As I sat down to review "CD-Roms Rated: A Guide to the Best & Worst CD-Roms & Multimedia Titles", I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me. The late 1990s and early 2000s were a time of great innovation and experimentation in the world of technology, and CD-ROMs were at the forefront of it all. This book, published in 1997, was a comprehensive guide to the best and worst of the CD-ROM landscape, and it's a fascinating piece of historical ephemera.

The book is divided into several sections, each focusing on a different aspect of CD-ROMs and multimedia. The first section is a comprehensive directory of CD-ROMs, covering everything from educational titles to games to interactive stories. The entries are brief but informative, providing a snapshot of each title's features, gameplay, and technical specifications.

One of the most interesting aspects of the book is its rating system. The authors have developed a unique system for evaluating CD-ROMs based on their technical quality, educational value, and entertainment value. Each title is given a rating from one to five stars, with explanations for each rating. This system allows readers to quickly identify the best and worst of the bunch, and it's a great way to get a sense of what's worth your time.

Of course, some of the titles listed in this book are now ancient history. Who remembers "The Sims" or "UFO: Enemy Unknown"? These games were once cutting-edge, but they've since been replaced by newer, more sophisticated titles. However, there are still many gems hidden within the pages of this book. I was surprised to discover that some of my favorite childhood games are still well-regarded today, even if they're not as flashy as modern releases.

The book also includes a section on CD-ROM hardware, covering everything from drives to controllers. This section is helpful for anyone who's looking to upgrade their setup or troubleshoot problems with their existing hardware.

One thing that's missing from this book is any real discussion of the potential downsides of CD-ROMs. While the authors do mention some of the technical limitations of CD-ROMs (such as storage space and data transfer rates), they don't really explore the environmental impact of these physical media. In an era where digital distribution is becoming increasingly common, it's interesting to think about how we might have approached sustainability in the past.

Overall, "CD-Roms Rated: A Guide to the Best & Worst CD-Roms & Multimedia Titles" is a fascinating piece of historical ephemera that offers a glimpse into the early days of multimedia technology.
