more. Elli has her hands full this time. Can she figure it out before the Ballantynes return? This is the best one yet. The story was fast paced & well written. I hope that Lucy is in more of the books, I think she & Elli would make a great team. I look forward to reading more.
Pot Luck is another great read in the Elliott Lisbon series. So many twists and turns throughout it keeps you engaged and guessing. I appreciate the storyline continuity so you feel like you really know Elliott, Ransom, the Ballantyne’s….. etc. You become part of the community. Enjoyable read for sure.
A silly plot with characters that evoked no sympathy from me. The best parts of the story were the two puppies, who were the only lovable and funny characters. This is the first, and probably last, book I've read/listened to in this series.
My new favorite female and crew! Humorous without being stupid, thrilling without being gratuitously violent, romance without the play-by-play and a mystery that makes sense in the end. Enjoy!
A modern cozy mystery with things I like: independent women, interesting setting, some rich people, a little romance and characters likable and not so likable.
Elliott is a fun and feisty protagonist with a reason to sleuth. Her investigation is logical and thorough making it wild but believable. Enjoyed this installment.
Kendel Lynn’s Pot Luck is the fourth book in the Elliott Lisbon series. Lynn doesn’t make it habit of revealing past Elliott cases and if you haven’t read the first three books in the series, it’s not necessary to do so in order to enjoy Pot Luck.
We continue to have good character development. Often times, an author will forget that there are new readers to a series, but Lynn doesn’t forget. We still get information about Elliot’s love of hand sanitizer and why, but we also find out what Elliot was like when she was younger. I loved finding out about how she took a young woman under her wings and how that young lady followed in her footsteps. I liked the character growth as well as that of secondary characters. We also have a few new characters and I admit, the pugs stole the show!
I liked that Pot Luck was all about Elliott. She has some assistance from friends, but in many ways this was just about Elliot and her promise not to give up on a particular character (I won’t go into detail because it would spoil the book). It was also fun seeing certain characters say no to Elliott. Readers of the series will know right away who they are, but if you’re new to the series, you should have no problem guessing who it is.
What I enjoyed about Pot Luck was the overall mystery surrounding the motive and suspect. I know a lot of people say they don’t read mysteries because they can tell right away who did it, but Lynn really takes us on a ride. Secrets are revealed and just when I think I had it all figured out, Lynn proved me wrong. Although, I keep hoping the Ballantyne Foundation will finally get a break and no more bad things will happen, but then again we won’t solve cases alongside Elliott.
Overall, Kendel Lynn’s Pot Luck is a delight! Not only does Lynn give us a clever title (I confess it took me a few days after I finished reading to make a connection), but it was such a fun read! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Elliott as she’s one hour closer to achieving her PI license. My only real complaint? I wish there had been more of Ransom, but the pugs made up for it!
I enjoyed this very much. I got some chuckles out of some of the happenings. Like Elli's unorthodox way of getting out of places she's checking out when she's not supposed to. Will Elli ever get her PI license? She tries hard to come up with who did the murder. Looking forward to the next one in the series.
This fourth book in the Elliott Lisbon Mystery series lives up to it predecessors by keeping you guessing the entire way through the story as Elliott methodically works to solve a murder, shooting and shady real estate dealings. Being in Elliott's head as she works through her methodology is hilarious at times and down right entertaining at others.
With a cast of quirky secondary characters, there are never dull moments, with snarky Southern mindsets and entitlement mentalities, there is plenty of tension to keep Elliott twisting and turning to please a plethora of individuals and their needs while working towards her PI license by solving the goings-on at the Ballantyne Foundation and on Sea Pine Island. With Elliott's inner monologues and her self effacing mentality, you can't help but love her...she keeps me coming back to read about her OCD and love life worked into whatever mystery befalls the island.

My Review:
Elli is a character with many facets. Director of the Ballentyne Foundation, Private Investigator in training and foster mother to two adorable Pug babies. She and the other characters living and working on Sea Pine Island are likable and believable. The plot of Pot Luck centers around a cook off and the 20 chefs competing. There is also a sub-plot dealing with an old friend turned nemesis. With many twist and turns the reader is glued to the story from the first word to the last.
Ms. Lynn writes in such away as to make you feel the sea breeze on your face and in the case of "Pot Luck" you can almost taste the cabbage and corned beef cooking out back on the Ballentyne lawn. The well developed characters and laid out story line the reader can not help but enjoy this book.
Pot Luck by Kendel Lynn is a cozy mystery with a fantastic plot--so many twists and turns, surprises, and suspects that it makes your head spin. Elliott (Elli) Lisbon is the Director of the billion-dollar Ballantyne Foundation. Since she often finds herself in the middle of other people’s problems, she is also in “hot pursuit” of her PI license with only “four thousand hours” until she becomes official.
The story is sprinkled with humor through references to Elli’s OCD regarding cleanliness issues and to her temporary responsibility for two adorable pug puppies, Colonel Mustard and Mrs. White, named for characters in the board game Clue. Interactions with other characters also provide amusing dialogue.
The setting is a beach resort area, Sea Pine Island, near Savannah, providing both exotic beach life and glimpses of higher and lower echelons of Southern society. There is a love interest for Elli as former FBI agent Nick Ransom, who is currently working as a lieutenant in Sea Pine Island, interacts with Elli. Tight lipped, he is actually not a valuable resource in solving cases, but Elli is attracted to him and is not deterred in her investigative work by his efforts to discourage her for her own safety.
There is a subplot involving Lucy, a former friend of Elli’s, who is currently working as a PI. The backstory may be explained in a previous book as this is the fourth in the Elliott Lisbon Mystery Series. In Pot Luck they have a strained relationship, and Lucy has an deep resentment of Elli. She blames Elli for not keeping in touch over the years, but their issues seem to go deeper than is explained in this book.
I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Henery Press for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Notes: The author included several phrases that I found irreverent. One example is “For the love of Jesus in a jumpsuit.” I realize this would not bother all readers and is mild compared to that found in many books. It actually would not keep me from reading another book by this author, but I did not appreciate its inclusion nor did I think it added authenticity to the work. It seemed strained.
I have to admit that it was the adorable cover that first drew my attention and if that was the whole book I would have been satisfied, but of course there was so much more to this fascinating mystery. The central character of the series, Elliot Lisbon, is working on the hours she needs for her private investigator license under the mentorship of the police department. That does not meant however that she gets as much cooperation as she wants. For this case, the Foundation's chef is accused of murdering a friend of the family so the case is truly close to Elli's heart. With no help from the accused or from the daughter of the victim and well aware of the danger she faces, Elliot refuses to give up. I enjoyed Elliot and her friends but I didn't have the close attachment that I have with my favorite cozy characters. That is not surprising since this is a female detective novel rather than a cozy mystery. Even Elliot sees that she holds back, except with the puppies, the Ballantynes, and her best friend Sid. I see some emotional opening in this book and hope to see more in future books since I really like these characters. Although I own a couple of books from the series in my humongous TBR stack, this is the first book I have read by Kendel Lynn and it worked just fine as a standalone but Pot Luck has something special that I look forward to connecting with again. I requested an received a copy of this book via Netgalley. The review is voluntary and expresses my opinion. I review all books that I enjoy and this one, I thoroughly enjoyed Pot Luck!
Ok, this is book four of the series and Elliot and Nik haven't hooked-up yet...what's up with that? Maybe Elliot's just too busy taking care of the pug puppies, finding a pot farm on wheels, solving a shooting, and a murder all while running the Ballantyne Fiundation and working on her PI license. I was hoping that Kendal Lynn would throw a little romance into the mix. I've enjoyed the sunny escape while I watch it snowing outside. Will there be a book five to keep me warm?

It is spring on the island and Ballantyne Foundation is sponsoring a cooking contest for corn beef and cabbage. Elliot knows Chief Tom is not a killer so starts to explore for reason Chief Tom taking the blame. This plunges Elliot into the chaos of the Carmichael family ' affairs. Lola's daughter Lucy arrives from Texas and brings to charming pug puppies to Elliot. The puppies belong to Lola and her will leaves them to Vivi who will not be back until later in the week. Before Elliot finds the answer to the killing she will experience breaking and entering, a dognapping, Lucy is shot, a marijuana factory, fire. I recommend this book.

I have been following the Elliot Lisbon series since the beginning. In fact, I believe Board Stiff (Elliot Lisbon #1) was the first Henery Press book I read. I loved the book and Henery Press has become one of my favorite mystery publishers. This fourth Elliot Lisbon mystery has a pair of adorable, roly-poly pugs that Elliot must guard after their owner is murdered and an attempt to kidnap the puppies is made. If cute puppies is not enough to convince you to read Pot Luck, then how about a challenging mystery, a trailer park, chicken & waffles, a dose of humor, and some fun, quirky characters? I thought so. Dive into Pot Luck, or if Elliot Lisbon is new to you, start with Board Stiff.
This is the third of Me Lynn's books I have read. I'm hooked. Now I'll have to read everything she has written or writes.. Way to go, Ms Lynn. If I keep buying books, I'm going to be bankrupt. But what a way to go. I'm a fan of Stephanie Plum. Own and have read multiple times every one. These stories take me back to Hilton Head Island and the Southern culture I grew up with. Thank you for reminding me.
Kendel Lynn has given us another well written, humorous, engaging woman in Elliott Lisbon. I am always on the lookout for and greatly entertained by a Kendel Lynn book. If you haven't read this series , my question to you is why? Trust me, I really think you'll like it.
