About the author

Daniel Armand Lee, whose Korean name is Lee Seon-Woong (이선웅), is more commonly known by his stage name Tablo (타블로). He is a hip hop musician, rap artist, songwriter and lyricist. He is best known as the rapper and leader of the South Korean hip hop group Epik High.

ok!! so i ordered this the moment tablo put out the amazon link and it arrived today!!!!!
first of all i am so grateful we have someone like him and i'm so so thankful he chose to do the translations himself. this is a very meaningful book- i'm definitely keeping beside my bed whenever my heart feels restless.

so it starts like this the aphorisms here don't pretend to be the beginning or end of any grand idea. but i'm hoping that they can be the beginning of an inspiration or an end to a worry. and this already makes you feel easy and calm.

i really adore the soft voice he uses in his writing- the words can strike you but the blow is soft and meaningful.

you sigh, saying that its getting harder to follow your heart. but you never had much of a heart to follow
ouch.. just, ouch.

not loving yourself back is also unrequited love

many of these pages hit so close to home. especially for the now me.
my mother's job is done- now i'm the one trying to give birth to myself.

also- maybe one of the rawest lines: her boyfriend was too much of a boy and too little of a friend.

i am so happy i finally have my hands on this gem.

Sebelumnya, aku sempat membaca buku kumpulan kutipan kata-kata tapi dengan pengaturan berdasarkan rasa: sedih, marah, bahagia. Baru setengah jalan, aku sudah merasa bosan. Kumpulan kutipan kata-kata yang diatur acak dengan aftertaste berbeda seperti buku ini memang lebih baik. Pembaca seperti diombang-ambing dalam makna dan tidak sedikit membuatku menutup sebentar buku itu dan berpikir akan hal seputar kutipan yang barusan kubaca.

Bagi penggemar musik Korean hip-hop, nama Tablo sudah tak asing. Dan aku kenal dirinya dari Epik High yang sudah 3 tahunan kudengar lagu-lagunya. Aku meminjam buku ini dari seorang kawan, dan mungkin akan membelinya suatu saat nanti. Mungkin.

Terlepas dari siapa penulisnya, aku jadi mulai mengerti kenapa buku kutipan kata-kata seperti ini semakin marak di pasaran dan semakin digandrungi. Kalau karya nonfiksi memberikan dampak secara mendetail, membaca karya kutipan kata-kata memberikan dampak secara lebih mengawang-awang. Penuh dengan kebebasan memaknai karena tak ada batasan. Seperti puisi dalam fiksi, tapi yang ini lebih sederhana.

Beberapa kutipan kata-kata yang kusuka dari buku ini:

Touching, witty, and endlessly surprising. There's lot to be gained from reading it in the original Korean, even if your fluency is limited, but I've heard good things about the English translation if that's not for you. Highly recommended.

Very much wish I could read this in the original language, but this English version (which I've
read is translated by Tablo himself) still comes across as quite thought provoking. Aphorisms that are witty and pretentious, yet still came across as self-deprecating and sincere.

"In such a cold world, why covet being cool?"

I kind of agree with some reviewers here that Tablo might do without publishing this as a 'book'. Many of the 229 quotes / lyrics / short poems weren’t even that profound or interesting. But as you can clearly see, I still gave it an almost perfect rating. I rate my books as a measure of how much fitting my reading experience was at that particular point of time, and after some very hard weeks fighting with depression and ADHD, this book gave me some brief moments of precious relief. Might be a combination of me not being able to concentrate on large blocks of texts lately and my pre-existing devotion for Tablo's lyrical genius. Whatever the case, I for one have to be grateful that this got published at the end.


Stuff I loved:

I did all that I could. It’s just that I needed to do what I couldn’t.

เป็นหนังสือที่เป็นตัวแทนนิยามของวลี ‘น้อยแต่มาก’ ได้จริงๆ ตัวหนังสือไม่กี่ตัวอักษรและไม่กี่บรรทัดในแต่ละหน้า แต่พี่ทาโบลถ่ายทอดออกมามีความหมายได้ลึกซึ้ง สวยงาม และละเอียดอ่อนมากๆ นอกจากพี่ทาโบลจะเป็นศิลปินและนักแต่งเพลงที่เก่งมากๆคนนึงแล้ว พี่ทาโบลก็ยังเป็นนักเขียนวรรณกรรมที่ยอดเยี่ยมมากๆคนนึงอีกด้วย พ่ายแพ้ต่อมนุษย์ที่มีพรสวรรค์ประดิษฐ์ตัวหนังสือ ต้องเป็นคนละเอียดอ่อนขนาดไหนถึงถ่ายทอดออกมาสวยงามแบบนี้ <3 และขอชื่นชมผู้แปลด้วยที่แปลเป็นไทยได้สวยงามมาก

Blonote là cuốn sách tổng hợp những câu nói mà tác giả (Tablo) đọc cho thính giả của mình nghe trong chương trình “Dreaming with Tablo”. Trong quyển này có nhiều câu nói mình thấy hay cũng có nhiều câu mình không hiểu lắm. Và trong quyển này cũng có nhiều chữ viết tay của ca sĩ, diễn viên, nghệ sĩ hài, học sinh... Mình có một sự bất ngờ nhẹ khi cầm quyển sách này trên tay vì không nghĩ là nó sẽ nhỏ thế.

Thoughts for all seasons of life

Blonote is a book of thoughts and pithy statements by Korean artist Tablo. Written during his time as a late-night DJ and used as show closer in lieu of the standard “goodnight”, Blonote is an easy read that I finished in one sitting. While it is true that many of the sayings aren’t anything new, there were also quite a few that made me stop and think. As I read my way through this book I couldn’t help but feel like I was getting a glimpse into some of the more personal feelings of the author. In quite a few instances, I could feel the pain, frustration or anger in the words.

If I had to pick a few stand-outs to quote, for me, there really were too many to choose from, however, I will say that a few of my favorites are: “Parents. Next time you wish you go to choose them, remember that they also didn’t choose you.”, “I want to leave for somewhere I won’t want to leave” and “A child smiles at a butterfly and cringes at a moth. The moth is confused.”

If you are an Epik High fan or a fan of Tablo’s solo work in the world of K-Pop I would recommend picking up Blonote. While I understand that this book may not appeal to everyone, for those who are familiar with the author and his other ventures I would classify this as a “must read”.

Are among some of the 10 or so pieces that made me pause and consider and appreciate, vs the hundred other pages that I quickly digested and swiftly forgot about because they read like a lot of other people's average work.

I don't particularly like when writers lean on antanaclasis, antistasis, antimetabole, and chiasmus because it's such as easy way to come across as ultra deep, but there are times when the repetition of a word hits itself, like sunlight bouncing off walls and mirrors, and it seems to be an unlocking moment where the universe (through the writer) graciously gives you an answer you didn't know you were searching for but was all along in that same word, like matryoshka dolls. So I can see how Tablo's writing can affect people.

I guess I'm just disappointed in the way where everything was exactly what I expected? If you've liked almost everything Tablo's put out, you'll love this but I seem to be just too picky. Fever's End remains my favorite of his solo work.

unfortunately, i 'm reading it online on wattapad and it's still on going, but i feel it's kinda sincere. I mean i love tablo as a rapper and the songs that he writes, i 'm always startled by his words. and having the access to read this "short bursts of thought" meant something to me.

i know he is not an author *which makes me relieved because honestly i can't call this a book* but he surely touches my heart in a way or another.

So, here's some quotes\thoughts which i loved:

Aku inget banget baca buku ini pas di perjalanan mau ke daerah baru alias merantau karena tempat kerjaku pindah. Sepanjang perjalanan, aku nggak berhenti baca buku ini. Buku ini banyak ngasih insight buat aku tentang hal-hal yang seharusnya nggak aku pikirin terlalu berlebih (sewajarnya aja) dan hal-hal lain yang jauh lebih bermanfaat ketimbang melamun, duduk, merenung dan sebagainya.

Disini banyak banget kalimat-kalimat yang seolah-olah menamparku karena relate banget. But, despite all of that, aku seneng bisa baca buku ini karena motivasiku langsung naik habis baca buku ini hahahaha...

Ya maklum kan, pindah ke lingkungan baru banyak banget pikiran yang terlintas di benak padahal kan nggak sepenuhnya hipotesa itu bener. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this book dan kemungkinan besar aku bakal re-read buku ini (Of course setelah semua TBR terbabat habis)

Nếu mình nhớ không nhầm, trong sách có 252 quotes tất cả. Những câu mình cảm nhận được/hiểu được ý của nó, chắc cũng chỉ được đâu đó 52 câu. Còn nếu thích thì số câu còn ít đi nữa.

Nhưng không vì thế mình đánh giá thấp ‘Blonote’. Mình nghĩ là từng người, từng thời điểm Tablo nói ra câu nói nào đó, nghĩ về nó và quyết định in nó vào cuốn sách đều rất hi vọng nó sẽ giúp ích cho tâm hồn của một ai đó. Và chỉ dựa vào tâm hồn của mình, ở thời điểm cụ thể này, để đánh giá tất thảy điều đó, thì mình cảm thấy điều đó không công bằng.

Có thể ở một thời điểm nào khác mình sẽ hiểu ‘Blonote’ hơn, hoặc không.

Vậy nên nếu như để đánh giá, vậy cứ để trung bình là 3 sao đi.

Sometimes witty, sometimes cheesy, sometimes heart-wrenching, sometimes absurd. All in all, very much the Tablo I've grown to love through Epik High's music. I was looking forward to reading this a lot, and I was not disappointed. If you're looking for a quick read that will move you nevertheless, Blonote is definitely a good pick. I know for sure I'll pick it up again and again and again.
