Incredibly creative
The author really has a gift for world-building. There are more innovative ideas for superheroes then you see in dozens of comics or other super-powered books. While they are a little bit on the grim side he effectively grapples with the reality of what it would mean to have essentially god-like figures appear in the world. Fair warning the results are sometimes not pretty.
What makes the whole thing work however is the focus on individual heroes. Both Hector and Jason are well-rounded and interesting. I would have loved to see a little bit more of each of them, but I certainly enjoyed what was there.
My only quibble with this book is it's actually a little too idea packed. In the climactic battle scene the author introduces a dozen new heroes all with fascinating powers and interesting little backstories. All I could think was more more more, I want to read about all of these guys. Sometimes it feels like we get a little bit short shrift, where scenes could be spread out a little bit more and additional detail added. It sometimes feels a little rushed. But if you feel like you never see anything new in the superhero genre, this and the first book are for you.
