In 2077, bio-engineers Sara and Vick decided to build an improved human being – a cyborg with a mechanical body and a cloned human brain. They knew that what they were doing was against the law, but they had to try. Their creation far exceeded their expectations, bringing forth a real person with amazing strength and abilities and a gentle personality – but would he be accepted in a world of conflicting politics and religion?

This is the story, set in 2080s America, of a highly unusual young man’s search for adventure, love and acceptance.

Tin Man is a thought-provoking and emotionally compelling story that blends science fiction with timeless human themes. Scott S. Elliott brings us into a future where science and morality collide, and introduces a creation who is not just machine or man, but something beautifully in between. The novel explores politics, religion, and prejudice while never losing sight of its heart: one extraordinary young man’s search for belonging, love, and meaning. With vivid storytelling and a gentle yet powerful protagonist, this book asks what it truly means to be human. A captivating read that lingers with you long after the last page.

This book took me by surprise in the best way. when it was spotlighted at our book club(halfass book club) While it presents itself as a high-concept sci-fi story about a cyborg in the future, what it truly delivers is an intimate portrait of identity. The Tin Man’s innocence, curiosity, and desire to understand the world mirror the struggles we all face in trying to fit into systems that were not designed for us. The ethical questions raised, about creation, responsibility, and autonomy, are handled with nuance rather than sensationalism. The world-building is crisp and believable, and the emotional resonance is strong.

What impressed me most about Tin Man during the spotlight in our Halfass bookclub is how effortlessly it blends fast-paced science fiction with heartfelt character development. The Tin Man’s creation is thrilling and suspenseful, but it’s the quieter moments, his attempts at understanding human relationships, his confusion over prejudice, his desire to belong, that give the story real emotional depth. Elliott handles these moments with sensitivity, avoiding clichés and instead offering a story that feels nuanced and deeply humane.

In our last concluded spotlight at Halfass book club. I really love this book cause there’s a tenderness in this novel that’s rare in science fiction. The Tin Man is a creation of wires, metal, and a cloned brain, yet he feels more human than the people who built him. His emotional growth, the confusion, the small joys, the heartbreak of rejection, felt like watching a child grow up in a world too sharp for his softness.
This story made me feel deeply understood.

In our version in half-ass book club: We loved the subtle humor in the writing. Even in a futuristic dystopia, the story has heart and warmth and yet his book sparked our best discussion yet. What does it mean to belong? To be human? A must-read.
